I've visited this location and the Germantown location before, so reviewing as a repeat customer. The coffee here is fantastic. Seating is relatively abundant, outlets slightly less so. Wi-fi is strangely frustrating to connect to, as the confirmation portal seems pretty latent. Led to some frustration, but once online, things were good to go here. I visited Char & Stave mid-morning on a weekday to give their coffee a try. It wasn't crowded, there was plenty of seating available, and there was no line at the counter. I ordered the current Cereal Milk Latte offering, which was Cocoa Pebbles. The prices of their standard coffee drinks are generally in line with the other higher end coffee shops in the area, although for the specialty lattes they only offer a 12 ounce size and the prices are premium. There was a pretty limited selection of pastries, and nothing grabbed me, so I stuck to just coffee. The barista was friendly and my drink was prepared quickly. I was a bit confused by the Lucky Charms marshmallows on top since the current flavor was Cocoa Pebbles, but I'll never turn down more sweetness in my latte. The drink was good - flavorful, smooth, not too acidic. Not on the sweeter end of the latte spectrum, but as someone with a major sweet tooth I still enjoyed it. I took my drink to go, but there was plenty of seating, and the inside seems comfortable for both singles and groups. They had a list of upcoming events ranging from Quizzo to a poetry open mic night to Dungeons & Drafts. They also have a large retail section with whiskey, spirits and some other merch. I'm not writing about the atmosphere/ambiance/attitude of the staff, but solely about the quality of the coffee. The Char and Stave coffee is out-of-this world amazing. The best single-beans are Gugi Gugi from Ethiopia, with its blueberry and cacao notes that it so strongly every single time (it is so distinctive, you could pick Gugi Gugi out of any line-up of brews); their Really Good Decaf blend is mind-blowing, it will change your mind about decaf. (I also love the Black Voodoo, it feels like you've fallen into a molasses pit, or are getting a big slice of flourless chocolate cake like they made 20 years ago. What I love about Char and Stave is that their single-beans have so much personality, this is really a love letter to biodiversity, because the beans ) My only interactions so far have been buying their coffee, to make at home, or sometimes I might grab a cup (for instance a cup of Really Good Decaf after a concert at the Aardmore Music Hall). They roast to perfection. I live an hour away. This place is *so* worth it. If you are not a coffee snob, you might not immediately understand why this place is essential, unique, and why there's no other place like it around. If you are a coffee snob, just be careful not to hoard too much coffee -- leave some for the rest of us!! read more

I've been lucky enough to be visiting Char and Stave since their inception. It's exactly what the block of Rittenhouse Place needed- great location, great coffee, great service, and the best aesthetic! One could say, Char and Stave is trouble for me, as I work on the same block. TAKE MY MONNNNNNEY!!! Julian is SO sweet- my husband I have gotten to know him very well and he's always friendly and helpful when I'm curious about trying something new. I typically opt for a vanilla latte with almond milk, but once in awhile I switch it up if they feature a snazzy seasonal beverage or their infamous cereal milk! Yes, you heard correctly, CEREAL MILK! Said milk changes every few months, and can be added to any beverage. Today I got the almond cookie latte and it's phenomenal in flavor not to mention it's topped with sprinkles. Sprinkles are like sunshine- they just make your day! (lol) Unfortunately, for me, I have not had a chance to try their cocktails, as I never stick around the area later than 3:30-4pm but maybe I will get to try an espresso martini at some point. The only downside is, it gets verrry busy! This is definitely a go to spot for coffee date, business meeting, or if you need a place to station yourself for the work day, but just know, you might struggle to find a table or seat. Found this place by reading an article on Philly area Coffee shops in the Philadelphia inquirer. Nice size shop for a coffee shop in a quaint plaza. Unique theme, whiskey and coffee. Menu is full of beverages, Espresso drinks, iced cocktails and cocktails. There are some pastries available but not much in the way of food. Staff were pleasant, sociable, attentive and made us feel right at home. The tables were all occupied probably with regulars but there was space at the counter. I enjoyed a specialty Latte with rosemary syrup and cranberry, asked them to tone it down so it would not be too sweet and I was delighted! My husband went for a cocktail because it was five o'clock somewhere; the cocktail of the week had hot honey whiskey, Blueberry syrup and lemon, delicious! Not only was he pleasant and knowledgeable, but he basically held my hand through my whiskey tasting, and it made a huge difference in my Char and Stave experience. He was able to help me select whiskeys based on my preferences and even had out of the box suggestions. His recommendations were so brilliant, that I ended up buying the whiskeys he chose for me! If you are unsure and can't understand why a cocktail or glass of whiskey is necessary at 9am in the morning...I cant help you. I've been coming here for about a year and a half since I've moved out of the city. I often find myself driving 20-30 minutes out of my way to come here as opposed to the coffee chains. What a great find! I've been a fan of the coffee/brewery trend, but this is the first coffee/whiskey place I've visited. Wish I could transport it back home! The Tall Man and I went on a weekday afternoon and discovered a quiet place with low conversation and not too many laptops. It had a bit of a speakeasy vibe with all the hardwood and metal accents. We had our little one with us, which seemed ok for daytime but it was a quieter, more elevated atmosphere than your typical cafe so I would probably leave the baby at home for happy hour and after. I was most intrigued by their specialty lattes and non-alcoholic coffee- or tea-based cocktails. Kudos to them for offering many choices for the dry crowd. I got the Dirty Little 5-Spice latte with almond milk, which was a fragrant twist on a more typical holiday spiced latte. It was rather expensive pre-vegan milk surcharge, but pretty special as well. The Tall Man got the Rittenhouse Manhattan, which he enjoyed. He also got a pour of their sugar cane rum, in case it might be similar to rhum agricole (sugar cane rum we've tasted in Guadeloupe), but it was more run of the mill so next time he would stick to a cocktail or a whiskey instead. Service was cool and casual in a good way. I would definitely return to experience their nighttime vibe and try a different latte or mocktail. read more

This is our new go-to cafe since moving back to the area in March. The lattes here are incredible. My husband gets the barrel-aged espresso in his oat milk latte, which has a fun and funky taste - definitely worth a try. I stick to the regular espresso oat milk latte. We've been a few other coffee places, since moving back, and none of them compares to Char & Stave, in terms of quality. We often walk here from our apartment with our personal cups, but it's super nice to get a mug to stay when we have time to chill and people watch. The room has plenty of comfortable seating. I love the concept and how they seamlessly blend them together. $7 for a whiskey smash latte was steep but they make their own syrups in house and it was a super unique drink. I highly recommend getting a speciality latte here but if you'd prefer a regular one that will run you the standard $4. Service was super helpful and the vibe of the shop was so warm and welcoming. My only comment would be that this place is definitely more of a relaxing, slow paced vibe. Often times the baristas are chatting with each other or customers and the service can feel a bit lax. If you are in a rush and there is a line, might not be the best spot for you. This place also serves as a local spot for people to come and work for the day. So depending on the time, it is sometimes hard to find a table to sit at to enjoy your coffee with all those posted up on their laptops. Overall, love this place and will keep coming back.
