This spring I realized that I needed to have the facia and siding of my house caulked/scraped and…read morerepainted. I was able to reach the other sides of my house myself on the ladder to get the job done, but the southwest side of the house was a significantly higher up, due to the slope of my property. I reached out to countless contractors, painters and handymen over the summer to see if anyone was interested/available, and had struck out. Contractors were either already busy, or not interested in the small-ish project (or just didn't respond at all). I had started to price out how much it would cost for me to rent a utility trailer to pick up some rented scaffolding and do the project myself. Then, a friend recommended Straight Arrow Construction. I checked out the website, confirmed there was adequate licensing/insurance on file with the state, and reached out via email. Lon responded a short time later, and stated he was interested in the project, and could complete it within the timeframe I was hoping for (about a month out). The price was reasonable (about $100 more than it would have cost me to rent a utility trailer and scaffolding) and we agreed on some tentative dates that my small-ish project could be squeezed in between other already scheduled projects. Lon arrived on the pre-discussed day, was friendly, and got the job done in about 5 hours (including set up and tear down). He did a great job, and even went above and beyond to caulk/paint areas that he saw needed it and were slightly outside of the area we had discussed. H&H took care of a number of items interior and exterior on our home last year. They excelled in a…read morenumber of ways. Firstly, scheduling: time was tight as we also had a furnace replacement that had to go on. So driveway time and interior access had to be coordinated. Secondly, knowledge of the arts & crafts construction. They replaced what was needed with period-accurate pieces which, though custom sourced, were sensibly priced. Thirdly, they scaled the project appropriately - doing minimal invasiveness on the exterior, taking advantage of existing structures on the interior work. Finally, the subs (fencing, windows, drywall, gutters) they used for the items they don't do themselves proved to be professional, timely, and competitively priced. In the end the total came in substantially under the estimate and we were very happy with the results.

Hired this company as part of a state home modification so unfortunately could not fire them part…read moreway through. $22,000 for ceiling removal with asbestos abatement, sound dampening and a new soffit. It was weeks of trying to avoid doing contractual work, add fees, calling me names, hanging up the phone on me before the first crew finally walked off of the job in front of the company owner. No apology provided to me, but after significant negotiation they did agree to hire a subcontractor to fix their work. Unfortunately this meant that they sanded their texture work and did not seal the ductwork first and refused to put up plastic in the doorway. I had to put up plastic and then spent 30 hours cleaning my home once I figured out what the air quality issue was. I have a disability and am prone to respiratory infections which is what I was diagnosed with following this event. The new crew told me that the soffit the previous crew built was too crooked to fix but I wouldn't notice it. They decided that they completed the project and the problem was the ductwork underneath the soffit. They want thousands more to replace my ductwork and build a new soffit. I cannot find their electrical license online although they did electrical work. The light fixture they installed will not turn off and they will not hire an electrician to fix their work. This was supposed to be a home modification project to help my disabled son--a fact that they have had no regard for throughout the project.
