Ok. I was hanging a complete nervous breakdown after returning from a trip to Europe, having my computer crash and the apple store telling me it was a lost cause...all while working on a huge technology project with deadlines. I hadn't backed up for a few months and most of my critical documents were gone.. so I thought. I called Alan after seeing positive yelp reviews and he came the same day. You may think "lifesaver" is way too strong a word for a computer guy - right? WRONG! I had taken my computer to Apple for a recall on the keyboard. I went to pick it up today and they said, "Oh by the way, we replaced some things and had to erase all your data." After I picked myself up off the floor, I realized that Alan at MacDoctors had me purchase a back up drive some months ago, in case my computer ever crashed. I got home (on a Sunday) and emailed him my problem to see if he could take everything from the back up drive and come by to put it on my new computer. I swear within five minutes, my phone rang and it was him. After listening to my rantings and worries that I would never see my date again, he calmly told me what to do. Not only did he not even have to make a house call, he successfully told me (a total novice) the process in which to get all my data back. So in one day I lost everything and got it all back. I read the reviews here on Yelp and called Alan last Tuesday and about 8:15am. He called me back at 9am and was at my home at 10am. I have a 27" mid-2010 iMac. It would hang on startup for about 10 minutes, freeze whenever I tried to open an app or even work within the app, and take forever to shut down. I started thinking about buying a new iMac, but after speaking with Alan on the phone, he thought the problem most likely was just an old, tired, hard drive. He came over, tested it, and sure enough that was the problem. My computer is now running like new and I have Alan to thank for it. I was updating my operating system and in the process my screen went black with a prohibitory symbol in the middle! I thought my 2017 MacBook Pro was a goner. Frantically searching for an open place to fix it, during this COVID-19 stay at home time, I could not find anywhere! Panic time! I came across MacDoctors and gave them a call. Allan offers the only reasonably priced Mac repair in Los Angeles. When my computer screen cracked, I think Apple quoted me upwards of $800 -- Allan did it, parts and labor, for $150. It works fine. Also, he's helped me out with little things: my power adapter broke -- for 15 bucks he fixed it, and on a holiday no less. The Apple store suggested I buy a brand new one for $80. Unless you're very very wealthy, if something happens to your Mac, I strongly urge you to use MacFix. read more

Unfortunately I am not impressed with this service. I called Alan regarding an issue with my iMac and while he arrived promptly, he provided me with a completely incorrect analysis of the problem with my iMac. Resulting in him advising me it was irreparable and to look at buying a new one! (My computer was slightly damaged in a move - so he made an incorrect assumption). He was in my home for no more than 20 minutes and charged $90 for the service. I was extremely disappointed to learn the "bad news" until I got a second opinion from Mac Enthusiasts who fixed the problem (it was a slightly loose RAM) and my $2,000 iMac is now running as smoothly as before! read more

Alana was so utterly nice and friendly that I feel terrible writing this review. But I am so frustrated with the performance of my Mac after his 'repair' that I have to write it. I chose him because of the strong Yelp reviews, so I am sure he is very good at certain aspects of Mac repair. Installing hardware seems to be his forte. But diagnosing and fixing software issues may not be in his wheelhouse. Pros: He comes to your location and is very friendly. Cons: He spent a good deal of his time searching Macuser feedback pages to determine the problem, and didn't seem to have the kind of knowledge base you'd expect from a Mac IT guy. Basically, he'd read an online post from the Mac User forum, repeat the article out loud, and then search for a new article. He cleared some 'maybe' Malware from the caches, so that's good. After two hours, he declared the problem fixed, but as soon as I shut my computer down and tried to restart it, the same problem was there. In fact, it was worse. It used to be that my computer would put itself to sleep without warning from time to time, especially at startup. It took about five tries for it to now crash at start up. Now it takes nearly fourty tries to start up. I know this is a Mac issue at its core, so I was hoping for insights whether to go back to Maverick or keep Yosemite. I was hoping for something ehlpful. Again, as far as hardware goes, it sounds like he's very good. But if you have a problem with the software operations, you should seek help from a different source. Alan = Mac Genius. Mac Desktop or Mac Laptop, all MACs! His response time is fast, his sense of urgency is huge, and his prices are very reasonable. I have called on Alan - the "Mac Doctor" twice in the past 2 years. The first time he came to my house within 24 hours (I called on a Sunday, showed up on Monday) as our family Mac desktop was moving so slow after 4-5 years of owning it and 10,000 photos downloaded (many duplicates), we couldn't stand the delays any longer. He used his magic in 90 minutes re-configuring the data and moving the photos to a place they should have been in, then not only shaved off a few $$, but installed more memory from a drive he had in his car. The 2nd time was today, a Saturday, for my work MacBook Air Laptop, where I clicked on a legit looking flash drive update for Google Chrome, after which I immediately knew I fucked up and I was in pop-up hell and frozen screens telling me I needed to call an 855 number to get the virus fixed (helllooo-noooo). I have a high pressure job and work weekends, so I called the Mac Doctor again, and he did not disappoint. He responded within 2 hours, and with mutual trust I allowed him remote access to my laptop where he spent 45 minutes deleting all the evil virus/malware bits hidden in the bowels of my system. I trusted him to remotely dial in, and he trusted me to send a check after. Alan is a reliable, responsive, and a trustworthy Mac genius. When power was restored, I discovered that my 5-year-old Mac desktop wouldn't power up. It's not just the display - the entire machine is unresponsive. It was surge protected. A friend told me how I could upgrade my mid 2009 Macbook Pro instead of purchasing a new one by adding more ram, switching the hard drive to an SSD type and getting a new battery. I called MacDoctors late Sunday afternoon. To my surprise Alan responded quickly and we set up an appointment for Monday at 10:15AM. (he had a client that re-arranged their schedule) Alan arrived 15 minutes early and set to work on my 5 year old17" Macbook Pro. Yep. It's true. There's someone out there who will give you a quote lower than most, order the battery, then come to your house and put it in. Even better: I decided to replace the RAM on my other machine while he was here, in case I ran into trouble. I didn't, but it turned out I didn't have one of the right tools so he let me use his. However, I won't ever find out because when I called and got what I assumed to be a standard albeit boring greeting of "Hi, MacDoctors" I replied like a polite, normal person by saying, "Hi, how are you?" because I'm a HUMAN BEING and the guy pauses for a moment and goes "... ok." At which point I swore at him and told him off. I can't be bothered to go to a store that doesn't even have normal human decency on the phone to notice when someone is trying to be polite. I would heartily recommend using Alan to repair your computer I found him extremely courteous, prompt and who charged fair rates. When the time came for me to buy a new computer I consulted Allan as to the best model of a replacement Mac. In 2012 I paid about 2500 for a 27 inch desk model Mac and another 100 for Apple Care. Following Allan"s advice I bought a rebuilt Mac for 600, which included three year Apple Care and a beautiful 27 inch curved monitor for an additional 175. My total cost was about one third of what I paid in 2012.
