First time going to Lumpy's and I was not disappointed best ice cream and very polite employees. The restaurant gives old school ice cream shop vibes I love it!

I can't believe I've never been to Lumpy's! I've had their ice cream at events around town but here they are, only a few miles from other businesses I frequent. I love ice cream and there are definitely many choices at the grocery store, but there is something special about going to an ice cream shop. Does it enhance the flavor? Maybe not, but smell has been known to (science) and Lumpy's smells of waffle cones and vanilla deliciousness. I've gotten away from visiting local and this Lumpy's visit was part of my efforts to improve. On this Sunday around 2pm it was pretty empty which allowed me to feel comfortable asking to sample a couple flavors before committing (which is welcomed anyway). I sampled Anna's Anise, which was so unique and refreshing but I couldn't see eating a cup of it. My husband sampled Montezumas Revenge, a very spicy chocolate. The nice young man serving us did ask him first if he's ok with spice - he was warned. Even my husband who will dump an entire spice tray on his Thai food said it was legitimately spicy! So again, a very intriguing flavor but not up to an entire cup of it. I ended up with hazelnut coffee which was fantastic and he got Apple Pie, also very tasty. The creamy, icy balance stayed perfect throughout. There were so many choices, and from what I understand, they use local, natural ingredients. I will be back to try more of the regular offerings along with seasonal flavors. The inside of the shop is simple, not trendy or themed, just lots of nods to the Lumpy's brand and the Wake Forest area. You can feel the love here. There is a small parking lot and it's also walkable from White Street.

Service was amazing! Ice cream toppings were delightful. Ice cream had a nice texture, but I couldn't taste the buttery sweetness of the butterscotch flavor, even when tasted without the toppings. .5 stars for the ice cream for the service

We went here one afternoon after leaving the park with a friend. We loved it! Everyone Inside is friendly. We got two kiddie cups and a single scoop ice cream cone. I love the outside area to eat. We got the chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. Everything g is homemade. They have taste testing available too! My friend got the maple bacon one and she loved hers! Definitely try this place out if you're wanting some ice cream in downtown!!

I think the one star reviewers of this ice cream parlor, have broken taste buds. This is the most flavorful ice cream I have ever had! You get to sample them before you buy, also. We sampled multiple flavors and they all had wonderful tastes! Rocky road with my go to. I added hot fudge on top to add extra chocolate! Highly recommend, while enjoying downtown Wake Forest. We have lived here for over two years, this was our first time, and we will be back. 100%!! Also the staff is suuuper friendly! They laugh and joke around with you and enough serving you!

If you're up for a delicious array of unique of unique homemade flavors, mixed in house, then Lumpy's is your spot. Locally owned and socially conscious, Lumpy's is always engaged in the community. In this case, a contest was held for local girl scouts to suggest a sundae combination. This week's winner is our friend and neighbor Maddie. Maddie's Troop 525 is outside selling cookies, and Lumpy's is serving up Maddie's Angel Delites Sundae inside. Plus Lumpy's is donating a portion of proceeds to the troop! Cool, right? The sundae features a big scoop of apple pie ice cream, surrounded by 3 caramel delites, topped with caramel-apple sauce and whipped cream and sprinkled with toasted coconut. WOW! Creamy vanilla & apple flavored ice cream with chunks of baked apple. My favorite caramel delites (aka Samoas). Fresh whipped cream and crunchy sweet coconut. This is a great sundae - if you close your eyes, you'd swear you are eating a slice of apple pie ala mode. Plenty of other flavors in the case to try, and the selection rotates weekly. Lumpy's is a great choice for that ice cream craving. Go for it!

The owner and workers are very customer service oriented. Everyone was personable and quick to give samples. The store has about a dozen flavors at a time. I thought the small scoop in a cup (pictured) was more like a kids size scoop, but the quality of the ice cream was good. My niece who got a kids scoop in a cone ended up with more ice cream volume. The building could use overall upgrading, but I did really enjoy the picnic table area outside.

I too wanted to like and support Lumpy's but after paying $4 from their food truck for a small cup, it's just not going to happen. Kenny's kickin chocolate was a flavor disappointment, I'm kickin myself for paying $4 for a small cup of just ok ice cream. I'm all for healthy ingredients and no preservatives but the ice cream has to taste good. Sorry Lumpy's you did not make me a fan.

