This place is great! Whenever I visit my family here in Wheaton I'm sure to make a much needed visit here for some yummy Vietnamese and Chinese food. Absolutely love their banh xeo. Very disappointed in tonight's experience. We've eaten here many times. My pho was just ok. When asked how everything was I mentioned that the fact that there were only 2 shrimp in the bowl was disappointing. I was told it's a single serving and you could add more but you'd have to pay more. This is the only place locally that they only add 2 shrimp. The shrimp fried rice my friend had had tiny shrimp and not many of them. I don't remember them skimping on proteins before. This was probably our last visit. Across the street from this restaurant is one of my favorite breweries, Dry City. Like most breweries, they don't serve food, but you have the option of bringing in your own food. So I'm always looking for a new place to order food from, pick it up and head over for some tasty beers at the brewery and this was one of the places I chose. I chose it because I saw a similar table bring in their Pho at a previous visit to the brewery and watched them slurp up the noodles my entire visit. If you aren't familiar with with Pho, you need to be. It's a Vietnamese dinner soup. The soup itself can be made with many broths. I chose the special which is a beef broth with 2 types of beef and plenty of noodles. The soup itself is loaded with flavor, and as you can see from the picture it comes with plenty of add ins. The add ins consist of jalapeños, cilantro, basil, bean sprouts, and lime. I obviously added them all which just added to the broth. The price of the soup isn't bad at all. The food here is consistently very good, and they are allergy friendly, which is great for my kids and I. The service is always excellent whether dining in or picking up food to go ... The staff are always friendly and greet you with a warm welcome, and when dining in the food arrives in a timely manner. They also keep your cups of water filled, not that this is a huge thing but it's one of those nice courtesy's that gives you a sense of feeling valued and attended to as a customer. During 20 mile bike ride, stopped at this nice Vietnamese restaurant in downtown Wheaton. Looks like owned by a family (grandpa type person was waiting tables and a young son was acting as a manager) who were all very polite. I had a lunch combination with sliced pork and chicken, veggie, spring rolls, soup and rice. I used to go to this restaurant quite often many years ago, and tried it again the other day to see if it was as good as I had remembered. Unfortunately, it really isn't. The beef was thin, chewy, and dry and the additions to the beef bun were sparse...cucumber and iceberg lettuce. The spring rolls were just full of lettuce and bean sprouts, small tasteless shrimp with very little flavor overall. Also, the sauce for the spring rolls was not nearly as tasty a peanut sauce as I remembered and have had elsewhere. I will say the service was very good, although what I got was carry out. But I was observing the service for a while, and the gentleman was very fast and courteous. And the young man who brought my order to me was also very pleasant. I ordered the number 18, which is pho with the special meat. I would say the pho was definitely mediocre at best, nothing really special about it. PRICES for most dishes fairly high! One size only for most items, rather small in size, but priced as a large dish. Not an inexpensive restaurant! Chinese Cuisine has been my favorite dining experience at a host of great restaurants for more years than I hate to admit--but not Vietnamese cuisine. Someone commented earlier about the sweetness of the items ordered. That was my experience as well. Every item ordered was sweet--way too sweet. I hate to admit it, but I threw away ALL the contents of FOUR items, and only partially ate the fried rice, which itself was sweet, and too dry, and didn't have much chicken. Both soups were ABSOLUTELY the WORST ever in a Chinese/Asian restaurant! Extremely bland--amost like dish water! Just an overall terrible dining experience! But, if you like the ambience of dining in, and don't much care about food one way or another, or perhaps have a "sweet tooth," or just love sugar, then it may be just the place for you! I ordered the lunch special with grilled chicken and bbq pork over rice. The first thing I noticed was that it was on the smaller portion size. It looks like a lot but it's really spread apart thinly on a plate. Not a big deal because you're only paying $8. My main gripe about it was that both meats were very dry. The pork was hardly cooked how it should have been. Instead of being moist and tender and a little fatty, it came out like jerky. The best thing about the meal was probably the fish sauce mixture and the spring roll. Even the rice seemed a bit old to me. I've had this place bookmarked for over two years and I was pretty disappointed in it. The thing that really bothered me was I felt like the employees, clearly a family or close friends, all seemed to hover around you except for the one guy in the back who didn't move. He stood there like the Pho final boss. It's nice to see pho making a stand in a smaller suburb. We had some time