I was having a few issues with my eye sight and wanted an in-depth eye health exam plus an updated prescription for glasses. After reading reviews on top ranked providers in my area, I decided to make an appointment with Dr. Stephanie Lew at Briones Eyecare. The entire experience was excellent from working with the front deck, to the eye exam with Dr. Lew, to the helpful guidance from Jose on how to properly put in and take out contact lenses. I came away from the appointment feeling like I was in the best of hands and with a thorough understanding of my eye health (all good news!). I picked up my new glasses a few days ago and was immediately pleased with the improved vision from the updated prescription. Overall a great, un-rushed, high quality experience. When our son failed his recent vision screening at his 12 year well check, we knew something was wrong and were eager to get him to the optometrist. The office was great- worked with us to find a sooner appointment than their next available which was too far out for red flag issue. Dr. Gan knew right away that something was wrong and the staff worked together to get him an immediate ophthalmology referral where he was seen that same day. From there, he was seen by a retinal specialist a couple of days later and at UCSF two days after that. A week later, we're dealing with a rare eye disease- but optimistic our son will regain vision in his left eye and have vision preserved in his right eye. Without the team here, I'm not sure we would have been in this same situation. We thank everyone at this office and are happy to have them right in our neighborhood. They were not only professional and competent, but seemed to actually care... and it made all the difference. read more

Dr. Gan is the best optometrist I've been to by a very wide margin. She is thorough and friendly. But the most important thing to me is this: she helped me to understand the tradeoffs inherent in choosing a prescription. In my case, this resulted in me getting a prescription that is optimized for viewing at a short distance for use during lengthy computer use, and it is like a massage for my eyes. I just visited this establishment yesterday for an exam and a contact fitting (first time wearer) and it was a very nice visit. The Dr. was both professional and personable. I had to bring my four year old daughter along for the exam and there was a nice play area for kids, complete with a myriad of toys to occupy their attentions. When my daughter tired of playing, she joined us in the exam room and the Dr. was more than accomidating about this, letting my daughter "help" her out, teaching her some of the science of optometry, and even letting her look through the microscope at my blue dyed eye. Very cool! The Dr. explained every step in the exam and emphasized that she cares about the health of the eye while she understands that the patient cares about vision and comfort. She also informed me that it is essential that children, even as young as 3, get an eye exam. Problems with vision, etc. can go undetected by pediatricians (with their generalized training) and some eye problems, if uncorrected by age 7, can be irreversible. Needless to say, I booked an appointment for my daughter. I have another appointment next week for my contact fitting, so if there is more to report, I will. Otherwise I will just say that I recommend this Optometry office. They were friendly, efficient and informative. read more

I found Dr Gan when I lived in Walnut Creek. Now that I'm in the Peninsula, I still drive out here to see her. She performs very thorough eye examinations, talks with me about my usage and daily life to understand the strain my eyes may be under, and she gives recommendations with background as to why she is recommending certain things. The staff here is always incredibly helpful. I was a pain in the butt picking new eyeglass frames and asking questions about different types of lenses or even contact lenses, and they all patiently answered all my questions and helped me with my selection. I was very happy with the selection of frames; there was quite a variety, and the staff here helped me find frames that fit my face. I ended up with frames I otherwise would not have picked for myself, and i love them. I definitely recommend Dr Gan to anyone looking for an optometrist, whether you're in contra costa or an hour drive away. read more

