We bought a baby Syrian hamster from Pets Plus and couldn't be happier. When we came in before the hamster was ready to go home, one of the friendly staff walked us through best cages, bedding, food, etc. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly and the supplies are priced well. I like this place and I like to support local businesses. The people are nice etc... so why 2 stars? I've bought no less than 40 fish and untold food, chemicals, etc... here. For the first time in 3 years we tried to get the fish guarantee because a couple few new fish died in an established aquarium. They tested the water and it was fine but they wouldn't honor the guarantee because they couldn't identify the fish. Guess what? Fish are cannibals and eat each other when they die. I know what kind of fish it is. Especially if you have the receipt that's 48 hours old to refer to. So, we find a new place to buy from now on. Too bad. read more

The food we buy for our dog isn't sold at Petco or the other large chain stores. But Pets Plus does carry it and I called them to ask if they have the Large Breed formula of this brand (Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul) and they said they did not, but I could order it and it would take about a week to come in. I went in a few days later and put in an order for the Large Breed formula. The store is tiny and a bit cramped. The woman working at the time was very nice and helpful, and gave my dog treats. I appreciate that they are willing to order the food for me, especially in comparison to Doc's Petland in North Reading who said they would not do this (though they also carry this dog food brand). UPDATE: I've now been getting my dog's food from this store for several months, and they now have the brand and type of food we need on regular order, so they always have 2 bags for me about every 6 weeks. I didn't expect this level of service and friendliness - they are great! read more

This was my "go to" store years ago as they were establishing themselves in Tewksbury. My dog passed about 7 years ago, and with my new puppy, this was my first choice --of course! I am all for supporting small business. I have been going for about 9 months now to purchase dog food and treats. While there were a couple of warning signs with the owner and his demeanor, I chose to ignore it. After my most recent experience, I am done with this place. The owner is arrogant and just flat our rude to customers. I will drive elsewhere to shop for quality dog food even though I literally live half a mile away. Customer service is "Retail 101". Pets Plus is a tiny pet store tucked into a tiny strip mall, with way more to offer than the big chains. I went here recently to begin stocking my new 50 gallon aquarium, armed with very little knowledge on aquaria and fish. Lucky for me, the staff here were attentive and incredibly knowledgeable. The man who helped me was unbelievable. I was only browsing for a few minutes when he walked up and began helping me. Even though the store was obviously busy, I had 100% of his attention for quite a long time. I really wish I had gotten his name so that I could compliment him personally. I left the store with everything that I needed, and nothing that I didn't. The staff understood when I told him that I was on a budget, and did everything to help me stick to it. Also, as a newbie at fish keeping, I was thrilled that he understood my lingo (that little guy, the mohawk one, wiggly fish, etc.) and never once seemed condescending or belittling, like some other places have been. I really appreciated that, and I learned a lot from him. I highly recommend this store if you want prompt, personal service, or if you have questions that you need answered by someone who actually knows what they're talking about. The store is a bit cramped and the hours and location are a bit inconvenient, but it's well worth it for the service that you will receive. read more

My female kitty had crystals in her urine. So I stopped in because I had tried everything else. Including what my vet recommended. I spoke with Matt and he recommended Weruva cat food (local, Natick). He also recommended I try cranberry powder supplement, as well as a fountain for increased water consumption. We recently moved from Connecticut. This store are the only ones in the immediate area that carry my "speciality" dog food. Turns out our pup has such a sensitive stomach that once we finally found something she could keep down, we are never switching. This store told us about a rebate program with the dog food, which our old store never told us about. The associates there are always more than happy to help me carry the heavy bags out to my car. They also just recommended a great cat litter and is lavender scented! Showed me how it worked up at the register and saved me from buying a crazy expensive brand that I was going to try just as a lasts resort because I can ALWAYS smell the litter. Love this place! Not only is it conveniently located close to my house, the people here are great. The staff is full of animal lovers, each one helpful and knowledgeable. Sometimes when they hire younger, new staff members they may not be equipped to answer your questions. But ask for a manager or someone more experienced and you won't be disappointed with how helpful they are. They're prices are fair, and they carry the best you can get for whatever pet you're shopping for. Don't go anywhere else for your pet needs. Staff is fantastic, very knowledgeable and friendly. I've had specific issues and problems with my pets and they have always had great suggestions and information to share with me. Store is super clean and well organized. Food selection is great. I've been feeding my pets Fromm's for 17 years and when we started they were the only place for miles that carried it. When I've needed specific foods they have been happy to order it special for us. My dog is welcome to visit the store. My kids have been welcome to visit the small animals, talk with the store bird, check out the koi fish and the fish in the aquatic room. I've asked my dad to pop in and grab food when we needed it and staff was super helpful and willing to make sure he left with what he needed. Once, when I had an issue with a product, the owner contacted the manufacturer for me and waited impatiently while on hold in order to rectify the situation for me. Then, later on when the manufacturer did not follow through on sending me another item for free, the manager, Nick, kicked in for me. I wish I could give negative stars. I purchased three blacklight fish for my 6 year old daughter today, one of the fish died less than three hours of being in her perfectly balanced tank. I called to ask if there was something they could do about the dead fish. The owner was extremely rude and blamed me for the dead fish! He screamed that he doesn't guarantee his products. Nice, really nice. Seriously, why would I bother calling if I had done something to the fish?! I'm more upset about the fact that I paid double the price that specific fish costs almost everywhere else. I've been looking for a pet store around my area because we also have a 55 gallon tank to fill. I have done my research. I will be going to jays aquatics in Salem nh. If I could give this place negative stars I would. We had started a fish tank with supplies from here, spent about $150. We established the tank, asked a staff member what would be good beginner fish, he recommended some for us, we got four, then came back a few weeks later for six more as recommended. We were very loyal to this place, and only purchased fish from them. A couple of weeks ago one of our Rosy barbs, one of the first fish recommended to us, began chasing all of the other fish in the tank except for the tetras and nipping at them. The other barb in particular began hiding because he was being nipped at 24/7, and the troublesome barb also was chasing and biting both swordtails. I went to the store and told them of our dilemma, one of the staff members told us to bring the barb in and swap it with a different barb. Less than 24 hours later, we spent 20 minutes catching this fish and a 45 minute drive roundtrip only to be told be different staff members that they would not take the fish back and the solution was to get several more rosy barbs! Our tank is simply not big enough, and this barb they would not take back is now living miserably in a fish bowl because she cannot go in with the other fish. Also, the staff member the next day was one that had helped us several times before, yet he acted like he didn't even know us and we weren't faithful customers, and we were somehow doing something wrong by bringing the fish there when this is what we were told to do. If it is their policy to not take back a nippy fish, so be it. But this is a fish they recommended as a beginner fish, and I am sure this fish was nipping fish in their store in their own tank long before we brought her home. Also, the staff members should all be aware of this policy, we wasted a lot of time and effort in all of this. We had planned on being faithful to this store but will not be going back. read more

