Like my mother before me, I LOVE hardware stores . There's always something I need for my place…read moreand I prefer a smaller store than the big box variety. Yesterday I needed keys made & phoned first, making sure they could do it. I'd recently been in _____ the " Orange" big box store and after waiting what seemed to be forever for a hardware associate, I left exasperated. The gentleman who answered the phone couldn't have been nicer when I asked my question.... So off I went. The store is located right next to the RMV in an old, sort of run down shopping center.... Remnants of the long gone Building 19 shuttered on one end... A very busy Market Basket on the other. I found parking easily and entered the store. I was greeted within maybe 5 seconds & asked if I wanted help finding anything.... KEYS made. I was helped right away without any negativity whatsoever.... This is a new & wonderful experience that I like! Lol After making the keys the associate asked me if there was anything else I needed... Yes there was. And so he brought me ( without any negative attitude) over to what they had .. unfortunately I need '1' caster of a certain size to replace on the bottom of an antique chair - long story .. I moved recently which resulted in mega damages. Anyway, we talked some and he gave me options to explore..... how awesome! I went to pay. While doing so - because it's certain that I will return, I subscribed to their rewards program... My 1st purchase already netted me a $5.00 reward - how cool is that! This was a great experience.... It's not far from where I live. A great place to shop.

My father (who passed at age 94) would drive down to this store several times per week to "check…read morewhether Shoe City has..." whatever item he "needed that day:" whether large or small, he knew after centuries of shopping there that they carry unique goods not found in most hardware stores. Even though their prices are generally HIGHER than elsewhere, he knew what he needed, wanted, and was a LOYAL & LONGTIME customer. After he passed, I would walk to Shoe City whenever I needed something, or walk in and browse as I passed those opened doors. I soon found for myself that their Customer Service is "spotty" & the stock they carry has diminished over the years. ON MY LAST VISIT, I stopped in to ask whether it was possible to special order components for an obscure/vintage "Weiser" doorknob. The older gentleman, who I believe is the owner, came up to me, rudely & very dismissively insisting that in 30+ years in the business he had "NEVER heard of the brand!" BOTTOM LINE: Perhaps Shoe City Hardware was once a great local hardware store with staff that helped customers find hard-to-find pieces nowhere else available. But now their GENERAL MERCHANDISE items are pricey & limited to 1 or 2 brands. And sadly, those unique/ classic "gems" that once kept loyal customers coming back have become leftovers from "old inventory" & no longer replenished. They have not had the simple, common items/solutions I'd been shopping for during my past 5 visits. I fear they are biding time until they go out of business. I wish them well. - a Disenchanted "Father's Little Girl"
