Popped into Maiz since it was one of the few locations still open when we arrived. It's a small space with very limited seating. Coming from TX, we were somewhat skeptical of trying a taco joint in WA, but boy were we wrong! This place makes its own tortillas from fresh corn that they source from quality suppliers. The tamales are large that 2 were plenty for a meal. We tried their specialty coffee that uses corn as the base and it was delicious. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly. Would love to go back next time we're in the area!
Sadly disappointed by how much the quality deteriorated. The delicious, flavorful tacos I remember eating here in the past were sadly replaced by tacos with dry, tough meat. Idk if they are trying to do low-carb or what, but it didn't seem like there was any fatty goodness in any of the 3 tacos I ordered. Birria, carnitas, and pork pastor - none of them were juicy or flavorful. The tacos were only meat and radishes. No onion or cilantro. One of the unique aspects of this place is that they make authentic corn tortillas made from 100% heirloom corn sourced from small farms. However, today the tortillas were dry and tough at the edges. All in all, quite a disappointment. I feel bad to have recommended several friends to come here for their amazing tacos - not sure when the quality became so poor.
Decided to stop by to grab a quick bite while out exploring Pike Place Market. It's a very small space, very simple but with fun decor and limited seating. Service was quick and staff were friendly. The tamale was delicious, the heirloom masa really does make a difference and the meat was very flavorful. Would definitely recommend stopping by
This store is right next to the Starbucks in Pike place, so it's easy to miss behind the giant Starbucks line. But this is actually a great store with particularly unique tortillas. They nixtamalize their flour in house and you can definitely taste the difference in the tortillas. Coming from LA I've had my fair share of great tacos. But these are almost as good. While the tortillas are clearly the star, their meats are quite decent too. Though not as tender as I would have liked, the seasoning and toppings were spot on and the salsa was great. If the meat was a little bit better, I would have given it 5 stars, but there is still room to improve. If you're in visiting pike place and looking for really authentic Mexican food, this is definitely the place. It's a small little store without too much room to eat in store, but there is so much public area nearby to eat. I recommend taking out and watching the waterfront from the park.
Food is so good! Menu could use some descriptions for those of us less familiar with items like tlacoyo or gorditas and prices were a bit high but we really enjoyed our quick lunch here.
Didn't try too much from here because I was pretty full but I got the Jamaica Auga Fresca which was pretty good! Kind of like sweeter cranberry juice. The staff were super friendly and welcoming! Place was pretty packed. Limited indoor seating, more of a take out place. The decor was beautiful and their tiles are hilarious. Chill vibes and music playing in the restraint.
O. M. G. Their Beef Ranchero taco was, hands down, THE best taco I've had EVER in the US. As the kids today say, "Period." The flavors, fresh ingredients, perfect blend of textures - ¡excelente! The gentleman who took my order said their tacos were most popular (I was deciding between tacos and gorditas), so I went with that. Had the steak ranchero and chicken tacos. Tender, flavorful shredded beef in the handmade, perfectly sized for hand-holding tortilla was everything I needed for my rumbling stomach. Chicken was good as well, but not life changing like the steak, haha. I still want to try the gorditas, but I can't guarantee I won't just get 3 steak rancheros next time, lol. All the employees were kind and welcoming. Restaurant was decorated nicely - honoring Mexican culture. And it took no more than 5 minutes - if that - to get my 2 tacos. Thank you, Maiz, for bringing an authentic Taste of Mexico to the Pacific Northwest!!
Right next door to the original Starbucks, this place has much better coffee plus a shorter line. Order maiz coffee, or latte Ingles for regular milk. Great service! Great place to rest your feet while sipping coffee.
I was looking for a little pick me up caffeine drink when I came across this spot. It was cute and colorful and instantly caught my eye. Once inside, the staff greeted us right away and were very nice and welcoming. I decided to try the iced horchata latte which is actually made with horchata and then they add a espresso shot, as opposed to most places that do a syrup, yuck. This was the absolute best horchata latte, great quality espresso and drink overall. I will be dreaming about it for days, highly recommend it!
Heirloom corn lime and salt makes for a nice clean tortilla. Six dollars for six pack or $10 for a 12 pack. However, I went to pay and they charge me $7.50 for a six pack. I asked about that and they said it was taxes which doesn't make sense that would've been $6.60 approximately. When I printed the receipt, it showed a 15% service charge. Totally support taking care of their staff but they really need to put that information upfront. The manager came by and pointed to a small sign on the credit card machine that I think maybe says something about it, but I could not read it . It was tiny, and the staff seemed to not be aware of it and misinformed. They really need to improve their communication and signage They don't have any other food options - if you're plant based but they said, maybe their other location does. please improve this communication Consider a vegan pozole option.
SO GOOD! love the local ingredients and LOVE the flavor! i got the shrimp ceviche on tostadas (2 per order, for $20). they were loaded, lots of fresh pieces of shrimp, lots of fresh crisp veggies, it was flavorful, limey, the tostadas had a wonderful crunch. i got the hot sauce on the side and it was definitely hot but also very flavorful! definitely a messy eat, but just gotta embrace it! service was kind and they answered my questions! got my food really quick too. a bit pricey but tastes so good so i will be back to try their tacos/other menu items! theres several bar seats in the restaurant, but i definitely recommend crossing the street and sitting on the waterfront walkway!
First time here, we only ordered drinks. We got a hot champurrado & an iced horchata latte. Champurrado - not too sweet, flavor is very rich on the chocolate, it's like a hot chocolate but it was good. Horchata latte - really well balanced with the cinnamon and espresso. A good combination, I thought the espresso would overpower the flavor but it doesn't & I thought it would be overly sweet but it's not, it's perfect. We didn't get to try their food but we will definitely be going back to try it. They are located on the same strip as the first Starbucks in pike place so if you want to try something new I would check them out! Service was great, wonderful people!
IF I COULD GIVE 6 STARS I WOULD!! The food is so flavorful and you can really taste the freshness of the corn products!! They definitely deserve the glowing reputation they have!! I had the sopes and they were so delicious!! The sopes themselves were so perfectly cooked, the outside was crispy but the inside had a more chewy texture where you could really taste the freshness and sweetness of the corn! The filling was also very flavorful, not too spicy but you could taste many spices without being overwhelmed by spiciness. The food definitely felt good on the stomach. The atmosphere is wonderful with Mexican decorations and music playing. It is a tiny place (4-5 stools) but is SO worth a visit if possible! The staff are so nice and friendly! You can watch them cooking and they are very nice to talk to! They source their produce from family farms in Mexico so you know your food is actually helping people rather than large agribusinesses. read more