I should have reviewed this place a couple of years ago that's how long I've been going every 3-4 weeks to purchase my dog's hard to find food (Acana Pacifica). I've spoken at length with three of the guys that work there multiple times and they're always very patient and happy to educate their customers and share any info they have about nutrition, treats and really any product they sell they are all extremely well versed in. I have found a place that's a few dollars cheaper but they guarantee any product you want to try from the smaller bags of food. If your dog doesn't like it you can bring it back and exchange for your regular food. I've been to many pet stores over the last 3 years from animal feed stores to high end boutiques and these guys are the most knowledgable by far. Also everyone there is super sweet and even though I'm a regular and often bring my young daughter with me to pick up food she likes to look at the fish, small furry animals and of course say hello to Motley the gorgeous resident blue and gold macaw. Each time I come in at least one person sometimes two or three ask if I need help with anything and don't mind when I explain I'm just grabbing food and letting my young daughter check out the animals and if they're not busy they even take the time to say hello to my daughter and chat with us about birds or guinea pigs whatever she's most interested in that day. Someone is always cleaning and that means a lot to me as an animal lover that's slightly OCD. All of their animals appear happy and healthy. If you don't see what you're looking for whether it's a certain brand or type of fish just ask I've witnessed the workers research and special order various things for their customers. Great selection of food and personable, smart staff. I'll be a customer for life. read more

Really good store for aquarists, I specifically was surprised at the quality of fish. Probably the only Discus retailer in the Lowell area that stocks them regularly and they look good so that tells you about the overall quality here. The fish are priced really good but I thought the price of food here was a little high, they sells higher end brands like Sera as opposed to Tetra which is sort of a bummer to me because I don't see much of a quality difference between brands. They also have a good selection of African Cichlids which is hard to come by because most stores focus more on their South American counterparts. read more

Just about a year ago my aunt told me about this place. I've been in the aquarium hobby for a few years now and I highly suggest this place if you are in the aquarium hobby. The prices on the fish are a bit high but the fish from here are worth every penny. They are much healthier than any other fish from Petco or Petsmart. We come here often because they have the brand that we love to feed our puppy, which is "Fromm". The only inconvenience is the place is too far from our home and we aren't really customer serviced when we walk into the store. For the first time today, we brought our puppy to the store. We walked in and the normal, we usually aren't greeted by the bald man at the front desk. We were the ones who had said "hello" first. I've worked in customer service for 3 years. And I know, the store associates or agents are suppose to welcome the customer and not eye them with a expression like we're going to steal. Then, as soon as we checked out at the register. Mind you our "Dog" instinctively pees on the rug. He's a puppy, so accidents happen. As soon as that happened the man at the register rudely said "He can't pee hereeee!". Obviously he can't pee there and he's a dog who can't help but pee on things out of instinct?? Why have a pet store if you can't welcome dogs. The least he can do was say "It's alright, accidents happen. Don't worry about it." Or he could have offered some paper towels for us to clean it up. The store just lost us as a customer. This place would have gotten 5+ stars from me a couple of years back. I'm between 2 and 3 stars now, after Mike, their fish guru left for bigger things. Now it is more of a commodity store and the quality level of fish, cleanliness of tanks, customer service has gone down. There is one shining star here, his name is John. He is moderately knowledgeable, extremely helpful. I've just had too many bad experiences with two separate people who have been employed there for a long time. They are either busy playing with the store parrot, sound impatient to answer questions on the phone (I live an hour away and would still come back). None of the quality, rare fish they used to get seem to make appearances anymore and I unfortunately won't be back. It was my staple store while Mike was there, very sad. That being said, the owner, Matt, is a very nice guy, I just don't think enough of his personality is displayed in the store.
