After he passed, I would walk to Shoe City whenever I needed something, or walk in and browse as I passed those opened doors. I soon found for myself that their Customer Service is "spotty" & the stock they carry has diminished over the years. ON MY LAST VISIT, I stopped in to ask whether it was possible to special order components for an obscure/vintage "Weiser" doorknob. The older gentleman, who I believe is the owner, came up to me, rudely & very dismissively insisting that in 30+ years in the business he had "NEVER heard of the brand!" BOTTOM LINE: Perhaps Shoe City Hardware was once a great local hardware store with staff that helped customers find hard-to-find pieces nowhere else available. But now their GENERAL MERCHANDISE items are pricey & limited to 1 or 2 brands. And sadly, those unique/ classic "gems" that once kept loyal customers coming back have become leftovers from "old inventory" & no longer replenished. I have to question AG's decision to affiliate with ACE Hardware. I bought an item from ACE Hardware directly via their website and had it shipped to their store. I also purchased a few items directly from A.G. Again pleasant experience, real hard working knowledgeable folks in here. It really is a call back to the hardware stores of yesteryear at A.G. Well the item I purchased from Ace's website did not meet my needs and I tried to initiate a return with A.G. But they sent me packing and to deal directly with ACE. I understand it's ACE policy and I technically did not pay for them for that item. I just feels like if the local stores are going to accept shipments from ACE they should be able to initiate an Return Merchant Authorization as well. I called ACE numerous times and even Tweeted at them, but I was blown off. So now I'm out $40 dollars for a tool I don't use and could be sold as new again. They did not honor their 30 day return policy. Yes, I understand we are in "uncertain" times, but it just felt off putting. I had to buy a mini-fridge from Home Depot recently the unit I got was defective out of the box. Home Depot took the fridge back and refunded my money post-haste. Markets and customers change and I guess I will take my business elsewhere, but it feels like ACE has some really outdated policies and procedures in handling customer disputes.

Went to O'Connor today and was immediately assisted by a pleasant young man with a clipboard. He found the grill in store (same price as the other stores) and rang up the order saying O'Connor would deliver it in a few days, no charge. Amazing! But O'Connor's did. I have an affinity for small hardware stores. But could one call O'Connor "small" at all? I was blown away by the façade when I first laid eyes on it, a massive store with an outdoor section and equally as big parking lot. My only gripe is with whoever created the in/out sections of the parking lot, why are there no straight lines to the areas you have to get to and all of these random curbs? Once inside you're basically inside a Home Depot without the tall ceilings. This is definitely the largest hardware store north of Boston that doesn't start with a H or L. As my eyes began to wander in amazement, I looked through some of the aisles of items I was not in there looking to find. Kitschy signs, funny decals, all of those items you'll ONLY find at one of these throwback types of stores are what bring me back to going to stores exactly like this with my grandfather back in the 80's. I finally made it to the back of the store, with the help of one of the very kind teenagers who guided me in the right direction, in fact he took me to exactly where I needed to be. Quick checkout with very good help at the front, they weren't "understaffed" in any way even as businesses struggle. I don't have the historical nature to compare this to the "good ol days" of O'Connor's from 10-20 years ago like another reviewer did. If that's the case, do you just want everything to be a Lowe's? I sure as hell don't. Things are out of stock because the world has been thrown a curveball the last two years. I would never blame a mega corporation or a small town hardware store for items being out of stock. I'll return here as often as I can, great experience all around.
