Wonderful Customer Service I want to share with this audience my gratitude toward O'Connor Hardware the way they dealt with regarding a recent snow blower purchase. Briefly, back in November I purchased a snow blower that for various reasons that would not be suitable for my driveway. The problem was not apparent until the first snow which was after the thirty days return period. I carefully explained the concern I had about the snow blower and after listening to my concerns O'Connor agreed to take back the snow blower and return my money, which they did. When you do actually find one, it's always the same & quickest answer, "This is not my department" then they go back to talking amongst one another. I recently ordered a product from STIHL as a gift for my brother for Christmas. It was suppose to be shipped to O'Connor Hardware and I thought i would have it before Christmas. There was a problem with O'Connor's being able to get it in time for Christmas, but I worked with a gentleman named Jim, in the rental/power tool department, and he followed through diligently to get this gift for me , and he was just so pleasant and terrific. He kept me informed as to when this product would be available for pickup, and I can't thank him enough. I have always been a fan of small businesses, and the personal care Jim provided is hard to find these days. He is a great employee. Much gratitude from this customer. read more

Now that OConnors finally offers a military discount (a few years ago), besides being kind of overpriced on a LOT of things (before current economy - this is not new) it appears that they only allow items that they decide deserve a military discount, so today's military discount was a big fat 0. I realize that this is a privilege and I am not balking this completely but really, why bother. Lowes and Depot are not that far and well, as much as I like to support the little guy, I loathe going to this store. They are doing just fine and pretty close to Hanscom - if you are going to give a military discount give a military discount...or just don't. To me, picking and choosing what to discount is not a good look. read more

I recently called "Kevin" Oconnor. The reason why I asked for him, since he was in charge is because I was on hold twice and had to call back. I was only asking about snow blowers since my snow blower failed and I am looking for a replacement. I finally talked with this Kevin character and asked him if he had any snow blowers on sale. He said "Of course Not" his snow blowers are all top of the line and no Discounts. I told him I was not looking for any special treatment but what did he have from bottom line pricing to top line so I can compare. He hung up on me. LOL. I used to enjoy buying birdseed, suet and other odds and ends here, until I took my snowblower to be repaired as it was leaking. Not only was it not fixed after I paid the $140, but when I called and told them, within their 30 day warrantee, I was told that I could keep it until winter's end and bring it then. Then was today. Women be aware that the service department here is filled with many misogynists who clearly feel that women should not have a voice when it comes to any type of "manly" equipment. Never in my life have I ever been treated the way that I was today at O'Connors. Thankfully, I spoke with the director, Dave Ash, who was very concerned to hear about my encounter with John in Customer Service. I am happy to say that after he got involved, they fixed my snowblower, and in the end, did not charge me in addition to what I originally paid. read more

I have been going here exclusively for the past 41 years. Never a problem either finding what I needed or getting expert, courteous help in solving fixit or DIY issues. Always five star experiences. However, on consecutive visits over the past two days, I have had unhelpful, contentious service interactions with two of the three employees I had to speak with. They both acted as if they were irritated about something. These two were mature, senior gentlemen (Customer Service and electrical departments) and not the younger staff members others here have complained about. Anyone have similar recent experiences or have an idea what might be going on? read more

* Great Selections & Value * O'Connor True Value is my go-to neighborhood hardware store. They have a large selection of products at reasonable prices. People from nearby towns even come here. They carry the same inventory as Home Depot and Lowes (HD&L), but in a smaller scale. They offer a large inventory of hardware, tools, Benjamin Moore paint, electrical supplies, plumbing supplies, gardening supplies, housewares, and construction equipment rentals. They also offer knife and blade sharpening, key-making, and glass cutting services. Party equipment rentals are also available: large charcoal grills, dunking booths, and others. They have an onsite propane fill station for quick tank refills; you have to pay for the refill inside before heading out to the fill station. And, their Webber grill selection is bigger than any other store I have visited. Their prices are a bit higher than at HD&L, but they are a local store that gives back to the community. Plus, the floor staff is helpful and knowledgeable; they've been this way for years. They also have some product models and brands you won't see at HD&L. For example, a few months ago I bought a DeWalt power drill from O'Connor. HD&L both carried the same DeWalt power drill model DWD110K, but O'Connor carried the next model up (i.e., DWD112) at a few bucks more. The difference: the DWD110K has a chuck made of metal and plastic; the DWD112 has an all-metal chuck. These little differences matter when dealing with certain projects. I don't live in Billerica, but work there so found myself in here buying paint several times recently. Moving house, so every weekend for what felt like forever I would visit this store on Fridays to buy my Benjamin Moore paints. Unlike Home Depot, this is more of what I would call an old fashioned hardware store despite being in a strip mall. I find the staff very friendly and they make themselves available to provide actual assistance unlike the previously mentioned big box store. The paint department in particular were very helpful on a number of occasions. Even though I have finished my painting marathon I will definitely return for other household items as needed. A very good shopping experience overall. read more

