This review is more of an expression of gratitude for the exceptional care that Dr. Fleming and her staff have provided me since meeting them less than a year ago. To refer to Dr. Fleming, Jentry, and Julie as just my "optometrist's office" would be an understatement; they are amazing human beings, and Dr. Fleming is one of the best doctors I have ever encountered. When I was referred to Dr. Fleming during an eye emergency, she took me in the same day and performed a thorough exam to determine the issue. Thanks to her prescribed treatment, I felt relief almost instantly. I truly appreciate how she communicated with me throughout my recovery to ensure I was healing properly. Because she is so detailed and invested in her patients' well-being, she was able to discover other contributing factors to my eye health. She immediately became my primary optometrist, and I have since brought my family to her practice as well. I also want to highlight her staff, Jentry and Julie. They are incredibly kind, and their organization and communication skills are outstanding. The ability to reach the office via text or phone with immediate responses is the best! Furthermore, the online portal is user-friendly and makes completing forms seamless. I always feel welcomed in the office. Oh!! And the selection of eyewear is exquisite. So many niche brands that you just want to buy them all! And, because of her expertise in skin care and services provided in-office? Not only are my eyes better, but so is my skin!! I have been struggling with dry eyes for years. Dr. Flemming diagnosed that I have ocular rosacea. No other optometrist or opthamologist had identified this condition. She also has treatments that no one else had offered. After the initial period of regular treatments, I experienced relief. Now, I have treatments every 6 months and I no longer have dry eye issues. Dr. Flemming and everyone in the office are always helpful. When I almost gave up on treatments (it does take a number of treatments) she would encourage me that the program will help. I found Luminance on YELP. I trusted the majority of the reviews and was excited to learn that they accepted VSP. Dr. Fleming is a dry eye specialist. I suffer from uncomfortable dry eyes. My first impression of the staff: lazy, unhelpful. I agree with another yelper that they refused to adjust my glasses. They forewarned me that they're not liable for any damages (most optometrist offices do this). I love convenience, I came back after a few months to have my eyes examined again and that's when Dr. Fleming introduced me to radio frequency treatment. The amount of time she or her staff spent explaining it led me to believe I could just book 1 session. The day of my appointment I learned they were trying to charge me for 4 - this was never discussed or explained. They also added charged for skincare items I didn't want or request. I requested the items be removed as I do not need them. I have since completed 3 treatments and experienced 0 relief from my dry eyes. Not to mention this treatment is not covered by your insurance. It's $500 a session! This small business is very sales driven. Unless they're making money off of you at that very moment, you do not have the undivided attention of the doctor or the staff. I've left messages for the optometrist and a week will go by with 0 follow up. Client retention, service, genuine concern for you health, you will find none of this at Luminance. 3 stars because this place is good for those who are materialistic and interested in overpriced eyewear or anti aging solutions. Dr. Fleming seems like a very nice person, but some of us are looking for great health care rather than skin care technology the Kardashians are using. read more

I made an appointment for an eye exam using VSP and no one mentioned a $98 charge for checking for eye health until I got there. That is apparently required for them to do a vision exam and they won't check eyesight without that. What a scam! read more

As an existing patient, made an appointment for my annual exam. When I arrived at the time of my exam they doors were closed, after a few minutes they opened the store. When I was in the office they informed me that the total was going to be around $700 for my exam, a contact lens exam, and "pictures". This seemed high - I checked others and was shocked at how hight it actually was. Went to Site for Sore Eyes in Walnut Creek as a new patient and they charged me under $200 for eye exam, nothing extra for contact exam, and no "picture fee". read more

