As soon as Jamie W and I checked into our hotel in Le Marais, we actually had to bolt to make our last-minute appointed timeslot at the newly refurbished Notre Dame cathedral. When we realized we were going to be about a half-hour early, we made a stop here because it looked quite inviting. It was to be our very first cafe stop in Paris, a momentous occasion, n'est-ce pas? Although they offered a full cafe menu of French favorites, we didn't have time to have even a slice of toast with creamy butter. Rather, we restrained ourselves and ordered a couple of ¥7 Cafe Creme Glaces which was their slightly sweeter rendition of cafe au lait (Photo 8). We ate here 2 years ago and it was decent. Are here today and ordered the same Niçoise salad as before. First of all it came with rice - a surprise - and almost no lettuce. The appetite killer was the tuna - brown unappetizing - I sent it back. Took forever to get an onion soup instead figuring they couldn't ruin it but they did. Apparently new chef. Very disappointing experience. A classic tourist trap. I ordered the steak with blue cheese sauce, medium rare. It arrived completely well done -- not slightly over, but fully cooked through. When I pointed this out, the waiter argued with me about the temperature instead of correcting it professionally. That alone set the tone. I sent the steak back, but by then my wife had already started her burger, so the meal together was ruined. When a restaurant gets a basic steak temperature wrong and then debates the customer about it, it's difficult to recover. To make matters worse, the same waiter was openly rude and condescending to a pair of American girls seated next to us who were simply asking to split their check. The attitude was unnecessary and unprofessional. I spoke with the manager, who said it was his first day. They comped our appetizer, but we were charged for everything else despite the mishandled main course and poor service. Paris is full of exceptional restaurants. With a cold wind blowing off the Seine, and having walked and shopped for hours, we needed a port of call before going to Norte Dame Cathedral. Having seen the Cafe Louis Philippe many times from a passing bus, we decided to stop in the attractive green and white striped Cafe for a quick lunch. I'm happy we did. We were brought inside to a nice table for two. Genuine Cafe ambiance. The place was fairly busy with a mix of locals, (The Cafe is close to City Hall) and a smattering of tourists. We decided upon their traditional Boeuf Bourguignon and my wife chose Coq au Vin. We complemented our meal with a glass of Brouilly wine. The Beef stew was nicely presented with many vegetables and nice quality meat but I have had better. The Coq au Vin and puree was superb and plentiful and was as it should be. Given that both these dishes have so many variations worldwide, it was good getting the Parisian style. Both meals were served in the traditional heavy iron French pots. Service was friendly and prices were moderate. The Cafe has a good vibe and classic feel being both warm and inviting. Food here is 3-star/average ... it's amazing how hard it is to find great French cuisine in Paris these days! However, atmosphere is 5 stars. Hands down, this (and the fancier restaurant, Chez Julian across the street) were the two picture perfect Parisian restaurants we were hoping to find. To soak in this atmosphere is what Paris is all about ... timeless, classic and a mix of locals and tourists you'll feel like Hemingway could sit down next to you and have a candlelit dinner. Unfortunately, I had food poisoning in Paris which I attribute to either a meal at famous pretentious Paris bistro Louise L'Ami or an unlikely earlier lunch at an oyster bar in Montmartre. So, I wasn't quite ready to eat a big meal, which the restaurant was understanding about. I had French scrambled eggs, a side of potatoes and prunes and vanilla ice cream in Armenac for dessert because my stomach was rocky from the day. My date had the fampus French dish, Beef Bourgenoen (cannot find a proper spell check). The beef dish was lukewarm, came in a small ramekin and was utterly unremarkable. It honestly was worse than we've had at some restaurants in the US. Maybe even Trader Joes. The gravy was thick and the beef chewy. The scrambled eggs are as they make them in Paris ... not at all fluffy. Runny and milky, which I expected, but they were bland and unseasoned. The potatoes were okay. My favorite part of the meal was the prunes in Armagnac with a scoop of quality vanilla ice cream. Overall the food was bland, unremarkable and tasted like it was made in big batches the way you'd find at hotel room service or Disneyworld. Perhaps this was due to us coming at the end of the night an hour before closing time. Restaurants in Paris close surprisingly early, even on the weekends. The atmosphere here is fantastic with small tables with woven chairs and flickering candlelight. The outer patio is picture perfect. The inside has an old fashioned marble coffee bar/bar and looks like something from the 1960's with bric a brac and old cash register. This is where the locals hang out. Another thing to mention was that the staff here was wonderful. Our waiter was funny, helpful and accommodating. We hadn't experienced too much of the famous French service as Americans except for at Louise L'Ami. We started off trying to order in French and the waiter helped us with pronunciations. He then suggested we let him practice his English ... a tactful way to let us know that would be easier. He also was very nice about menu selections and taking a picture for us. I would actually come back here just for the atmosphere. This was one of the perfect ways to end our trip ... we had not seen many cafes in Paris that were straight from a movie but this restaurant looked the part. If only the food matched. read more

