Cadillac decaf coffee, i've never really felt passionately about decaffeinated coffee until I visited Heidelberg. I've driven by the Bakery, so many times and wanted to stop, but I was always in a hurry. My sister and I went in and we each got a dessert and because it was four in the afternoon, we got decaffeinated coffee. The refills were free and we sat at the little counter like we were at a diner and enjoyed everything about this iconic little bakery. The decor is a eclectic. We just took our time and looked around and laughed at so many signs and odd little things that were placed over the years. On the way to the ladies room, you will find out that the gentleman that started the restaurant fought in one of the world wars, and you will see his worn out shoes, his uniforms, his letters of accommodation and Learn his story. Now let's get to the desserts. We shared some type of a wonderful lemon pastry and a black forest cake. Best black forest cake I've ever had. Savored every bite. We were able to buy the last of the springle's that they had made from Christmas. FYI, if you don't like black licorice don't buy Springerle's but you can only get them at Christmas because it's a German tradition and they won't work in the summertime because of the humidity. Things that I learned that day. We saw that they had a dinner menu with a huge variety of different bratwurst and assorted sausages that we would like to try sometime. This is a nice place to visit for authentic German food. It's more of a cafe than a full restaurant. They don't serve everything German food related ( ex: sauerbraten, rouladen, schnitzel) , but what they do offer is quality. Their bakery is wonderful and offers tasty cakes and pastries. Heidelberg Haus aka "The German Bakery" is quite the experience. It's a charming kitschy restaurant that's been around since the 1960's. Seating options are limited to regular 2-4 top tables, a counter with swivel chairs to sit at but there are no booths. Admire the extensive pastry displays and a sprawling gift shop while you dine. Look around and you'll find sassy, snarky and silly German signage--novelty gifts, groceries and other fun items to keep you entertained while waiting for your food. I really like their stove top potato salad served warm with a hard boiled egg and bacon. Their mustard is good enough to get some to go. So much flavor and great texture in everything! Best to avoid coming on weekends. It's hard to snag a table at peak times for meals. The staff is friendly but the service is on the slower side. Plan on spending at least an hour there if you're sitting down for a meal. The line to checkout is usually pretty long. There should have been someone at both registers on a Saturday afternoon because the line blocks the path to the other areas of the restaurant. We were here today to celebrate a birthday and waited for someone to bring a lighter for the candle for the cake we got up to get ourselves and were promised a birthday song but they got too busy to follow through. Heidelberg Haus in Indianapolis is eclectic and full of character. The restaurant tables are scattered throughout the store, creating a unique atmosphere. I typically go for the Number 16 (the currywurst) which is sausage with curry ketchup , and it was really flavorful, it felt like eating an authentic meal made with fresh ingredients. The portions are good and the price is very reasonable. The mashed potatoes are incredible, rich and classic German style. For dessert, the hazelnut ice cream with coffee was such a treat, and I was excited to try it because it isn't always available. The bakery is the highlight. I always get a slice of Black Forest cake, but I love trying new cake flavors, cheesecakes, and cookies when I visit. Heidelberg Haus is perhaps the most hidden gem I've discovered in the entire city. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. They far exceeded my expectations. I love discovering a fun a unique experience, and that is exactly what you'll get at Heidelberg Haus. A fun German restaurant, bakery and shop, they don't really understand the word: restraint. It's a lot! It can be overwhelming. And honestly, that's normally not my jam. But at Heidelberg, it just works. I felt like I was in an antique shop that makes sausages and sells delicious cakes. And if you choose to eat at the restaurant be prepared to sit in some random, secluded corner, which I found to be lovely. It would make such a fun little date or family adventure. Take a stroll through the shop and purchase German treats or count how many gnomes you can find (there's a LOT!). For me, though, that bakery takes the cake! ;) Please, no one tell them they could double their prices! I picked up a German chocolate cake for my mom's birthday and I thought they rang up the wrong price. I went ahead and got some chocolate goodies and pound cake. I had heard about this restaurant for years, but had never been there. We wanted to try something new, and I was in the mood for German sausage, so we decided to give it a try. It's one of the most charming restaurants I've been in, more of a café, surrounded by a gift shop brimming