An order includes 2 pieces, each of them a breast & sort of a small leg attached (yes, that sounds weird but it's the best description I can come up with). An order comes with mashed potatoes & gravy on the side + collard greens. We each took one piece of chicken home for a second meal. When you hear upscale Southern cuisine, you're instantly intrigued, right? I definitely was and couldn't wait to try Georgia Brown's for date night. While our server was great and very attentive, unfortunately, the food left a lot to be desired. For the evening we tried the Devil Shrimp which is crab stuffed shrimp that came with spinach and mac & cheese. While the stuffed shrimp were delicious the mac and cheese not so much. Both of which were $30-some dollar entrees. The $65 jumbo lump crab cake and $41 devil shrimp were completely not worth it. The best thing was the aoili sauce that came with the crab cake. Georgia Brown's is a true soulfood gem! I stopped by with some of my colleagues and we had a grand ole time! For my drink, I ordered a thirst quenching Southern style sweet iced tea. It truly soothed my soul and tasted like pure bliss. For my appetizers I ordered calamari and also fried chicken livers. Unfortunately, the calamari did not make the photoshoot! It was simply too delicious! The fried chicken livers were like dynamite with each bite! So flavorful, especially dipping into the honey mustard! The seafood penne was filled with scallops, shrimp, and crab meat! Wow! A medley of scrumptious goodness! Hints of lemon juice? olive oil, and other goodness. I see why reservations are needed and the line was long! I heard about this place on TV and never thought I'd make it. On a visit to DC, our friends had made us reservations. We had a late afternoon reservation and that was perfrct timing as the crowd showed up shortly after. The atmosphere was nice with some old school RnB playing in the vackground. It was a bit loud which made us speak a bit louder than preferred. The drinks were great! She had the peach martini and I had the old fashioned after i had my usual. For appetizers we shared the fried green tomatoes. They were good. Others at the table also had them and enjoyed them. Our entrees were excellent! I had the lambchops at med well temp with greens and mashed yams. Wow! She had the jerk catfish with greens and mac n cheese! We both enjoyed our meals. Nene was our hostess. I was recommended GB by a family member who loved their happy hour specials. I visited during restaurant week, so I tried to give as much slack as I could to the employees. It was PACKED with people and good conversations The good: FOOD. The food here saved this review ten-fold. I had the seafood penne and it was delicious. My friends enjoyed their meals as well. The bad: Slow service. We had a reservation for 7:45 and didn't sit until 8:20. Once seated, everything took forever. The pacing was awful so there were lots of moments of us just sitting around. And I'm not sure why because I never saw a hectic employee running around. I just believe everything was slow, which again, might've just been because of restaurant week. Wow I haven't been here in probably a decade. It has definitely changed, but the food was still good. It's not unlimited brunch, but it is a four course meal for $60 which isn't a bad deal at all, because theyll give you a box for what you can't finish. The live jazz started at 10:45am or so and they played for a bit while we were there from 10-12. They took awhile to bring us the main courses, which was interesting because the restaurant only had maybe one other table occupied. Cornbread for the table: I wasn't a big fan of these, they were a bit dry/hard. Omelette: while we were waiting for food we went to the make-your-own omelette station. Not too many protein options but you can actually add as many ingredients as you want so it was nice. The omelette itself was delicious! Really liked how they made it. Appetizer: I got the fried green tomatoes-- the bed of tomato and onion salad underneath wasn't that great. And I thought the tomato itself also was a bit on the hard side. The batter was super thick. Main: I got the grilled catfish but I'm pretty sure they brought me the blackened one. It was really good. Fish was moist and flaky, and I liked the bed of peas and the scoop of grits. It didn't feel super heavy. Desserts: for 6 of us they brought 2 plates of 3 small slices of dessert to share. The pecan pie was ok-- more nuts than filling but appreciated that it wasn't overly sweet; the sweet potato cheesecake was my favorite--very mild, and I liked the texture; the lemon cake was a bit dry and gritty... Hostess quickly accommodated pairing two separate party reservations, so we could sit as a group, together. Waitress was not the best. One bottle of water for six people, and you don't bother to periodically stop by to refill. We had to ask her twice for more water. Asked about the spice level on a dish and she stated that she didn't know what I considered spicy. What kind of response is that? Shouldn't a waiter know if a dish is mild, moderately or very spicy? Needless to say, I stuck with an entree I didn't have to ask about. Chicken and waffles were really good. With us being a large group, 20% gratuity was added, but we agreed that she wasn't deserving. This is a Thanksgiving edition review. For Thanksgiving this year we chose Georgia Brown's to dine. Booking reservations on Open Table was easy. We were seated in a timely manner. The normal restaurant menu is unavailable for holidays. There's a three course holiday menu available to choose from. For appetizers are table picked cranberry meatballs, fried devil eggs, and fried green tomatoes. The highlight of the appetizers was the cranberry meatballs. For entrees, we ordered the fried turkey option (dressing, collard greens, mash potatoes, and cranberry sauce), the halibut, and the vegan option. The dressing was the best but it's a limited portion. The restaurant is upscale with an intimate dining experience. The only negative