You were willing to do it, but you wanted to charge me, which (as I said) I think lacks the kind of service I would expect, given I am already a customer that has spent thousands there on other glasses and exams, even if it's not THESE glasses. It's just not great service considering that. It would have taken you 10 min to do this minor adjustment and maybe it's petty, but you lost a customer - as I said I already wasn't happy with being charged for other small things as well as being told I needed things that insurance didn't cover. That's fine! - but tell me it's not covered and it's a recommendation. We already talked and you let me know you didn't agree with me and think you should charge me for your time which is completely fine. Just letting others know in case that is something they would expect too. Original post: I really liked the selection of glasses here so I had my eyes tested here, and my whole family's. She tells me I need something removed in my eye, I need a $30 eye wash, another type of wipe, an eye mask - just loads me up on stuff. None of it is covered by insurance, she doesn't tell me this, but I still buy it all because I'm told I need it. My also husband bought 4 pairs of $600 glasses over the last few years. I stop in today to have my glasses adjusted, And the owner tells me she is going to charge me for it. I told her I was a customer already, and that didn't matter to her. So I left.. This was the last straw. I've never been charged for this anywhere else, and I certainly do not want to pay just to have the arms of my glasses bent - something that takes a few minutes to do, especially when I have all ready spent so much money there?! This should be a courtesy for existing clients. I called after I left to explain why I was upset and to have her remove us from reminders. I was shocked that she was defensive and argumentative about it, and said she was charging for her time, and she didn't sell me anything I didn't need. She really didn't even listen to me. read more

Perhaps if I ordered my glasses with them, they would give me a better customer service. But as a patient, I have no obligation to get glasses from the optical where I had my eyes checked. Quite the fabulous experience- which is odd for being an optometrist! Dr. Fleming really works with you and knows what it is like to be a working woman. The office itself is beautiful, neat and clean. The best part was they have a wonderful selection of unique European frames. They take so much time to help you find the right pair, for me it was a very retro Andy Wolf pair - I mean who in the US stocks Andy Wolf! Amazing. I've been to many optometry places over the years, and this is the first place that has impressed me from start to finish. The eye exam was the most thorough exam I've ever had. Not only did Dr. Fleming get my updated prescription, she went into great detail about my eye health and explained all the findings very clearly. After the exam, it was time to pick out some new frames. They have a nice selection of high quality, stylish frames. Melonie was extremely helpful and honest about all the frames I've tried. She helped me pick out the final frames and I'm loving them. When I came back in to pickup my glasses, she took great care in adjusting the frames so that they were comfortable. I had to go back in a few weeks later to get an adjustment because I had bumped my glasses, and she fixed it right up. Dr. Fleming and Melonie are great at what they do, super friendly, patient, and professional. My 2 year old daughter also loves this place. Prior to my appointment with Luminance Vision Optometry, I had been a patient at another optometry group for the past 14 years. I had been contemplating a change for the last year because I felt my current optometrist was not investing in any new or current technology & I was ready for a change. I was able to send a text to set up my appointment which I found extremely timely & efficient. Upon entering the tastefully designed office space, I was greeted by one of their friendly staff members. Due to Covid, I was screened and asked to take my temperature as well as wash my hands. I was led into a room with 3 high tech machines that scanned my eyes for eye diseases. After these tests were completed, I met Dr. Fleming who's very personable and performed a detailed eye exam using traditional eye tests with updated and not old, clunky machines. She was extremely knowledgeable & kind and spent a fair amount of time reviewing my results and addressing my concerns. Dr. Fleming was very patient in explaining dry eye disease, computer eyestrain and glaucoma. I felt comfortable & understood what she was explaining. And I'm excited to learn she uses IPL to treat and prevent dry eyes. When it was time to pick out my new frames, the optician selected the perfect pair of glasses that worked best for my face. There were so many great choices. I'm looking forward to my computer glasses with blue light filter and my stylish sunglasses. This appointment was such a fun experience for me. Just got back from my eye exam with Dr. Fleming and I have to say that this was the most thorough eye exam I've ever had. Not only that, but Dr. Fleming identified several issues that other Optometrists have overlooked. I've seen a lot of so-so Optometrists before, but after seeing Dr. Fleming all those so-sos are now no-nos. Everything about my visit was perfect - Dr. Fleming was thorough and funny and explained everything in detail so that I left knowing a lot more about my eyes and eye health. A LOT more. Her equipment is state-of-the art and she patiently walked me through the results (and there were a lot of results). I ended up needing two pairs of glasses (I brought one that I bought online) and found another pair that I love but would never have chosen on my own. In the age of mass-produced goods and drive-thru culture, finding an optometry shop that features high quailty and hand crafted frames is a real treat. I was looking to find frames that weren't just standard fare, I wanted something that was well designed and reflected my personality. There are plenty of mass produced frames available these days, but there's something to be said for well crafted items that you know will last a long time and keep you looking good. When you arrive at Luminance you will be greeted warmly and offered something to drink on a hot or a cold day. I didn't have an eye exam this time because I went to a different optometrist before luckily finding Luminance. That said, I know that Dr. Fleming is an excellent doctor and working with Dr. Fleming and Melonie, I was able to try on multiple frames, finding two pairs of frames that I loved. Very impressed with Dr. Fleming and her optician Irene. They took great care of me and my daughter. Very knowledgeable and did a nice job explaining things to us. Also they have a tremendous selection of frames and excellent service. My previous eye doctor would just hand me a receipt and tell me to contact my insurance company. Irene actually printed out the claim form from my insurance company for me with the instructions I needed to get reimbursed. She made it easy. I got glasses here last year & it was much easier & pleasant than I anticipated. The machines were fun & didn't cause me any discomfort at all. It was amazing to see the inside of my eyes. I hesitated to write this until now, as I thought maybe my eyes had deteriorated to a point where glasses could no longer bring me 20/20 vision, however after one hour with Dr. Frank Zheng at Lafayette Optometric Group, I and seeing 20/20 again..something Dr. Mei Fleming was not able to do, somehow. Here's the story: I had worn out my old glasses after 7 years in the same lenses and frames. Mei was new in town and seemed nice and knowledgeable, so I chose her and almost immediately things went wrong. My appointment started with the technician entering my prescription wrong in the electronic medical records, and Mei's first attempt at measuring my vision failed as she started too far from my prescription to hone it in. Over time, the 1 or 2 and 2 or 3 method brought the eye chart into better view, but it never was fully clear as it had been with all of my previous optometrists. I mentioned this to Mei, but she settled for the best she could do. Needless to say, the prescription was off, and she added prism to both lenses to help my eyes accommodate even though only my left eye needed help, and after two weeks of trying to adjust to the lenses I could not read license plates in front of me and the prism was making me nauseous. I asked to come in and have the lenses checked and was met by surliness from the front office staff that I hadn't given it enough time, "my eyes need to accommodate"...really after a week and then two weeks? (As an aside, my wife also saw Mei and commented before all of this that she also found the front office staff to be condescending) I finally asked to have the prism removed from the prescription and learned that I had also been prescribed progressive lenses. When I asked why, Mei disagreed with me when I said I could read fine with my old glasses. She said, "No you can't, you need to take them off". After I told her that was wrong, she replied, "Yes you do." Alas, we determined that she had me confused with another patient. We ordered new lenses and when they arrived, I still couldn't read license plates on the cars in front of me. I asked her if I could come in and recheck my prescription and she invited me in. We spent about 5 minutes trying to fine tune my vision by rotating the astigmatism (but never looking at the power she had prescribed) and determined that "in her professional opinion, my vision was the best it was going to get." I could see better with my contact lenses and old glasses than I could with these brand new lenses and expensive frames. I waited for the new year to arrive so my insurance would renew, visited Dr. Frank Zheng, had a wonderful conversation with him and was thrilled when the eye charts were in perfect focus and my new glasses from Dr. Zheng's office have me seeing 20/15. There are better options in Lamorinda than Luminance. read more

