We tore out a really outdated stair railing with the thought of replacing it at some point with something more modern. Fast forward almost 5 years and still no railing was installed. Now we want to sell our house and found that we needed to install something so that we could pass inspection. We looked at several options and could not wrap our heads around building something ourselves - we are definitely not contractors and not very successful do-it-yourselfers. I called and put feelers out for several contractors with no real bites. Thankfully, Randy reached out to us and offered to send Stephen out to give us a quote. Stephen came out and took a look at what we did and was so great - he didn't laugh at our handiwork. He promised us a quote by the following day and told us that he could build and install something within the same week. We received our quote and signed the paperwork... it was that easy. Stephen and his helper came out and built us the most beautiful stair railing. WThey were so friendly and unbelievably fast. Stephen removed my old deck in one day and then went to work on creating my new one. It is 25' X 20', so we're talking big deck. It is free-standing off my yard. The wood is cedar and we decided to use cables to keep the view open. There is no table up yet, as we are still social distancing, but it's so nice to be on a beautiful new deck. I am a retired police officer and private investigator, so I am, by nature, very skeptical and cautious when it comes to contractors. We came upon a small construction matter that needed urgent attention due to the sale of our home. I saw this company on Yelp, as I was calling down the list. The owner of Longhouse Construction, Steven, was the first company to answer his phone late in the day. As you might know, finding a contractor to do an urgent project in the "high season" is almost impossible. Steven asked me to call back in an hour and he would see what he could do. I called back an hour later..... he had rescheduled other work, and his crew could be at my home first thing in the morning! Steven and his foreman got there on time, quickly assessed the project, went and got the necessary materials, and completed the construction job that day. The results were exactly what I asked for, and their labor hours and pricing quoted was average and reasonable. The final bill was LESS than I expected! Steven and his foreman were awesome, polite, professional, and listened to my needs. I will use this company for my future project needs! Well, I will be getting to know the inner workings of the Oregon contractors board in order to have the job I paid for done correctly. The work quality of this company is highly inconsistent and now instead of enjoying my new home, I have to deal with issues like paint peeling off trim etc. because the doors, windowsills and cupboard shelving were not prepared correctly. This along with a myriad of other items, including the odd substitution, by the contractor, of the quartz countertops in the contract and items such as a cabinet and mirror paid for, and not provided, will now be dealt with by the contractors board. UPDATE: We met with the Contractors Board and all items in the mediation agreement have been completed. read more

We used Longhouse Construction after my wife and I purchased our loft condo in North Park in Portland, Oregon. I contacted Stephen to give me an estimate on the remodeling that my place needed and he was there within a couple of days and finished the work (which was on an extremely rushed timeline) within the required time-frame. The budget was right on. Luckily for me we found Lighthouse Construction to be the perfect 'one-stop shop' that we needed. Stephen suggested materials (which we agreed were perfect for my loft) and was very accommodating as far as changes I requested during the renovation process - including our delayed desire to have additional walls painted. i am so pleased to be able to write a glowing 5 star review for a construction business! Stephen, the owner, is an amazing general contractor. I have hired him and his crew for a few projects around my house and I've always been more than impressed by his ability and knowledge. if you are looking for any type of custom wood work, large or small, I would definitely call Stephen. I swear he knows everything about everything construction related. most recently I hired Longhouse Construction to remove an old ceiling fan and install a new, more efficient model. seems easy enough... however, the ceilings in my house are 25' tall and at a very steep pitch not common to home interiors. Stephen came up with solid solutions to each of the problems he encountered along the way and in the end the large fan was installed beautifully and securely. once again he exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. Longhouse Construction always shows up on time, they work clean and fast, they are friendly and genuinely pleasant to have in your home, the prices are very competitive, and you can rest assured the job will be done right the first time, every time. I have gone so far as to suggest that certain details could be left undone since they were not very important to me, but NO... Stephen will not leave until the outcome is absolutely perfect which is a very admirable trait not often found in general contractors. to date i have hired Longhouse Construction for: removal and disposal of an old unsightly hot tub, a wooden fence removal and replacement, extremely fine custom wood trim for a high-end set of speakers, the ever tricky ceiling fan project, removal of a built in oven and replace with a newer model... i'm sure there is more i cant think of at the moment. if there is something in or around my house that needs to be done i ALWAYS call Longhouse Construction first. The quotes he gives are not always the very lowest but the rates are incredibly reasonable especially considering the caliber of craftsmanship that goes into each and every project. This is a younger business just getting established (a year or so in business?) and it is owned and run by a younger gentleman (Stephen.) please do yourself a favor and give these guys a shot next time you have any sort of home improvement project large or small. I have only used them for smaller projects due to my limited budget ( being a new home owner,) but i really enjoy hearing about and seeing the amazing huge projects they do for other people. These guys are fantastic! We live in a condo so lots of permits and rule requirements to have any major construction done. Stephen was able to consult and work with us to insure the work was to regulation and also had a great eye for design of what would look best in our place as we added a wall, sliding door and some other details to create a second bedroom in out place. And if there was any delay on materials or other details he made sure we knoew ASAP and had a plan to keep things moving! Just a great experience! read more

I would have loved to give a great review but Ill never get the chance with this guy! I set up an appointment with Stephen weeks in advance for him to come over and give me an estimate on some bathroom work. He cancelled 2 hours before due to a family emergency. Completely understandable and I was happy to reschedule a week later. Unfortunately, he then stood me up at our second appointment. No call, no show! Then never spoke to me again. The contractor version of ghosting! How incredibly rude after I was understanding of him needing to reschedule. I had to leave work early to try and get to our appt., a phone call or SOMETHING would be polite and professional. I suppose if he actually shows up and acts like a professional he might be worth your time based on his other reviews. I will never contact this business again. read more

After a few weeks of calling and emailing (on our part), we heard they were waiting on a plumbing number but the quote would be ready soon. Another round of calls and emails with no response. It's been almost 2 months since they came out and we never got the quote we requested. Super disappointing! read more

Stephen was my general contractor for a complete attic conversion on our beautiful 1892 home off Mississippi Ave. It was an empty attic space, with no flooring, insulation, open rafters etc that I was hoping to convert to a master suite with a bathroom and walk in closet. His initial bid came in lower than the others and so we went with him since we were on a tight budget. I am thrilled to say that he did our beautiful home justice. Every time we came up against an obstacle from the city, or a design issue missed by the architect, or any slew of issues involved in a huge project in an old home, Stephen kept me calm, and always presented a solution that worked. I had wanted a deck off the space, but we couldn't figure out how do it. Stephen creatively thought of a deck that would wrap around our existing beautiful mimosa in the backyard keeping our shade in the summer but giving me the private outdoor space I wanted. At the last minute (like 2 weeks before project completion last minute)- I came up with the idea of adding a kitchenette with a sink, etc, and Stephen added it on for a ridiculously low price since the project had taken longer than expected, handled the brief protest from the city, hand stained all the wood and ended the project on a fabulous note in doing so. My aunt says you can get 2/3 things from a contractor-speed, quality craftsmanship, and affordability. The project did take longer than expected, however the beautiful craftsmanship, incredible attention to detail, and coming in on budget have absolutely sold me on Longhouse Construction. The space has since become an Air B and B, and all our 5 star reviews speak to the beautiful design of the space. I am hiring him on another project for a different home I own and know he will take wonderful care of it of another old Portland home. We highly recommend Longhouse Construction!!!!! read more
