The food here was really good. I ordered the Beef Tartare with chips on the side as well as a smoked Salmon and a mock tail mojito. I wouldn't recommend the mock tails here, actually one of the worst mock tails I've tried, but the food was all very seasoned and up to par. The restaurant also has a nice decor and ambience inside, also very conveniently located inside of a train station. The service here could definitely be better though. When we declined to order any wine and instead opted for a mock tail since we don't drink alcohol, the waiter made a big fuss which was definitely rude of him. read more

One evening we went to dinner at Lazare, the restaurant in the Gare St.-Lazare, which the New York Times has praised. We were very disappointed. A plate of oysters were served on the half-shell with the oyster still strongly attached to the bottom shell. I pointed that out to the waiter and he brought over the maitre-d' who very tersely said that it would be inappropriate to served them detached. No matter the wishes of the diner, I guess. We had oysters frrequently on this trip and the only other place where they remained firmly attached to shell was when we bought them at an oceanfront street market in Cancale. The rest of the meal at Lazare was OK, I guess, but the interaction with the maitre d' spoiled the dinner. read more

Came in here for a quick light late lunch on a Sunday as it was close to our hotel and opened. We were seated relatively quickly at the bar. The bartender/waitress was very nice, took our order quickly, and made a few good drink suggestions. Our appetizers came out pretty quickly. We got a couple of oysters and the sea urchin tarama spread with blinis. The oysters were fresh and delicious. The tarama was tasty and a hefty portion, but I was a bit disappointed that the tarama tasted like normal tarama with not a hint of sea urchin. For the main, we split an order of mussels which came with a side of fries. The curry flavored broth for the mussels was satisfying and not too heavy. The pacing wasn't great as it took over 20 minutes for the mussels to come out. Knowing how quick and easy mussels and fries are to make, it was clearly due to some inefficiency in the restaurant operations. Overall, it's not a bad place to go to if you're not in a hurry and have no trains or planes to catch. read more

After a recommendation from my hotel which is across the way, I decided to dine at Lazare which is in a good location and is also next to Gare Saint-Lazare. The food is a little expensive here compared to other Brasseries but being tired, I decided to give this place a shot as it seems to be regularly busy and popular with locals into the night. I was told I could order the chicken dish with chips as for some reason the mashed potato contained gluten - I've never heard of that before, who puts flour in mashed potato? There was originally some confusion, I explained I would like a garlic sauce to the waiter and he seemed confused, I asked him first if he could check if they could change the sauce for me. They wouldn't tell me what was in the sauce in English or French, all I wanted to know was if it was something I'd eat, it changed it went from being like gravy to the roasting sauces. If that wasn't bad enough about five minutes after ordering the chicken with a garlic sauce he asked me "Was it with or without garlic". I told him what he wanted, he pretended to understand as he went to the kitchen only to come up with such a strange comment. He was friendly, and I hope this was down to an issue with translation and him obviously not wanting to give away the recipes rather than incompetence. It turned out the sauce was mainly the roasting sauces with a few other flavours, I do think it becomes very rich but I did like it, although it wasn't really what I was expecting, wanting or asked for. The quality of the chicken again was okay, I do prefer breast meat and some meat was darker and chewy but most of it was cooked well. The highlight of my meal was the side, the fries were fresh, tasty with the amazing fresh sea salt which you can sprinkle yourself with the spoon, now those were so good, I'd even go back to just order tray after tray of fries if they'd let me. I did like the addition of the bacon lardons along with the dish which seemed to make it a little fancy. A few other interesting notes - I think they actually sell their silverware here, the room is decorated with 1000's of plates all over - For some reason they sat tables closer together, I would have thought in a slightly high-end place they would at least leave one table between each guest at least until it got busy. - The food is a tad expensive and I wouldn't say it's value for what it is - More clarity in what is being served as there were different answers between two staff members and my sauce must have changed half a dozen times in that time. - They have homemade mayonnaise, it's thick fresh and goes really well with the awesome fries. 3* - A safe place to grab a meal if you're looking for decent food without going too far if staying at the Hilton or in the Opera area, for the price though I'd expect a lot more. read more