Great store with knowledgeable staff. I travel to this store and it is out of my way. I have 3 other ACE stores closer. Much better than any of the big box stores. I had a issue with an outdoor spigot and they helped me find what I needed and even put the washer on the part I brought in. I have had several other experiences in the plumbing department. I purchased a snow blower from O'Connor about 2 years ago. The store came highly recommended as a family owner store with competitive prices and good service. The sales man seemed knowledgeable, but the first red flag occurred while he was entering the sale in his computer. He kept going on and on, "educating" me about the winters and snow up here in Massachusetts. When he was done he finally asked me where I was from. My response: "Portland, Maine" The snow blower was supposed to arrive in about a week or two. Two weeks passed by, no blower. 3 weeks, no blower. 4 weeks, no blower. I called and whoever answered said it would arrive in a week. After 6 weeks I went into the store and asked for a refund. And that's when the fun really began. The gentleman, presumably the store manager, began arguing with me. Why would I want the snow blower now? It hasn't snowed yet. I actually had to explain to him that when you sell something, take the persons money, and say you're going to deliver in x number of days, then you have to deliver. He responded by saying that if they did that then the gas would sit in the blower and ruin it because of the ethanol. I told him that is why you add fuel stabilizer - so the gas doesn't go bad and ruin anything. He stood there, looking off into distance and not at me, and seemed to be "processing" what I had just said. At that point he looked at the cashier and said "give her her money back." I'm glad was finally able to get that refund, but the entire experience soured me on the whole "family owned" argument. You can ripped off by any store or sales person - who the owner is really doesn't matter. And yes I purchased a blower elsewhere but was unable to do so until after it snowed and I couldn't get out of the driveway, which is a little late. read more

Excellent customer service in all departments, but a special shout-out to Morgan and the paint team for correcting a paint snafu. Ok. I am probably the least mechanically inclined person in the world. I should really just turn in my man card. However, once in a while, a need arises that requires a trip to O'Connor's to satisfy. They have EVERYTHING. Well, at least everything I can conceive of. I suppose if you really know about tools, hardware, etc. you could probably come up with some obscure item that they don't stock, but even then, I'm sure they would special order it for you. This store is deceivingly big and it can take some time to find what you're looking for. Incidentally, on several occasions I have scoured the store looking for something and it always seems to be in the "Paint Sundries" aisles. Now I just start there. The one complaint I have about this store is that if you are male, do not expect to be asked if you need help as most of the floor staff is male and it must be considered insulting to one's manhood to imply that another man doesn't know his way around a hardware store. I usually go to this place accompanied by my female boss and if we can't find what we need, she says "Tom, go to the next aisle so someone will help me." Once I leave, she'll bat her eyes and twirl her hair and in a matter of seconds, someone materializes out of nowhere to help the damsel in distress. I've seen this happen on many more than one occasion. It's amusing when she's talking to the sales guy and I stroll back over. Oh, the look of judgement I get sometimes! Whatever. Giving them a 3 star because the Manager/ceo of the store received my complaint very professionally. To break it down. I was returning an item and was accused of returning it broken by a girl named Rena. Rena clearly had no idea what the item was that I was returning and it most certainly was not broken. She had the item inspected, and when she was told it was perfectly fine her response was "whatever just insert your card" as she rolled her eyes. While waiting for the return to process she began speaking poorly about other employees and their punctuality in front of a line of customers. Rena is beyond unprofessional and belongs away from the public with her terrible attitude. To sum it up. I have never been treated like this here. Mostly all my experiences here have been great but this one left a sour taste in my mouth. I hope the proper action was taken. I'll update if I find out it wasn't. read more

Actually, I'm a huge fan. They'll cut you a key in no time, and have a great selection of practical household items, especially for kitchen, bath and yard. This, in addition to being an excellent all-around hardware store. If you want to browse at leisure, it's a pleasant store (seriously, people do this) but if you want to be in and out in seconds flat, the excellent staff can make that happen. First, the only downside- they don't carry lumber apart from 2x4's. As a home improvement contractor I find I frequently have a laundry list of items for jobs that include lumber and don't hit O'Connors because I don't want to make two stops. There is nothing, NOTHING, like a small, personal hardware store. It doesn't matter if I am spending $200 on paint or $2.00 on some oddball size bolt. EVERYONE is happy to help me. Nobody just points and says, "Check over there." I can always find a worker to help. True, they do not have lumber. I'd go to a lumber yard for lumber. But I go here for everything else...keys, paint, bolts, dog toys, work gloves, screen repairs, knife sharpening, duck tape, grill brushes, snow stakes - everything. Every cashier is super friendly, and pays attention to what you are saying. There is no need to endure the hell of self-checkout. If I buy lime or sand by the bag, I just pull the car up and they load it into my trunk for me. If I am filling my propane tank, the guy carries the full tank back to the car for me. And I am not a little old lady, I can certainly carry stuff myself, I just don't always want to. Highly encourage people to give O'Connor Hardware your business. The staff is mixed, half of them won't stop asking you for help, the rest will watch you walk by them five times while I mutter "it should be around here somewhere" and the two employees will continue on with their conversation about their weekend plans and not offer any assistance. Very sad. Home Depot and Lowes are no better but at least the prices are better and you can check inventory and aisle location with the HD or Lowes app. Saves you a trip to a certain HD store if they don't have any and head to a store that does. The power service department is completely useless. They refused to warranty a Stihl product because it wasn't bought from them. They are an authorized dealer, simple as that. I went right up the chain at Stihl and spoke with a district manager who couldn't have been more apologetic and offered to call them for me. O'Connor's repair service department is the best! They have repaired all my gasoline powered small engine tools such as my chain saw, pole chainsaw, leaf blower, John Deere tractor and snow blower, all purchased from other stores. Since their service is so dependable, I am now buying these kinds of tools from them such as a walk behind lawnmower for trimming. O'Connor's selection of all kinds of quality hardware is great. Their high quality exterior dryer vent is metal not plastic. They have water pumps designed to pump your basement dry to less than 1/4 inch. Their boxed hardware (nuts and bolts) 100x quantity is a bargain. I love shopping their tool bargains. And their great advice to me in plumbing, paint mixing, chainsaws, electrical, lighting, hardware, and tools have helped me solve my problems and emergencies. I have their rewards card and after big purchases they send me a coupon for $5 or $10 and on my birthday too. We shop here every month. read more

