We had time before our flight so we decided to do the touristy thing and go to Pike place. We walked around and wanted something warm to drink. The lady behind the counter was very helpful, I asked her about a couple of the drinks and got her opinion between 2 I was considering. I ended up getting the atole latte and it was delicious. I love tacos, and this spot didn't disappoint. First off, as the name suggests, it's all about the corn tortillas. They're homemade with heirloom corn varieties, which means they're fresh and have a great depth of flavor. (There are bottles of different varietals of dried corn scattered around the restaurant with labels on them so you can learn about the different kinds.) I got three tacos: two tinga de pollo and one veggie. The filling was flavorful. It came with spicy green salsa on the side, which I enjoyed for some extra heat and flavor. This spot is at Pike Place Market (right next door to the "original" Starbucks), so it was busy when we went, but service was friendly and our food came out quickly. The shop itself is tiny, and there is only one spot to eat (a bar by the window with four stools) so be prepared to wait to sit, or take your food to go and find a spot by the water, or eat while walking. I spent just over $23 for three tacos, including tax + tip. Is it more than I'm used to paying in my small city? Yes. It it worth it to support a local, family-run, Latino-owned small business that is on a mission to preserve heirloom, non-GMO corn variety and uses fresh ingredients? To me -- yes! Fairly new addition to Pike Place. Cool that the tortillas used in the menu items here are handmade (apparently if you visit at the right time you can see the tortillas actually being made). Tried the carnitas and bistec (steak) tacos. Loved how chunky the carnitas pieces were (no skimping on the meat!). The bistec was a bit dry. My most favorite part was the pickled onion. It was scrumptious. Super flavorful and crispy! As much as I wanted to really appreciate the tortillas used for the tacos, the edge of some of the tortillas were completely dried out making those parts have an unpleasant tough chew to them. This is a little spot in Pike Place Market. I heard about the homemade tortillas and had to try. I got chicken tinga, carnitas, and al pastor tacos and MAN were they all flavorful! My favorite was the carnitas, but I devoured every single bite. They came with a salsa that was dark red and smoky, which sometimes I don't like, but this was balanced enough to not be overpowering. I've heard of Maiz as an interesting place to go and try sound delicious and freshly made ingredients, especially tortillas! We went on a Saturday around 2pm and there wasn't a particularly long wait - around 5-10 from waiting in line to getting our food. The atmosphere of the restaurant is small and cozy, there are a good amount of windows lining the shop that allows for people passing by to see how freshly made corn tortillas are made - tortillas made here are made the old way, keeping more of nutrients from the corn. This method does make the restaurant run more on the warmer side if you decide to dine in, just a heads up if you stopping by on a warmer day. I got the Tacos and the Horchata Latte, both were delicious and refreshing options. You can definitely taste the freshness of the tortillas, they just have a certain oomph compared to other tortillas that I've had before - You can taste the corn and there is a slightly more pleasing grainy texture. The fillings in the tacos were a variety of options on the menu, I think one was barbacoa-like beef (bottom), middle was chicken, and the top was a stewed vegetable taco - the fillings were more on the saucy side and though there was spicy chili sauce provided on the side, I thought they were already delicious as the way they were. The Horchata Latte was delicious and very refreshing! There was a nice earthy taste that was from the cinnamon - the drink was nice and creamy and I think there were some very small chunks of almonds in the horchata, which was tasty! Though I did wish they I got a bit more horchata as I finished the cup you see here pretty fast. Overall, spent about $20 for everything you see here - which I thought was an alright price given the quantity and quality that you see here. I am definitely a fan of their tortillas as they were absolutely delicious - I would definitely like to revisit to try the other options that Maiz has to offer! read more