Loved, loved, loved their mole tacos!! To die for. And tortillas were pretty good. I am thrilled they were open this late. We came down because of the Figgy Pudding Caroling. Some stores were open supporting the vibe of the event. They were one of those. I wanted to try a twist for Pinole. Maíz would have a latte for Pinole and for Horchata. Who would have known? I couldn't taste the Horchata flavour. It was also sweet to my taste but Pinole was flavourly and good to the palate. I liked the feeling of Pinole :) I felt the energy for a couple of hours :D Tacos... I am talking about tacos again because they were amazing! We also had the chorizo one and so good. Fav place for these for sure! They have a bar by yhe window were you can take your meal and eat. PS forgot to take a picture because I devour them :S read more

Huarache - Delicious!!!!!! Atole - very good Pork tamale - very good The fact that Maíz supports diversity of corn varieties in addition to making absolutely delicious food makes this spot a gem! People line up outside to visit the neighboring spot, which is the first Starbucks, but pro tip: you have to go to Maíz first and get some delicious food before you head out to stand in line. It's worth it! read more

Maiz is a solid spot for tacos and quesadillas, or heck, anything with their freshly made corn tortillas! You can't go wrong here and it's a spot to not miss out on if you're craving quality, Mexican bites at Pike Place Market. As soon as you take a bite, you can instantly tell there was a lot of love that went into the food. We visited Maiz on a Saturday to check out this newer spot in the market. The shop is small, with only bar seating inside by the window and a counter where you order. The menu was straightforward with a handful of different items, like tacos, quesadillas, tamales, hot chocolate, etc. We ordered three quesadillas with the different proteins of beef, pork and chicken. The difference between the quesadilla and taco is that the quesadilla has cheese. It didn't take long for us to get our food, and I enjoyed all of the different meat options for the quesadillas. However, if I had to pick a favorite I'd say the pork was my favorite. On top of all the quesadillas were pickled red onions, radishes and there was a side of salsa. They were tasty, and I'm glad I tried this gem out. read more
Stumbled at this place while checking Pike Place. We needed something warm and decided to go in here and try an Horchata Latte. The server was quick and attentive to get us our latte. They sell tortillas, tamales, pan dulce and sopes among other delicious snacks! read more

