my good friend brought me here for an early birthday tea and we had a wonderful two hours at this cute little tea house in pacifica. she made reservations in advance, which is a good thing b/c this cafe was packed on a saturday afternoon, with some guests waiting outside, hoping to score a table.
we shared the queen's tea ($27.95), which included:
1. 2 sandwiches - we chose their daily special, a curry chicken salad sammy, as well as the smoked turkey & dijon mustard sammy. they were served with white bread on one side, wheat bread on the other, each sammy cut into 4 triangles. the sammies were tasty, but definitely on the small side (about 2 bites each piece).
2. coleslaw - very, very small portion, but a tasty, healthy, homemade mix of slaw salad to offset all of the sweets.
3. green salad - small portion of mixed greens with a bit of balsamic dressing on the side. another nice healthy addition to the tea service.
4. scone w/fruit preserves and devon cream - their signature black currant scone, served warm, was soft and tasty, not hard and dry like most other scones. i really enjoyed this with a bit of raspberry preserves and devon cream, aka clotted cream, very traditional topping for an english scone.
5. crumpet w/lemon curd - crumpet was brought towards the end of our tea since they said they had to warm it up, but i couldn't figure out why since it tasted like a regular thomas' english muffin to me. it wasn't very big, so split into two, we only had a couple bites each. it paired well with the lemon curd and fruit preserves though.
6. fresh fruit - seasonal assorted fruit, including berries, melon, and pineapple
7. petit four - brought towards the end of the meal, we were given a choice of over a dozen mouthwatering petit fours and oversized truffles...it was hard to choose just one! but we ended up going with the dark chocolate, coconut, macadamia nut truffle which was deep, dark, and almost orgasmic! i loved this combo!
8. shortbread tea biscuit - a tiny biscuit, even for one person, i don't know how i managed to split this into two pieces for the both of us...it was just ok. would have liked this to be bigger so that i could actually taste it
9. bottomless pot of tea - we chose the decaf lady grey which was so wonderfully fragrant with notes of bergamot and citrus. the tea pot was fairly large and we managed to finish almost two full pots of tea!
since we were still a bit hungry, we ended up ordering 2 more sandwiches a la carte ($7.90 for both), and tried the branston pickle chutney & cheese and chicken & asparagus sammies. we were told that the branston pickle was very british, and rightfully so as we didn't quite know what this was, nor could we identify the filling between the bread, but it was very tasty and i would definitely order it again! the chicken and asparagus was just ok, as the aspargus was a bit limp and soft, not the usual crunchy texture that i've come to expect from fresh asparagus.
when we'd finished our second round of sandwiches, our waitress surprised me with a bonus petit four in honor of my birthday, including a candle in the middle. so sweet!
overall, we had a wonderful girls-only afternoon here with a blend of sweet and savory treats in a cute little tea house. i'd definitely recommend this for a small group of girls looking for a proper afternoon, english tea.
note that parking is quite limited in front of the shoppe, right along highway 1, so be careful getting in and out since this is a heavily populated strip of the highway. also, the single unisex restroom is outside, around the corner, and downstairs from the main dining room. read more
