Louis is the best Detroit style pizza in Metro Detroit. The crust is soft and doughy in the best way possible but still retains a nice crunch on the edge, the amount of cheese is generous, and the toppings are almost marinaded in the deliciously sweet pizza sauce. The result is a mouthwatering pie-like pizza that you're not getting anywhere else. If you want a lot of topping options, Louis isn't for you, it's far more limited than competitors, but I would argue they perfect the basics. The interior is charming in a straight out of the 1970s sort of way. The dining area can get pretty loud but the noise level is friendly and it's great being in a full restaurant surrounded by other people having a good time. There's a strong community feeling you don't get in sterile, corporate chains or local takeout spots. Despite my overwhelming praise for the pizzas they make, I also have to be honest. In the most charitable way possible, I hope that they can take some of their much deserved recent success and reinvest it back into the business because the front of house staff is regularly in over their heads. You can safely add 15 minutes to whatever time they quote you when placing your order. I had one order that was close to 30 minutes late and another that was missing all the extra sauces. As a result, pickup orders are very frustrating. The other criticism I have is that the parking lot is very crowded and routinely spills out into the surrounding streets. The lot size is limited, so not much they can do but they could work with the city to repave the lot and color label certain areas. I hope more people check out Louis. It is a gem. read more

We had been seeing this place pop up on my feed for a while, so when my friend group and I were in Detroit we wanted authentic Detroit style pizza, so this was the obvious choice. We made sure to get there right when they opened and there were already people trickling in and the waitress mentioned the locals come so regularly it's basically a habit at this point. We ordered three different pizzas for 4 people. They have premade options but you can also build your own with toppings. Everything was delicious and exactly what we expected from Detroit pizza. The inside has this really fun retro vibe with wine bottles decorations. It is a great place for any occasion, families, date night, a big friend group, or even coming alone for a bite. Loui's was a childhood favorite of mine, but I hadn't been in years! We ended up going on a Friday night, and even though the parking lot was absolutely packed, we ended up getting seated right away. I really appreciate the system they have where you can call in the order and drive up to pick it up. We ordered one cheese and one pepperoni for pickup. It took about 25-30 minutes as made fresh. They do ask your make and model of your car so that they can associate your order. When we got there, a server came out to our car without us having to call. She was super nice and let us know that they marked the pepperoni pizza with one slice on the corner on top. The people that ate the pepperoni pizza loved it and I enjoyed the cheese. I do feel like I wanted more dough and sauce ratio as I just felt it was mostly cheese. Maybe with more toppings the ratio changes. I did enjoy the flavor though! The larges feed a lot of people because the sizes per piece are hefty. The pizzas were also nice and hot, which is a huge bonus because we also had to bring the pizzas back to the house for others. I stopped in for lunch and was glad I did. I got lucky with the parking (it's limited) and found a booth immediately. After a couple minutes, my waitress came and greeted me and I had my food ordered within 5 minutes. As others have said, total blast from the past in here. Very unassuming interior which I can appreciate. My order came out in just under 30 minutes. It was not too busy when I was there, so just a head's up. I ordered a small meat lovers pizza. It was pretty fantastic. The exterior cheese crust was one of the best I've had. Plenty of toppings and lots of cheese. The structural integrity was a bit compromised (I get whey they give you a fork and knife, but Detroit Style pizza is meant to be raw dogged) which made a couple slices tough to eat. Also, these are big slices. I mustered through 3 before tapping out. Going back to the pizza, everything worked so well together and I liked the heavy amount of cheese on it. The bottom crust didn't have a ton of flavor, but that was not noticeable but for a few bites so not a big deal. Overall, I highly recommend Loui's. Better than Michigan and Trumbull (it's close) which many regard to be a top spot in and around Detroit. Very good experience. read more

