And just when I thought no place could top my #1 cupcake shop ever, I found Love At First Bite!!!!!!!!!! On my way to class this weekend looking all over the place for parking I see a sign on the sidewalk that caught my eye and occupied my brain. I've had this place bookmarked FOREVER and it finally has placed it's self in my presence. I could hardly concentrate in my cooking class because all I could think about were Cupcakes. This cute place is located at the top of a little cool outdoor space reminding me of a smaller version of Gharedeli Square. Don't be discouraged, go on up :) The variety of cupcakes placed for viewing is like being in heaven. The scents are to die for. Each individual cupcake with a cute decoration of it's own. This place is not that good for a shop that only sells cupcakes and cookies. I mean they're good and all, probably beats the cupcakes at the supermarket (I find that the icing is a clear reflection of the caliber of a cupcake.), but for about 2.75, do yourself the favor and skip dessert. The cookies are average also. They're decent, but not worth the fat intake and cost. I mean if you have to have a cookie, I'd rather opt for the double chocolate at Cheeseboard (unfortunately they're not always available). Teacake also wins in the cookie dept too. During my first time here, I originally came to buy cupcakes for my ex and I. We ended up not meeting up, so I left them both (green tea and some super chocolatey one) at his front door. It was also the occasion of one of my best friend's nuptials, but macking on a whole gang of their wares didn't hurt matters at all. The ginger babycakes are the absolute best - Lemoncello cream cheese frosting and moist, moist, moist ginger cake! Shut up! You just shut the hell up these are so damn good! Also the frosting on the pistachio cupcake is insane (it's nuts...) and it tastes like almost pure sweetened pistachio butter. Oh my fricking god. A lemon and a chocolate chocolate were also very good. Arranging to buy them in mass quantity for an event, though - a lot less sweet. I left about three messages, both with the voicemail and with a person, that went completely unanswered, which was really frustrating. And they don't offer any bulk discount - whether you're buying one, a dozen, a hundred or a thousand, you still have to pay the same price of about $3 each, which seems kind of a crazy ass policy for a bakery. The also charge separate fees for delivery, cake stand rental, a set up fee and other charges that almost equal the cost of about 100 cupcakes themselves - ouch. They were delivered promptly and in perfect condition with no issues and the day of everyone enjoyed them and loved them - they were the cutest things with a pistachio, candy flower or a piece of candied ginger on top. I would come here and eat eleven more cupcakes anytime I was in the area, but the next time I wanted a hundred I might go elsewhere to save myself the aggravation. I went in today to get a cupcake for my daughter's 2nd birthday pictures we were taking at the park and she grabbed them and put them in a box. I noticed one of them she grabbed was a bit flat and didn't have much sprinkles so I nicely asked if she could switch one of them because I was using it for a photo shoot. She rolled her eyes at me and gave me a very dirty look. I am normally very quiet and don't speak up when people are rude but I did because of what she did and the way she made me feel. This is my favorite cupcakery in Berkeley. The number one reason it is my favorite is because of the Matcha Green Tea cupcake that they make. It is delicious. It's hard to find matcha cupcakes - I only know of maybe two places that make it. (Because it's not a common cupcake flavor, I've had to satisfy my cravings by making my own matcha cupcakes - and let me tell you, matcha powder ain't cheap!) Matcha is a regular flavor at Love at First Bite, but if you don't get there early enough in the day, they might run out! I always get matcha when I'm in Berkeley, but on the occasions when they ran out, I've tried their other flavors and they were yummy too. The cake is the perfect consistency - not too moist and not too dry. The frosting is good too - a tad on the sweet side. On most of their cupcakes, they don't put on too much frosting - the frosting to cake ratio is low, which is what I prefer. The cupcakes are all so pretty! Their regular size cupcakes are on average about $3 a pop - ranging from $2.95 to $3.25. They also make mini cupcakes, in case you're feeling guilty about finishing a regular one by yourself. The space itself is small - there's a small bar if you want to eat your cupcake(s) there, and there are also some tables right outside of the capcakery. They have compostable forks and knives, if you want to split your cupcake with a friend. The name of this place is super adorable, the cupcakes are yummy and pretty, and they make matcha cupcakes!!! Super cupcakes from this cool little cupcake bakery hidden away in an alley of stores on Walnut St. Cupcakes were $2.50-2.75 each and moderately sized. But overall they tasted great and the cake was moist. Red velvet - one of my faves and probably one of the best red velevets I've had only next to Billy's Cupcakes in NYC. Regular white/yellow cake cupcakes - I really liked the taste of the white/yellow cake itself. Yum. The smores cupcake and the chocolate with chocolate frosting were good but I liked the above 2 more. Small pet peeve - the young woman working there touched a bunch of coins from a previous customer and then used her bare fingers to grab our cupcakes. So when I find a bakery I usually go in wanting to be overwhelmed with sugary goodness that I become awe struck at how unworthy I am as a baker. The cupcakes here looked too delicate to be eaten and too expensive to even want to buy one in the first place. Their selection wasn't too great, but maybe because I went on a Sunday but that's a lame excuse. If you're going to own a cupcake shop I expect at least a fairly wide selection. I was so excited to try Love at First Bite because I had heard great things, and I have made a hobby out of trying as many red velvet cupcakes as possible (and other cupcakes too...). I had a really good feeling walking in. The store is quaint and cute, and the cupcake display looked perfect. I had a hard time just choosing four flavors (which is what my boyfriend and I limited ourselves to), but in the end, we were able to make the decision, and I couldn't wait to take my first bite into each flavor. Mud Pie: "devil's food chocolate cake with whipped mocha frosting, topped with Oreo cookie crumbs." This was my favorite out of the ones that I tried, which was surprising because red velvet is usually my all-time favorite cupcake flavor and staple whenever I go to cupcakeries. The cake was the most moist of the four, the flavor was amazing, and frosting was spot on. Red Velvet: "very red red velvet cupcakes made with Guittard cocoa, topped with seductive cream cheese frosting." I was a little disappointed with the red velvet. I had the mini red velvet cupcake a few days before (because that was all that was left before closing on Valentine's Day), and the cake was very dry. The frosting, however, was quite good, but even that didn't make up for the dryness of the actual cake. The regular sized red velvet cupcake is a bit better than the mini version because the cake is more moist. It definitely is not the best red velvet cupcake I have had, but if I was craving one, this one would do in a pinch. Matcha Green Tea: "a delicate green tea cake made with ceremonial matcha tea, topped with matcha-infused whipped cream." This one was very interesting, and I was really excited to try it. They definitely do a good job making the cupcake taste like green tea. I can imagine some people absolutely loving it if you love green tea flavored everything. You definitely taste the matcha green tea (similar to a green tea Freddo from Peet's) and the frosting is infused with tea too. You can totally eat in the little plaza when it's a nice day. Otherwise, grab a sweet treat to-go and enjoy at home or on your way to class. For just a few bucks, you can get something that is waaaay better than a Starbucks pastry. For comparison purposes, these cupcakes are lighter and less dense than Sprinkles cupcakes. They are also not as sweet, which appeals to my Asian taste buds. After a stop at the cheeseboard for pizza, we came over to Love at First Bite for dessert! These cupcakes are amazing!!!!! We got the pretty in pink which has fresh strawberries running through the cupcake as well as the frosting; the ultimate chocolate for me which is chocolate with chocolate buttercream; my kiddo got the cookies and cream, and her friend got the lemon cupcake! My chocolate cupcake was divine--I had to do a happy dance when I bit into the cupcake! So satisfying. I tried the pretty in pink and the fresh strawberries in the cake and frosting just take it to the next level! All of us were extremely satisfied with our choices! I can walk to Love At First Bite and get a mouth-watering cupcake. It is just off one the semi-hidden Berkeley pathways that lead to Euclid Street up above. The courtyard is dog-friendly, so it is a lovely part of a gorgeous stroll through town. A few steps away is the original Pete's Coffee, and we all know that coffee and chocolate are magical together. Once I have two favorites in hand, I can sit at either location and enjoy a treat, wi-fi (at Pete's Coffee), whatever I'm reading, or just some lovely sunshine in the brick and wooden courtyard just outside Love at First Bite. My favorite flavor so far is the lemon pistachio, but I had the chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting today, and it was fabulous. Cupcakes are a great way to show a work friend or associate you are thinking of them for a birthday or encouragement. A post-it note with a few encouraging words is always appreciated, but why not present it with a cupcake? read more