If you are one of those people that appreciates: --a dying breed of hardware store, --A place where where people are friendly and knowledgeable (ok, maybe not the young kids at the register, but why would you go to one of them for home improvement/ project/ trade advice, anyway?) --the weird item that you're looking for still exists, and you still want a broad selection of types of goods - as opposed to going to a specialty store - --then O'Connors is absolutely the place for you. Yes, I find that some of the items are a little pricey but I am personally willing to pay more to not have to go to the Cheapo or Blowes. Additionally, I find that not every item is more expensive. They also have some great deals on tools and seasonal items where they crush the big boxes prices. read more

I often visit this hardware store. It is only a few miles from my house. The help and personal attention you get is amazing. You would Never get anything like that in the big box stores. ( Home Depot ). It seems like they higher high school kids which is great. Letting them get real life work experience, and make a few dollars while doing it. On the other hand they are a little expensive. It's the story of pay a little more to support a local, well run, supports the community store. Or go to a big box store and get a cheaper price and feed the greed? If they came down on the prices just a little bit I would gladly give them 5 stars. Everything else is excellent! read more

Bought a pressure washer and the hose developed a hole on the second use. Brought the hose in as instructed rudely on the phone and got accused of bringing one that didn't come with the pressure washer. The hose with my pressure washer is orange and they said it only comes in black. They're helpful when spending $755 in 5 minutes, but accuse their customers of trying to defraud them if you go back with an issue. Buy your bigger ticket items elsewhere. read more

Customer service is always above-average, and their selection would surprise most (they have a lot more than Aubuchon in Tewksbury). If you need regular old hardware store things like rakes, files, hole saws and such, you will be fine. They are perfectly acceptable within that respect. Other than price. Being they are also a dealer of lawn equipment, snow removal, chainsaws, weed wackers, etc, you would expect some knowledge of what they are selling. I just left there after needing something for my piece of equipment and wanted a cross referenced part number to purchase something from their store. "All I was told is it won't work. Been through this a number of times. It just don't work". Really? I couldn't get hold of my friend who used said cross reference for years with no trouble, so I needed them to do the leg work for me. Couldn't be bothered. They only replace 1 for 1what come off of equipment. Give me a break. Let me reiterate. For the every day hardware thing, go for it. They'll do ok. When entering O'Connors, you are greeted and helped by several people. A suprising and welcome change from the box stores. However, when I recently tried to return/exchange a piece of equipment, a much different attitude was displayed. "It is used and we won't take it back or exchange it". We spent approx $2,500 in snow blowers/lawn mower/chain saw equipment in the past 7 months and they certainly did not care if I spent any more money with them or went to the box stores. We have been exceptionally disappointed by the service and lack of professionalism at O'Connor Hardware during the past year. From the tone of the voices of the people hired to answer the telephone, to the individuals picking up the phones to hopefully give advice, they all rate a FLAT ZERO. It is unfortunate b/c we always patronized O'C even though their prices were higher than Home Depot and Lowes, due to the professional staff. Those days are gone and we have to believe it is due to their need for competition. When Home Depot was anticipating locating down the street from O'Connors it was a different story with O'C...they were very professional and put on a good face. Now the fear is gone, so they think, and they are now unprofessional. Up until a few years ago it was mostly retired gentlemen working at the store. Now it is careless younger men who possess the same careless attitude. The "Manager" of the store`Kevin O'Connor speaks like a "kid" and also does not possess the respectfulness toward customers the older gentlemen did as a matter of course. Last week my gas grill would not work. I bought the gas grill at O'Connors hardware store. I thought it could possibly be the gas tank so I loaded it into the car and the general manager Kevin B showed me by taking a brand new grill outside putting the tank on and lighting the grill. I proceeded to go home and have my neighbor mount the tank into my Weber Grill. It's still did not work. I called Oconnor's and Kevin B went one above and came to my home diagnose the problem and got me up and running. This is one of the best customer service resolutions I've have ever experienced.
