I am floored by this place. I just had a BLAT with cranberry sauce added (so basically the bird with lettuce) and I was beyond impressed. Let's get the basics out of the way- yes the meat and veggies are fresh, yes the prices are affordable, yes the guy working the front is a pleasure to talk to (thanks for the conversation, Bertie!). This review is for the former New Yorkers living in Seattle.... After three years of searching and nearly giving up, I finally found a proper NYC bodega-style deli with Boar's Head meats. I am still in disbelief. Here is the run down: The prices are reasonable and the sandwiches are big and tasty. This is pretty much all you really need to know. What is really special about this place is the owner who memorizes your custom sandwich when you call to order on the third time. That's just awesome. It's also the narrow aisles stacked to the ceiling that reminds me of all the NYC bodegas. They're stacked that high so they can stock all the random things you'll need, including an excellent beer selection. For a New Yorker, this place is like a homecoming. Oddly enough it was the sandwiches that I missed most (not pizza since that's well covered here). That issue is no longer. Lyon's Grocery is perfect. If you live/work in Seattle and have previously lived in NYC, do yourself a favor and go here to remind yourself that we truly do have it all in Seattle. read more

It's like if you cross a Bentley with a Circle K. You get the quality of Circle K goods with the prices of a Bentley. By far the most expensive convenience store on the planet. But what they do have going for them is they are the only small market within walking distance of their area. I'm a regular here and I've had most of the sandwiches on the board at this point. They used to have an old crab working the counter but now it's just the two nice guys and the woman who makes some of the greatest sandwiches I've ever tasted in my life. If you're looking for a dynamite hot sandwich, get The Mangia or The Caribbean Beef (if the latter happens to be available; it's a sandwich that comes and goes in and out of my life like a mysterious tide). Good selection of groceries for a small market. Prices are the way they are because little neighborhood places like Lyon's--delis and markets that are staffed with friendly people who care about their regulars, carry a good selection of wine and beer, and pay their workers fairly--are having to compete with chain grocery stores and giant retailers like, oh I don't know, Amazon? You know: the place that is quite literally right down the street? For people whining about that: I encourage you to think about how much spending a few extra bucks on groceries adds to the value of a neighborhood by supporting an independently run grocer. Not terrible. Not great. I guess that's why they call these little places "Convenience Stores" and not Grocery Stores. This place is probably 40% candy, 50% Drinks and the rest is a coin toss. The one thing really annoying about this place, in that it's so close to the Lake and loaded with beer, soda and wine. There is no ice sold here! Not very convenient and kind of short sighted by the owner. Now instead of buying stuff here twice a week like I surely would, I find myself driving five minutes up the hill to buy ice at Safeway, oh and while I'm there they have EVERYTHING else there is to buy. So, unless I've got a craving for the King Size Mike n Ikes, I just find myself driving past this little stop. read more

The staff here is friendly but the prices are mean! I stop by pretty often because it's down the street from me and the store has good hours (open until 10pm) - some items are around the normal price you would expect, but then other items will have you thinking "you gotta be f***ing kidding me" as you put it back down. They have a nice little selection of wine, but not so much with the beer....they also don't carry a very big selection of juices or soda, which is disappointing....and there's no ATM! This little grocery has some seriously amazing sandwiches, we had the Bird and the TX Beef, both were awesome. The Bird has sliced turkey and cranberry, it totally hit the spot. This place is convenient if you live nearby. Other than that don't make a special trip here because the service has always been subpar. They advertise their sandwiches constantly with a chalkboard on the sidewalk even when the deli is closed. Love this place! Great little grocery store that is clean and well stocked with a surprising selection of products. The main reason I come here regularly though is the amazing sandwiches and service! I have tried many of there sandwiches on their great menu and all of them have been awesome! They use top notch ingredients and make these with care and go the extra mile with a little peppermint patty and pickle in the bag. I miss the bitter, autistic guy who used to work the counter. While rocking back and forth, he always made cool observations like: "...all those college frat guys...they graduate and work in all of the new corporate buildings in South Lake Union..they'll either make it or end up working here" As a couple of folks have mentioned, the prices are outrageous by any standard. $6 grocery store wine that usually costs $8 at 7-Eleven can cost $10-$12 (and up)!
