My family are big fans of thin crust New York style pizzas. As soon as I saw a pic of the pizza at Fredi the PizzaMan, I knew we had to try it. It's a small restaurant but runs pretty efficiently. There aren't a lot of great seating options, so I think carryout is probably the way to go here. Or else arrive at opening or go during a non-holiday period. This place, despite the size, has a lot of personality and clearly a lot of repeat customers. In my short visit, I saw several people borrow one of the silver sharpies on the counter to write a message on the bricks, walls, counter, etc. The whole restaurant is covered with people's graffiti, which is kind of great because it just shows how much it is loved that people want to be part of it. Staff was very helpful and friendly. I ordered a medium pepperoni pizza, which was big enough to feed three people with light appetites. All three of us were very pleased with the quality and quantity of the pepperoni. The pizza was also served with fresh basil, which is a very nice touch. I personally think the crust and sauce could be a bit more flavorful, but it was still a very good pizza overall. I highly recommend Fredi the PizzaMan but caution that there might be a bit of a wait and/or lines. read more

First off let me start by saying this is not my 1st rodeo at this establishment. As an avid fan of Fredi's style of pizza I would have to say these two pies were delicious, but definitely not my go-tos. If you enjoy no cheese pizza (which I sadly found out I did not) then try the New Haven. Despite no cheese it had a nice crunch to it and the sauce was fire so I will give it that. They opened at 2pm , and people were already there at 1:45pm so that threw me off. It took almost an hour to order because there was a lot of families ahead of me but if you are willing to wait you will not be disappointed. I wanted to like this more. Don't get me wrong. It's good. It's more than good. It was not great though. You better have some spare time because it could take some time to get your food. They have a ticket system and all orders are placed in person. We probably waited 20 or so minutes to order (about 1:00 on a weekday) and another 15-20 for the food. We got two larges. The first was a custom pepperoni, sausage, and mushroom and the second was The Don. The Don was good. Crust had good flavor and toppings were good. The free house ranch was very good. The custom pizza has potential to be great due to the taste of the flavors, but it was so floppy and almost impossible to eat the whole slice with one hand. I'm not sure if this was a fluke or if they are always floppy. Perhaps, I'll ask for it well done next time. I came here with my sisters a few days ago and I had a good time overall. We came in at 3:30ish and there was a sign that they were low on pizzas already. I got nervous because I know the hype around this place. We go in get a number and then order maybe 2 or 3 minutes later. I ask her what's available and she said everything so I was really confused. I was still confused because online it says I can still order plain slices but you can't anymore. I ordered the hot honey pizza but not the one on the left side of the menu. I dont know, I got the one with pepperoni on it. I also asked for a cheese pizza and she asked me if I wanted to do half cheese and half pepperoni... I thought she meant for the hot honey but it wasn't. I ended up getting two pizzas which was fine. Just confusing. Overall, pizza was good. The crust was really burnt on both honestly but the flavor was good. It burnt all of our mouths. My sister's roof of her mouth was so burnt that it peeled... I'd never seen that before. What makes this place different from the other places is the quality of the dough and cook of it. They make a good undercarriage and crust that is crispy and has a good bite too it. Fredi also doesn't skimp out on the cheese as the it's loaded with it. I tried "the don" and Clemenza. I preferred the clemenza as it was a lot lighter and balanced pizza compared to the don which felt very heavy for me but was good for only a slice of so. Looking at the pizza fresh out of the oven I was convinced it'd be a 5 star experience. Well, pretty close. Toppings are good quality, menu is appropriately limited without silly stuff (though I'd love to find an artisan pizza place that hasn't succumbed to hot honey). It's the crust that falls flat for me. They do a great job getting a bubble and char, but the dough itself is bland and cracker-like. I wish it were sourdough, or even a higher hydration % and a longer ferment, with some more salt. In fact, the plain margherita pizza, with its dusting of Parmigiano, was a little better than the pepperoni-sausage-mushroom, because that cheese adds some needed salt and umami. It's still very good pizza, and in Melvindale, of all places. And as an independent restaurant offering good product at a fair price, it deserves your business. read more

