    Beautiful matching china.

Korean style Chinese, which is a little hard to find. Good job on my favorite Zhajiangmian. I love the food here, service is good, typical Korean meaning not what mainstream Americans generally expect. Too much wasteful plastic on take out.

After seeing the reviews, we had to try this place. It's right on Butterfield in a strip mall. The decor is a little dated and the restaurant was fairly empty on a Friday evening. We were seated and taken care of by the incredible staff. Everyone was so kind and answered any questions we had about the menu. We stuck to our usual orders just to compare to our regular haunts, and we all agreed that the food here was superior to our usual spots. We will definitely be going back, and soon! Our favorite was the wings, super crispy and well sauced! Not spicy, a little sweet, very well balanced! They even heated up well the next day! The food did take a little longer than we were used to but our waitress made it a point to tell us everything is made to order, including the fresh noodles! All the food was fantastic! I can't wait to go back and take my parents.

There's something comforting about Mandarin House a Chinese Korean restaurant that serves up familiar dishes in a large suburban strip mall. The vibe is very much a clean Chinese restaurant with its familiar linens and Chinese zodiac place setting. Service is straightforward, but not rude. I came for the jjangmyeon, and it didn't disappoint. There's nothing quite like pork, black bean sauce, and noodles that never gets old. Also got some pea tips, beef chow fun noodles, and lollipopped chicken which was fantastic. I wish Mandarin House was closer. I'd be here all the time! If you're looking for regular Chinese dishes, you'll be satisfied but be sure to check out the Korean-Chinese dishes too.

I was craving Chinese food so we came to Mandarin House, which is a unique fusion of Korean and Chinese dishes. The restaurant has a menu filled with many different kinds of dishes, from poultry, to fish, to vegetarian, to specialty dishes. The standout dish for me was the liang pi. Definitely the most unique thing I've tasted before, and very different from the Szechuan version of the dish. This one had veggies, eggs, a variety of meat, and noodles all tossed together in a mustard sauce. My husband and I also got the wonton soup, which had a surprising amount of veggies in the broth. The hunan beef wasn't anything special, tasted just like any other Chinese takeout place. And the Beijing noodles had a great texture, but lacked flavor. I would definitely come back to try their other specialty dishes. Surprisingly, the menu also had other traditional Szechuan and Dim Sum dishes but I don't think that's their forte. You're probably better off getting their Korean-Chinese speciality dishes. Service was friendly. The waiters all spoke Korean. The food took a bit to be served, but the food was worth the wait. You get really generous portions of food for a reasonable price. We have leftovers for tomorrow's meal. Thanks for a unique dining experience!

I was surprised to find out that there was a Korean-Chinese restaurant in Oakbrook and had to visit Mandarin House. The restaurant is located in a plaza with plenty of parking spots available. Interior is classic Chinese restaurant. The menu is very extensive with lots of Chinese and Korean-Chinese options. Some of the staff were Korean speaking, which was nice. They were all very friendly and attentive. For food, we ordered the sesame beef, kampoong shrimp, and seafood jjampong. I have to say that the food is mid - it's not bad but not great. The flavors and spice levels both are weak. The sesame beef had great texture. The shrimp was too fried coat was too thick and soggy, and there wasn't enough sauce. Each dish felt slightly lacking, like they just needed a little bit more flavor or spice to be good. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are generous.

This was a special they said those these were supposed to be steamed oysters, but they look more clams

Saw this on yelp Mandarin house my wife and I said we will give it a try. This place used to be the old Olive Garden. Lee and Kathy The two waitresses that worked the dining room were outstanding friendly and extremely helpful. The food was not up to par like we're used we are from Chicago chinatown. We ordered their special lollipop Chicken was OK. Didn't really have the WOW factor we ordered Kung pao beef extremely salty, and vegetables look like those leftover from another meal We also ordered the special steamed oysters, eight in order they really look like they were clams for $13.95 They were terribly small and did not look like oysters, more like clams . we also ordered the salt pepper, tofu. It didn't have the texture like we're used to in Chicago Chinatown and it was tasteless. I really wanna give this place a higher mark, but didn't have the WOW l factor that were used to. They say this place is only been open for about a year. I wish them the best of luck.