We had time before our flight so we decided to do the touristy thing and go to Pike place. We walked around and wanted something warm to drink. The lady behind the counter was very helpful, I asked her about a couple of the drinks and got her opinion between 2 I was considering. I ended up getting the atole latte and it was delicious. My companion got the horchata latte and also enjoyed it. The place is small but cute and clean. Overall a good experience. read more

I love tacos, and this spot didn't disappoint. First off, as the name suggests, it's all about the corn tortillas. They're homemade with heirloom corn varieties, which means they're fresh and have a great depth of flavor. (There are bottles of different varietals of dried corn scattered around the restaurant with labels on them so you can learn about the different kinds.) I got three tacos: two tinga de pollo and one veggie. The filling was flavorful. It came with spicy green salsa on the side, which I enjoyed for some extra heat and flavor. This spot is at Pike Place Market (right next door to the "original" Starbucks), so it was busy when we went, but service was friendly and our food came out quickly. The shop itself is tiny, and there is only one spot to eat (a bar by the window with four stools) so be prepared to wait to sit, or take your food to go and find a spot by the water, or eat while walking. I spent just over $23 for three tacos, including tax + tip. Is it more than I'm used to paying in my small city? Yes. It it worth it to support a local, family-run, Latino-owned small business that is on a mission to preserve heirloom, non-GMO corn variety and uses fresh ingredients? To me -- yes! If you're looking for tasty, high-quality tacos, check out this spot. read more

Fairly new addition to Pike Place. Cool that the tortillas used in the menu items here are handmade (apparently if you visit at the right time you can see the tortillas actually being made). Tried the carnitas and bistec (steak) tacos. Loved how chunky the carnitas pieces were (no skimping on the meat!). The bistec was a bit dry. My most favorite part was the pickled onion. It was scrumptious. Super flavorful and crispy! As much as I wanted to really appreciate the tortillas used for the tacos, the edge of some of the tortillas were completely dried out making those parts have an unpleasant tough chew to them. Overall pretty decent place if you're looking for some taco fare at Pike Place. read more

A new Seattle favorite. We went three times in one trip! All three times for my new obsession, the champurrado. The most delicious, creamy, warm, cozy beverage. Just get a large. Twice we got quesadillas. They are taco sized with cheese. All the meats we tried (steak ranchero, pork carnitas, pork pastor, chicken tinga,) were flavorful and tender. My favorite was steak ranchero, my husband refused to choose a favorite. I don't normally love a corn tortilla, but the flavor and texture of these tortillas are both perfect. If you like Mexican food, you're guaranteed to love Maiz. read more

I got the carnitas and chicken tacos. Although the tortilla was homemade it wasn't that good. Also the tacos are tiny !! And each taco is like 6$. Thankfully the taco was loaded w a lot of meat. It was ok but I've had better tacos for a better price. read more

I've heard of Maiz as an interesting place to go and try sound delicious and freshly made ingredients, especially tortillas! We went on a Saturday around 2pm and there wasn't a particularly long wait - around 5-10 from waiting in line to getting our food. The atmosphere of the restaurant is small and cozy, there are a good amount of windows lining the shop that allows for people passing by to see how freshly made corn tortillas are made - tortillas made here are made the old way, keeping more of nutrients from the corn. This method does make the restaurant run more on the warmer side if you decide to dine in, just a heads up if you stopping by on a warmer day. I got the Tacos and the Horchata Latte, both were delicious and refreshing options. You can definitely taste the freshness of the tortillas, they just have a certain oomph compared to other tortillas that I've had before - You can taste the corn and there is a slightly more pleasing grainy texture. The fillings in the tacos were a variety of options on the menu, I think one was barbacoa-like beef (bottom), middle was chicken, and the top was a stewed vegetable taco - the fillings were more on the saucy side and though there was spicy chili sauce provided on the side, I thought they were already delicious as the way they were. The Horchata Latte was delicious and very refreshing! There was a nice earthy taste that was from the cinnamon - the drink was nice and creamy and I think there were some very small chunks of almonds in the horchata, which was tasty! Though I did wish they I got a bit more horchata as I finished the cup you see here pretty fast. Overall, spent about $20 for everything you see here - which I thought was an alright price given the quantity and quality that you see here. I am definitely a fan of their tortillas as they were absolutely delicious - I would definitely like to revisit to try the other options that Maiz has to offer! read more

