We came here spontaneously after dinner on a weekday evening. I had the dirty chai affogato. I asked them to make it decaf since it was later in the evening the dirty chai comes with two Indian biscuits, nicely complimenting the chai flavor. This is a great ice cream and coffee shop right off the main road! The location is pretty central which is a double edged sword: great for walking but can be hard to find parking. As a disclaimer: I am of the belief that Gourmet Soft Serve is equivalent to Artisan Crafted Twinkies. I didn't need an elevated soft serve experience, I thought. I entered Lou Aug's with this mindset twice before writing this review. I came out...conflicted. Yes, it's junk food, and nan o man it is smooth and creamy junk food. My first impression both visits was how bright and clean the shop is and how cheerful the staff were. They do not scrimp on staffing, each day there were three people behind the counter. The first visit I got one of their custom milkshakes. It was "The Rittenhouse", I was told it's popular. It was...okay. It tasted good, I'm just not a fan of solid things floating around in a shake. The second time I came with the NMA. I opted for a traditional twist. One with Jimmie's. The boy got the Oreo Milkshake. The ice cream was delicious, and his milkshake, with more the consistency of a DQ Blizzard, was what I am ordering next time as it was yum. For all their cheerfulness, the slightly off-putting moment was when I asked what a particular item was made of, as they have lots of fun names with no description on the order board. On both visits the staff pointed me to a paper trifold menu and "you can read here". Do you not know? Or are you trained to not take the time to answer with a description? Combine the two together like you would in one amazing affogato and I wish I could give Lu & Aug's a worthy ten stars! I've been curious about checking out Lu & Aug's since it opened over the summer. But it took a discussion about their decadent-sounding hot chocolate options and some generous coupons sent in the mail for me to get a group together for a proper try. And it beyond satisfied my sweet tooth! Whether you its a simple single flavor with one topping or going swirl and overboard on toppings, soft serve ice cream is easily one of the best simple pleasures in life. And my chocolate & vanilla swirl with caramel sauce, marshmallows, and graham cracker crumble was a lovely treat! I also respect that they have a vegan soft-serve ice cream for vegan and lactose-intolerant people. Hot chocolate was the main thing that brought us together, and between us, our table was very enamored with our Mexican drinking chocolate, lavender hot chocolate, and salted caramel hot chocolate. My salted caramel one was perfectly sweet when it needed to be with just the right amount of heat. It was also cool to see them carry that vegan trend forward with a plant-based hot chocolate. Toss in coffee from Ox, donuts from Yori's Church Street, Cookies from Famous 4th Street, and then some, and Lu & Aug's gives plenty of reasons to enjoy it that go beyond ice cream. This happens to be one of those rare, curious establishments that views hot chocolate not as a random throwaway drink (usually as a consolation prize on a menu of otherwise caffeinated espresso drinks), but as the primary attraction. Lu & Augs takes their hot chocolate very seriously. Alongside their soft serve and to-go classic ice cream pints, they serve no less than 10 (or was it 12?) variations of hot chocolate, including classic, cardamom spice, mexican sipping chocolate, and more, all using their own cocoa powder recipe made in-house. Their sipping chocolate is thick and less sweet - we opted for the classic hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallow topping. On a brisk evening it absolutely hit right - with deep cocoa flavor and a proper balance of sweet, cream, and chocolate. As a side note - I would probably opt out of the marshmallow topping next time. It makes for a great Instagram pic, but the hot chocolate is so good on its own that throwing marshmallow on top feels unconscionable. read more

Finally stopped in to try some of their ice cream, I was in the mood for a shake. The store is nice and clean with several tables inside and a few outside. I was a bit daunted by the line but it moved quickly. They take your order and you have a seat or wait awkwardly near the door until they call your name. They have a wide variety of toppings and the staff does a great job plating. They were delicately and purposefully putting the cups together making sure they looked great. I ordered a chocolate shake with Oreo and was rather disappointed. The Oreo is pulverized so it's like dust, no little chunks whatsoever and almost hard to tell it was in there at all. The ice cream itself isn't very exciting, but to be fair there are not many soft serve shakes I think highly of(if any), I much prefer hand scooped ice cream. It was also pricey and rather small for about 9$. That's my take as an adult going for a shake. If you have kids I'm sure they will love the many toppings available and would enjoy the experience so check it out. read more

It's 8:30pm on a Thursday night and there's a line out the door. A group of 8 walk out as the line is moving way too slow for their liking. It moved fast enough. We tried the Wild Mint and Pecan Roca Affogato. They're out of the roca so we substitute toffee bits. Even though we added the toffee as they were out of the roca, we got charged for the add. We get called back over to the register and told we weren't charged the correct price. Thinking we overpaid I was willing to just let it go and said "oh it's okay" to which we were told they didn't charge us ENOUGH and we needed to pay more. It was incredibly awkward (the cashier seemed uncomfortable doing it and the other employee was the one making her do this) and in poor taste, all for an extra $2. I heard about Lu & Aug's opening in Ardmore, so I decided to stop off and check it it, today. When I came in, I was greeted by a long line, but that also means their products must be popular. Oddly enough, the staff took the orders of the five or six people ahead of me, but then stopped to make everyone else's order while I waited in line. Lu & Aug's has a ton of options. Soft serve, leveled ice cream, folded ice cream and ice cream Ruth espresso. Tons of toppings (each are 50 cents except chocolate and rainbow sprinkles), too. However, there were items on the overhead menu that did not include a description. How am I supposed to know what "Sunrise in Cali", "What's Poppin'" or "Glam Jam" is? I could ask, but it would take a while to ask for each flavor. Once I was helped, after waiting for about five minutes, I ordered the Muddy Moose. It took a little while to come out, but I was very happy with how it tasted. A base if chocolate ice cream with pieces of peanut butter cups, crushed chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter during, which was topped with pretzel. Really sweet, but a good overall combination of flavors. There is a wide variety of seating options here. Everything is very clean, too. Also, the bathroom is very large here with cool paintings and photos - clean as well. Altogether, Lu & Aug's is a nice ice cream place. It's a great addition to the Ardmore and Lower Merion area. It's pretty good soft serve ice cream. A plain Cup is $5, a sundae is $9. For the sundae, they put really minimal stuff on top of a lot of soft serve. I probably won't be back as it's just not worth the price. If I do come back; I'll just get a plain cup with sprinkles. The soft serve is fine enough (it's just from a machine), but the toppings are lacking and not thought out (for example, the chocoholic comes with a brownie that they microwave to scalding temperature and burn the core to a rock hard crisp).