12/11/24 update: The last time I came here it was when they first opened. Their service have gotten quicker, food was made fast and they all came at once. The servers have gotten better at being more attentive like checking to see if you need water refills or if you need anything else. I'm surprised this place isn't busier since they have so much seating. This time we ordered deep fried mantou, crispy duck (half duck), gan pong chicken wing, and seafood tofu casserole. Pricing is still reasonable for the large portions. Overall, my score is the same. About 4.5. It's a solid Chinese restaurant and one of my go to. Just a side note: it's painfully obvious which reviewers are non Asian, just by looking at what you ordered. Please stop with the lame dishes like beef fried rice, crab rangoon, egg drop soup, orange chicken, kung pao chicken, etc. They have a vast menu with different items. It's a great time to introduce yourself, your friends, your family to something new. You might enjoy it. -deep fried mantou 5 - Yes it came with the condensed milk to dip the mantou in. They were hot, crispy, and moist inside. I haven't had these in a long time but they were fresh. -crispy duck (half duck) 4 - I love duck and the meats were juicy. The reason I took off a point is because there were pieces with barely any meat on them. Too many bones. -gan pong chicken wing 5 - I like the savory sauce, it has a mild kick to it. Meat was crunchy and a sufficient amount of meat on each lollipop, -seafood tofu casserole 5 - I was surprised they added sea cucumbers to the dish, usually it costs more to add them. The dish had big pieces of tofu chunks, shrimp, scallops, and a lot of sea cucumbers. Very tasty dish.

We tried: Liang Jiang Pi - cold skin noodles Walnut Shrimp & Lollipop Chicken Peking Noodle - Ja Jiang Mien Jjamppong - spicy seafood noodle soup Salt & Pepper Fish Fillet Dim Sum - pork shumai, xiaolongbao, shrimp dumplings A near perfect Chinese feast! Liang Jiang Pi is not a common dish to find and it was executed perfectly down to each ingredient, especially the house made mustard sauce. Walnut Shrimp was cooked properly and good balance of creamy and sweet. Chicken lollipops were the best I've ever had. The jajiang Mien and Jjamppong soup both needed more flavor but the noodles were good. Salt and pepper fish flavor was on point but needs less breading. Dim sum is comparable to dim sum in Chicago Chinatown. Portions were great. No issues with service. Staff were very friendly. Restaurant is enormous; perfect for big groups.

I have had this restaurant on my list of places to try. We were seated right away and were given menus. Our lunch order was taken and our soup was brought out right away. After we finished our soups, our lunch entree was brought out. Over all the meal was good, we will be back!

My first visit was memorable and looking forward to feasting here again soon. I went for the namesake Mandarin Trio. All the meats were tasty and tender. Wait staff works together as a team to fulfill your every need. The inside is well maintained, although there was a musty smell when first entering.

We were seated promptly on Sunday evening around 7:40 pm. We were really thrilled to hear of this place from my family as it's really hard to find good Korean Chinese anywhere outside the northwest suburbs. We sat down and were offered both tea and iced water. So we ordered the basic Korean Chinese favorites: tangsuyuk (crispy sweet and sour beef), and jajangmyun (black bean noodles with pork). The taste of the black bean noodles were on point! A 5/5! The batter of the sweet and sour beef was great, but the sauce could've used a bit more sweetness and thickness. Overall, we got our food with a little bit of a wait, so we'll probably order to-go next time!

You will see hybrid Chinese and Korean signage as Mandarin House serves a twist on Chinese food in a style typically served in Korea. Really intriguing! Menu ranges from standard American Chinese to traditional Chinese to Korean flavored dishes. As such, staff is fluent and can serve you in English, Chinese, or Korean. Decor is a la old Americana Chinese restaurant. Did not really like the mango chicken, but walnut shrimp was great as usual. Looking forward to trying the more Korean inspired noodles and other dishes soon! Followup - later tried Korean-Chinese dishes in the liang jiang pi, tangsuyuk, and jjamppong. Spicy and satisfying all around!

This place is owned by a hardworking sweet family, who puts love into their food. You can taste it with the awesome Liang Jiang Pi dish which comes w a house made mustard sauce that you can't get anywhere else. It's such a beautiful and impressive dish. (I'll add a pic) The space is huge and great for big parties! The Korean-Chinese fare like jjajjangmyun, jjambong are done well. (Please be aware that mandarin house is owned by Chinese-Koreans, so these Chinese/korean dishes are expected) The GANG PONG CHICKEN LOLLIPOPS WERE AMAZING! Super crispy yet saucy and flavorful. Walnut shrimp was FIRE. The biggest shrimps I ever seen. Highly recommend this place from takeout to large parties. I will be coming back again soon!