Spent Easter Sunday here. We really enjoyed the dinner. We sat on the patio which was amazing. We started with some cocktails and moved into escargot, salads and some French onion soup. Plenty of choices in the menu for everyone to choose from. We had lamb, chicken and pork. Everything was excellent. Good portions, well prepared and presented well. The service was excellent. Extremely rude servers - my husband came in when it was empty on a Tuesday evening at 9:30 pm and asked if we could sit in their tented area since there were over 12 tables open. Hostess said yes, took us there and asked us what we were ordering, and when we said drinks/dessert, the server promptly said no and said we needed to be inside. We then asked if we could be moved back outside since there were over 12 tables available and they said yes. Service was ok until I attempted to look at a menu available on the empty table next to me, and the server came over and literally reprimanded me for a good minute on how I can't take things like that. I'm shocked and appalled at this ridiculously bad service. Do not recommend, especially when there are much friendlier restaurants nearby. read more

3.5 stars. I have to say, it's pretty cool when you travel to a country and even your worst meal is still kinda good. Situated in Paris' 4th arrondissement just a stone's throw from the river Seine and across the bridge from the Notre Dame, Louis Philippe is a nice little spot specializing in traditional French food such beef bourguignon, andouillette with old-fashioned mustard, and boudin with fries. I ordered the grilled steak with bernaise sauce, which was accompanied by au gratin potatoes and tian provençal. It was solid! My steak was more medium than medium-rare, but it was fairly tasty and displayed some decent grill marks. I also really enjoyed the sauce. Bernaise is not a regular part of my condiment rotation, but this rich/tangy sauce is a classic pairing for grilled meat. Plus, I was in France! I mean, if there was ever a place to order bernaise, it would be somewhere here. The tian was nice, but I wish they could've given me more of that tomato sauce. The worst part of my meal was definitely the au gratin potatoes as they seemed stale and felt reheated. Not moist or enjoyable at all. And then there's the bread and butter. Both were excellent.I can't emphasize enough how good bread is in this country. Service was great! Folks were very warm, welcoming and attentive. As for ambiance, Louis Philippe is not a fancy spot. It's casual for sure, but the place has plenty of character as it's located in a historic building with decor dating back to 1810. I've lived in Paris for 14-years, fortunately, I've only had a handful of bad experiences with wait staff. This is one, if not the top worst experience I've ever had. It was storming tonight we were getting wet, so we decided to go to the closets restaurant to us and get a bite to eat, what a mistake.We waited a half an hour, finally, I got the waiter's attention and told him we were ready to order in a calm manner. Beautiful restaurant from outside and inside. The outside atmosphere of it is so inviting with beautiful garden flowers hovering from every corner of windows. It's absolutely a perfect picture. Came here for a late night dinner. And my boyfriend had lamb special. I was hungry so I ordered two salads with sardines and herring, because I often crave those things and you can barely find a restaurant in USA to serve a salad with herring. My Russian side can be strong and overwhelming with cravings. The service was awesome and helpful. They enjoyed taking to us in English and educate my boyfriend in French who is eager to learn. I dined at Louis Philippe in chilly January with quite a large group and all of us fell head over heels in love with Paris that evening (large thank you to the delicious food). We had a wonderful three course meal consisting of a salad with tomato stuffed with goat cheese, seared salmon and the most heavenly chocolate cake doused in crème anglaise. We had a nice late dinner here based on a recommendation from our hotel staff. The food was very good. I had a delicious steak served with potatoes au gratin and excellent ratatouille. My son was not as impressed with the boeuf bourguignon (a little bland), but everything else was perfect to our tastes. The house cat took notice of our arrival and spent 20 minutes relaxing on my jacket along our booth. Very friendly, but the waiter made him take his leave when my food arrived and he thought my lap would be a better vantage point for observing the meal (smile). Dessert was very good. My wife and I just returned from having dinner at this restaurant. We ordered the salad, escargot, "prime" beef for two and a bottle of red wine. The salad had canned tuna on top which you could buy in the states for $0.50. The escargot had little to no garlic. The "prime" beef for two could not have been anything other than a sliced piece of rump roast. My wife and I literally could not chew The meat enough to swallow it. When I politely explained our experience to the owner, she turned her nose up at me and handed me a bill for €100. if I could give this restaurant a Zero star rating I would. Had a good dinner here in the upstairs room with a very large party and we were able to have quite a fun time. Our friend who lives around the block suggested it and we enjoyed everything. Don't let the multilingual menus fool you - this is quality Parisian fare. From the escargot to the chocolate mousse our friend who has lived here part time for decades has been coming here weekly. I am not sure if you pay more for seating upstairs, but for a nice evening meal it is the best. For coffee in the afternoon or wine in the evening the patio is quite nice. We ordered by the bottle but our friend suggested the carafe for red and white. Definitely go with the carafe! From it's early 20th century interior, to the very cool winding staircase to the second level, this place could be a film set. They accepted my US chip credit card without any problem. I often give a 4 star rating to places I've really enjoyed but Louis Philippe deserves a 5 star. The reason: the meat was cooked on a fire grill. I haven't found that anywhere else in Paris. We started out with frog's legs which were exactly what they should be--garlicy, buttery and crispy. Then 2 of us got lamb and 2 of us got entrecôte. After carefully explaining how pink I wanted mine, it came out to perfection. The meat was charred, medium rare and nice and fatty--a big plus for me. All the sides were delicious. Too full for dessert, we will def be back here for more fire-grilled meat.
