This place used to be one of my favorite places when I first moved here 3 years ago. The food here is pretty good. It is not always the same, though. Maybe different cooks prepare dishes differently? Sometimes, the ambiance can be a bit too loud, and it doesn't matter which night of the week it is. The service here is always great for me. I have heard it is not so great for others, but I have never had that issue. The drinks here are ALWAYS on point! If I knew how to make this give 3 and a half stars, that's what I would give. read more

This eatery has been our favorite Mexican food place for years, but it's been awhile since we'd been there. My favorite dish was their Carnitas, which came in the form of a thinly sliced pork steak with a really tasty and unique spicy sauce, veggies and rice and beans. It came this way for years, but tonight I discover it has changed completely. The shredded pork is now mixed with veggies and there is no sauce. Rice and beans are all that remain of a once outstanding dish. The new Carnitas dish is tasty, just not what I wanted or expected. Why did they change my favorite dish? My wife and out of town guest both had the spinach enchiladas and they said they were tasty, but were a little short on the spinach. Margaritas were weak, but good enough. They were pretty busy (a good thing), but seemed a little short handed and service was slow. Fortunately, the assistant manager took our drink orders and popped in now and then for refills and such, which we appreciated. All in all, a pretty good Mexican food place, but this change to the menu, and skimping on key ingredients will cause second thoughts next time we're in the mood for Mexican food. read more

Picked up some to go for dinner - carne asada plate, guacamole and chips appetizer, some rolled chimichangas and Sonoran stirfry with shrimp. All were delicious and the guacamole and chips were larger than I expected which was great! The carne asada had a nice flavor and was delicate. The shrimp in the stir fry were big. Nice big restaurant with a very extensive menu. Lots of options. I ordered some tacos and didn't care for the seasoning that was in the beef but the beans and rice were tasty. The strawberry margarita was good. Servers were friendly and responsive but the food took a while to reach our party of seven. read more

Just OK (at best) for us. The margaritas are weak with a limited selection to choose from and the food was bland. The outside patio area was clean and inviting (did not go inside) and the service better than adequate. Since this restaurant is surrounded by 55+ resorts, I totally understand the blander food and weak margaritas. read more

Prett much everything from service to food was spot on. The house margaritas were great our waitress suggested we do the grande for the better deal and we were not disappointed. The free chips and salsa, also great! The salsa had some bite but fresh and delicious. They were not stingy on this and made sure we had plenty. We loved the chicken enchilada with chili red sauce, shredded beef tacos and the chili queso. The queso was spicy but that's what we like so if spicy is not your thing you may want to skip this. This is a very busy restaurant with average Tex-Mex food. The servers choose whether they wear a mask or not as do the customers. All the servers and employees wear T-shirts that say "drink more beer" on the back and they wear jeans. I had the shrimp stirfry with Sonoran vegetables and it was OK. My dad had shrimp fajitas and it was OK. My mom and my daughter had fish tacos and they were OK. Nothing great, nothing terrible. The food came out fast. We waited about 20 minutes for a table and a Friday night at 5:30 and we were back in our car by 630. read more

There are two things about this place that could have kept me from ever coming here, in fact it did take me a long time to work my way down the list of local Mexican restaurants because our area has so many great little mom & pop places, why would I want to spend my time and money in a big national chain Mexican themed restaurant? Okay, that was the first misconception blown away because while it may look like a chain, and for sure it does look like it, Los Gringos Locos is 100% local born and bred. The other thing that moved them down on the list were the negative reviews but then I learned the trick of starting to read where the people who wrote the reviews actually lived and I quickly saw the trend that a very high percentage of them were part-time visitors or tourists who come from places where the epitome of Mexican haute cuisine is their local Taco Bell. Today when I read drivel like that it is like sending me an engraved invitation to try a place because 9 times out of 10 the reviews are bogus. So yeah, when you walk in the front door here everything about the place screams big national chain themed concept restaurant. It's just too big, too "perfect" and too impersonal. And the menu reinforces the stereotype, but at least the owners are honest about it by calling themselves a gringo restaurant, it is that indeed. But if I know that before I walk in the door, like I did tonight, fine I'm good with that. I eat in chain restaurants every now and then and sometimes the food is pretty good. I ordered the enchiladas poblanas, which at just over $14 bucks is priced a few bucks too high for what you get. For sure it's a sanitized version of Mexican food but the enchiladas were pretty fat with good tasting white chicken meat, the sauce was bland but nice, the frijoles refritos were ordinary but the rice was a cut above most places. If you blindfolded me and I had no idea where you took me I would give the quality of the food a score just under 4 points. Because the place is so big I'm sure there are several different levels of ambience in different rooms. I didn't get to see them all. We chose to sit in the smallish area just off the entrance where a large birthday party was in progress. Since it was our choice to sit there I can't complain about the obvious noise level from the kids but once again that sense of eating at a themed concept restaurant was reinforced. What stood out for me was the high energy, friendliness and helpful attitude of every employee I saw. Somebody must have waved a magic wand at this place when it came to hiring and training an unusually great staff and because of them the formulaic décor and good but not great food were put in their rightful perspective as just individual parts of our complete dining experience. To wrap this up then, I get the gut feeling that this place has thrived for so many years not because of the tourists who will stop here once and never come back but because of the locals. And because they serve an honest meal in a clean establishment at realistic prices and knock your socks off with killer service. Ignore the uninformed and try it out for yourself and you decide. I'm glad I did and because of that I'll be back. read more

I'm assuming our server was overloaded with tables as she did the checkback after we got our food, then we never saw her again until after we finished eating and was waiting over 5 minutes for a takeout container and our check. Unfortunately, all 4 of us would have liked to have another round of drinks to go with our dinner, as well as possibly dessert. I lived in Taos NM for 5 years and I can honestly say, the best tamale I have ever had is the Los Gringos Locos "Fresh Green Corn Tamale". Order at least two because one isn't enough. The house margaritas are great. The salsa isn't tongue roasting, eyes watering hot. I had a refill which I very seldom do. Great food, great service and the 2nd best margaritas and sangrias I've had! Food came out hot and seasoned perfectly. Our waitress was super nice and tried her best to help everyone. The queso was also good but I can't bring myself to buy it because they charge too much for very little. Not sure if they changed ownership but sadly we'll find another place for Mexican food. My girlfriend and I haven't been to this place in over a year so we thought we would show up for date night and good food. The front desk girl was great she had awesome attitude and was very friendly.We were quickly seated even though they were very busy which is nice. However, our server Michelle comes over with this lifeless attitude and acts like she hates her job. We order drinks and didn't have very much time to look at the menu before ordering food. The food came out quickly no issue with that . The issue was mainly with Michelle. Not one time did she come back ask us if we need anything else or how is everything etc basic stuff. We had finished all the salsa and had huge amount of chips left over she didn't think hey the might want salsa with the pound of chips. I was really hungry so I ate my food fast (small portions) as I was just finishing Michelle comes over and asks to grab the plate. All of this was within about 10 -15 min. I eat much faster than my girlfriend and i guarantee most couple are that way as well. My girl still has 1/2 plate left that I was helping her finish . as she goes to take a drink of her margarita Michelle comes over and starts to reach for her plate while asking if she is done. Clearly the plate was still half eaten and her margarita still had a lot left but at that point she was already almost touching the food and we felt extremely rushed. She THEN asks is there anything else I can get you? We say no and she already has the receipt on the table. Food 4 out of 5 though round of applause to the cooks!
