China Star is my quick last minute takeaway haunt. They're efficient and prepare food fresh right in front of you. I love the crispy noodle chow mein and general Tau's chicken, Orange chicken. They are all excellent. Full marks to the chief. As it is a take away, nothing much can be said for the two small tables, for persons to eat there, if they want to. Ermahgerd.... Who'd have thought the quest for decent Chinese would be so fraught with adversity? No, I'm not Chinese. But yes, I grew up eating Chinese-style takeout for the last six decades, and I know what I like. So far, I really haven't liked any of it! Today's luncheon special felt hefty and promising in the bag as I carried it to the car. And that's where the good news ended.... Tasteless egg roll, rice and bean sprouts swimming in brown oil masquerading as fried rice, and once again, tons of soggy veggies - even my despised mushrooms - hiding the ten chunks of tough fibrous meat that was listed on the menu as Mongolian Beef. Sadly, it wasn't even spicy "hot". I'm not giving up, however, even if, temptingly, there's a new drive-thru Panda Express opening right down the street. Someone, somewhere, has got to remember how to stir-fry tender, thin slices of beef with green onions, and still have a supplier for crispy glass noodles. Had the worst experience tonight, my family has been going for food at this place for 4 years and we never thought we would ever make a complaint about this place. We always get the dinner for 5 and we're pleased with the amount we get but tonight's portion was not at all equivalent to a 5 dinner meal. When we let the lady know that portion wasn't the same she just gave an attitude towards my family and walked away to the back leaving us talking to ourselves. I ordered carry out for my first time visit to China Star after receiving their menu in the mail. I was impressed with their menu because they offer dinner combination plates in the same way that most other Chinese restaurants offer the lunch combination plates. The restaurant was very, very clean. Floors immaculate. They have about 6 laminated booths and those were all very clean. It is an open kitchen so if you stand near the counter you can watch the chef prepare your food in the wok. After all of that, I was really looking forward to getting home and tasting the food. Unfortunately, my family and I did not really like the food. My son always orders chicken on a stick from Chinese restaurants. Neither of us liked the taste of the chicken. I ordered beef with broccoli and I didn't like the flavor of that dish either. I could tell the broccoli was old and it was cut in huge pieces. I ate the beef and threw the rest out. Usually I try and throw away these type of delivery menus before my husband gets his hands on them because I'm trying to avoid ordering in. Finding a good neighborhood Chinese spot is like finding a good doctor. We ordered Dinner for 2 for $22.95! Including tip & delivery/tax fees, I think it may have come out to $32-ish. We got so much food! Egg Drop Soup excellent, 2 egg rolls excellent, Crab Rangoon good (that's never been my thing but it comes with the meal), Chicken Fried Rice EXCELLENT & plentiful, Chicken Kow (plain chicken & water chestnuts & brocolli & snap or snow peas, and Kung Pao Beef extra spicy (my husband had asked for red chilli peppers but we're not included in his dish and was left disappointed). Everything was so salty. I like my food a little on the salty side but man this was extra extra extra salty!!! I was so parched after eating all this. Ordered the dinner for two. Got eggdrop soup, eggrolls, crab rangoon, fried rice, combo lo mein, and shrimp in lobster sauce more like black bean sauce. All salty except eggrolls and crab rangoon. Good deal for $26. Sometimes I'm guilty of writing the phrase "Well, I wanted to like it..." in my reviews, but come on. Let's just agree to banish that, because if you're spending your hard earned money somewhere, can we agree that you probably wanted to like it? Good, now that we got that out of the way.... I WANTED to like China Star. Really I did. But I um.. just didn't. Great in concept because it was one of the only places that would deliver to my work but the food wasn't as good as my go-to place back home. I had an order of pot stickers and the lunch special of General Tso's chicken (which includes fried rice and an eggroll.) Let's start with the fact that this food is ENORMOUS and will last me, minimally, three meals. I got my money's worth, that's for sure. Pot stickers- extremely huge, probably double the size that I'm used to. The pot stickers themselves were really good but I tasted an overwhelming amount of lemon. Not sure if that came from the dumplings themselves or from the dipping sauce, but it was too much. They also gave me an ungodly small amount of dipping sauce for the amount of potstickers they gave me. General Tso's- the lady on the phone warned me that it would be spicy. They always do, but it never seems spicy. Theirs actually does have a nice amount of kick to it. This was probably the best part of it. Fried rice- seemed bland even with soy sauce. Not sure why, but there wasn't enough flavor to it for my liking. Overall food wise, I think that the execution could have been a little bit better, but it wasn't horrible either. The best part of the meal was the chicken. The delivery driver and the woman on the phone were both really nice, so it made the $3.00 delivery fee extremely worth it. read more