Nothing but love for the wonderful service and delicious cake. They listened to all my random design requests for my son's birthday cake, and made it PERFECTLY. And delivered it to us. Due to my own shoddy planning, I didn't have space in the fridge to keep it so it lost a little bit of its structure once I drove to the park with it, so that's on me. But no one cared because it was still beautiful and my son adored it and it tasted amazing. Back when I was a student, I loved making the trek here for a tiny cupcake (I was on a budget!) It was so nice to return after years away to find this adorable spot much the same. Midday on a Saturday, they had a good stock of most flavors including some seasonal treats. We ordered 5 cupcakes so that we I could revisit old flavors and we could try some new ones as well. The Pretty in Pink (strawberry) and chocolate on chocolate tasted exactly as I remembered. I was so happy! We also tried the pistachio chocolate, coconut with chocolate cake, and the pineapple. All were delicious, though the pineapple was a little lacking in flavor and tartness. I believe that Love at First Bite is worthy of re-visiting, much like the Cheese Board and other Gourmer Ghetto favorites. read more

Stopped by to pick up some cupcakes after lunch. I had the lemon pistachio and matcha green tea. The lemon pistachio was good, but I am not sure I like that combination much. I think I would have enjoyed the chocolate pistachio more. The lemon wasn't overwhelming because I could still taste the pistachio flavor. I really enjoyed the frosting on this cupcake because it wasn't too sweet. The matcha green tea cupcake I had was really good. The flavor wasn't overpowering, the green tea and the matcha worked well together. The frosting on this cupcake was also very good. I like that the frostings weren't too thick or too sweet, which I find is the case more times than not. Also, the service I received here was good. I found that the people working here were nice and friendly. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself having difficulty choosing which cupcakes to get because there were so many flavors that looked good to me. I will be sure to be back to try more! read more

I found this place after reading it on hotmail.com - top 10 cupcake places. I was excited to check it out which I obviously did. Small, hidden place which is in a plaza. Great cupcakes and cookies! Prices are a bit pricy but overall it's all good. I'm from SoCal so I do miss my Sprinkles! read more

YUM-AH! Love at First Bite is a great place to swing by after you've picked up some Cheeseboard or Gregoire's around the corner, and you're itching for something sweet. Their Hummingbird and Matcha cupcakes are my personal favorites, especially if you're like me and prefer your baked goods on the less sweet side. They aren't overly sugary, the frosting is just right, and the cupcakes are still moist and light. The Hummingbird cupcake is a "Southern cake with bananas, pineapple & pecans, topped with cream cheese frosting", and tastes like a light banana bread with cream cheese frosting. The green tea matcha flavor of the Matcha cupcake is not very strong, but still, a nice try by a non-asian bakery :) read more