Hidden gem in a busy market with a million food options. Was in town for just the day and stumbled upon this place online and by the time I tasted it, wished I hadn't just eaten 1.5 pounds of chowder, because man it was amazing. I just came by for a bite and a coffee since we had just eaten at pike place chowder an hour or two before. I got the ceviche tostada, which was loaded with a generous portion of fresh ceviche that was one of the best bites I've had in a while. It wasn't too pickley/limey, it tasted fresh and was packed with flavor. The horchata latte was great as well if you like milky coffee. Wish I was around for more than a day because I'd definitely come back and explore more of the menu. Include this place in your Seattle / pike place food tour! Amazing new location at pike market. They are very very friendly there. I ordered 3 tacos and 3 quesadillas. They gave me to try their home made tortilla that they make from corn that they bring from Mexico. The guy was very friendly there he warmed complementary tortilla with salt and It was so delicious. quesadillas comes in small size like tacos the only difference was that they put cheese on it, otherwise its same like tacos. Unfortunately they were out of chicken so I took both tacos & quesadilla with the beef. It was very delicious and juicy. I will be back for more. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Maíz. It's a small restaurant located right next to the original Starbucks. We arrived right after they opened and they were busy! Indoor seating is very limited so you might have to find seating elsewhere if there's already a crowd. Luckily, by the time we got our food, there was a space available so we were able to enjoy our brunch with a great ambience. Also, se habla español! We ordered horchata to drink with our chilaquiles & sopes. Maíz is the first restaurant I have encountered that serves authentic tasting horchata. I highly encourage any visitors to get one before you leave the market! For the chilaquiles, I requested the toppings on the side & the sauce was delicious - I only wish I had requested more sauce to thoroughly cover the chips! For the sopes, they had 3 different flavors that vary. We added cheese to them and ate them right away. I will absolutely be returning to Maíz during my next visit to Pike Place Market. read more

I wandered into Maiz the other day and tried their Pinole Latte, which was so, so excellent. I'm super into the world of Central and South American coffee and food right now, and this has been a top favorite. I had mine with almond milk. As my friend has Celiac disease, we made extra sure that the food and the preparation were safe for her and, hooray, they are! We each ordered the taco platter, three tacos with our choice of filling. We each had the pollo de Mexicano, bistec, and picadillo, with bistec winning the top taco rank. I read about Maiz in an article a few weeks back and I really wanted to try it. But, as a local, I really struggle with fending the crowds at Pike Place. Maiz is totally worth the trek through the crowds lining up for Starbucks they could get a block away. The tamales are excellent. I LOVE all the different displays of corn kernels in jars - such a cool way to appreciate the varieties that we don't often see. The coffee is also delicious (try to horchata latte), and you definitely need to try the hot chocolate which is imported from Mexico. read more