I'm still in search for amazing take-out in the "VALley" (Villa Park, Addison, Lombard area) and I find China Star just OK. I do love the friendly and smiley service. The menu is pretty large but boasts the traditional Americanized Chinese fare--fried rice, chow meins, lo meins, sweet and sours and the like. There are some less mainstreamed fare like Szechuan green beans and salt and pepper shrimp. Some tofu dishes on the menu which is also a bonus. Take a pass on the Sesame chicken, it was pretty soggy and you can get much better from the fast food panda. I did like their BBQ Pork fried rice--not greasy and lots of bits of pork, I also liked their Shrimp Pan Fried Noodles--again, not greasy, lots of shrimp, noodles cooked well, great flavor. I wished there was more veggies but that's just personal choice. The Egg Rolls and Crab Rangoon were very good too, crispy and not overly greasy. I don't know what it is about living in the VAL-ley, but the Kung Pao Chicken is always mild, even when we ask for spicy. And here, even though I confirmed "spicy" it was still pretty mild. Good thing we always have Sriracha in the house. All in all, a great deal for huge amounts of food. There's a liquor store 2 doors down if you need something to do with your noodles. read more

You know how home-cooked meals don't have all the extra flavoring, additives and salt and sugar that a chain restaurant might throw in? It doesn't explode with flavor, but it gets the job done. China Star is a lot like that. Unless I've been to a place a few times, I usually just order a standard orange chicken. Theirs was ok, not as orange-y as other places I've had, and it was almost a little spongey. Better to soak up the sauce, I guess. On the plus side, the price is definitely right. They have a great "dinner for two" special for $15.95 that includes two choices from a limited menu, a pint cup of egg drop soup, two egg rolls, an order of crab rangoon and a very healthy portion of chicken-fried rice. I still have not found a favorite Chinese food place in the West Suburbs. China Star is my favorite place in Lombard. The prices are decent, there is enough food for leftovers, and the food is consistently decent. There is hardly ever a long wait, the people who work there understand me when I speak to them, and they are polite. The food isn't anything to write home about but it is good. read more

Yep, another night of studying requiring food on the go. The menu is pretty nice to look at, however, the food produced from the menu...that is a whole other story! The Orange Chicken tastes like it was made with Tang (for those that don't know, Tang is an artificial, disgustingly sweet attempt at orange juice), the General Tso's Chicken had more pieces of fried coating than it did pieces with actual chicken and my husband's gyoza (that was supposed to be fried) was raw. Nothing worse than biting into a raw dumpling. Our meal came with free crab rangoon and now I know why...having tasted them, there is no way I'd pay for them! Thank goodness the meal was relatively inexpensive or I'd be pretty upset. If you want decent take out Chinese food, I'd keep looking! I know I will be! read more

I ate there around four months ago, and the food made me sick..just a little stomach pain, and nausea...I'm guessing it is because of the greasy fat food(maybe the kitchen, i'm not sure how clean it is...). My husband decided to give it another try, so we ordered the special for two about 2 weeks ago. They gave us a SMALL rice(I keep wondering how do they expect TWO people to eat a small rice...whatever) 2 entrees(GREASY), 2 crab rangoon and 2 egg rolls. I really dont recommend it, unless you have NO WHERE else to go! So, we really like China Star. It's the only place in the area that has passed the test thus far. Granted, we've only tried three places... but this is the only one out of the three we'd consider going to again. So, they have that going for them. The pot stickers are just okay, but, they're edible and at this point that's all I'm asking for from a chinese take out place around Lombard. The China Star, it is what it is, a Chinese takeout spot next to a liqour store in a Strip mall, with that siad, the food is descent, it's not going to win any awards, but you get a nice portion for a decent price, the place looks clean. Honeslty I should give it a 5 star just cause it is as good as it gets around this area, when it comes to price, quality, and taste, But I can't cause well I go to China town every chance I get so, bottom line if you want some decent Chinese take out around lombard check this place out. read more

I thought the food was just okay, the egg rolls were so salty that I had to throw them away, it was like someone dropped a whole box of salt in them. Quick service and good food in this small strip mall carry out place. They ask you ow spicy you want the orange chicken which is a good thing. The strip mall is pretty dilapidated and this place it not going to rival anyplace in Chinatown but it does its job when you want something else besides the usual fast food corporate chains. read more

I love this place! People will cry because its next to a liquor store (technically its next to a pizza place), but that is irrelevant. This place is great, the atmosphere is not special but who cares. The food is always, always very hot and fresh. The chicken for sweet and sour chicken is always crispy and hot and they give you tons of rice. They also give you enough of their delicious sauce to keep for months.
