4 birds space - north side of The Garage
Emily H.

So happy to have 4 Birds in The Garage! Their space is well stocked and fits into the flow of the food hall nicely. They offer a variety of treats and baked goods from cookies (including gluten free options!) to cake to kolaches. Try their spent grain crackers and house made granola too! And don't forget to check the cooler if you're thirsty or in need of some tiramisu. Breakfast wraps are also offered in the morning and they have a great coffee set up. Time to put 4 birds in my regular coffee stop rotation

Kolache

I stopped in and got a chai latte, iced of course and a Kolache which the attendant said was a newer item for them. The had one which was Chicago dog inspired but I chose the apple which I warmed up this morning for breakfast. So good! Light and flaky with sweet apples in the center. I also grabbed some cookies, both peanut butter and peanut butter with chocolate chip. Dense, soft and chewy. Stop by this spot when in The Garage or Bottleworks area!

I love a good breakfast burrito especially at a coffee shop where I can grab and go. The chicken chorizo burrito is absolutely amazing! The sauce on the side adds a nice chipotle kick, and the chicken chorizo is super flavorful!

We've loved this bakery since we discovered it at the summer farmers market a few years ago. From their unique and healthy cookies to muffins to espresso, they have great options for everyone. The attendants are always kind and patient. Happy to finally have access to them on the regular with this new brick and mortar spot!

Salted chocolate chip, oatmeal maple pecan, mint fudge

I first heard of 4 Birds when a friend raved about their Farmer's Market breakfast sandwiches, which are unique and incredibly delicious. Now they have a retail space in the Garage Food Hall that I recently checked out for a Yelp elite event. The space is beautiful and has a really nice sized area with tables and chairs. The menu seems geared mainly at coffee and baked goods. There is a breakfast wrap, but no sandwiches. They do have a nice selection of interesting cookie flavors and gluten free options. I was given 3 complimentary cookies including salted chocolate chip, mint fudge, and oatmeal maple pecan. I purchased a peanut butter cookie and chocolate fudge cookie. Sadly, I found the cookies disappointing. The oatmeal maple pecan was the best one. The others were lacking a bit. Almost like they are trying to be a healthier cookie, but not super tasty or healthy. The salted chocolate chip was not as soft as I was expecting ,and I did not think it was chocolatey enough. The peanut butter cookie had a nice texture, but could have been more peanut buttery. The chocolate fudge cookie almost had the texture of a no bake cookie, but not as satisfying. It did seem to have a hint of maybe coconut, but it was not very chocolatey. Overall, I think the space is adorable. It would be a great spot to meet a friend for coffee or grab coffee if you're in the area. Perhaps some of their other pastry items like muffins or coffee cake are better, but I'm not sure the cookies are worth the 4.25/cookie price plus the cost and trouble of finding parking.

Blondie, and cranberry orange white chocolate muffin.

This is a great local bakery, that helps feed the city via their products that make it to all the coffee shops around town. The cookies, blondies, muffins are great. Almost as sweet as the amazing people that work there.

A few notes first... 1. Yes, you're in the right spot even though it looks like you're parking in an alley 2. Ring the doorbell 3. Get ready to order 1 of everything! I had so much trouble deciding that I legit ordered 2 of each cookie. The cranberry cinammon makes you feel healthy while you cheat . And the chocolate chip is the best I've had to date

The smell of fresh baked goods hits you and your mouth starts to water! Mike greeted me and told me about 4 Birds Bakery, where they distribute their products and that they plan to open a full retail spot soon. I will be visiting that retail spot when it happens! The focaccia donut was a delicious Yelp specific treat! Fluffy, soft, and wonderful flavors. I got the sea salt chocolate chip cookies and it might be one of the best cookies I've ever had. I don't say that lightly. It's crisp on the outside with a soft center and the flavor is spot on. I will be looking for these cookies at Joes Butcher when I go back next time!

I didn't know we could walk in and buy baked goods! You can also order online (to make sure you can get what you want). I can't say enough good things about their cookies and I was excited to learn about their crackers and how they were created. I also didn't know they had candles (who doesn't want their house to smell like an amazing bakery??) Definitely check this place out- staff is so friendly, parking is easy along Fulton and products are amazing.

Sorry, but... the "4 Birds" chocolate chip cookie was dry, stale, and salty. I took one bite and tossed it. I spent $5 for that experience.

Bacon making class: overall I am glad I did the class, but think there are some things that could change. The information provided at the beginning of the class didn't flow the best, and used a lot of terms I didn't understand- knowing your audience is important. We were told we would get 1.5lbs bacon, and .5lbs bacon bits. When picking up the bacon, we only got the bacon, and none of the bits. This needs to be updated on the class description. Sandwiches: we tried a goose, and a batalli. The goose was good- nothing spectacular. I was a fan of the batalli- nice amount of mayo, appropriate spice, and good amount of meat/cheese. Would definitely get the batalli next time. Overall, I enjoy the sandwiches, think the sandwich class could be improved.