As I progress to needing bifocals, Mei has done a great job with prescribing contacts that allow me to see my best for whether I'm reading or driving. read more

I found Luminance Vision Optometry on instagram! Dr. Fleming and her assistant were so great! I was able to email the office and schedule a Saturday morning exam for my 21 year old daughter. We were impressed from the instant we arrived. Everything is new and beautiful, equipment, lobby, selection of glasses- Dr. Fleming explained each process and worked with my daughter to find the perfect adjustment for her contact lens prescription. My daughter chose new frames with the help of Dr. Fleming and her student assistant (so lovely!). The process was fun, welcoming, easy and we left SO PLEASED with our experience and glasses and contacts! Cannot recommend a better experience in optometry. Accepts VSP with no hassle. I went through an eye exam w/ Dr. Fleming and must say it was the most comprehensive exam I've ever received. And I really liked being able to see the results for myself and the exam progressed. Dr. Mei Fleming is the BEST eye doctor I have ever had. Hands down. She has been my optometrist for the last 14 years. I started seeing her at her other practice in Alamo. I'm so happy she opened this practice in Lafayette. First let me explain, I am very nearsighted. My eyes are really bad. And Dr. Fleming is always thorough with my eye exams and accurate with my prescriptions. Choosing the right glasses that look good on me without looking like I'm wearing "coke-bottles" has always been a challenge.