When I started getting headaches in fourth grade, my lovely teacher recommended I get my eyes checked. I've been wearing reading glasses ever since. Now the thing about my eyes is that I can pretty much read anything but my muscles are straining to make this happen. My previous eye doctor was mean to me when doing the "lens 1 or lens 2" thing because my eyes could focus regardless of the lens. If only I remembered his name so I give him a review too. Enough rambling, my point is I'm very picky about my optometrist. I started going to Dr. Gan and I love her! She is incredibly patient and explains what she is looking for. Though, I've never been to Dr. Cushing, some of my family goes to her and one of my friends comes out from the city to see her. So I think she rocks too. They have convenient hours, such as evening and Saturday appointments. Josie, who does the scheduling and helps with the frames, is so sweet. This is a great office! I saw Dr. Cushing who was very thorough and explained what I was doing wrong (although I already knew .... I just didn't listen) and showed me the damage I was doing through pictures. She is very knowledgeable and friendly. Although the only experience I've had with the office staff has been receiving reminder messages (which I LOVE!!) and paying my bills, they've been super friendly. I do plan on purchasing a new pair of glasses and they seem to have a large selection. I always prefer to go to a small, independent office rather than one of the large, corporate places and this is just another affirmation of that! read more

I walked into the office with no expectations. I sat by accident on my Italian glasses and they became mangled. The lady in the front office looked at the glasses and asked me to take a seat. She was willing to look at the glasses and see what she can do. Maybe 10 minutes later she came back, with a smile on her face saying, "All done". She asked me to put the glasses on. I've taken my daughters to get glasses a few times and I myself have had great luck finding a pair of prescription eyeglasses over the years. The staff has always been very helpful and honest with us with what will work for us. One time my daughter wanted a specific frame from Kate Spade and they ordered then for us as they were a previous year model. Their Pleasanton Hacienda Park office has a selection of Oakley frames, so I had to go down there the last few times. Yesterday, I went there to order some $300 RX Oakley lenses. The front office person whose name I believe is Jerry, was out of this world rude to me. He was about to drag me into an all out yelling match over whether or not he was willing to call Oakley for me to see if they would warranty my broken frame. I was having a wonderful day, and he put me in a bad mood for the rest of my evening. I'll continue seeing dr gan for RX, but I will be taking my business elsewhere for my Oakley frame/lens needs, thanks to this encounter. read more

Last year I went to an optometrist that my vision insurance covered (my company uses Spectera which isn't as good as VSP) and found that while the doctor herself was quite good, I wasn't too impressed with the rest of the staff. This year I decided to ask around and do more research to find someone better. I was not let down. The primary reason for my visit was to look into getting prescription Gunnar glasses as I work in IT looking at screens all day long, and this place is one of the few in the area that sell them. Here are my top couple take aways from visiting Cushing and Gan. 1. Dr. Gan is incredibly nice, knowledgable, and professional. She made it clear multiple times that she wanted to help me find a way to have the best vision possible. I was extra impressed by her staying on top of the latest research on working in front of computers and displays all day and how the blue light can affect people. (Spoiler alert - The research is still in its infancy and inconclusive, but she's seen many patients who have been greatly helped by using glasses and prescriptions made especially for that kind of work.) She also understood that my greatest need was for something to help me while at the computer since I work in IT and sit/stand in front of multiple screens fro 6-12 hours per day. After a couple tests she showed me how I do not need a prescription for seeing/reading something up to 30 inches away from my face, but she also showed me how getting lenses that only correct for my astigmatism will sharpen everything. She took over 15 minutes going over ways to help me see better in that 12-30 inch range. 2. Dr. Gan is NOT PUSHY. At all. My regular glasses and lenses are just about a year old. I told her off the bat that I didn't like these gasses and prescription as I have liked others in the past. She pointed out to me that the correction for my astigmatism has changed, but not by very much, and that I didn't actually need to get new lenses for distance. Either she's the soft sell queen, or she's genuinely not out to make you buy something that is not necessary. I am personally leaning toward the latter. 3. The staff at the office is INCREDIBLE. I was greeted as I walked in and every one was smiling. The new patient paperwork was ready and waiting for me. The thing that stuck out most to me, though, was that when I didn't like any of the Gunnar frames they had on display I was instructed to look at the Gunnar website and let them know which styles I was interested in so that they could order them for me to try on in person. That's so great! Conclusion: I'm glad I went here. I will be getting glasses from them. Even though I have to pay out of pocket and then submit everything for reimbursement from my insurance company, I think they're worth it. And for what it's worth, my wife is making an appointment with them as well. read more