You can also park in the gravel lot across the road. It was raining pretty heavily so we got wet but wasn't a far dash. The counter is like any deli with the items displayed in the cold case. You can browse the various freezers or shelves for items like picked veggies, canned fish or spreads. It was fun to see that you could buy everything needed for a picnic or impromptu lunch! We got sandwiches to go as well as locally baked cookies. I tried the recommendation for a vegetarian sandwich. It was nice and crusty and had some good flavor. I might create my own next time, but theirs was good and had lots of flavor! My friend was new to Indianapolis and really liked the options. She said she would be back and so will we. They also do tasting events and other things so we might check out one of their offerings. A fun local spot!

There were a few designs to choose from: a lobster, an oyster, and a fish, from what I can recall. She also introduced me to our gracious host for the evening, Nolan, who was running the show. Nolan is a big ball of energy and a joy to be around. He set the vibes to light, fun and whimsical and I really appreciated that. Everyone moved around the room freely, visiting all of the tasting stations that were set up with whimsical, hand-drawn decorations on the paper tablecloths (much like that seen on the Pinterest commercial). There were 6 different ones, all with multiple options at each station. I tried sardines, razor clams, pickled ramps, an entire array of Fishwife tinned items, mustards, seafood dip that is made in-house, oysters, the list goes on. They also introduced me to an Indiana-based soda company call Bollygood, with Indian-inspired flavors. I love, love, love the Lime Basil Cumin flavor. I wasn't too sure about that combo, but it was delicious and super-refreshing. It smelled like a taco...but didn't taste like one! The Lemon Mango Turmeric was really good too. I also enjoyed the demonstrations lead by Chef Amber. She also has a light that was a pleasure to witness. I could just tell that she really loves what she does. While she does not work there, she still gets to come back for the fun stuff (her words). She has been a huge influence on the whole tinned fish movement at the smokehouse and develops recipes and curates these events alongside Nolan and the team. I loved both recipes that were shared with us and her enthusiasm to show us how we can elevate the tinned fish beyond the can. We mingled. We made friends. I spent a pretty penny on several of the delicious items that I was introduced to. I look forward to attending more events here in the future.

I've driven by the Bakery, so many times and wanted to stop, but I was always in a hurry. My sister and I went in and we each got a dessert and because it was four in the afternoon, we got decaffeinated coffee. The refills were free and we sat at the little counter like we were at a diner and enjoyed everything about this iconic little bakery. The decor is a eclectic. We just took our time and looked around and laughed at so many signs and odd little things that were placed over the years. On the way to the ladies room, you will find out that the gentleman that started the restaurant fought in one of the world wars, and you will see his worn out shoes, his uniforms, his letters of accommodation and Learn his story. Now let's get to the desserts. We shared some type of a wonderful lemon pastry and a black forest cake. Best black forest cake I've ever had. Savored every bite. We were able to buy the last of the springle's that they had made from Christmas. FYI, if you don't like black licorice don't buy Springerle's but you can only get them at Christmas because it's a German tradition and they won't work in the summertime because of the humidity. Things that I learned that day. We saw that they had a dinner menu with a huge variety of different bratwurst and assorted sausages that we would like to try sometime. Tonight, I had a little time before a nearby film screening and decided I would finally drop in. First off, I instantly loved the vibe of this strip center location that's not too far down from Trader Joe's. This location is pretty solidly accessible with nearby accessible parking, appropriate curb-cuts, and a layout that I had almost no difficulty maneuvering. In case it's not obvious, Penzey's Spices specializes in spices. They also offer online ordering (free shipping with $49+). I have to admit I'm no expert when it comes to spices. I'm also not the most adventurous eater due to a fragile system. However, I've been venturing out of my comfort zone lately and I got lots of ideas from my visit to Penzey's. I have no idea how many spices they carry. It's a lot. I found the prices quite reasonable. I found items that I thought "I want to try that" and I mostly found the prices at such a good point that I would be willing to give it a try. Of course, some are more than others. That's life. Employees were friendly. The overall energy of the place was light and hopeful. They also offer gift boxes, trial bags, and accessories. However, when it comes down to it this is really a spice store and boy do they have amazing options. I believe in terms of corporate that Penzey's is based in Wisconsin. I'm just grateful they're here. They add such a spark to the Castleton area, and they seem perfect as a companion to the nearby Trader Joe's. It took me way too long to get here. It won't take me that long to get back.