to enjoy this little causal spot in downtown Wheaton. Our server recommended the shrimp pork pancake appetizer, and it was simply outstanding. The salad under the chicken was similarly iceberg lettuce with little character or flavor. There are better options in the city. Reasonable price for what you got. Luong Loi seems to be run by a small family business - every time I come, we're served by incredibly sweet servers who always keep an eye on us to meet our every need when we want it. It's located in downtown Wheaton, so it has a close walking proximity to other local stores and coffee shops nearby. Super ideal spot, especially if you want a warm bowl of pho in the cold weather! One of my favorite appetizers here are their chicken wings delight--I don't know what it's in the sauce they fry their chicken in but it's so savory and delicious, and the fried onions that they're served with make it even better. I order it almost every time I come because the flavor is so good! Their iced coffee is also amazing. They mix it with condensed milk, so it's commonly called Vietnamese coffee. It's way cheaper to buy it here with your meal than at other regular coffee shops! read more

Overall this restaurant hasn't changed much since my last review and over the years. However, for me they have made an important change which has pushed it into the five star category. It used to be that the Pho came with rice noodles or egg noodles. I am a diabetic so it is better for me to have bean thread noodles. These noodles are made from beans instead of wheat and they are absolutely delicious! If you are vegan, vegetarian, or wheat intolerant you can get them with vegetables and tofu if you don't want them in a soup. I used to have to ask for the pho without noodles. Then I would have to purchase a side of bean thread noodles and add them to the pho. Now you have the ability to choose whichever noodles you want and they will be added. I moved away from Wheaton before Luong Loi relocated across the street and I was concerned that their food may have changed. I'm visiting friends and family in the area and had a taste for their exquisite lemongrass chicken with onions. Plenty of tender chicken and perfectly sautéed onions! A beautiful balance of flavors and spices, super fresh, not overcooked and served HOT. Just the way I like it. There is a side of super crisp, chilled cucumber slices, very ripe fresh juicy tomato slices and crispy chopped lettuce. I like to mix the lettuce in with the chicken and onions. My appetizer is always the pork egg rolls with dipping sauce because the rolls are so tasty, crispy and hot, and the inside is a compact, flavorful mix of pork, shredded carrots and cabbage... they're so succulent you don't even need the dipping sauce, but if you do? Takes it over the top! Honestly, this meal is SO amazing I actually daydream about it since moving away because I haven't found the equivalent anywhere since... and BINGO! Just as I remembered! Honestly, I love this so much it's the only dish I can comment on, but give them a try and order your fave Vietnamese dish! The new place is a nice upgrade! It's a very warm, clean and inviting atmosphere with exposed old brick, wood floors, dark stained wooden tables and chairs, all softly lit by simple pendant lamps above each table. Check them out! I've driven past here a few times and always tell myself that next time I'm looking for a place to eat at I will remember this. Well yesterday was the day. I was starving and did not know what I exactly had a taste for, started driving and I remembered this place. Was able to snag a parking spot not to far and we made our way over. It took a bit for someone to come over but it was ok because it gave us a chance to look over the menu. So many choices! I chose the egg drop soup to start with. OMG was it good!!! Full of flavor and a decent size. I've only had this soup from the delivery places by me and this blew all of them out of the ball park. For dinner we went with the Mongolian beef over rice and the grilled lemongrass chicken with rice noodles. Once again, this Mongolian beef didn't taste like any I've had before. It was rich, flavorful and a decent size portion. The lemongrass chicken was also delicious. It came with rice noodles, a carrot sauce, fresh sprouts and cucumber slices. This dish was something that I had never had before, I loved the taste of the carrot sauce, that's what the server called it, it was a simple sauce that went over the grilled chicken pieces and over the noodles. This is my go to for Asian take out when my suburban self is craving that big city hole in the wall take-out vibe. This is a long standing family run business in the area and they clearly put a lot of care and attention into their work. Food is always ready on-time, staff is friendly, and the food always hits the spot. My current obsessions are the popstickers and chicken fried rice. I find both to be flavorful and cooked just right. I'll also say the take-out container looks small but they pack an unholy amount in there! My partner and father-in-law (who has quite picky taste) also have loved every dish they've tried. I've never dined-in so I can't speak to that, the dining space is very small, but clean, tidy, and inviting looking.
