Went there for the first time. I was skeptical that they would not be that great having grown up in Maryland near Baltimore and enjoying steamed crabs for years. I've tried a place in Gainesville, VA a few years ago and they were not good. To my surprise the crabs were great, hush puppies did well. The oysters were kind of bland but still ok. Basically, the service was good. The benches and tables are really not sturdy enough when you use a crab mallet but next time I think I'll bring them home to eat. This place seems the definition of a hole-in-the-wall in terms of restaurants. The food was good, but loses points for presentation and doesn't make up for it with being cheap. I got a crab cake sandwich, which I really enjoyed. The decor inside was kinda cheesy in a good way. The sides were decent. The workers who bring the food are great, super nice but lady upfront is not kind. Also if people come to your place for blue crab, give them blue crab don't say "they are spoken for." I'm here at your restaurant now, you're saving them for a friend? We even asked the other workers and they said there's plenty of blue crab left and even said yea we have some for reservations but there's a lot left. Then the guy and the lady at the register said you should call, well we did multiple times and it goes straight to voicemail and guess what? Voicemail is full. I like this place and have been here few times, but the two older people who seem like they're in charge of the place don't have a slight clue about basic customer service. The crabs must be delicious, but I had the award-winning fried chicken which didn't disappoint! Onion rings were yummy with just the right amount of batter, and the broccoli slaw was refreshing. My sister has the fried clam strips which she liked. On a rainy Thursday night it was a full house in the indoor section around back (go left, then left after placing your order at the register area). We ate at Lowrey's Crab Shack on 4/14/2014. Wife had pealed and deveined shrimp with corn fritters, hush puppies, and a side salad. Shrimp were nicely seasoned. Hush puppies were delicious. Corn fritters were excellent. I had the 3 piece fried chicken with potato salad and corn fritters. I had a leg, breast and thigh. The chicken was moist, very crispy. Best fried chicken I've ever had. The corn fritters were delicious. The potatoe salad was very tasty, maybe needed a little salt. My only real negative comment is that the corn fritters don't come with a sauce. They are dusted with powder sugar. Personally, I would like a remulaude sauce on the side of the corn fritters. I was surprised that they don't make one for the PO-Boys they serve. If you really need crabs this place is okay. Service and staff were friendly and attentive but sadly to my crabby palette the crabs were not the best. It's crazy to even say this, but the BEST fried chicken you'll ever taste happens to be a this lil crab shack in Hamilton, VA! Oh, and the dozen of blue crabs I devoured were pretty darn good too! I've been to many crab shacks, houses, restaurants, etc in northern VA and this place is hands down the best for both crabs and chicken. The spice used is not too salty and the crabs are steamed to perfection. And the hospitality was wonderful. I'm looking forward to trying their other menu items real soon! read more