Did a random search to find something sweet to eat and this place came up. We are not from the area so tried to find places to try. Walked into this small little ice cream shop. Staff acknowledged us and welcomed us in. I saw a sign on door for fig cake ice cream sundae and my boyfriend ordered a banana split. Fig sundae was (Told HOMEMADE) fig cake with caramel sauce topped with ice cream scoop, I only vanilla for these types of things and came with whipped cream. Can I just say the cake was hot or heated already and had an amazing warm seasonings in it and a slightly crispy bottom and that vanilla ice cream added the perfect topping to that. I will say that was the BEST cake I have ever eaten and I didn't even know if I liked fig!! (Loved it so much went back the next day and ordered 2 of them) His banana split he got chocolate, vanilla and they were out of strawberry so he got cherry with hot fudge and nuts and whipped cream on top!! This place is definitely a must try even with a short drive! Top tier. They also mentioned they make their own ice cream too!! Have a variety of different flavors!!! read more

I stopped in with my daughter and four grandkids only three old enough to eat any ice cream, mine butter pecan, daughter's pineapple both very good. The three little ones had lemon which was outstanding, strawberry (amazing), and licorice chocolate chip which I did not sample, I do not like licorice, but my oldest grandson did who's 5. They have some very unique flavors. Sorry I didn't take any pictures. read more

I wish I could do more stars!! I had Lumpy's many years ago and was the best homemade ice cream I ever had. Still today they continue to hold the title. Staff is really nice! There was a car in the handicap and I have a disability that affects my walking. The owner(I kind of remember that mustache) came and helped me in. Store nice and clean. Store all alone with plenty of parking. Very visible . Make sure you go or book it. You won't regret it!! read more

My wife and I have 5 kids and we were going out for ice cream on Father's Day. When we walked in my son was looking in the freezer and asked if they had anything with cherry. The owner said, "do you see anything in there with cherry?" My son said "ummm no." Then he said, "then no." He was asking because many of the flavors have creative names like Wired Hippie. Who knows what that is anyway? After we got our ice cream we were less than impressed with the product. The kids were all complaining about what they got so we ended up going to Dairy Depot right after. read more

Anytime I am in Wake Forest and want ice cream, this is my hidden gem. Lumpys will have you say Baskin Robbins who? Or any other store brand you can get from the grocery store I can't compare it to Goodberrys because they sell custard but I'd say Lumpys is the MVP of their ice cream competition. It's the authentic flavoring for me, it's the omg this doesn't have artificial ingredients! They will cater business events, birthdays, you can buy small quantities or large. read more

We've tried Lumpy's twice. One at their food truck and once at their store. Both times had different flavors. Both times ZERO taste. The gentleman with the mustache was at the food truck. GREAT customer service. But at the store it was some young kids that seemed annoyed they had a customer. I asked for hot fudge that tasted like burnt, grainy chocolate sauce. As much as I'd like to support a small business, I'd rather go to a chain restaurant for better taste and service. read more

I love trying new ice cream in the triangle and I was not a fan of Lumpy's. I had a chance to try it during the July 4th festival that took place in downtown Raleigh. It was $5 for a small scoop of freezer burnt ice cream. When I use the words "freezer burnt", I'm referring to ice cream that taste like lumps of ice. I had the blue berry and it tasted like vanilla ice cream mashed with small blueberries. I would like to stop by the shop to give it another try but I'll pass on Lumpy's ice cream truck for now. First time here tonight. I absolutely loved this ice cream shop. I wanted to go safe with a hot fudge sundae. The ice cream was absolutely delicious. I liked that it was not super sweet. Everything in this place is homemade including the hot fudge. Owner was super nice. He came over to see how we enjoyed our ice cream. Definitely will be back! read more

Lumpys ice cream is a favorite for Wake Forest locals. Their unique flavors are always fun to try out, their staff are always friendly, and they have late hours ideal for an evening visit after a ball game at flaherty fields. Highly recommend. read more

History

Established in 2001.

Founded by Buck Buchanan, Lumpy's Ice Cream has been growing organically since its humble beginnings in 2001. The commitment to offer a healthy treat came from Buck's personal experience. With a background in fine dining, Buck moved from Vermont to Raleigh, North Carolina, and was looking for an opportunity. One fine day to treat his kids, he made some ice cream from locally-sourced hormone-free milk and fresh fruits, and without any additives or food color. Watching the pure joy it bought to his kids, he encountered an 'Aha!' moment and decided to take this further. Shortly, Lumpy's Ice Cream was formed, production moved to a shed behind of his house, and Buck remained the company's only employee for several more months serving only at concerts and fairs. Word about Lumpy's Ice Cream spread and soon reached NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Through their Goodness Grows In NC program, the business got immense support and soon expanded its production and employees.

Buck, a trained chef, began Lumpy's after being disappointed at the lack of all natural and wholesome ice cream to give his two kids. While building this small yet adored brand, we have remained committed to sourcing our ingredients locally. We truly believe that natural products are better for your body and for the environment. I honestly don't know how you manage to do that with pork belly. Really disappointing experience overall.