Loui's is a medium-sized dining room with one TV and a laid back environment. It can get loud as there isn't much to soak up sounds, and voices bounce off the walls. No this isn't 1980, but the character remains on full display. A great Detroit style is a delicate balance of thick crispy crust and high quality ingredients. Where most others fall flat, Loui's gets it all right. Sure the pepperoni under the cheese is a little different, but that's more aesthetics. What most stands out is the cheese itself! Clearly the highest quality of Wisconsin brick on full display, and plenty of it. It's a distinct flavor that instantly dances on your tongue! Loui's is the real deal. Absolutely perfect Detroit style pizza with the best tasting crust. It's thick but cooked thoroughly where those caramelized edges have a nice crunch. We got our pizza with pepperoni, sausage, and mushroom. Their sauce is delicious and had the right amount on it. Now let's talk about the cheese. Our pizza had so much delicious cheese on it I thought I died and went to cheese heaven. Even splitting the small pizza my friend and I couldn't finish it and took half home. We also shared the small antipasto salad and that was another winner. Big chunks of meat and cheese and thick tomato slices. Their Italian dressing is in-house made and excellent. The ambience is old school Italian. Dark wood paneling, basement bar feeling with bottles of Chianti you can sign and they hang on the walls. This place is amazing and exceeded our expectations on a Saturday evening! We have bookmarked this place to get a bite of Detriot style pizza. The parking lot is challenging, and we park in the lot opposite to Loui's. As we entered the restaurant, we could feel a completely different vibe with a lot of bottles hanging on the ceiling and a lot of families having conversations and enjoying their food. It felt this was a great place. We were greeted and provided a seating. We ordered mediterranean salad, Cheese Ravioli, and then the pizza. The waitress was courteous and mentioned the full house and wait times. The food came in about 30 minutes. The salad was well prepared, and we all liked it. The cheese ravioli was perfectly made, and the sauce was just right and thoroughly enjoyable and must try. Then we got the pizza, perfect crispy and cheese, and we can feel the goodness in taste on every bite. This was one of the best pizzas we had in some time. Is this the right place? The neighborhood has more liquor stores than potholes and that is saying something. I didn't see any gun stores or strip clubs nearby but they wouldn't be out of place. The main dining room is big and welcoming. And come as you are. It's casual and homey. Against all my shrilling inner alarm bells and any inner judgment I thought I once had, I ordered a Long Island Iced Tea. It was awful and I didn't think that was possible until I remembered that you can order a "premium" Long Island (now THERE is an insane oxymoron) for an up charge. If you are as foolish as me, pay the extra couple of bucks. Never mind any of that. This place served us one of the BEST pizzas I have had in my life. We ordered the small Meat Lovers. It takes a half hour to bake and it's more than worth the wait. It is also as heavy as a tire so don't be fooled by its size. Two pieces is more than enough for a healthy appetite. It was heavy on the toppings but the superstar of the show is the crispy and ridiculously buttery outer crust. Next time just bring me that crust and wrap me inside of it. Every bite was crispy, buttery, and magical. Weirdly, the bottom crust was slightly undercooked. Whatever. Service was attentive and friendly. The staff has clearly seen it all and there's nothing they haven't seen before, good and bad. I am no expert in the different styles of pizza but I know what is good and what is great. We came here this weekend to finally try out the acclaimed pizza and reader, this is really as good as people say. There was a bit of a wait on a Saturday night, but less than 20 minutes and we were at a table. Expansive place inside, and the service was friendly and quick. We opted to share some antipasto and ordered a large meat lover's Detroit style pizza. The antipasto was quite solid and kept us busy while we waited for the pizza. The pizza was magnificent. The edges. Oh boy. Those edges. Delicious, perfect melty crunch. Comparison-wise, I think probably the best Detroit-style pizza we've had. The women at the counter who was handing over my food was a nice women no complaints. Pizza was good a little too doughy compared to other Detroit style pizzas I've had but still really good, I would say above average. The cheese bread was solid and it comes with a marinara sauce so I can't say anything. Overall would I go back? Sure, but I wouldn't be running towards it. After all of the good reviews, I finally was able to get some Deep Dish Pizza from Loui's Pizza. I have to say it was the best I have ever had so far. I ordered a Deep Dish Pizza with pepperoni and sausage. The cheese covering the meat was, oh so gooey, so good. The crust was crispy on some parts, soft and chewy on other parts. I did not eat inside as it was a carry out order. The girl (I forgot her name) was very helpful in guiding through the options. She also brought the pizza to the car, where they have special parking spots for carry out. She mentioned that they also are known for their Antipasto Salad. That will be another visit. If you're looking for an old school, dimly lit pizzeria with cool ambiance & great Detroit style pizza then this is your spot. However we went to go eat there recently and it definitely is much lighter, much more family-friendly, and definitely cleaner than the last time I went which was probably 10-15 years ago to be honest.