Great place to enjoy see food with the family specially during warm season. Not so much of a fancy dinning experience, so don't expect table service. It is more of a self served hidden gem. We wanted to take Mom to eat crabs for Mother's Day and picked out this cool spot. If you're going for waffle fries with fried cod or fried catfish then sure, do it. Maybe even add in some soft serve ice cream. But I don't recommend the crabs or oysters. Oysters: They were jar oysters that were placed on cosmetic oyster shells. If they're going to do this, it should be mentioned otherwise it feels fraudulent when we're expecting fresh raw oysters. Crabs: These were subpar even if we had been at an all-you-can-eat place. But we paid per crab. $70 a dozen = $105 for 18 light crabs = felt like a rip off. Like all places, must call in ahead of time to guarantee. It's crab season. So if there are light crabs with shriveled up meat then I would expect cheaper prices. Water cup: had some white substance, what looked like caulking or something, stuck inside my cup. I only noticed it when I got to the bottom. Not cool. They brought me a new cup but no apology and the new water tasted like soda. There are shortcuts being taken and not in a good way. If you eat seafood here be prepared for Lowry's revenge. Ordered the steamed seafood sampler and ate a shrimp or two. Then had a clam or two. Then noticed alongside the clams were oysters emanating an awful odor. Upon further inspection I realized the oysters were oozing something green and that smelled so unlike any oyster I've ever eaten. And thank goodness I've had a lot of seafood in my lifetime to know that oysters that don't open when steamed are likely spoiled. I had half of a large container of oysters, not a single oyster opened and it smelled like straight rot. Not the sea. Not the ocean. Not a pleasant but strong fish or shellfish smell. This was straight unnaturally rotted and so horrendous. I immediately took the food from my daughter and husband and had to trash it for fear of food poisoning. Now we all await what we now call in our house "Lowry's Revenge". Hope it does not happen. It is one thing to start preparing the oysters, realize their bad and then let the customer know they have to sub something. But no, Lowry's either served me rotted food OR their cooks did not even realize that the oysters were spoiled and not safe to eat. These oysters weren't just slightly still closed and openable. These were immovable and coated in green stinky and chunk liquid This is a shame because this place is super cute. Super affordable. And has an awesome picnic area. Went to Lowry's tonight after reading a NOVA Foodie post on FB. Before we went I noticed the reviews have been both positive and negative. I have a great experience that started with a relaxing drive through Virginia backroads. Once arrive I was pleasantly surprised to fined the Lowry's roadside restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. We went on a HOT Memorial day weekend but we arrived at a great time (7pm) to beat the rush and enjoy being outside. They have fans around the patio (loose gravel) with tables accompanied with umbrellas to block the sun. Now for the real reason for the post, the FOOD. We decided to share their snow & king crab legs platter (includes 2 clusters of snow and 1 cluster of king, hush puppies and 2 sides) and added the captain player (1/2 lb of king). We included the cauliflower and broccoli which was awesome. The order was a perfect amount for the two of us! Food was phenomenal and backed by Sharon's service (event though it was a holiday and we had to wait a little bit longer than normal for our food, Sharon rocked it). read more

This is not a place to go if you are looking for value of dollar to food. We sat outside where there was no spraying (like mosquito squad) so you are battling flies at your food and getting bit by mosquitoes. We ordered the hush puppy appetizer. They were not served with butter. Not that it mattered since they were cold. Our entrees were the 2 piece chicken, lobster roll, and admirals king crab. The sides were potato salad, fries, corn nuggets, and crab chips. The one thing they did right was not over season the lobster and let it shine on its own. The king crab was literally 1 leg for $39.99! I don't mean one cluster- 1 LEG! There is no way 1 leg was a pound when 2 clusters are a pound on average. The chicken (which takes 20 minutes to cook) was mediocre at best. It was bland like they only dredged in flour and no seasoning. The crab chips are kettle potato chips sprinkled with old bay. The corn nuggets are no sweet and taste like a slightly thick creamed corn. That is $100 charged but it looks like a stop through the drive thru just for food after this. Love this place! Been going here since I was little! One of my favorite family owned restaurants!

Paid for a dozen crabs and got 8..... We ordered 1 dozen of crabs ($85) 1 appetizer of cocktail shrimp ($10) and 1 appetizer of coconut shrimp ($10). The shrimp were both good, and for the most part, our crabs were decent. HOWEVER, there were 4 crabs that were either empty or smelled repulsive when opened. We ate the other 8 crabs but brought the 4 crabs back to the front to let them know and see if we could get them replaced (which is extremely typical of any seafood/crab house). The boy working at the counter was confused as to why I was questioning them and said "they smell bad because they are crabs". Well, crabs shouldn't smell like ammonia....he brought them to the back to see if they could do anything about it and he came back out bringing us the bad crabs back and said they can't replace them and that they are fine. So again, we mentioned they smell, they are empty, etc and he took them back again to the kitchen. Then he returned without the crabs saying they aren't replacing them. So now, we paid a ridiculously high price for a dozen and only got 8 out of it. What a rip off. When we were walking out, we noticed everyone left their trash at the table (as the boy went around with a bus boy tub) so we did the same. The same boy abruptly cut us off and told us to clean up our crab paper and utensils... I would be fine with that if that's what was anticipated or there was a sign or we were previously told, but you could tell he was purposely being rude about it.. Will not be back especially considering the "customer service" we received, the unwillingness to even send a manager to talk to us, overpriced, bussing our own table, AND the spoiled seafood. read more

Made a 25 mile trip to Landry's only to find out walk in were not welcomed. Wow!! Was told I should have checked the website. How often to you check a restaurants website before going when you know their hours? Never!! Unbelievable. A low class operation. Never again! read more
