I am not totally sure how I feel yet about Howerton Eye clinic. While I really liked Dr Kelly, it is nearly impossible to get someone to answer the phone at this location. Very frustrating. Always have to leave several messages to get a reply. Also, I am disappointed that I have not received my new glasses after nearly 3 weeks. No one has been available in optical since Friday. I'm sure they will now closed for the holiday and I'll have to wait another week. Melanie has been great, but I guess her hands are tied. Life is really altered when you can't see properly. Howerton could be great, but they really need to up their game with service and communication. read more

I left Howerton Eye Clinic after they messed up my eyeglass prescription on two separate occasions. I didn't mind the first time because I had my reading glasses remade for free. The second time, I minded because it cost me money. I couldn't return bifocals at Resolution Eye Care. Resolution Eye Care gave me a store credit for $20, but I don't intend on going back there. I'm out $20 due to Howerton Eye Clinic's mistake. I'm now at Mann Eye Institute, where they have better customer service at the front desk and medical assistants. Their building is nicer as it was recently remodeled. They have their own optician store (not third party), and they accept VSP. read more

As I sit here in the outer office with at least 7 other patients to be seen, 42 minutes after my scheduled appointment, I wonder how much longer I'll be waiting. And I have to question the quality of treatment I will receive in this cattle call environment. read more

Scott Kelly has to be one of the most rude ophthalmologist I have ever seen. My mother and I came in for an eye exam due to some injuries and when we were seen by him he was short spoken and did not seem interested in the concerns that my mother and I had voiced. My mother had a follow up appointment with him and this time around when she would ask questions, he would cut her off and would not let her speak majority of the times. When she was able to bring up a few of the concerns that she was having with her injured eyes he gave sarcastic answers and by how dismissive he was he made her feel uncomfortable. I've been seeing him for over 10 years and he's helped me navigate through an eye issue called Coates Disease as well as a serious scratched retina that required referral to a specialized eye contacts doctor, which is worked out incredibly well. read more

I saw a physician for contact lenses and got the Rx. I was told I could take the Rx anywhere to get fitted and they would show me how to put them in. Not the case. I've contacted their office multiple times to continue to get the run around on getting contacts and learning to put them in. I've left messages for their manager twice and not received a call back yet even thought vm stated she'll return the call by 5pm. If you want to be in a herd of cattle, go here. (SW Austin location: Dr. Kelly recently): I've been using Howerton for a number of years since arriving in Austin. I originally needed to address the gradual deterioration of vision from cataract surgery done many years ago, far away from Austin at a nationally recognized, premier eye center. There was nothing unusual about the correction required, but it needed a fix. I received an exceptionally competent, no drama fix by the Howerton specialists. All covered under Medicare/Sup insurance. More recently, I've had a dry eye condition. Again, I received exceptionally competent, thoughtful, management of my problem and I was back to normal within a day. Ongoing follow-up and management has been great. I can see no difference between my initial, premium care and the medical services provided from Howerton Eye Clinic. This is exceptional quality care. read more

Allie at Howerton Eye Clinic is an outstanding Optometrist! She is extremely helpful, and knowledgeable about frames, and the most important part, the lenses! I am looking forward to getting my lenses here as I will be getting the best vision care for a very reasonable cost. Allie is helpful on the best styles, yes, but is detail-oriented, and really wants the best for her clients to, obviously see. I have been to many places and I can tell you, technology is here, and friendly customer service is here, and reasonable pricing. So nice to get it all in one place! My wife went to Dr. Kelly at the Howerton Eye Clinic in Austin. She has suffered from severe dry eyes for many years and seen eye specialists. After finishing her last pregnancy she went to Dr. Kelly to see if there are any new treatments to help her (which she has told she couldn't do while pregnant or breastfeeding). He did a quick examination without any of the typical tests that my wife as become accustom to doing in the past. He pretty much dismissed her concerns about her dry eye syndrome and just prescribed some routine over the counter eye drops. Total waste of time and our money. She had to go to another eye doctor who actually gave her good care and put her on a treatment plan. When I complained to the clinic, they pretty much said in a nice way, "tough luck". Be wary of this clinic and this doctor. I guess others have had a good experience but unfortunately not us. read more

I went in for a simple exam to get my contact and glasses prescription tweaked. I paid my copay before the appointment. They ran me through everything and then tried to charge me on my way out for a medical visit. I had to pay more money on my way out because they ran tests that I didn't even ask for after they found out about a rare eye condition that I have (for which I see other eye doctors). Second, they ordered sample contacts for me to try in a contact lens fitting. They never informed me that they came in, so I just sat there waiting for them. Eventually, however, we were able to resolve everything to my satisfaction. Though it took a while, the office manager was very willing to work with me and helped smooth everything over! read more

I made two appointments with them. They made mistakes on both costing me money. The first one was incorrectly scheduled at an incorrect date. I had to pay $50 dollars for it. The second one today, was scheduled at another location, even when I explicitly told them to schedule it at the Southwest Medical Village. I have no car, so I had to pay an uber to get here and find no one to attend me. On top of that, my info was incorrectly input in the system and they had a hard time finding me. What a joke! First time in my life a clinic makes two mistakes in a row. It cost me 2 days of work and around 75 usd because i have no car and have to travel here, plus the money of the incorrectly scheduled appointment. The doctors might be good, but its difficult to get an accurate appointment time with such a bad service. read more

Dr. Hawthorne was cool and her assistant really nice. The front admin was a b*tch though. I also just needed my yearly check up and didn't need a specialist. The admin or whoever I made the appointment with took advantage of me by not referring me to just an optometrist. She was really rude upon arrival and departure of this office... Just a little human consideration would have been nice, I made it very clear just needed a check up. She told me they accepted my insurance but the glasses office connected did not so now I have to drive to a different office for glasses. They referred me to an optometrist that accepted my insurance and glasses coverage....I'm like didn't why didn't you do that in the first place when I called. I pay $150 yearly for my vision coverage so I don't have a co-pay but got stuck with $40 co pay because dr. Hawthorne is a ophthalmologist and attitude from some who doesn't smile to save her life "yeah she's a specialist" Thank you for ruining my day whatever your name was. I wouldn't even be writing this if she showed just the slightest bit empathy. No I won't be back in a year, lazy inconsiderate girl. Can't rely on proactive informative staff, should have research eye doctor specifications lol Dr.'s please share with your admins especially the one I encountered today! O and thanks to the glasses guy that helped me or I wouldn't know where to find glasses that my vision plan covers.. saved me a phone call to my provider! read more
