In my experience, having almost 40 years of being monitored for genetically & age-related macular degeneration and changes in vision, eg. cataracts, floaters, dry eye, astigmatism, etc., Dr. Ensor is among a very few vision care professionals, who can provide the highest level of general & senior vision health care in the Bay Area. Several years ago I located his practice after retirement, when I no longer had VSP coverage, and my vision care provider at the time, a major UC affiliated clinical practice, which was current with Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) refused senior medicare insurance. Dr. Ensor is among a very small number in the bay area, who is well versed and equipped in monitoring and in available treatment options for AMD, being on call 24/7 for emergencies in vision changes, and his office accepts medicare and other related senior insurance plans. But, more importantly he and his entire staff are sincere, empathic, and provide the highest level of patient-based care. My wife is now one of his new patients. Dr. Jeremy Ensor is the best! My daughter and I have been going to him for years and I highly recommend him and his office! He is so kind and makes sure you are comfortable and doesn't make you feel like you're giving a "wrong answer" during the eye exam. He also doesn't have the "poof" machine where the air blows in your eye!!!! He uses an updated test that is even more accurate than that torture test haha!!! He also doesn't have to dilate your eyes because he has a new and updated way to do the same thing without dilating your eyes! So you can go about your day after your exam without wearing those sexy thick blacked out glasses or the slide in screen things lol. Dr Ensor is professional, but super warm and friendly. I'm kind of a nerd who's interested in what the back of my eyes looks like, and man I was in heaven with Dr Ensor explaining every last thing about how my eyes work. (I think he doesn't do this with everyone, just because I asked him a ton of questions.) He just went above and beyond even though his office is closed due to the coronavirus shelter in place order - he's working from home and immediately responded via text to my voicemail message today, to send me a piece that fell off my glasses and also email me my prescription. Two reasons while I will not come back to this optometrist: 1) When you book a regular eye exam, they instead perform a full retinal screening with larger copay. This is not mentioned to you when you book the appointment or during the appointment. It is only mentioned vaguely in a 2 pager automated email. There is no option to opt-out. It would be more transparent to disclose this upon arrival to the office or before the exam. 2) The optometric assistant called me "my friend" and is not very professional. She also does not reply to emails when you post a complaint. read more

I felt like I knew him since second grade :) This optometry practice has been in Lafayette for 30 years and Dr. Ensor is a great new addition to this office. I was very happy with my last Optometrist who sadly closed up shop. I looked in my Vision plan for an optometrist close by who was suitable for the whole family. Rather than call, I sent an email. Laura responded to my email quickly and provided a great deal of detail on information I needed to know in order to make an appointment for me and my two children. I was impressed with the friendly, helpful and professional tone of her correspondence. I arrived my my appointment and Laura was just as friendly, helpful and professional in person. I met Dr. Ensor - and he was also friendly, helpful and professional. The appointment was thorough, informative and pleasant. Dr. Ensor went over various options for contact lenses and made suggestions. I opted to try one of his suggestions and hee gave me some trial lenses. I arrived a few days later with my 7 and 8 year old. Laura greeted us and made my children feel comfortable. Dr. Ensor treated my children in an age appropriate manner - he was friendly and put my children at ease. The exam was informative and thorough. I had an unexpected need to travel out of town and did not have my prescription finalized or have enough contact lenses - I emailed Laura and she took care of everything. I really can't say enough of about Dr. Ensor and Laura - what a team! I am happy to have found them and thrilled that we now have a reliable, knowledgeable, friendly, professional eye care team for years to come. I highly recommend Dr. Ensor. read more

This review is for Jeremy Ensor's staff, NOT himself as an optometrist. As an optometrist, I find him calm and knowledgable. He worked relatively well with my 5yo son (age at the time). The office staff and office manager (Solana) specifically are unresponsive and defensive. I also believe better procedures should be put in place to help the staff not "drop the ball". Here are my specific examples but not in the order of priority. 1. They lack followup communication. I ordered a replacement pair of frames (lenses are fine and just need to be swapped out) on 5/4. I was told the frames would arrive on 5/10 and to come in to swap the lenses. 5/10 arrived with silence. I called and office responds with, "We don't have them yet but we will call you back in 20 minutes". I don't receive a call back in 20 minutes but instead receive a call back 24 hrs later. Of course, the news is that they don't know where the glasses are or when they will come. TBH, I'm questioning if the glasses were even ordered. On top of that, the office manager explains that the reason for the delay in shipment is because there is an inexplicable "HOLD" on the frames that only the optometrist can resolve. So from 5/10 (when the hold was discovered) to 5/12 (2.5 full working days) the office manager and optometrist never spoke about the hold to resolve it? It seems to be a failure in communication FROM the office manager to the optometrist. 2. They don't answer calls. I won't fault 100% them for this due to it being a small office and understand that times can be busy. 3. They mainly text. On a usual case, I prefer this method of communication. However, when texting with someone who has not read the case history of the patient, the text communications can be confusing. I requested multiple times to speak to someone in person, only to be ignored. 4. Difficult to communicate more complex requests (other than just prescription refills or scheduling). 4A. Example 1: For this recent example, I just needed replacement frames for my son ASAP due to an upcoming eye surgery (he is required to wear his glasses every day until the surgery). His prescription lenses are fine, just the frame arm broke. By 5/12, I have expressed my frustrations (frames were requested on 5/4) and the office manager is attempting to find solutions (I do appreciate that BTW so want to thank her for trying, albeit late) to get me frames ASAP. However, one of her suggestions was that I just come into the office to purchase new frames and can get the new frames immediately from what is in stock. At this point, it's clear she doesn't understand the problem. I can't just pick any frame because the existing lenses won't fit those new frames. It must be the same frames unless I want to purchase new lenses as well which will take another couple of weeks to manufacture. It's frustrating to have conversations with the same person for a week and have them not grasp what the actual issue is. B. Example 2: I had a prescription from 2019 that I like (I have a pair of glasses with that prescription and I like the vision from it). My prescription changed in 2020 for the worse but only slightly (difference of 0.25). I wanted to use my 2021 VSP money to get a new pair of glasses with the same prescription as 2019 ("heavy" prescriptions tend to give me headaches which is why I don't want the 2020 prescription). That seemed to be too much of an ask that was never understood. After several calls, I just gave up and decided not to get the glasses altogether. In this case, my suggestion would have been to have the staff communicate to the optometrist if she did not understand the request. 5. They were unprofessional and defensive. You can tell that I'm frustrated but I will never use inappropriate language. After numerous conversations with the same person, I suggested that I speak to someone else because "even though we are both speaking English, we are not really understanding each other". Her response was "I am speaking English. I'm not dumb, or stupid" and proceeded to chastise me. I always encourage folks to stand up for themselves but at the same time, all I'm trying to convey is that we are speaking like two ships passing in the night. I'm not sure why I'm not allowed to speak with an optometrist who understands my son's case and can possibly communicate with me more effectively. Office managers should be able to handle requests to speak to others without being offended. Fortunately, we have another optometrist office in Walnut Creek that we have also been speaking to regarding my son's case and they're able to get him a pair of new glasses (new frames and lenses) in a timely manner. read more