with German tchotchkes. I'm still trying to collect my thoughts about Heidelberg Haus. I like it! But also, this place is a lot. It's a visual overload. First, there are gnomes everywhere. There's a 9-foot gnome outside named Hans, and the gnomes just get smaller and more plentiful as you step inside the cafe/bakery/store. Around every corner, you'll find something: gnome tchotchkes, beer steins, German magazines, VHS tapes, jars of herring, dolls wearing dirndls, a freezer full of bread loves below a painted image of a hobo. You can stay for a while and sit at the restaurant's bar counter, which has a few seats. The menu is limited -- mostly brats, knockwurst and a few sandwiches with chips. If bellying up to the counter isn't for you, you can choose to sit at one of the random tables placed all around the store. Maybe you want to sit at the table next to the fez-wearing monkey holding a puppy wearing a green feathered hat? That's probably where I'd choose to sit, if I were dining in. I just stopped by to grab some cookies for a picnic. Heidelberg Haus has dozens of different kinds of cookies, as well as danishes, tortes, cakes, rolls and kuchen. Their savory offerings include big German pretzels, loaves of bread and yeasty rolls. I got maybe 15 different cookies for around $8, which is a bargain! This is an absolute institution in the world of German food and culture in Indianapolis. It has been open since the late 1960s and honestly, I feel like some of the things they have for sale may have been there since then. The store is a bit of a maze through different areas selling different knickknacks, shirts, German cultural items, and even VCR tapes. They have a nice room with a bakery selling German cakes, as well as tables throughout the location where you can sit and order food mostly of the sausage and wurst variety. From the festive Bavarian music to the murals and gnomes on the exterior, it's such a jolly and fun experience. Our last two visits included exploring the baked treats, partaking in their famous Springerle cookies and purchasing items for friends. The staff is so friendly and patient with kiddos. A true gem and a great experience. My friend raved about this place and I didn't even know it existed! I am so happy I stopped in. They have like 5 stools when you first walk in, that's where we sat at, but they have more tables to offer around the restaurant. If you like trinkets, this will be heaven to you. There are so many fun and cute things to purchase. We ordered two meals and 3 desserts. I tried the kielbasa dinner with potato salad, pickles and bread. Simple and delicious! I am so sad I haven't been here before now. Had to come up that way for something else and seen this cute little place and decided to stop in after checking out the yelp reviews. When you first walk in it seems a bit overwhelming as there is a lot of Knick knacks and gnomes you can buy in the back right corner there's a little grocery area with authentic German items. If you go to the left there's a bakery and cafe with a few little seats. We got a few bakery items to try and might I say they by far have the best cake I've ever ate in my life. The lady behind the counter was super helpful and friendly. She even gave a recommendation on a cake they don't typically have and to try it. The baker makes a couple cakes everyday however most of the time what they have is whatever the baker felt like making that day. Chocolate lemon layer cake and it did not disappoint. It was moist and well balanced with sweet and tart. We also got the Black Forest and that was equally as delicious I want to go back for the whole cake to be honest. The layers were perfectly even and the cherry and chocolate complimented each other well I did not care for the strawberry rhubarb pastry it was too dry and had a slight burnt taste to it. Not really for me. This place has been here probably all my life so I decided to try. It's very crowded, only a few little tables. Lots of little knickknacks and gnomes as decore. One of there servers was really nice, the others not so much. Don't know if they are prejudice or just not freindly... both the servers and the patrons. Definitely not a friendly or welcoming place. I was driving through Indianapolis with a friend who spent several years in Germany, so I thought it would be a treat to try Heidelberg Haus. I was right! It's a cute little German bakery with a cafe and store. According to my German friend, it is very authentic and it looks as such. I enjoyed the currywurst, which is a brat (knockwurst) drizzled in a curry ketchup mix. The spice from the curry mixed well with the sweetness of the ketchup. The potato salad was okay but I didn't care for the rye bread, which felt cold and dry for a bakery known for freshly baked goods. It was fun to grab a piece of German chocolate cake and some Milka chocolates for the road. Heidelberg Haus is not a tourist trap. If I'm ever stein (stayin) in Indianapolis again, I'll be back! read more

