    Steamed buns with duck
    Angela S.

This may have been the best fine dining I've had in Anchorage. I had no idea UAA had a culinary arts program, or a teaching kitchen, so I was thrilled when a friend scored a reservation for lunch and invited me to tag along. Now, let's start with this: These young people are LEARNING, so we were patient, gracious, and understanding when there was a slight hiccup - don't waste an amazing reservation here on a quick, hour or less lunch. Take your time, talk to the servers and pastry chefs and everyone else - you'll be glad you did, and they are passionate about creating a wonderful experience for you. We spent 2+ hours over 4 courses and had an absolutely delightful time, with some downright delicious food. There are no alcoholic beverages, but be sure to ask about the drink specials - there was a cold and hot one, we tried the strawberry lemonade and we were so glad we did! Fresh, crisp lemonade with a strawberry popsicle for sweetness, it definitely put me in the mood for summer, and the presentation was very fun. Next up, we had to try the steamed buns with duck - the steamed buns were perfect, soft and fluffy, and the pickled onions plus cilantro were the perfect compliment to the duck. There were 2 per plate, so everyone got to try a little snack before we dove straight into the salad and soup course. We tried the steak & mushroom soup (soup of the day), which was the most tender steak pieces, complimented by caramelized onions and oyster mushrooms, in a nice, thick soup base that was made even better with fresh cracked pepper. We also tried the caprese salad, and I swear the tomatoes had to be the size of cantaloupes! They were beautiful, perfectly ripe heirloom tomatoes with a gorgeous ball of still-warm mozzarella that simply folded itself out once punctured, topped of course with a tasty, herbaceous balsamic. Now on to the main course: the pork belly with kimchi rice, or alternatively the Tuscan seafood pasta. By now, we were insisting everyone try everything on the table because it was all so scrumptious. Pro-tip: try your entree, share a little, then have it boxed up for later so you have room for the dessert buffet! The pork belly was perfectly fried, not a hint of weird gelatinous fat, just crisp, slightly spicy pork belly and a nicely spiced kimchi rice, with those pickled onions! I swear I could have them on everything. The scallops on the Tuscan seafood pasta were perfectly pan seared, still moist and simply melt in your mouth. And then we promptly moved to the best part: the dessert buffet! Do this, don't deny yourself. Get some coffee, take your time. Maybe have them scoop you up some freshly homemade ice cream and have an adffogato? That would have been perfect for this week's flavor - coffee! And definitely ask questions and talk to the pastry chefs about which ones they made, it's so interesting to hear them explain the tricks to the perfect macaron "feet", or how to make a divine chantilly cream. My favorites from the dessert buffet: Lychee mango tart, macarons, and the most delicate petit four that was perfectly bite-sized. My only complaint was that there was no chocolate, but we survived - ha! Final tip: make a reservation for Friday, as parking is free on campus on Fridays, so you won't have any excuse not to take you time. Run, don't walk, to get one of these reservations before they close for the semester!

    Ch Cá Lã Vng $15.50

Alaskabest kept secret! So, here's the deal... UAA has a culinary arts program. They teach all aspects of the food and beverage industry (cooking and restaurant management). They are going for the high end experience. The students get to cook, management gets practice ordering, the pastry class gets to practice their craft and all of it goes to good use. This little gem of a restaurant is the Lab where they get to actually run a restaurant feeding the general public. We were greeted at the door and seated immediately. The level of service was above what I see at almost every restaurant that I know of. I believe it can be attributed to the amount of focus that the students are engaged in. The menu is available online. I was grateful that I took the time to get familiar with it before I went for lunch. I got to go with my trusty cohort P-Jake. We were presented with a tasty little treat from the chef after we were seated. They were broiled muscles with a dusting of bread crumbs and Parmesan. Both P-Jake and I agreed that we would be satisfied with a giant platter of those! I decided on the Ch Cá Lã Vng ($15.50) while P-Jake went for the Ostrich Steak ($17.50). We waited quite a while for our entrees. All of the other tables came out in an anticipated amount of time, but something went wrong with our order. I'm pretty sure that they had to re-fire one or both dishes at least once. To their credit, they got it right before they sent it out to us. It was very much worth the wait. The saving grace was the communication to us from the server. She kept us from feeling forgotten and they comped us desert. Both P-Jake and I kept it in mind that this is a school where they are learning. That fact kept us feeling very patient. It was worth the wait. Neither one of us had ever had anything like the meals that we got to enjoy. There was a lot of attention put into the preparation and plating of our lunch. The dessert table was worth the trip alone. I've been to some pretty fine restaurants but have never seen finer presentation of after dinner delights! We tried them all. My favorite was the Trifle. There were winners all around, my companion and I, the culinary arts program, the students that were responsible for putting together and preparing the experience. I can't wait to go back. 1) Open for lunch only, Tuesday through Friday. 2) Make reservations for a Friday 3) Dessert is presented Fridays only. 4) free parking on Fridays at UAA. PS. Get the timing thing down and you get your fifth star!