I have been 4 different Optometrists in the past 10 years. I can say without a doubt that my experience here was the best of any I have been to. The staff was friendly and delightful. I believe Angel was the one who helped me. To make a long story short, they really got me out of a jam. I came on the middle of the day on Saturday with 2 pairs of broken glasses. I was taking a test that Monday and really needed my glasses fixed. One of the glasses needed just some tweaking the other had really fallen apart. Angel (an/ or Josie? again not sure on the names) fixed both pairs for free and treated me like a long time customer. I will be getting frames from them in December. I went here to look for frames after a very long search, and was met with a warm welcome by Josie who gave me plenty of time to try on frames myself and explore the store a bit. She then offered to help me and got a sense of the styles I was interested in. She was patient, kind, and knowledgable and we found a frame that was the perfect fit for my face. I have a strong prescription, so when the finished glasses came back with the lenses looking too thick, she was more than happy to ensure they were remade to my satisfaction and did not even charge me extra for the change. I have been going to Cushing & Gan for 8 years now and I have had nothing but a pleasant experience. My family now goes to them as well. I have seen both Dr. Cushing and Dr. Gan, and both are extremely professional during the exam. Not only that, but they really do take the time to get to know you as well. I also love how they have evening and Saturday appointments, making it easy for me since I work full time. It can be hard to get a Saturday appointment, but they are more than willing to add your name to the wait list in case anything opens up. Josie is fantastic! No one else but here is allowed to adjust any of my glasses, even when I was away in college. I set them aside and waited until I came home to visit and brought them to Joise. I just went to my first appointment with Dr. Cushing today and she was great! In the 20+ years that I have worn glasses and contacts, she is the first one to explain about my eye refocusing ability, help with my dry eyes when wearing contacts and I really appreciate that she didn't charge me for a whole new fit for contacts, but rather just a re-fit fee (half the price). Everyone was great in expiditing me in/out of the office. The glasses selection in the WC location is small (it is probably much bigger at their Hacienda Park Optometry location) but the gal helping me was really helpful in picking styles as well and advising all the colors that the glasses come in. I am absolutely going to go back to Dr. Cushing and highly recommend her to others. read more

I got a prescription for progressive eyeglasses. My prescription is tough, as I have a strong correction and severe astigmatism. Dr Cushing was thorough and very pleasant. She explained the changes she made and why she made them, and worked with me to get a computer prescription based on how far I like to sit from the computer. I was a little disappointed in the gal behind the counter (optician?) when I went to look at frames. She was a little cool and not very helpful. I actually look forward to my yearly eye doctor appointment (boy, I wish I could say that about the dentist!). Their office is conveniently located in the Palos Verdes shopping center -- which is just a short ride up Geary Road from North Main Street -- far away from the many stoplights and traffic congestion of downtown Walnut Creek and I normally get a nice (free) parking spot less than 12 feet from their front door. When I'm done, I can pick up a few groceries at Lunardi's and stop at Starbucks for a latte. But over and beyond the convenient location is the friendly atmosphere and the knowledgeable staff. I wear contact lenses and Dr. Cushing fit me with the most comfortable pair I've ever had (Accuvue Oasis) with a monovision prescription which has enabled me to leave my reading glasses at home. I'm picky when it comes to doctors and dentists, and this place gets my five-star rating. read more

I have gone to this place for several years but will never set foot in their office again. The girls who run the front of the house are rude, snotty and severly incompetent. They repeatedly messed up my appointment schedule and didn't apologize for repeatedly inconveniencing me. They have no respect for people's time. They also refused to refund me on a pair of glasses that were not prepared properly and I wasted over $400 that they should have refunded to me.