I have been eating cake at this joint my entire life. My family's birthday cakes have always been from here. Just stopping in for some cake when I'm back home visiting is always a treat. The servers are usually nice and friendly (the VERY few times I've seen a server not be particularly friendly it was quite clear that the place was busy and the server was simply having a rough day; it's so rare that it's not even worth mentioning; I noticed somebody here gave the restaurant a low rating and wrote, completely out of the blue, "I don't know if they're prejudice or what"--looking at the profile picture of the woman who wrote that, I have to ask, Prejudiced against what??? Just a stupid comment from a person who's obviously seeking attention). A lot of people have mentioned how there's tons of stuff in the joint. That's true and it's part of the charm. There is limited seating, but I like that. If I'm alone, I sit at the counter. If I'm with friends and/or family, I sit at one of the tables or the nice, cozy private room in the back. This is one of the only things in Indianapolis that has not changed very much throughout my lifetime. I appreciate that. The city has somehow even managed to ruin the art museum, which had been another place I visited any time I came home (but now, sadly, it only makes me angry to see how they've destroyed a once gorgeous museum). There is something to be said about the reliability of tradition. This place has existed for nearly 60 years. It's a small business that survived the pandemic. It's made it through multiple recessions. That's because the products sold within never fail to deliver. Make sure you try a piece of cake with the rum fudge layer. Guten Tag! Last time I was here they didn't have the giant gnome outside you could take your picture with. Now they have one up against the pretty Cafe Heidelberg mural. This place will allow you to transported to Bavaria without even leaving Indiana! It's such a cool place! I love all the steins, danishes, pretzels, German shepherd's and all the other German knickknacks they have around. If you want an apron with you looking like you're wearing a lederhosen they have those! More than one design also. Gnomes? Oh, you need to take someone who likes gnomes they will love all the gnomes around this place. I actually bought the bumper sticker last time that said, "a grouchy German is a sauerkraut." The pastry section is so beautiful Black Forest cake, red velvet, you name they have it. The way they decorate them is really pretty. They sell danishes and pretzels and seem to sell out. Heidelberg Haus is located next door to Popeye's with its own separate parking lot. My husband and I came by here on a Tuesday morning, around 10:15 am. We took some photos with the giant gnome on the side of the restaurant and then walked inside. This store has such a large collect of souvenirs (I guess you can call them that) that is very random that includes funny shirts, German figurines that hang from the ceiling (which we ended up purchasing one, lol), canned foods and chocolate bars from Germany, lots of stationary German figurines, gnomes, steins, random signs, etc. But the real reason why you want to come here is for the food and their bakery. We were helped by a very friendly employee who told us to sit anywhere after we ordered. Then she would bring out our food wherever we end up choosing to sit. We ended up ordering: Farmer's Brat, Double, $9.88 prior to tax- My husband ordered two of these (you can also order a single for $2.39 less) that is a fried sausage that comes with potato salad, half of a hard boiled egg, 2 slices of pickles, bread and butter. I thought my husband's brat was good but plain in comparison to mine. He enjoyed his meal. The Heidelberg Haus is an Indianapolis classic. But I hadn't been since probably the 80s. We went recently, and I have to say it hasn't changed at all in the best of ways. They still offer fantastic German foods and other imports. The staff are still full of character, friendly, and inviting. And the atmosphere is just completely unique. From austere history to zany inanity, you can find every topic under the sun on the Heidelberg Haus's walls. I had a black coffee, and my friend tried a more advanced speciality coffee. And we shared a piece of bee sting cake. All three were excellent, especially the bee sting cake. The Heidelberg Haus is more of a destination than a restaurant or gift shop. Very hearty and satisfying, and I especially enjoyed the potato salad. As a meal bonus, we ordered a pretzel and shared it. The mustard they have on the table is HOT HOT HOT! A GOOD HOT! I compared it to St. Elmo's Steakhouse shrimp cocktail sauce, (horseradish wise!) So good! I wanted to buy some of it, but they were out of retail jars. I will have to go back just for the mustard!! A buffet of sweets! I wanted to try everything! But I settled for a dozen cookies, 3 pastries, baclava, and some marzipan chocolates. Everything was reasonably priced. Everyone was so nice and I enjoyed looking around at the knick-knacks and candy. It was a really cool place. That being said, I didn't like almost anything I got. The cookies are dry and crispy and the other things didn't have much flavor. The baclava was normal baclava that you can get just about anywhere. It was a good experience.