I'd be hard pressed to give this place more than 4 stars. This being said, I would comeback here again. In fact, I will come back here on Wednesday night for dinner. Stumbled across this restaurant after Patricia Wells recommended that we (all) eat here for dinner. Since this place is located behind the Hilton Opera hotel in Paris, My partner and I decided to take the 2 minute trek over to see what the fuss was all about. We arrived at the Metro station where the restaurant is an were immediately greeted by a friendly hostess who promptly sat us down away from the bar and to our seats. My partner sat down and admired his view of the general splendor of the restaurant; the decor, the busy staff, and and troves of french people coming in for a warm meal. I had a view of some plates on the wall and an empty water jug nestled in a cubby hole. We started with the octopus appetizer (Poulpe et haricots...) which was 5 star. You can see my picture of this dish. Worth every center. the octopus was PERFECTLY cooked, and I loved the fresh herbs and texture of the entire dish. We also had a bottle of wine between the two of us. The cost of this bottle was maybe 37euro which means about 45 US dollars. Not bad. The wine however was great! Not sweet at all, and lightly buttery with clean, crisp notes on the finish. Look at my photo I took if you want to see what we ordered. The first dish was ok. Though, my partner would never admit that it was sub par; but I would. He ordered the seared scallops in some kind of pesto risotto sauce. The scallops were PERFECTLY cooked. I cannot remember the last time I ate scallops so good. The dish itself has a bright, yet creamy sauce that tied together the buttery scallops and sharp parmesean shaves. I gave this dish 4 star as I thought it could have used more seasoning such as salt, citrus, heat? something. All in all, good dish and yummy. My dish was the fish dish. Monday night blue plate special if you will. quenelles de Brochet en Narnua sauce. A few things: (que the music). The fish was pike. I love pike. However, growing up jewish I know what pike fish is, and I know that whenever I have made pike fish, I have make it into gifilte fish and enjoyed it. As you can see in my photos of my dish, the 2 fish cannells were presented as 2 floating islands in my Narnua sauce. The sauce was just EXCELLENT gravy and I sopped my plate clean with my baguette. The fish was light, clean, and very true flavor integrity wise, however the dish left me wanting more. ...More food; preferably in the form of meat or something more like food that isn't so ....fluffy. All in all the food, dinner and staff were great, but I am giving this establishment a 4 start. I will try this place again Wednesday, and see what this place does to my review. Went in expecting great food and service . Was very disappointed in both . Me and my husband ordered the Sunday chicken special at around 8:30pm . Now they close at midnight. Was told that they did not have anymore chicken . Originally was told they only had breast . Then maybe 15 minutes later when I decided okay I'll try it after asking if it is dry breast , I don't like breast but was willing to try it , then told they don't have anymore chicken. Having researched restaurants for this holiday in Paris, Lazare was a top choice. Even though there wasn't a pris fixe menu and the prices were rather steep, I enjoyed lunch here immensely. The service was impeccable and the food top notch. I began with a celeriac remoulade which was beautifully plated. This was a refreshing starter and a good combination. After that came roasted whiting covered with croutons that tasted caramelized on a bed of Xeres wilted spinach topped with pine nuts and three large caper berries. Each bite was ambrosial and I had tears in my eyes thinking of how tasty the food is in Paris and what an art form the chefs have come up with. "Crêpes Suzette" was my dessert of choice and it was sublime. I can taste it as I am writing this review. I chose to have a Perrier with this lunch. My husband's steak tartare was actually incredibly light and those cigarette fries, while a little gimmicky, were delicious. It's just too bad that they don't do a prix fixe menu because the dishes on their own can be a bit pricey. That said, everything was super copious so an entree/plat or plat/dessert is really all the food that you need. Special mention goes to the incredible Paris-Deauville dessert, the signature of the chef. A cross between a cheesecake and a flan, I've never tasted anything like it. Amazing French cuisine for the hungry traveler. This place is expensive but worth the price. When we went they did not have an English menu but our server was incredibly helpful in translating the plates (so was Google translate). I enjoyed the white wine pairing with my steak and mashed potatoes. The brown sauce they used to compliment the steak was terrific. What I truly enjoyed about this place was the big portions. You felt like you were enjoying a fine dining experience without sacrificing taste, which was impeccable. The service here was also absolutely charming. A nice French Brasserie in the Saint Lazare train station. It is across from the Hilton Opéra. Nice modern look with dark wood and chrome furnishings. Service was top rate and staff spoke English as well as French. Food was good but a bit to commercial. Understandable as they must serve travelers on a tight schedule. We came here on the advice of the Hilton clerk. We came for lunch and Loved the food. The starters were the calamari and the tuna tartar which is a must. the perfect balance of avocado and tuna is just right. For the main we had the roast beef, the lamb shoulder with couscous-and the mussels in curry sauce. Every dish was unique and suberb. We will be back forsure. oh yeah we shared a crepe suzette. Very decent place. A bit pricy, but the food is tasty and service is very friendly and helpful:) I've had white white asparagus as a starter, and very tasty mules in white sauce. Plates are quite big as for a French place - it was more than enough for one person. It's a bit pricy but you get good value for the money. Mind that it's located at the train station. read more

I stopped here for lunch with my husband and his parents during a recent trip to France. We didn't have a reservation but we came in at the later end of lunch so we did not have to wait too long before getting seated. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a very posh feel - the diners all seemed to be business professionals (except of course for us). We struggled through the menu a bit with our broken French (for which our server had very little patience). We chose to get all small plates and split them among the group. My absolute favorite was the haricot verts and artichoke salad which we have tried to reproduce at home a number of times. We also enjoyed the avocado, grapefruit, and crab salad, the tranche de tomate, carpaccio de tete de veau, and charcuterie. Each dish was bright and flavorful - perfect for lunch. For desert we split the ille flottante a la violette which was surprisingly fun. The violette flavor was so sweet and only minimally floral - This was my favorite desert of the whole trip! I highly recommend Lazare and would like to go again immediately! read more

