I just ordered from this place and I should've known better. Once they changed ownership it was never the same. I've never seen egg foo young so thin and burned and let's not forget the puddle of grease it's floating in. And the sesame chicken I'm not sure what it is. The pieces are so hard taste like it's old and they just threw sauce on it and some sesame seeds to make it look pretty. China Star is my go-to Chinese spot in the western burbs. I drive 20 minutes just to get to them. I am from the inner city, so if there's one thing we love, it's our Chinese food. This is the only place in the suburbs that reminds me of the city! My favorite dishes from China Star are: - Shrimp fried rice - Shrimp egg foo young - As many egg rolls as I can eat - Both fried and steamed potstickers/dumplings are delish - And steamed broccoli (because I always feel guilty about eating so much sodium). I've comparison-shopped. It's cheaper to buy their steamed broccoli for dinner than it is to buy a frozen bag from the supermarket!!! I love China Star and the friendly customer service - and it family owned! PRO-TIP: While they will accept Amex, they don't prefer it, due to the higher service fees. read more

This place is a hidden small gem! Tucked away off Roosevelt in Wheaton; one of the cheapest places in the area for chinese food (by about 10$!) was able to get a large Roast Pork Fried Rice, absolutely delicious. The pork was well seasoned and there was an abundance of it. Orange Chicken, not spicy even though there is a red chili on the menu next to it, came with white rice. Was also great, We also got steamed dumplings that comes with dipping sauce. All was 30$, including tax. We had enough for leftovers too. Definitley will be coming back here regularly! read more

To be fair, I am reviewing based on only a few menu items, but the orange chicken was not worth it. There was significantly too much fried dough with little amount of chicken. Ordered egg foo young, young chow fried rice, fried shrimp, shrimp toast and the spare ribs. Egg foo young tasted the same as the previous owners and I'm a fan of that dish so two thumbs up from me. I am so sorry to say that ever since it changed hands, it has gone downhill.The young guy at the front was very nice, that's the only good thing I have to say about this place. The woman who was cooking in the back, came running out when I picked up my order to tell me next time do it right! !!She also some other things that I'm not gonna comment on, the I ask the young man what is she talking about? and he said well you put 2 orders yes I did. I ordered two things the first time and then right after my son came home and asked me to order him something well it didn't allow me to add on to my order so I just ordered it , and it was just one thing.And that's what she was upset about people have bad days I understand but she was just rude and aggressive. This place is the best! The family that owns and runs it are the sweetest, kindest, most generous restauranteers I've encountered. The food they make fresh there is exceptionally delicious with full transparency as you can watch the father cook while the kids work the register and wife keeps it spotlessly clean. I'm not surprised to read that China Star is under different ownership because the food doesn't taste the same. The boneless spare ribs were full of fatty pieces and the lo mein noodles were dry. It's a shame because they had some of the best boneless spare ribs. To top it off, we only got a single tiny box of white rice, even though we got about $140+ worth of food. As of April 1 it was under new ownership. I'm just grieving the loss of the friendly mother who always greeted me. My favorite Won Ton soup no longer has the same flavor and the won tons are of the heavy dough type instead of the previous lighter one. The new order takers struggle to take the order which use to be easy. I haven't had to sample many dishes yet so I'm withholding judgment, but the lo mein wasn't great. We'll see. read more

The food here is great. The service I received over the phone is why we won't order from here again. I had a delivery for spicy shrimp fried rice and vegetable potstickers. When we received our food, the rice was not spicy. I called back and the lady, I'm assuming owner, manager, general lazy employee said to me, we will send the driver back, remake it and bring it back to you. I told her this is a two hour process. Why wouldn't you just send a new one and we can give you the wrong order back. She then asked, you don't have hot sauce at home? Just add it. If I wanted to cook a meal I would have done so. You gotta love a Chinese joint where you're called "my friend." You are greeted with "What can I get for you, my friend?" and when leaving you hear "thank you my friend, have a nice day." China Star, you are indeed my friend. Especially when I'm hungover.I don't know what it is about Chinese food, but it is my instant hangover cure. Seriously. I've eaten everything under the sun sworn to "cure" a hangover to no avail. Enter China Star. All I need is an order of their chicken fried rice and an hour later, I'm golden. But, I do love this place no matter how I'm feeling. This isn't a fancy sit-down-and-eat place. They do have a few tables but one of them seems to serve as a "desk" for the owners' young children, who are adorable by the way. Sometimes they will even assist customers, grabbing a can of pop or extra sauces. Speaking of which, if you love fiery flavor, ask them for a side of the hot pepper oil. Seriously. That stuff is incredible, and a little bit goes a long way. One of my favorite dishes here is the Pepper Tomato Chicken (or maybe it's Tomato Pepper Chicken- I tend to be dyslexic at times). It's exactly like Beef Pepper Steak at most Chinese joints, only with chicken. As Dan B. mentioned, the steamed dumplings are quite fantastic. The sauce served with them really brings out the flavor of the meat inside. Another favorite are the fried scallops (I'm not sure if they still have them or not- I didn't order any on my last visit). They also have a few sushi items on their menu, however I haven't given those a try and most likely won't, as I'm particular about my sushi. The best part about China Star is the food portions are enormous, and it's cheap. They will charge you a small fee though if you use a credit/debit card for purchases under $10, or thereabouts. I no longer live in the immediate area, so I don't get to enjoy China Star as much as I'd like. I've tried multiple Chinese food restaurants in the area, and nothing compares to China Star. This is our go to carry out. I rate it five stars not because it is the best food, but it is very good, cheap and quick. I don't know why bad reviews but we love the Hunan chicken. Nice white meat chicken loaded with vegetables. Pot stickers and egg rolls are also pretty good. I don't mind children who help out there. The owners of this restaurant are so, so friendly, and there are always a few adorable children hanging out watching tv, doing homework, and (once) riding a tricycle around the waiting area. They do have a couple of tables, but it's primarily a takeout place. My two qualms: I've noticed that their shrimp is not usually clean (you know what I'm talking about here, right?), so I've stopped ordering it. Also, with some of the breaded and fried chicken dishes like sesame or general's, there is too much crusty breading and not enough meat. However, the chicken in the sweet and sour chicken always seems fresh and delicious, so I'm not sure what's up with that. I don't know enough about the preparation to know if these dishes call for different types of chicken. Their fried rice is great, especially veggie. My son loves their bean curd (tofu) and veggies, and we like their noddles a lot too. Potstickers are decent, crab rangoon is okay but not the best. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable. Whoever answers the phone can always understand me on the first try, a nice bonus. We go there a lot and they often throw a free soda or egg role into our bag. Hello, I am new to Wheaton and decided to start trying new Chinese places in the area. China Star seems to have good reviews, but I was extremely disappointed with my experience last night 7/22/18. First I walked in to pick it up and there is young children running around the front area. Computers and other misc stuff on the tables and overall looks very junky. The young girl made fun of my shirt as I walked in. Starting it off not on good foot. Also they have the young kids handle your debit card / payment. I did not feel comfortable with a 7 year old handling the transaction. The food was no better, very dry rice and orange chicken soaking in sauce like where is the chicken ? If you want young kids taking your order and handling your money, go to China Star. I will not be returning. read more

When I made the order I specifically asked what was in it. Said two items needed to be with held due to allergy. It was repeated on the phone AND at pick up. Get home, and freaking allergen in the food so I call in. She said "that's how we make it", I said okay, but I am allergic and I said that upon ordering and it was confirmed.