was the service was slow. The kitchen became overwhelmed and it slowed the time to receive your meal. Overall it was a 3.5 stars. Tips for holiday dining: Book reservations on Open Table at least 3 weeks beforehand. We finished our meals and felt that the dishes were pretty standard. The seafood penne itself, the noodles I felt were too soft due to the sauce vs. being more al denté. I came here for the first time Saturday to celebrate one of my very good friend's birthday. We got there a bit after our reservation time, but were still seated very quickly after we got there. I had ordered the grilled red snapper with a side of rice and salad while my friend order the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and greens. I will say our food came out very quickly after we placed it, but I had asked for grilled fish and my waiter brought out fried fish instead. I hated to be that person, but I had to ask him to send it back which he did. It seemed to me, that he was overwhelmed by the tables he was serving, but I believe he was trying his best. It took almost a half hour before my food came out and it was definitely worth the wait. My friend let me try a bit of her fried chicken while I waited for my order. The chicken was good, crispy, and seasoned well. But, my fish!!! That was the real winner!! It was fresh, marinated well, and full of flavor. It was also cooked to perfection. It wasn't overdone, and just how I envisioned. After we finished eating, it took a while before we received the check. I noticed other people were celebrating their birthdays and had their waiters bring out a small cake with a lit candle. My friend and I kept waiting for her's to come out, but it never did. Finally, my friend asked if she would be getting a cake and our waiter admitted he forgot and that he'd bag that up for her to take. Smh. This was my second visit to Georgia's Brown, the first time was 6 years prior, and I couldn't wait to share it with my parents, remembering a delicious, homey, southern meal and the friendliest staff. For this trip, the experience wasn't quite the same. The restaurant felt more upscale than homey, the staff was polite, but it wasn't the warm welcome I remembered (perhaps just a casualty of reminiscence). The prices doesn't reflect the quality of food I was expecting. Plates run around 30 dollars, sides are 10 bucks, cocktails 20 dollars, beer about 8 dollars. We got seated but they forget to let the server know we were in their section, which caused a 15 minute delay. We were chilling and engulfed in conversation so we weren't annoyed. It was a simple environment with good lighting, plants, and warm colors. The servers were very busy with two tables of 10+ people. They seemed needy and very rude to them. So kudos to the waiters for keeping their cool. We were able to chat about all sorts of things related to the area since we weren't from here and they had some suggestions for what to eat. We started off with dessert first, because life is short, and we went with the Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie. That was the highlight of the meal. It was flawless. From there, it was a drop off. The ambiance includes dim, yet warm lighting. It's perfects for groups, special occasions and date night. Each time I've visited the service is top tier. It is a bit competitive for reservations especially on the weekends. There's valet parking though you may luck up on parking nearby. Uber or carpool is recommended. The bar area has high top seating and can be quite crowded in the evenings. Often occupied after happy hour patrons and guests waiting on their tables. The ambience is beautiful, but the wait time for food is unacceptable, especially since we were the first party to dine upon opening. After receiving our food, my food was barely warm, while the lamp chips were hot. The appetizer was not delicious, and the waitress was not friendly. I am not able to recommend this restaurant at this time. There are better restaurants in the area that have great ambience, cheaper prices, and hot food. I will start by saying service here is wonderful. From being greeted immediately and kindly by the bartender, to the host and then server, I give it a 5/5. I had to wait for the entire party to arrive before being seated so I just waited at the bar. The bartender, Josh, was great, quick and funny. He made my old fashioned exactly how I like it (and I'm picky with mine)! Because our entire party was not yet present and a little late, we still weren't able to be seated when all but one of the party arrived. However, despite being late, the restaurant was so accommodating to still hold the reservation and table. After we were finally seated, we were well taken care of by our server, Stefany. I appreciated how descriptive she was in giving us more information about certain dishes and giving us recommendations; she even went as far as providing a sample of a side dish to someone in our party to try it before ordering. Like I said, the service was great! For my appetizer, I had the soup of the day (I forget what it was called; not pictured). It wasn't great. I think that the roasted chicken and greens in the group were good, however the broth itself was over seasoned with black pepper. While the server told me that it would be on the more spicy/peppery side, I did not expect it to be that heavy to the point where it threw off the entire soup. For the entree, I selected the pork chop but substituted the candied yams for macaroni and cheese. The best part of the dish were the brussels sprouts which were cooked and flavored well. The sauce used on the pork chop was not the best, I expected something more than something so close to bbq sauce. The pork chop itself was good, seasoned, juicy and fairly easy to cut even after requesting it to be cooked well done. The macaroni and cheese had significant potential because it was yummy, however very salty. It was so salty that I felt I had to drink some water after each bite. Between the soup and entree, it wasn't really