So glad that Luby's business has been acquired and will continue to serve its fans. On our latest visit, Crispy Pork Tenderloin was new to the menu. We recommend trying it, it was crispy and tender, and the gravy enhanced the flavor with some spice (tho it was delicious on its own). There were 3 Fan Favorites available at $6.99 each with 2 sides and bread. I enjoyed the Seafood Patty previously, but have yet to try the Spaghetti. I decided to try the BBQ Baked Potato stuffed with chunks of tender, smoky Brisket and BBQ sauce, and I will definitely get it again. Very satisfying dinner with friendly service. read more

He was so excited to take me here because it was favorite of years passed. One thing of ten was good, the fish almondine. Literally everything else was cold, dried to jerky or just bad. The chicken fingers couldn't even be chewed. We did tell the clerk but she only offered to replace with more of the same-not interested in more jerky? I'm from Los Angeles, and we don't have Luby's in California.. PERIOD. When I moved to Houston, and came to my first Luby's, I immediately fell in love. I normally visit the location off of 290 & Spring Cypress. I've never had a bad experience until now. I came here today with a friend because I was dying of hunger, I haven't had anything to eat the entire freaking day. I planned on devouring that cafeteria! I come up to the cafeteria line and NOTHING was fresh! Everything they had to serve was OLD, HARD, and just needed to be thrown out! I ended up picking the Chicken Fried Steak as my entree, and the only reason I picked it was because it was the only thing that looked like it had just came out of the fryer. Anyway, I move down to the side dishes area and ummm, WHERE THE HELL ARE THE VEGGIES?! They were out of cauliflower, and broccoli, even Mac & Cheese. Luby's is known for they freakishly delicious Mac & Cheese, and they did not have any whatsoever for me to eat. OMG. I was pissed. I ended up just taking the CFS alone without any sides because everything else just looked old. I get to the very end where I pay for my meal and the cashier is bent over on the other side writing in her diary or whatever. She glances over at me, and looks back down and continues writing. A good 30 seconds pass by and she asks me if I need help. I'm pretty sure if I'm standing next to your freaking register with a tray full of food I'm gonna need some help. TAKE MY MONEY!!! Or don't. Lady at register counted the limones in my Cup/ drink and told me she had to charge me for them. I told her they have never charged me for 3 limons before. She then got an attitude because I questioned that if I would of got a to go cup, would she open my cup to try to count the limons. Last time I went was at 5:30 on a weekday and the fish was so tough!!! Part of it was inedible. I went to one near my home at 2:30- tough fish again And why isn't the tartar sauce as delicious as it used to be? Today I went and I thought I struck gold- steaming hot fish, yummy golden crispy crunchy crust- Mmmmhm!!! Tender white fish- no tough ness but in the fourth bite it seemed a bit fishy. It got worse so I almost spit a few bites out By the end of the fish I was afraid to eat the last piece bec the fishiness was so apparent. I hope I don't get sick later. Yuck! Lubys is normally an okay meal with decent flavors and selections. However the so-called special on yesterday was anything but. The special was Turkey on Dressing. The turkey must have been leftover from last week because it was rancid. Four of us from work were out to lunch and we each got a good whiff of the malodorous concoction. The server graciously offered to bring another dish, and apologized profusely. However, no refund was offered and they still appeared to be serving it. I was not the lucky beneficiary of this non-piquant selection, but the Blackened Tilapia I had was only so-so in flavor and not warm enough. On Sunday, September 17, 2023, at approximately 3:30 p.m. I visited the Luby's Cafeteria at 1727 Old Spanish Trail in Houston. I have dined at that location several times before, but this time my experience was enough to convince me not to return. The food (chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes) was at room temperature. When I complained, they offered to "heat it up". I refused; food left at room temperature for very long is not safe to eat. Two other customers also told me their food was cold. Luby's can be best described as a cafeteria style "Human Feed Lot" it's only redeeming factor is that it is located next to the Hampton Inn and there are no other restaurants in walking distance. Generally low grade food that's been baking under heat lamps for at least an hour. The dirty white heat lamps hang low over the service line. So low that it is difficult for the line workers to hand over the full plates without rubbing your food on the bottom of the heat lamps. The bottoms of all the heat lamps are covered with a variety of dripping food particles. If you can get past all of that; Luby's is however, cheap. $20 bucks will buy you a big meal. If you are very hungry and short on cash....Luby's is the place for you. If you can afford better, Luby's is a pass. read more