Ask the Community - Mandarin House

Can jjajangmyun and tangsuyuk be made for vegetarian/vegan diners?

You could probably ask for the jjajangmyun to be made vegetarian, but the tangsuyuk has always traditionally been a meat dish. Unless the owners have a beyond meat or meat substitute, I doubt they could accommodate.

Unfortunately my wife is vegetarian and the seafood roll included fish eggs, so that obviously doesn't work. I called the restaurant to ask if the order could be remade and simply packaged separately. At first I was told no, and after speaking with the manager it turned into an unnecessarily difficult conversation before they finally agreed to remake it. What was most disappointing wasn't the initial mistake -- those happen -- but the attitude and unwillingness to correct something that was such a simple fix. As someone who works in the hospitality industry, I strongly believe that taking care of your guests and making things right should always come first. Losing a loyal customer over the cost of a few sushi rolls simply doesn't make sense. Restaurants, especially those serving seafood and shellfish, should be mindful that many guests have dietary restrictions, allergies, or lifestyle choices like vegetarian or vegan diets. Unless it's clearly stated otherwise, customers should be able to expect that separate items will be packaged separately. Unfortunately this experience has made me reconsider supporting a place I've visited and recommended many times before in Downers Grove. Hoping this is something they reflect on for the future.

In my experience, this signifies either the place was going to be a shithole to pass up, or it was a serious place to eat, then get out and go somewhere with an atmosphere. Happy to say J's (IMHO) is a serious place to eat. No-nonsense, direct and to the point. When I walked in, all those common chairs I mentioned were stacked upside down on the tables in the way that places do when they are closed. The taciturn fellow who worked there assured me they were indeed open, and explained they had just finish washing the floor. Please dont read any of this as negative-the best Chinese places I've ever been have looked like this-and if you've paid attention to the Travel/Food shows on the TeeVee, the joints in China itself are pretty much the same. On to the food, know this place is a Serious REAL-DEAL Chinese resto. I didn't notice if there were "Occidental" Chinese-type dishes on the carte, (primarily 'cos I wasn't looking for them). What I saw looked yum, and had a hard time making choices, even though I had read the menu multiple times and thought I know what I was going to order in advance. Confessionately, this is a chief feature for my tortured dining self-It's a wonder I even get fed in restaurants (especially the great ethnic ones), due to option anxiety. I zeroed in on "Street Noodles" for starters-wouldn't you? Then went to "Cold Beef Shank" for entreé. The Noodles were fab as was the Shank. The noodles were in a broth. with some hunks of bok choy and ground meat on top. Hearty, still light. The shank had a thin sauce complimenting but not obscuring the beefiness. One bugaboo: the Shank needed a bit of seasoning, and I wasn't going to use soy sauce, as I believed that would have marred the subtle flavors of the Beef. I asked for a salt shaker. It arrived, and I was a little taken back, 'cos it appeared it hadn't been washed in a while, and the salt inside was caked. It occurred to me this condition was present due to the non-use of said shaker. I don't think I've ever asked for a salt shaker in a Chinese resto. I pulled a toothpick out of my "Murse" and broke up the caked NaCl. Applying same to the pieces of Shank, the flavor bloomed and I was a happy boy. Bring some salt packets along when you visit "J's", maybe. The fellow who was waiter and cashier was a "western" fellow, whom I engaged and turned out to be quite an experienced foodie. some pleasant conversation indeed. We started with the triple delight pan fried dumplings and these were definitely a highlight. The bottoms had that perfect golden crisp while the tops stayed soft and chewy. Each one was juicy and flavorful, and you could tell they were made fresh. The chicken mini juicy buns were also really good. The wrappers were soft and delicate with a nice burst of broth inside, making them super comforting and easy to keep going back for. The pork belly gua bao was another standout. The bun was soft and fluffy, and the pork belly was tender and savory with a nice balance from the toppings. It was simple but really well executed. For noodles, we had the beef shank noodle soup with both beef shank and braised beef, and this dish was packed with protein. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the broth had a rich, savory depth that made it feel really hearty without being too heavy. We also tried the biang biang noodles.