doing it for me. While I have heard great things about this restaurant, I was disappointed in my meal experience. I might have to come back to try different dishes because the ones I selected just weren't that good. I hope that brunch is better. I will mention that I tried a friend's catfish fingers and it was delicious! Might've been the best thing I had that night. Paying was VERY easy and convenient. They had a QR code on the table where you could select the option to pay the entire bill, split the bill or evenly divide the bill. I really liked this feature because it eased splitting checks where you could pay by guest/chair down to each ordered item. I wish more places would offer payment options like this. Ambiance was classic. You could dress up or appear more casual. It would be a great spot for an intimate group dinner or date. The vibe and decor was chic. Parking was easy. They offer valet parking but I parked at a nearby garage (1 block away) that was $10. It wasn't awful at all but I also went during off-peak hours. My friend was waiting for me at the bar and as he closed out, the bartender was so kind as to ask me if I wanted to get a drink at the bar before we were seated at our table because there were still a few minutes left before happy hour ended. I appreciated that and the peach martini was tasty! I decided to try their restaurant week menu option and for my first course I had the jumbo friend shrimp and it was delicious. The perfect amount of breading and the spicy coleslaw was a nice added touch. For our entrees we had the buttermilk fried chicken and the beef short rib. They both were delicious. I was a big fan of the fried chicken. It was most and the collard greens were really good and accompanied the chicken and mashed potatoes well. The beef short rib was so tender and the veggies and potatoes were very flavorful and well seasoned. While the starter and entree were delicious the dessert was a bit disappointing. Both the bread pudding and cobbler tasted as if they had the same base with different canned fruits and ice cream over it. I was a fan at all but the ice cream wasn't bad. Visiting dc for a quick weekend trip. Wanted to experience something different and not typical in DC so saw some good reviews for GB and made reservations for a Friday night at 8:30. The start was very slow. We were promptly seated on time but waited several minutes before our waitress came to greet us. Approx. 8 minutes. For more clarity we were seated at 835 and didn't get our drinks u til 9:06. We had to repeat our order twice to the waitress. Once for our entrees and another for the dessert we had already ordered. The food did not disappoint. Even with the slow inattentive service I have no complaints about the food. We had the fritto mixto fresh light battered seafood and veggies. Green fried tomatoes were firm and tasty. Fried chicken plate 3.5/5, chicken was seasoned well and fried good. Mashed potatoes could use help. Gravy was a nice addition. Devil shrimp was good. You get 3 large stuffed shrimp. It's basically mini crab cakes on top of shrimp 4/5. The drinks were strong which we never mind especially having to wait more that 30 mins for them. We got the Carolina gumbo for our starter and my boyfriend who's from Mississippi approved the gumbo. It was very flavorful. The omelette station was great, it was one of the best omelettes I've had in a while. I got the brisket hash for my entree and it was pretty good. The brisket was very tender, although about 1/3 of the meat was just fat that I had to remove. My boyfriend's steak was overcooked and they replaced it quickly. Georgia Brown's is a DC institution that focuses on fine low-country/ southern cuisine, incorporating cooking associated with coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia. The meals comprise a rich abundance of seafood and rice. It has gone through many hands through the years and is currently black-owned. I am so glad we made reservations because the place was packed. It was their 30th anniversary this year, and several celebrities have popped in to participate in this iconic food. Even though you might catch an actress here or there (I spotted one during my visit), the real star is the food! Here is what I enjoyed during my visit: Deviled Eggs topped with caviar "Devil" Shrimp Brioche Bread Pudding Banana Pudding Smoked Turkey Collard Greens (not pictured) Peach Martini (not shown) I realize all the foods I picked to eat had the word "devil," but the food was heavenly! Of course, the caviar added a bit of salt to the deviled egg. Don't be imitated by caviar. The devil shrimp is crab stuffed with sauteed spinach, mac & cheese, smoked pepper, and butter sauce. The portion was just enough. We were full, but we still made room for dessert! The warm bread pudding was incredible! The banana pudding could have been more pretty, but it tasted so good. My favorite thing was the smoked collard greens; it was superb. It was so good; I wanted to drink the potlikker. I would like to start by saying the staff and service were great even when they were clearly busy. The host was able to get me a seat on a busy Wednesday night when restaurant week was happening and they had live jazz without a reservation and that was greatly appreciated. It was quite lively with lots going on, some may say noisy but it depends on what you like. Once the jazz came on I thought the ambiance was great. However, I was not impressed by the food especially at that price point. The deviled eggs you can make at home. The celery concoction that the eggs lay on left a weird taste in my mouth. The mashed potatoes and fried chicken were very bland and there wasn't salt or pepper on the table to try and make it better. The greens were ok. Finished with the peach cobbler which also wasn't anything to write home about. I didn't order a drink but the cocktails were quite pricey. I would come here again maybe for a drink at the bar and to listen to music but the food itself wasn't good enough to lure me back for that. read more