Amazing new location at pike market. They are very very friendly there. I ordered 3 tacos and 3 quesadillas. They gave me to try their home made tortilla that they make from corn that they bring from Mexico. The guy was very friendly there he warmed complementary tortilla with salt and It was so delicious. quesadillas comes in small size like tacos the only difference was that they put cheese on it, otherwise its same like tacos. Unfortunately they were out of chicken so I took both tacos & quesadilla with the beef. It was very delicious and juicy. I will be back for more. read more

I read about Maiz in an article a few weeks back and I really wanted to try it. But, as a local, I really struggle with fending the crowds at Pike Place. Maiz is totally worth the trek through the crowds lining up for Starbucks they could get a block away. The tamales are excellent. I LOVE all the different displays of corn kernels in jars - such a cool way to appreciate the varieties that we don't often see. The coffee is also delicious (try to horchata latte), and you definitely need to try the hot chocolate which is imported from Mexico. read more
What can be said about Maiz that hasn't been? It's great. Look at the average review. We're driving over from the Eastside just for a Maiz lunch if that says anything. Go to Maiz and have a taco. The horchata latte thing not so much but definitely a taco. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Maíz. It's a small restaurant located right next to the original Starbucks. We arrived right after they opened and they were busy! Indoor seating is very limited so you might have to find seating elsewhere if there's already a crowd. Luckily, by the time we got our food, there was a space available so we were able to enjoy our brunch with a great ambience. Also, se habla español! We ordered horchata to drink with our chilaquiles & sopes. Maíz is the first restaurant I have encountered that serves authentic tasting horchata. I highly encourage any visitors to get one before you leave the market! For the chilaquiles, I requested the toppings on the side & the sauce was delicious - I only wish I had requested more sauce to thoroughly cover the chips! For the sopes, they had 3 different flavors that vary. We added cheese to them and ate them right away. I will absolutely be returning to Maíz during my next visit to Pike Place Market. read more
I love supporting and trying new businesses - but unfortunately this one let me down a bit. I asked what they recommended - they pointed me to an order of tacos & tamales. I spent $30 on these 2 "plates" - assuming it would be a sufficient meal. The portions were TINY. We're not huge eaters, but were still left hungry. 3 small tacos with no sides - flavor if the meat was pretty good but I expected the tortillas to be better given it's their signature. 2 tamales - again pretty small and these came with a side of beans (literally like 2 tablespoons of beans?) There wasn't much filling in them so they were pretty dry and bland. I really wanted to like this place, but there are just much better options for similar food in the market. read more

This is a little spot in Pike Place Market. I heard about the homemade tortillas and had to try. I got chicken tinga, carnitas, and al pastor tacos and MAN were they all flavorful! My favorite was the carnitas, but I devoured every single bite. They came with a salsa that was dark red and smoky, which sometimes I don't like, but this was balanced enough to not be overpowering. Truly the tacos don't need any extra flavor, but it was nice to have. The staff up front was very kind and the wait wasn't too long. Highly recommend! read more

After wading through the throng of Pike Place tourists waiting in line for all the Instagramable foods, we arrived at Maíz, an oasis of antojitos y más. As my friend has Celiac disease, we made extra sure that the food and the preparation were safe for her and, hooray, they are! We each ordered the taco platter, three tacos with our choice of filling. We each had the pollo de Mexicano, bistec, and picadillo, with bistec winning the top taco rank. The tortillas were fresh and delicious and the happiest little tortillas that ever were. If you REALLY need to put something on the 'gram, the food is gorgeous, the shop adorable, but the TILE MURAL is the perfect backdrop for the ubiquitous "if you don't post it, it didn't happen" pics. read more