I have been visiting this Luby's location off and on for the last 5 years. I usually get the liver and onions and occasionally, 2 sides for a total of 9 bucks (that's only if I don't have sides at home). If you want dessert and a beverage, be prepared to pay an additional 6 bucks (total $15). I have tried most of the side dishes: sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, garden salad, collard greens, cabbage or mac n cheese. They were all....meh! The collard greens were boiled in water and that about covers it! They could do a LOT better with the seasoning of the food. I suspect that the lack of seasoning may be due to customers with food allergies, diabetes, gluten sensitivity or high blood pressure, but if you are going to cater to them, you need to change your name to "Lubys: The Healthy Kitchen' and I will take my business elsewhere! Me? When I eat out, I want FLAVOR, d*mmit!!!! I want to TASTE and savor the food! So bring on the chicken stock, the garlic, the pepper, the salt, the REAL butter, the lard, the hamhocks, the salt pork, the smoked turkey, the oil--BRING ON THE FLAVOR, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! The grilled beef liver and onions is one of the best I've had in this country at any restaurant. I remember how good these were when I was younger and I was not disappointed today. Too bad most restaurants don't get this right and I am always disappointed elsewhere. The grilled pork chop and shrimp, I would give 3.5 stars. The chicken and rice soup is very good. A little salty but the flavor was deep and made with natural chicken juices and not from pre-canned chicken broth. You can taste the difference. They had nice soft tender pieces of chicken in the soup that was simply delicious. 99% of places I've had chicken soup, the broth was pre-canned and tasted like 2 stars with pieces of chicken as tasty as rock. Not here. The soup felt so nourishing to my body. I can't say that of 99% of chicken soups out there. All of the food here just felt like it hit my body in all the right spots which is hard to do at most restaurants but Luby's has done it again. Mashed potatoes and gravy were fresh and great, as always. Service was great and friendly and I gave them a good tip. read more

I usually do take out at luby's but today I decided to dine in. Once I got my lunch and I sat at a table I noticed that the silverware was nasty and dirty so I mentioned it to one of the waiters and he brought me more silverware and that was dirty too So I asked for plastic ware. I started in on my meal and I was there for a few minutes. There was a family sitting behind me and the waiter catered them All the time they were there, like every few minutes. He never once came and asked me was I okay or if I needed anything. I was there for over 30 minutes and not one time did he come to my table. Once that family left, Then he walked past my table and asked was everything okay? At this point I'm just about done with my meal. There were two ladies sitting in front of me that had been there before I came and not one time did I see him go to their table to assist them with anything. He then asked them if they needed anything once that family left. I don't want to put this out in the wrong light, But that family that was behind me was a white family and the ladies that were sitting in front of me were Black, So am I and so was the waiter. Definition of a 3 star. Nothing special, simple comfort food. They have a special going on right now for 2 combos + drinks for 20. It's not a bad deal since we were able to get a giant chicken fried chicken, a chicken marsala, 4 sides, 2 cornbreads, and 2 drinks for 20 dollars. None of the food was that spectacular, but it was not terrible. It's fast, I even managed to get a refill. I stayed next door to this location while traveling on business and thought I should stop in and check out the place. The parking lot and drive through was packed for this commercialized home style restaurant. I ordered a fish combo which I could not fully appreciate. I am not a cod fish expert by any means, but it was bland and dry. And to make matters worst, a half combo consists of a piece of cod fish that it broken in half. For those who eat cod, you know it is not too big to begin with, so this was odd. Thank goodness I did not like it anyway. I would give Luby's another try, but not their cod. read more

The historical photos of what Luby's first used to be and nostalgia the restaurant endures is what keeps driving customers back. In addition, a large seating area for large families like mine to sit around and talk over the amazing food. Speaking of food, the variety of choices displayed under the warm heat lamp keeps me coming back for more. And finally, the low low prices of plates for a decent amount of people is just amazing. My first time to a Luby's. I was I was pleasantly surprised in a completely underwhelming sort of way. The staff was helpful, friendly and attentive. 4 stars for them. The dining room was large and most importantly it was clean. 4 stars. Value... Paid 14 for lunch. Got too much food. Couldn't have finished it of I wanted to. 2-4 stars. Food.. absolutely average. No flavor. Everything was cooked properly, but seriously folks add some damned flavor. The GREEN salad was the most flavorful part of lunch... That almost makes me want to cry. 1 star Will I be back? Not on purpose, which is too bad, the place has the bones to be a decent chain. Just need to revamp the ingredients and hire a chef that understands the basic concept of flavor. read more

