It is National Donut Day and I wanted to try someplace local and popular. There are a LOT of highly rated local donut places in the area, but I've heard a lot of great things about Long's. And everything I heard was true. I will preface by saying I don't eat a lot of donuts. But every once in awhile, I will indulge. The outside of the place is very cute and there is plenty of parking for as busy as they are. They are very busy, but the service is excellent. Now I will start by saying they are CASH ONLY, and I did not notice an ATM, so make sure you have cash before you get there. I probably saw between 30-40 varieties of donuts & pastries. Now the biggest downside was they have huge plastic coverings over the counter due to protection from Covid. I applaud them for safety, but you can't see the donuts on the back wall, and they only have a small, hand printed menu. They really need a clear plastic barrier, so you can see the donuts better. I can only eat about three donuts at the most. I got a glazed twist, a Bavarian Cream, and a maple iced cake donut. The maple donut was by far my favorite. The glazed twist was also really good. Now the Bavarian Cream was actually a Boston Cream, because Bavarian Cream Donuts do not have chocolate on top. It was fine, but I also prefer a darker chocolate icing, so, I wouldn't order that one again. But I highly recommend this place, because the donuts taste fresh, they are reasonable, and you're supporting a local business. read more

Fitting that my 100th Yelp review is for Long's-an Indianapolis institution. There's a reason why that white, nondescript box brings smiles to all who see it. They have experienced the goodness that is flaky, yeast glazed donut. Best eaten while warm, but easily warmed up in a microwave, the glazed donuts are like a sugar filled hug. But if glazed donuts aren't your thing, they have cake donuts, frosted cupcakes, brownies, and pies. Long's also has anisette cookies at time as well, which are difficult to find. My coworkers begrudgingly, but secretly happily eat a Long's donut when I bring a box to share. I grab a chocolate dipped yeast donut for myself. Stop in and try one for yourself. read more

Long's Bakery has two locations in Indy, one on the Westside and a Southside location. Both are incredibly popular and well loved for their donuts and pasteries. I recently found out the Southside Long's offers several bakery items the Westside store doesn't carry. Thanks to a friend, I was introduced to the Chocolate Cheese Cake. The Chocolate Cheese Cake doesn't have a graham cracker crust but made with their pastry crust. Quite different but so tasty and it was devoured quickly. The mini peach and apple pies are terrific plus the perfect size. They keep me from indulging in a full size pie and no temptation lingering at home. The standard glazed yeast, chocolate iced yeast, alligators and blueberry cake donuts are a huge hit at our house. Now I'll be driving to the Southside for new treats the Westside (Tremont & West 16th St.) doesn't carry. The bakery is cash only which I find is a problem when I sporadically pop in and forget to check the cash situation. The lines are usually long and move quickly but they do have several slower times throughout the day. The Southside store does have a busy parking lot which the Westside is street parking only. I made the mistake of parking in the front and had trouble backing out. The history alone can confirm how delicious and loved the treats are. Whether you're ordering a special occasion cake or just grabbing breakfast, I suggest you try Long's Bakery if you've never been. There are some wonderful options available for satisfying your cravings for pastry. On my recent visit, I avoided the long lines by arriving around noon. There were plenty of options left to choose from. So, while I waited, I made mental notes of some of the pastries I was interested in. Before long, I was helped by one of the staff who walked along the opposite side of the counter with me after I let her know I wanted a small box to go. My selections included an apple crisp (nice bite-sized pieces of apple inside), cherry crisp (both crisps were glazed with a white powdered sugar based icing), an apple fries roll (more cakey with a cinnamon apple flavor), an iced lemon danish (large with a generous tart lemon center), and a couple of glazed yeast donuts (just because I knew my wife would appreciate them.) All were quite good! So, why not 5 stars? Well, a few things were noticeable. First, this is a cash only business. I understand that most of the regulars know that, but I will admit I was trying to keep a running total in my mind on my purchase because I only had so much cash on me. I could see this being a problem for an early morning customer who was short on cash. Second, the parking is available in a lot that is on three sides of the business (I think), but the space on the front is kind of tight for backing out, especially if any cars are passing behind. Finally, the options here seemed to be mostly standard donuts and pastries, with some cakes available. Compared to some bakeries like the Heidelburg Haus or Gallery Pastry, there options were basic. Think of it as the difference between a steak house and a burger joint, or a chef and a cook. Both can have good food, just on different levels. I've been coming to this Southport location since I was little. My dad grew up right off of Derbyshire road which is with in walking distance to Long's. The quality is consistent. Baked fresh donuts, cakes, pies, cookies, brownies devoured by loyal followers everyday! The icings and glazes they make are so fresh. Try the sugar cookies with icing if you're able to snag one. My personal favorite is the Bavarian cream donut. It has a great chocolate icing on top and a lot of the Bavarian cream inside. They don't skimp like some donut chains do. If you have ever had a traditional strudel then you know the cream cheese one is top notch. Lots of cream cheese in between flaky strudel crust and topped with lots of icing. Every time I go there I keep telling myself to buy a Long's mug. I forgot this time. I will though! This Long's location busy. That's always a good sign though. If your busy it must be good. The employees are like a well oiled machine though. They keep the line moving and customers are entering and exiting like a revolving door. I finally was able to make it to Long's after hearing the hype around it for years and I was underwhelmed by my experience. The staff was friendly and even offered me a free doughnut so I could sample what they had to offer. I got an assortment of a dozen doughnuts and there was nothing that stood out to me about them.