Lucy's is run by the students of the Culinary Arts and Hospitality program at UAA so they're only open on Tuesdays - Fridays from 11:30-1:30, but to make up for this, they have an amazing menu that's super affordable. If you get a chance, try the Ostrich steak. It was juicy and tender like I never would've expected.

Fantastic student run fine dining at a great price. Delicious local cuisine with a excellent dessert bar. Make your reservation well ahead of time.

Seating is made up of booths along the window perimeter, tables thru the middle area and a large bar area with more tables and stools along the counter. The menu selection is surprisingly diverse. I was happy to see halibut as the fish for their fish & chips, as it is often cod or other white fish. I find halibut to be the best. They also have a few dishes with nods to Korean and Thai flavors. There are pizzas and dinner salads too. I went with their bacon jam burger for dinner. It is cooked to your liking and has a grilled apple, cambozola, bacon jam, arugula & house mayo. This is the best burger I've had in a long time. The flavors complement each other so well. If you are a fan of bleu cheese you will really love the cambozola. It is creamy and oozy and is amazing on a burger. My spouse tried their Cuban sandwich and didn't like that the pickles were mediocre and didn't add to the overall flavors, and that the bread wasn't crisped or toasted in any way -- the way Cubans traditionally are. He also took a chance with a appetizer off the specials menu which he imaged was Brussels sprouts however it was shaved sautéed Brussels sprout leaves, over warm couscous with lots of fresh herbs, jalapeños, and heavily spiced with bold spices like fennel. It was bizarre and not like anything we've ever tried. We liked some of the flavors but all together didn't make sense to us so we sent it back, unfortunately. Our child tried the Mac and cheese that came with purple grapes and sorbet. The Mac and cheese was good although I'd advise SRH to try a larger noodle than a small shell so kids can stab it better and get it in their little mouths. The sorbet must be seasonal/rotating bc it was cinnamon honey pear and it was crazy delicious. I'd come back for just the sorbet tbh. Other than that our red-haired bespectacled server was fairly attentive and quite friendly, even on a very busy Friday dinner rush. Parking lot just outside seems easy enough as long as you can grab a spot at busy times. Will be back in the future for the fried halibut (and sorbet!).