I spent $30 on these 2 "plates" - assuming it would be a sufficient meal. The portions were TINY. We're not huge eaters, but were still left hungry. 3 small tacos with no sides - flavor if the meat was pretty good but I expected the tortillas to be better given it's their signature. 2 tamales - again pretty small and these came with a side of beans (literally like 2 tablespoons of beans?) Being a vegetarian it can get tricky to get vegetarian mexican food especially when the beans have animal fat or chorrizo...the staff understands what vegetarian means and adheres to serving just that! I was extremely delighted with their recommendations and the food was just delicious. We had 3 red corn veggie tacos and 1 Chilaqules which were both very flavorful, delicious and perfect for a light lunch. Its a buzy place with mostly takeouts and has tons of other options to order from too. Not to forget their lattes sell like hot cakes everyone were ordering them and maybe we will come back again to try them too!! Pricing wise the quantity could be a little more. Have you seen the 1st Starbucks at the Pike? Well, this place is right next to it and I was told it is quite new and authentic. It's true! It's delicious and authentic. Their tortillas and tostadas are made out real corn/maíz (even blue maíz) Ans it really makes a difference flavor wise. Their menu includes: quesadillas, sopes, huaraches, tamales and champurrado (which is a type of atole: sweet hot beverage made out of corn), gorditas... AND they have veggie options besides chicken, beef, pork, etc. To be honest I was expecting get chilaquiles with a side of frijoles (beans,) but I was told that MAÍZ is more like a "food to go " so they can't offer sides. Too bad. Anyways, chilaquiles were so yummy and not too spicy. You can dine in but they have very few spots (just keep this in mind) Opens at 10am, the line forms quickly, but it worths the wait. My mother in law and husband came in to order some food while I went to the bakery a few doors down. If you know that bakery, you know the line is loooong. By the time I came back to them here, they were still waiting for their food. Despite this, they really enjoyed it. They said it was fresh and tasty. 4.5 stars I've been to maiz an embarrassing number of times. The food is incredible, and I've tried nearly everything on the menu at this point. The drinks are infinitely better than the Starbucks next door, plus there's rarely a line. My favorites are the champurrado (tastes like a warm hug) and the horchata, but the lattes are good, too. I stopped by around 4 PM on a Tuesday, and it wasn't busy at all (though the original Starbucks next door was incredibly busy as always). Maiz is an unassuming store on the outside, but on the inside, it is very clean aesthetically (and hygenically). There is a very hip tile aesthetic to the small store. Maiz is known for their homemade masa, which they use to make their tortillas. It really does make a difference. Homemade tortillas are already so good, but these are really the best that I have had (though note that I am not the most advanced judge). The meats/flavors they have vary per day, and they update a little chalkboard by the cash register. It feels very hole-in-the-wall in that way. On their website, it has a rotating menu of the meats, but it didn't align that day with what they had in their store. I've only been once, so I can't say if that is the norm or not. When I went, I got tacos with chicken with salsa verde, chicken mole, and carnitas. Yes, that is 9 tacos since each order comes with 3 tacos. It would have been great to be able to get a "variety pack" but it made me feel not so guilty about ordering 9 tacos. heh. My favorite was the carnitas since it had such a beautiful smoky chipotle flavor. The meats were quite distinct and very different from each other, so I was really glad that I did get a variety. The meats were excellent though the tortillas were really what elevated these tacos to become my favorite in Seattle. I want to come back and try more flavors and their other offerings. I have only tried their tacos, which hardly seem like scratching the surface here. read more

I'm picky about my Mexican food because I hold it to such high standard, and Maíz did not disappoint. This food was SO GOOD and so fresh. We had - tamales (chicken & rajas) -tlacoyos -huarache (potatoes and chorizo) The dishes come with salsas which are not really spicy (IMO green salsa better than red salsa) The horchata isn't too sweet, this was okay. The champurrado was delicious and tastes like home. The menus isn't really detailed, but the staff are super friendly so ask any questions you may have. There isnt really any seating except for one set of stools along the window. So it might be best to grab the food to go. There's a nice grassy area a couple hundred feet away with some benches or you can bring a blanket to enjoy a picnic. read more

As someone who grew up in Arizona, I'm always looking for spots to satisfy my Mexican food cravings. I kept seeing maiz on lists of best taco spots in Seattle, so when I was in the area, I was excited to try it out! The space is pretty small, with only room for maybe 10 people inside at a time (and only room for about 4 people to sit at the counter). When I first arrived, there was only one person working both the register and assembling orders, so things were a bit slow until another employee returned. I got the taco plate with tinga de pollo, ranchero beef, and pastor. I really enjoyed the flavors of the pastor and was super excited after my first bite, but I soon realized that the tortilla, although very fresh, was cold, which wasn't an enjoyable experience. If the tortilla was warmed I would've had no complaints! I thought the beef and chicken were just ok, but the house salsa was tasty as well. Overall I think it's definitely worth a stop to get the pastor tacos, and I'd be curious to try the tamales as well. read more

While walking along the strip of Pike Place market my family decided to split a yummy treat! We ordered the Chilaquiles and what phenomenal decision that was on my behalf! It was truly delicious the salsa and chips were be dry fresh. There was minimal seating area but the scenery and area around the market provides plenty of seating options to enjoy your food.