Dear Management, I would like you to know that I had the worst lunch service today. Nobody greeted me when I arrived with a reservation, and had to ask a bartender to be seated after waiting at the front desk for 10 minutes. Although seated right next to a service station, I sat at my table for 15 minutes until I had to get the attention of the same woman who seated me. She then spoke to whom I think was a floor manager and when I asked him if anyone had bothered to notice me, he asked me what I would like to order. I visit Paris every now and then, and was really looking forward to dining at Lazare during this trip. However, I left the restaurant disappointed, so much so that I skipped dessert, which nobody does in Paris. No one should expect that at a restaurant of your status when paying 65 euros for a two course lunch. First, I want to start this by saying I'm not a cranky American who doesn't understand French culture. Though, I suppose you should be your own judge of that. We went to Lazare around 9pm on a Sunday night for a late dinner. After placing our drink orders we were ignored, including even water (which we ordered a bottle of flat), for over 30 minutes. Once we asked, and placing our order again (our waiter must have just forgotten our first order?! - no apology) the water and our bottle of wine arrived after we watched two wait staff argue for a bit. Received a very chill response from our waiter which left us wondering if we did something wrong? We had planned on ordering both appetizers and entrees. After our waiter would only take our appetizer order (there may have been a language confusion here), and our drinks and appetizers took 45 minutes to appear, we decided to go elsewhere for our main dishes. We also waited an additional 20 minutes to pay the check after asking for it despite multiple wait staff walking by our table with our credit card clearly visible on top of the check. I understand not wanting to rush us, but isn't this a universal sign for please let us pay? read more

Unfortunately both not of a high standard. Snails were very tough and the stew was served as a steak with a large piece of bone as a garnish! Stew had no flavor at all. We complained about the flavor and were informed we were not the first customers to say this, however we were still charged for this meal. My wife had the organic egg mimosa starter which was tasty and bird game pie for mains which was delicious. Overall having one / two bad meals with a dinner can be forgivable but the service with the dinner was also very poor. The waiter was far more interested in the regulars and was not overly concerned with two tourists. Disappointing overall as this was a recommended restaurant. Ate lunch yesterday at Restaurant Lazare located in the Gare St. Lazare train station. This is my second visit to this wonderful bistro in the last year. The dining room is open, clean and filled with natural light from a large wall of windows. Service is exceptional from hostess greeting, wait staff to several managers roaming the floor checking on tables and food. Menu items only described in French, however, wait staff and especially management staff happy to take the time to describe any items in English if requested. My lunch included a green leaf salad perfectly dressed in a light oil, cauliflower cream soup, which of course was rich, displaying beautiful mellow cauliflower flavor. My main course was a juicy boneless chicken breast in a pan sauce with small potatoes, bacon bits and mushrooms. A chocolate tart with vanilla ice cream finished me off. Spectacular from start to finish. Do yourself a favor try Lazare for lunch or dinner you will not regret it. Reservations are critical, however, they do have about a dozen seats at the bar for walk in meal service as well. read more

We had to wait a bit for a table and upon walking in, it already felt a bit pretentious though we were in no way dressed down. I find it difficult to rate this experience higher than 4 stars. Ultimately you go to a restaurant for food, atmosphere and service, all of which were very good. I would recommend the filet with green peppercorn sauce and my wife said that her 7 hour cooked lamb was fantastic. The decor was nice and the price was fair, considering being in Paris. What threw me off was the waiter seemed friendly however he refused to bring tap water. It's not like we hadn't ordered a couple beers, an appetizer, and 2 meals. We asked 3 times, all politely, even taking a stab in French to see if there was a misunderstanding. It's not until I read another review that it occurred to me that they were trying to push flat or sparkling bottled water. This seemingly little detail, especially considering the higher than normal temperature in the restaurant, made what would have been an excellent dining experience a little less than that. read more

A great last dinner in Paris! We were able to make an early reservation for Saturday (7 PM) and were among the first diners. We showed up right on time, although I could have spent considerably more time (and euros) at the intervening Printemps. We had an excellent server who helped us with our broken French and made us feel very much at home. We split the haricot vert & artichoke salad with toasted hazelnuts - AMAZING! I then had the tagliatelle with tomatoes & octopus - the noodles were exceptionally delicious and the octopus was surprisingly tender & delicate. My partner had the salmon with vegetables (snow peas, leeks, celery and carrot), cooked perfectly in a Staub two-handled skillet - love that French attention to details. I ordered crepes Suzette - an excellent interplay between the sweet sauce and tang of the zest, while my partner ordered the lies flotante. He proclaimed it a great dessert for him, given it's subdued flavor profile. The restaurant did become very busy towards the end of the meal and waited a bit to get more attention, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It is a very attractive space with a contemporary spin on the brasserie and we really wish we could have a second meal there - but it was a very fitting last meal! read more
