All optometrists are NOT created equal. LSE is has it figured out. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. The experience feels truly personal. Dr. Packer is a cool dude, someone who can have a solid conversation with his patients unlike many doctors who seem to lack any sort of social awareness. That being said, Dr. Packer knows what he's talking about. Turns out he was a Longhorn and did his post graduate work at the University of Houston (whose optometry school ranks amongst the best in the nation). His office is state-of-the-art. In fact, its been so long since my last eye exam I didn't recognize any of the gadgets he used to test my vision. Thank god he had this new "poof-less" eye pressure tester (I was dreading this part). Needless to say my visit was far more painless than I anticipated. Dr. Packer hooked me up with a sweet new pair of Jhane Barnes reading glasses, and I also picked up a sweet pair of Maui Jim sunglasses. The selection of frames is AWESOME! The whole experience, from the iPad in the waiting room to the complementary gourmet coffee, was first class (the pleasant drive past the Barton Creek golf course was icing on the cake). This beautiful accessible office is staffed by very friendly people. Dr Packer has been my optimologist for several years. I recently had a painful problem with one eye. I happened to be driving by his office and walked in to make an appointment to have it checked. They found time to see me immediately. This outfit is really good. With all the amazing reviews that I read, I was expecting to be oversold. I had an appointment this past week, and they met every expectation identified in the reviews. The equipment was high tech. I didn't have to be dilated, and I didn't have to spend 20 minutes with "number 1 or number 2" questions. The doc had digital pics of the outside topography and the inside image of my eye that he showed me and explained. He dialed in my prescription based on the "barn test" (my description) and showed me a couple really close options - it took about 3 minutes to identify my prescription. Good stuff. Now, I normally don't write reviews - but after my visit I just had to! Over the past 9 years I have found myself, like I'm sure many do, going to the same few optometrists out of habit. Sure, I liked them but I was never that happy with the quality of their eye exams. FINALLY, I sought change and am so glad that I did. Hands down, Lone Star Eye is the best optometrist I have seen. The entire staff there is fantastic. They are friendly and engaging, yet very knowledgeable and professional - a combination that's hard to find! The facility is state-of-the-art. They have Ipads for you to use while waiting as well as a nintendo to keep the kiddos busy. The eye exam itself was painless. They use technology that I hadn't even seen before! Apparently, those "poof" eye pressure tests are a thing of the past. Here, they use a "poof-less" apparatus that is way less awkward and more accurate. LOVE that. Also, Dr. Packer was great about explaining my exam results to me in layman's terms that I could actually understand. Most importantly for us ladies, the frame selection is FABULOUS. I have never been anywhere where I loved so many of their frames. I had to have someone from work drive me to the eye doctor! Dr Packer is the only doctor in Austin who was able to fix my eyes. I havent had any problems in close to a year. A few months after noticing differences in vision between my left and right eyes my girlfriend finally got me to bite the bullet and get things checked out. The experience at Lone Star was great, somehow taking the sting off of finally needing glasses and taking great care of me both during and after the appointment. Dr. Packer was great, explaining everything in detail in terms that were simple for the layman but in depth enough to satisfy my desire to understand such an important issue as my vision. Stephanie helped me select some frames and I am glad I ended up going with her recommendations which have grown on me to the extent that I now prefer to wear my glasses instead of dreading it. I've been back a few times, for some cleaning solution and when my glasses were stepped on and the reception is always friendly, they remember your name and treat you with courtesy. The folks at Lone Star Eye explained everything they were doing as part of my exam, what to expect and what the technology was all about, etc. Dr. Packer looked at my eye scans and explained to me everything he was seeing on a giant screen (and showed me examples of pathologies he was looking for and not finding). I visited Lone Star Eye because I had a coupon from Living Social. I was really very impressed with Dr. Casey Packer and the facility. However, the prices were extremely high (even with a coupon) and his staff did a very bad job at follow-up. It took me three weeks to get my glasses and then I had to call them. I was never called and informed that there had been a problem and one of the lenses had to be re-done. Dr. Packer had told me that a member of his staff would follow up with me the very next week on how my new prescription in the contacts was working for me and order a supply of them if I was pleased. This never happened. Again, I had to call them! read more

Dr. Packer, who introduces himself as just Casey, is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does and very personable and relational. He acknowledged my hesitancy about becoming a glasses wearer, patiently debunked common myths, and explained how to make my new prescription work best for me. Justin then helped me peruse different style options exhaustively and had a great sense of humor. I appreciate how everyone understood my limited budget and were patient and flexible in working with me given my constraints. I, too, found this practice through Living Social, and it was the first time with any voucher program that I did not feel like a second class citizen or feel as though I was receiving mediocre service because of buying a voucher.
