I'm sorry, but I don't get the rave reviews. I HATE not giving positive reviews but start making a less-than-acceptable pizza at a ridiculous price and you get my attention in the wrong way. As a New Haven pizza fan, the REAL kind, I was extremely disappointed. I know that after having eaten the real New Haven (Pepe's, Sally's, and Modern), I need to tighten down my expectations, but come on! They have these beautiful ovens, a nice, clean, and pleasant place and they turn out what I would consider pizza no better, perhaps a little less good than Hungry Howies thin crust pizza! New Haven is supposed to be crispy and chewy, NOT soggy. I tried Farmington Hills a few months ago and ate in, then last week tried Birmingham and carried out. For those of you thinking that my carry-out experience may have been bad due to the 3 miles I had to drive home, but I've carried out a LOT of pies from a LOT of locations, and I DO take that into account. There are some positives: The ingredients were impeccable. Fresh, high-quality cheese and the mushrooms were done really well. The pepperoni was of good quality but nothing worth writing home about. There are a lot of great pepperonis in the area. The doneness was great. It wasn't over- or undercooked. The flavor was good, but not, as some have said, amazing. In both cases, the crust was limp and soggy, NOT chewy and crispy. Not in the least. I don't mind if it's a little bit floppy, but not like this. An analogy I might give is to compare Tomatoes Apizza to Modern Apizza in actual New Haven is like comparing Jets Pizza to Loui's. Jet's is fine, but Loui's! (If you know, you know). To me, Modern in New Haven is at par, and not to be sacrilegious to our beloved Detroit Style, with Loui's or Palazzo Di Pizza, so it's not a style issue. My two experiences were both the same, so I don't know what to think. I'll give them one more try at some point. read more

Great pizza, friendly staff, super easy pickup. Cute spot with very limited eating space, this is mostly a pick up location. Great pizzas! The krab was very enjoyable, and the large sampler was a hit. Will definitely be back for more when I'm in the area! read more

I'm not even sure why they would send the pizza this badly burnt. It's not well done, it's definitely burnt. We order from the bham location somewhat regularly but lately it's been a disappointment. Not only was it burnt but it was cut very sloppy and so salty. It was very difficult for my kids to eat. The Classic was probably my favorite of the 4 - just the right balance of flavors. Some of the most authentic and tastiest pizzas I've ever had! Ordered a small Naples sampler with pepperoni, small green pizza, added mushrooms, onions, mixed peppers (green and red), basil and anchovies on one side only and a Naples salad too. The green pizza was topped immensely with toppings, nice coverage for sure. The pizza did get a bit soggy and flimsy, but it still tasted good. The crust was hard, but the rest was a bit soggy, might be due to the weight of the toppings though. Ok Frankie. One bite, everyone knows the rules. This quickly spreading local chain is attempting to capitalize on Dave Portnoy's love of New Haven style pizza. Is this New Haven style pizza? I don't know, I've never had it. Is this good pizza? Meh? Portnoy's pet peeve is a floppy pizza. This pie has a heavily charred crust and a super floppy undercarriage. It's kind of tough but chewy. Not the biggest fan of the flavor of the dough. Has a definite weird taste to it. The sauce and cheese and pepperoni are outstanding. A large is absolutely humongous. And not only is it huge, it is hugely expensive! But then again, they are next to Papa Joe's in downtown Birmingham; probably the most expensive commercial real estate. My favorite spot in the Birmingham/Troy/Royal Oak area to get pizza (or apizza for those that know)! I ordered the Naples Sampler as it accommodates for all taste buds and picky eaters alike. I love me some New Haven style has that crunch, crisp, and thin-y quality. You can really taste that delicious coal fire in the char of the undercarriage. (old man with white hair) has NO problem giving customers burnt food whereas the other cooks have burned a pizza before and have said ''Let me remake that for you''. This pizza was Amazing; of course, at the time we had it, it was still carry out only. So we're already making plans to dine in. The classic pepperoni was fantastic, but the mushroom and onion pizza was my favorite. We had never tried "new haven" style pizza before. I enjoyed it far more than any Chicago style. All the ingredients tasted fresh. The only reason for the four stars was the cheese bread. It was just ok, but I'm sure that was because of the carry out. I was headed into Papa Joe's when I noticed Tomatoes APIZZA located next door. After a quick grocery trip, I stopped into the very clean location set up for take-out/delivery. This is very different from the large, sit-down place that I am accustomed to in Farmington Hills. A quick glance at the menu and decision made: crab pizza and cheese bread. The menu is very simple. For pizzas, you can choose your own toppings or there were a few chef creations. Additionally, you can select salads, pasta, or bread. I waited in my car (COVID) - for 10 minutes only - while the staff prepared my order. The smell of garlic was tantalizing as I drove home. Since there was a ton of road construction, my order was cool rather than piping hot by the time I got home. I had to pop both into the oven for a few minutes for a refresh. The crab was sweet and delicate. The thinly-sliced garlic complemented the overall flavors, as did the squeeze of lemon. The cheese bread, served with tomato sauce, was garlic goodness. I wish I ordered the Naples sampler, 4 different pizza toppings on one pizza. I like trying different flavors. I am glad that there is yet another option for pizza - since it appears that COVD ignited my interest in pizza. I went from having pizza maybe twice a year to pizza all the time. read more