I walked in and was immediately greeted and told to take a number. I was told that someone would be with me when my number was called. This is similar to your deli counter at the supermarket. A short time later, I placed an order for a cheese pizza. This is a pro move because you get to see how the crust, sauce, and cheese actually taste versus how they are masked with all the toppings. When I ordered it, the cheese pizza came out blazing hot. If you like light pizza with great cheese and sauce, this is the place to be. The pizza was also thin and crispy. If you like that style of pizza, this is for you. It tasted so good and was so light that I was able to finish it by myself. He came back again at night, when he was not busy but about 15 minutes before he closed. He allowed us to order two pizzas. I ordered the cheese and also the Margaritta Pizza. The cheese was just as fresh, hot, and just as good as my first time. The Margarita Pizza was not my favorite. He for sure has the consistency, which is why I gave it five stars. I learned about Fredi the pizza man a few years ago and have always wanted to try it. I live on the total opposite side of town but decided today was the day to give it a shot. You pull a ticket when you walk in the door and place your order up at the counter. The tables are large and have benches to sit on. The walls are covered with pictures of celebrities and sports players that have enjoyed Fredi's pizza over the years. The menu is on the wall written on a chalkboard and there is graffiti al over that has been written my customers. I got a Apollonia with hot honey, a Joey zaza triple pepperoni and an order of the goulash. Dave "El Presidente Portnoy gave Fredi's pizza an 8.7 and said it was "undoubtedly the best pizza in Detroit" and I couldn't agree more. Pepperoni and Hot Honey Pizza (4/5): There wasn't anything that particularly wowed me, but this was a very solid pizza with good cheese, good sauce, and a good crust. I liked how thin the crust was on the bottom of the pizza, but the actual crust part was too crunchy (probably my fault during the reheat). If you plan on going for dinner be sure to go early enough because once they run out of pizza dough for the day that's it's & unfortunately will have to turn people away. The service is extremely fast and the food is so fresh. They are very efficient with serving those who are dining in and to go orders! That is when you place your order ... read the chalkboard menu while you wait. They close early too (6PM on the day we went) so plan ahead! We ordered a basic cheese pizza (mix of fresh mozzarella and other cheeses) and a cheese calzone but will try a Margherita pizza (fresh mozzarella) next time. This place lives up to the hype!! First of all, I respect Fredi's insistence on not sacrificing quality in order to make more money. The restaurant is only open on certain days so check their hours to make sure they are open. There will be a line, but it doesn't take too long. And the wait is worth it!! Stopped in on a whim on the way home from the airport as we're not from this side of town, and wanted something that we wouldn't normally get. Parking is VERY limited, and we ended up on the street a bit down the block. Walking up to the building smelled AMAZING! The interior is very small, but has seating for quite literally just a few people. I've seen pictures with different seating arrangements and I'd say 10-12 people could be accommodated at a time when we were last here. A charming spot for sure. Pick a number and place your order! Picked up two cokes and a large pepperoni and cheese. It wasn't too busy, and our order was ready within 10 minutes or so and we had a few slices in before taking the rest home. Love the addition of fresh basil on the pie. The pizza itself is super thin, crispy and chewy with a little bit of char. PERFECT! Always love the cupping pepperoni, and I could tell the cheese was of good quality as it wasn't overly greasy and had a really nice flavor. This has great texture and great flavor. An excellent pizza! If I'm not getting Detroit Style, THIS is my favorite type of pizza and Fredi the PizzaMan is KILLING it! Also, note that there are signs that clearly state open until 5 OR UNTIL SOLD OUT. I can see them selling out quite often, so get here early. read more

We got take out. Not easy to get if you live out of town but good new york style pizza is hard to find in these parts. You cannot call. You cannot order online. They do take card. This is a no frills high quality pizza establishment. The pizza had some flop towards the center and more structure with a bubbly crust towards the edge. This is how I like my pizza. The ratios of stuff on top to bread were just right. The sauce was tomato and garlic forward, with a little acidic bite. I don't like when pizza places sweeten their red sauce. Amongst our adventures in Detroit, we landed at Fredi The PizzaMan. You know the place is the real deal when the hours are they close when they are sold out. I love it. In the inside of the shop, it's a pure mural of signatures of all the visitors to this restaurant. Service was excellent and efficient. It's a take a number and wait to be called system. To go one step further, the owner makes his rounds and talks to EVERYONE while they are enjoying their meal. That's a rarity these days. We got the Portney Special which was a traditional, round, cheese pie with fresh basil. The crust was amazing. Perfectly done and the crisp was earth shattering. The sauce was very flavorful and the cheese ratio was perfect. Not your traditional Detroit pie but I would put this up against any of the top NY Pizza Spots. Friendly and phenomenal food. Decided to stop as we were headed home U of M. Great decision! We ordered two pies, both "Margarita" style (fresh mozzarella instead of shredded). This pizza was so hot that I am pretty sure I could have drive all the way home (East side) and it would have still been hot! We ate outside on a picnic table and had to wait for it to cool down. This is a delightfully thin crust - if you're looking for thicker or "normal" crust this ain't it. It was thin, crispy and perfect charred. Burned my darn mouth cause it smelled so mouthwatering and I couldn't even wait for it to cool! Pepperoni seemed to be the "cupping" style on my husband's pizza which he said was great. The green olives on my pizza were not the typical canned olives. I think they were Castelvetrano which I happen to love. The workers were very very nice, and I love that this pizza place really supports autism. I would totally stop at this place again! Take a number and wait until your number is called, then they take your order. After they take your order, it is ready in 15 minutes. The place isn't big, so when a seat opens up take it. This is a true old school pizza place. Pictures all over the place and everyone in there is patiently waiting for their pizza. The staff does a great job of getting people in and out and keeping it clean with that much foot traffic. The pizza itself, is amazing. I ordered the margarita and a pepperoni pizza. So, I finally got around to trying Fredi The Pizzaman. And for the first time since moving to Michigan I can say I found a pie which is worth going out of my way. The sauce was clearly not just something out of a jar and the crust.... it was crisp but still had air and flavor. The pies are umami bombs. Fredi's is definitely the best pizza I've had in Michigan and is among the best I've had since leaving NYC. Fredi's exemplifies the difference between a place run by a genuine, skilled, experienced pizzaiolo and a place run by an owner/manager who buys pre-packaged ingredients and leaves all the kitchen work to part-time minimum-wagers. I drove 90 minutes round-trip in the pouring rain and I will be back, not just because I happen to be in the neighborhood. For those inclined to try Fredi's: do not wait until the end of the day.