Have you seen the 1st Starbucks at the Pike? Well, this place is right next to it and I was told it is quite new and authentic. It's true! It's delicious and authentic. Their tortillas and tostadas are made out real corn/maíz (even blue maíz) Ans it really makes a difference flavor wise. Their menu includes: quesadillas, sopes, huaraches, tamales and champurrado (which is a type of atole: sweet hot beverage made out of corn), gorditas... AND they have veggie options besides chicken, beef, pork, etc. To be honest I was expecting get chilaquiles with a side of frijoles (beans,) but I was told that MAÍZ is more like a "food to go " so they can't offer sides. Too bad. Anyways, chilaquiles were so yummy and not too spicy. You can dine in but they have very few spots (just keep this in mind) Opens at 10am, the line forms quickly, but it worths the wait. I need to come back to taste the esquites (corn, lime, cheese, Mayo and Chile piquín) read more
The staff was really nice and polite and the space itself was pretty cool. We got the veggie tacos and the cheese tamales. The tacos were good but not great but it was really neat to find tacos that have cactus in them because that's not generally what you find. The tamales were okay. They weren't super flavorful and for a cheese tamale, there wasn't much cheese at all. read more
Ambience -5/5 Food Quality - 5/5 Food Quantity -4/5 Revisit Again -5/5 Staff Service -5/5 Value for money -4/5 Our Vegeterian Order: 1. Veggie Tacos 2. Veggie Chilaqules 3. Elote Hole in the wall that you may just miss as its next to the famous first starbucks in pike place. But once you are in MAIZ...you would teleport to Todas Santos!! The vibe, ambience, decir, music took me back to my trip to Cabos and Todas and completely was a nostalgic moment for me!! The staff is extremely kind and patiently explains you all the dishes and listens to your customization and makes suggestions. Being a vegetarian it can get tricky to get vegetarian mexican food especially when the beans have animal fat or chorrizo...the staff understands what vegetarian means and adheres to serving just that! I was extremely delighted with their recommendations and the food was just delicious. We had 3 red corn veggie tacos and 1 Chilaqules which were both very flavorful, delicious and perfect for a light lunch. Its a buzy place with mostly takeouts and has tons of other options to order from too. Not to forget their lattes sell like hot cakes everyone were ordering them and maybe we will come back again to try them too!! Pricing wise the quantity could be a little more. But the quality is undoubtedly amazing! All in all I LOVE MAIZ ....im so glad we came across this place and is my new favorite amongst others in pike place! Will be back to try more soon, a must visit! read more

I wandered into Maiz the other day and tried their Pinole Latte, which was so, so excellent. I'm super into the world of Central and South American coffee and food right now, and this has been a top favorite. I had mine with almond milk. It was just the right sweetness as well, and beautifully balanced flavor. Had the Cafe de Olla the next day, which was also lovely. High recommendations. Service was also excellent! read more
My mother in law and husband came in to order some food while I went to the bakery a few doors down. If you know that bakery, you know the line is loooong. By the time I came back to them here, they were still waiting for their food. Despite this, they really enjoyed it. They said it was fresh and tasty. They also enjoyed that you could buy other products. While we were there, a few of their main products in the menu were not available, including some drinks, which was a bit of a bummer. It seems like they're still working on fully being set up so we look forward to seeing them at their full potential. read more

Mom and pop taco shop next to the original Starbucks coffee shop! Delicious! One of a kind! The tostada hit the spot with a glass bottle coke! I stopped by around 4 PM on a Tuesday, and it wasn't busy at all (though the original Starbucks next door was incredibly busy as always). Maiz is an unassuming store on the outside, but on the inside, it is very clean aesthetically (and hygenically). There is a very hip tile aesthetic to the small store. Maiz is known for their homemade masa, which they use to make their tortillas. It really does make a difference. Homemade tortillas are already so good, but these are really the best that I have had (though note that I am not the most advanced judge). The meats/flavors they have vary per day, and they update a little chalkboard by the cash register. It feels very hole-in-the-wall in that way. On their website, it has a rotating menu of the meats, but it didn't align that day with what they had in their store. I've only been once, so I can't say if that is the norm or not. When I went, I got tacos with chicken with salsa verde, chicken mole, and carnitas. Yes, that is 9 tacos since each order comes with 3 tacos. It would have been great to be able to get a "variety pack" but it made me feel not so guilty about ordering 9 tacos. heh. My favorite was the carnitas since it had such a beautiful smoky chipotle flavor. The meats were quite distinct and very different from each other, so I was really glad that I did get a variety. The meats were excellent though the tortillas were really what elevated these tacos to become my favorite in Seattle. I want to come back and try more flavors and their other offerings. I have only tried their tacos, which hardly seem like scratching the surface here. read more