First time having Tomatoes APIZZA and it was wonderful. Reminded me very much of pizza we would enjoy in Italy. The large is LARGE. But it's a very thin crust and makes for excellent leftovers. We loved the Naples Sampler as it gave us a little taste of everything. We ordered takeout from the Birmingham location and it was an easy process. Everyone who likes pizza probably has a place that they know of that they think makes the best pizza in the world. But, I humbly suggest you will revise your opinion once you try the pizza at Tomatoes. To give you a true picture of why the pizza is so dang good here, I really do have to break down all the elements so you know why. First, let's start with the name: the sweet and slightly tangy flavor of the San Marzano tomatoes is unmistakable, and you can almost taste the sunshine of the Italian countryside where they were grown. This really sets it apart from a garden-variety (pun intended) tomato sauce. There's a touch of garlic and seasoning that elevate it, but you really get a full taste of the tomato. One thing I love about the thin crust at Tomatoes is that it really highlights what's on top of the crust. While there is a satisfying chew to a deep dish pizza, the crust in that kind of pizza does share top billing with the toppings. Not so here. The crust, while then, still supports everything on top of it perfectly, with a very slight crunch with every bite. When you get to the outside crust, it's perfect and crispy. If you're somebody who normally discards the crust, you won't want to here. Normally, I'm bored with pepperoni pizza, but I love the pepperonis here. My only gripe is that they don't put many on the pizza. And, there's just the right amount of cheese to play with the other elements perfectly. While you're at it, order some garlic bread. As authentic as everything in the pizza is, it probably won't surprise you that they use actual garlic on this bread, not garlic salt like most places. I can't believe I just spent six paragraphs describing pizza and bread, but, I'm already thinking about the next time when I can order another pizza from here. read more

The classic red sauce is VERY good. We added mushrooms and bacon and it was Fabulous! Recommend ordering " light on the crust" otherwise you will get an authentic wood fire charred crust. Another tip: confirm the store location you call. We placed a pick up order at what we thought was the Birmingham store but we accidentally called the Farmington Hills store. The large size is LARGE and the small is SMALL. The sauce divine. The team is cheerful but busy! There aren't any eat-in tables; service is to-go only. Just tried them last night. Got the large sample, it is really huge but the dough is really thin, reminds me of neapolitan pizza. Each section had unique flavor but I liked the most the tomato garlic and regular margherita. The green was very good too, but I wish they put some additional white sauce. This is one of my favorite pizza joints in Detroit. It's New England style pizza...thin crust, crispy & just divine! We always get their house salad too which has enough stuff (garbanzo beans, house made croutons, delicious ranch, cucumbers, tomatoes) to fill you up alone! We always go to the one in Birmingham although I hear the Farmington hills one has an awesome brunch option. This one is take out only. Usually good service too...Magy is the best there-never messes up order and is always kind even when they are very busy. Speaking of busy, they are usually "always" busy so order at least one hour ahead on busy nights. **Dessert: their Nutella pizza comes in their dough rolled like a calzone and taste way better than Nutella. read more