This was default choice as I was staying next door w/o transportation. I started out wrong, entering through "take-out" section after it was closed and then picking up my own takeout container thereby contaminating it. The staff were nice, some laughed while others scolded. The food was above avg for a cafeteria style setup. I'm sure it helps that I was actually starving, having travelled all day w/o eating. I got the baked chicken and stuffing with Mac and cheese and corn as my 2 sides; strwbry shcake for dessert and sweet tea; all for just under $20 with military discount. My very picky, health conscious brother was also able to find something he liked and he was complimentary too which is really saying something. I like that they had a wide variety of options, including chicken in like 4 different ways. Really like this location. It's clean, and accommodates bigger parties. The food is really good and seemed fresh. Today I tried the drive they and I didn't have to wait long at all. My food was super hot and I made it through with five cars ahead of me in about 10-12 minutes. The lady at the window was very friendly. I was in the medical center on Monday afternoon and when I searched for nearby restaurants I was so happy to see a Luby's! I went through the line inside to get two to-go plates. Boy were they a disappointment. I don't know if the new ownership company has changed recipes or this location is just bad. The first plate was fried fish, mac n cheese, and fried okra. The fried fish now has a cornmeal breading instead of the flakey crispy crust and it tastes bad. Very tough and bland. The mac n cheese tasted like pasta with a spritz of cheese flavored water, but the fried okra was pretty good once we added seasoning at home as it was very bland. The second plate was chicken fried chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes. The girl behind the counter informed me that they did not have any mashed potatoes but literally 30 seconds later the man behind me in line ordered mashed potatoes with his food and she told him they would be ready in about 3 minutes. She had not moved from her spot yet she "suddenly" knew this new info? Poor customer service. The chicken fried chicken was good as were the green beans but the chicken needed some seasoning as it was very bland. The desserts I got, icebox lemon pie and chess pie, were pretty good. Please have your cooks use some seasoning on the food when cooking! Most everything was very bland. I do want to give props to the woman working at the register. Very helpful and nice! First a confession. This review is a little sentimental. My hometown Luby's closed years ago, as did Luby's in most of the country except Texas. Now when I come to Luby's I remember the times there with the kids and grandparents. This is a great location. Close to the medical center. Spacious dining room. Friendly wait staff. They'll offer refills and "to go" beverages without being asked. Sure, Luby's cafeteria style dining isn't for everyone or for every occasion. Trust me when I assure you, however, that you'd miss it if it were gone! Luby's offers basic American style comfort food for the most part, but some healthy choices are available. It's a great place to teach the kids to eat their vegetables! Costs can add up if you're not careful, but use of the Luann platter, kids meals, senior discounts... makes pricing quite reasonable. read more

Very disappointed in my experience tonight. Against my better judgment I used door dash to order my food. I ordered blackened chicken, mac n cheese, and mixed veggies. My boyfriend ordered blackened chicken, fried okra, and russet potatoes. We also ordered a side of yams, cucumber salad, and cornbread dressing. First, my boyfriend received a notification that the blackened chicken was out of stock so that item was automatically changed to chicken fried chicken (no ph call to ask if we still want the order and if so what would we like to exchange it for), on top of that, there was an UP CHARGE on the item THEY replaced FOR US. So after speaking w the manager who admitted that he thought the blackened chicken was out of stock so he selected the chicken fried steak said he made an error and they do still have the item.... At this point we should have cancelled, but we continued... Door dash delivers. Bags are unsealed, reeks of cigarette smoke, and contains all kind of items we didn't ask for. In one container there was salmon (which smelled terrible) and two sides of mac n cheese. The other container was blackened chicken w mac n cheese and green beans (not mixed veggies, no okra, no russet potatoes). They did send the yams and dressing along with 3 different pies (obviously because they were anticipating an unpleasant response). We call and they apologize, but refer us to door dash. No questions or concern about what went wrong, no offer of a discount, nothing. The worst!!! read more