It's the perfect size bar/restaurant. Very clean and bright inside. Extra long booths for families and some tables in the middle section with a really nice bar area off to the side. Large TV's hang on the walls for sports games. Both the food and drink menus are noticeably smaller here. The brew/local tap selection is a lot smaller at this location. They serve some mixed bowls here that they don't at Old Seward, but they were able to accommodate special requests we made such as "chowder fries." Service was superb here. Our table had the following: 6 oysters Rockefeller, 1 fried calamari, a half size blackened halibut Cesar salad, a grilled ribeye steak and an Alaskan halibut fish and chips. Food notes: the oysters were super fresh and delicious, perfectly cooked so that they were only broiled on top and still almost rare below. However the toppings could've been improved with better bacon, and maybe a touch more spinach. Even a small dollop of Béarnaise sauce would've been better than the Parmesan. Nevertheless this was probably my favorite bite of the night. The halibut on the fish & chips was also fresh flaky and really tender. The chips were like thin steak fries that had been battered but were still under seasoned. They weren't great, and no one ate them even our toddler who loves fries. The blackened halibut on the salad was tougher, and dry. There were too many store-bought croutons and the salad dressing was possibly store-bought too and bland for a Cesar. The ribeye was totally sad. It was quite thin and unimpressive especially for the cost. It came with more of those dismal fries and some plain broccolini. Our steak-loving dinner companion only ate about half and didn't care to doggy-bag the rest so it went to waste. Calamari was average, and came with two oily amateur-chef looking sauces, one mayo flavored and one somewhat spicer was basically the same as the first. Our excellent waiter mixed up a cocktail sauce himself that blew the other sauces out of the water. Bravo to him. He was the best while waiting on us also, quick to refill a water or retrieve more drinks from the bar. Good thing the Rockefeller was great, I'd be back for that alone ($6/per oyster) but otherwise I don't think I'd rush back to Fletcher's. Many other eateries in the area that are tastier, with equally difficult parking.

It was tiny white shrimp from pristine waters of South America. It was a Mexican cuisine presentation. Spicy and bursting with different flavors. Best eaten when you tried to get the most variety on one forkful. Very cleaver. I am a self admitted foodie. I sincerely appreciated the Chef's thought process in bringing together the perfect combination of flavor, texture, healthy ingredients, cost to customer, portion control and of course staying power so the hungry monster does not return before morning. This is perhaps the third time I have ever eaten here as I am married to a steak and potatoes man. He really does not care to eat away from his own chair in front of the TV. (He really has many romantic redeeming qualities) but enjoying an evening out slowly working one's way through a Professionals work in the kitchen is not one of them. If he cannot drive the cleaver masters work he has no appreciation of the endeavors. I understand as arriving by Uber or Lyft is fine with me. Anyway Kinley's has again entertained me and calmed me down after a busy day. The only negative and it is a major one, the bartender encouraged a middle aged professional woman to completely dominate the room with her loud and plain offensive opinions. She was only drinking wine but he was entraining her an another while ignoring drink orders. Consequently another professional woman dining with a friend kept raising her voice to be heard above the painful noise at the bar. There were 2 single gentlemen dining alone on both sides of me. Both got disgusted with this action, commented to me how I can tolerate it, got doggie bags, refused after dinner drinks and left. I was about to do the same and but both offensive individuals started to make overtures to leave so I finished my wine before leaving with my doggie bag. Maybe if all three of us had made comments it could have been curtailed but we did not. Over all Kinley's was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I chose the Sea Foam Smoothie with the Moon Mix (green papaya powder, flax seed, chicory, pectin, rice bran, calcium, magnesium, calcium, and L. acidophilus with 72 ionic trace minerals extracted from sea water....sounds very healthy to me!) that promotes cleansing, clarity and weight loss as the health benefits. Not knowing what to expect from such an eclectic list of ingredients, the smoothie itself was delicious and refreshing after the first sip. It certainly lives up to its name as the Sea Foam by its appearance (I think kale was one of the ingredients I missed due to the color). I had the Peanut Butter Conspiracy in a previous visit (peanut butter, banana, apple juice, and spirulina) which was also very good. I can't help but think that the owners are vinyl collectors of classic rock. On a side note, Peanut Butter Conspiracy was the name of a psychedelic pop rock band from the late 60's. Smoothies aside, the food here is also worth trying out. Some of the dishes I had on previous visits include the Lamb Burger (Australian lamb, red onion, lettuce, tomato, feta, Swiss cheese and tomatoes), the Chopped Chicken Salad (tomato, bell peppers, cucumbers, red onions, and sunflower seeds), the Roasted Brussels Sprouts with chipotle sauce, and the Bacon Beef Bleu Burger (organic grass fed beef, avocado, bleu cheese, lettuce, red onions, tomato, mayo, and uncured turkey bacon).