I have been a long time patient. Last year I had a bad experience in getting my contacts. At the proper prescription. Dr Ensor kept giving multiple pairs of lens to try which became impossible to figure out which ones really worked I was going to change but got a reminder last week of my annual exam and thought I'd give it one more chance. My appoint was for 10 am today. Last night st 7:48 I received a text from his office telling me there was a problem with my insurance. I arrived this am brought the new insurance card as they had requested and was basically refused service. If they had reached out to me yesterday I could have had the situation fixed. The treatment was unprofessional and embarrassing. I have coverage but there was a problem with the eligibility feed to VSP which I was able to get resolved and will show tomorrow. This is not my first issue of inept office/ practice management. Having worked in healthcare for years, I tend to spend quite a bit of time researching my options for a new provider. I chose Dr. Ensor after having poured over reviews from multiple online sources. He lives us to his 5-star rating! An hour of time with the doctor (in any field) is basically unheard of but I never felt rushed throughout any of my appointment. I was considering switching from inconsistently worn glasses to contacts but was wary of making the jump. He explained my options in detail and was patient with my many questions. Dr. Ensor has potential, new contact wearers "practice" for a week before making a decision. Best thing I could have done b/c I decided contacts weren't for me, just yet. In the end, he even helped me pick out new frames by explaining what the different styles and looks say about you to others. I ended up going with the frames he recommended (which I wouldn't have picked on my own) and I get compliments frequently. I wear glass bottle bottom lenses. Seriously, my lenses are pretty crazy thick. For that reason, I am very diligent about seeing my optometrist. I was lucky to have Dr. Ensor as my optometrist when I moved up to this area and he's been my optometrist ever since. Such a lovely bedside manner. It's like talking to a friend about my eyes. I'll always laugh when he seemed nervous to tell me about my upcoming Big 4-0 bday and how my eye sight would start to change. Great doctor, great staff, great selection of glasses frames, not-so-great selection of sunglass frames. The Pros: Dr. Ensor First the great stuff: Doctor Ensor is as good as the reviews indicate. He spends a lot of time with you and explains what he's doing at every step and why he's asking every question. He conducts all of the exam stuff himself: no technician doing the pre-tests like the puff test. He did something else instead of the puff test, but some of the other tests that I've had at other offices weren't done (like the test where a little squiggle moves around to see if you have any blind spots). He asks lots of questions, and talks to you about your eyes and any problems, taking a very thorough history, so maybe he does those as needed. The Staff: I dealt with Pat who helped me look for frames. She's great at her job. We looked at about 40 frames, and I ended up picking the first pair she had me try on. She really explains why each pair works or doesn't with the shape of your face and coloring. I've purchased about 15 frames in last 15 years and I've never heard some of the information she provided. She was great! She made it clear that she doesn't work on commission and I never felt pressured or corralled. The Cons: Ok, so there have to be some downsides, or I would have followed the herd and given 5 stars. Here are the issues I think you might have if you decide to go to this office: Sunglass Frame Selection: The selection of reading/clear glasses frames is great. There are tons of very diverse frames, and I think anyone can find something they'll love. However, there were only about 25 sunglasses frames on display when I was there. They were cute and seemed like a good representative sample, but still, I'd have preferred a bigger selection if I was looking for sunglasses this year. Small Office: The office isn't huge, and I think Dr. Ensor and Pat are the only ones there. They take a lot of time with patients which is great, unless you're coming to pick up your new frames and you have to wait for them to finish up, or if they get bombarded with phone calls. Not a huge issue, but something to consider if you're in a hurry. Parking: Like most places in Downtown Lafayette, parking is an issue. There are a couple of parking spots outside the office (literally: I think there are only about 2 dedicated spots), and the rest are all reserved for the other offices in the area. If you drive there, park on Mt Diablo in one of the metered spots, or take Bart if you can. Bart station is less than a 5 minute walk away. So overall, I'd recommend Dr. Ensor. I need to get sunglasses next year and I think I'll go to him for the exam, see if I like any of the sunglasses at his office and if not, pick out frames at another office. His exam and the professionalism of his staff was good enough that I'll go there first even if it means I have to try another place if I don't see what I'm looking for. read more
