These people are amazing. I came in with acanthamoeba keratitis, unbeknownst to me. For those of you unfamiliar with it (it's rare), it's excruciatingly painful & can result in cornea transplant or worse. Dr. Broyles immediately diagnosed me & started an intense hourly eye drop regimen. Unfortunately, most people don't get so lucky. It was a tough road, but I can honestly thank her for saving my eye. I'm in a FB group for AK & the majority of those who share, experience physicians that wait much too long to commit to the diagnosis & end up losing their eyesight. Her staff is also wonderful. My father has been a patient of Dr. Cottle off and on for five years. Five years ago he had cataract surgery on both eyes. Everything went well and smoothly with the actual surgery. This year he has some scaring from the cataract surgery a common side effect. Again the treatment of a laser has gone well. I have no complaints on Dr. Cottle and her skills as an eye surgeon. Five stars! Now the cons. Her appointment times are terrible. It doesn't matter why you are there. You will be there for 1.5 hours or longer. Second, issue is billing. Five years ago we had some major issues with our billing. My father is a Medicare with a supplement patient, a common standard for the elderly. It seemed to highly confused the office staff. I am not sure about this round of work. We haven't gotten bills yet. Also do note Dr. Cottle has move her office from Bee Caves Road to HWY 620. Incredible LASIK experience from Dr. Broyles and her team. Have been a contact / glasses wearer for many years, a little leery of LASIK. But, Austin seasonal allergies (which is literally every season) were getting the best of me. Was able to get an appointment for a LASIK eval, during which all members of the staff were extremely patient and knowledgable. I felt the eval was thorough, all potential risks explained. Fortunately, I was a good candidate. Took a few days to consider and then called back to schedule. LASIK procedure itself was a breeze. Great communication before, during and after. In my case, procedure was quick and not uncomfortable. I'm writing this review 1 day post-op, back to normal life and work with 20/15 vision. Crazy, right? Can't recommend them enough. On 06/23/22, my 85 year old father scheduled two eye surgery dates for 7/20/22 and 7/27/22, and went to a consult on 7/6/2022. At the consult, my father was given a list of possible complications and risks associated with the eye surgery, because of this and coupled with the fact that she wasn't super nice, so he didn't trust her, my father chose to cancel the appointments. When he tried to leave, Dr. Cottle and her nurse chased him into the corridor, and made him return to the office. They wouldn't allow him to leave until he paid them a $350 dollar cancellation fee. A cancellation fee for an appointment scheduled for THREE WEEKS LATER! What an incredible scam, and how disgusting do you have to be to hold an elderly man until he pays a ransom??!! On top of this, she charged Medicare and their supplemental insurance. Man, she made out like a bandit. I would give zero stars if I could. Shame on you Dr. Cottle. read more

It's been narly three months since my Lasik procedure -- and I could NOT be happier with the experience, with Dr. Cottle and her incredibly talented, patient, and empathetic team (shout out to Erika especially!!), or with my brand new, wonderfully working 20/20 vision eyes! Since I was 6 years old I needed glasses to see or read anything, and with beyond-terrible vision and a slight stigmatism I always assumed I wouldn't be a good candidate for Lasik. The team at Lake Austin Eye took me step by step through the process, was patient and good humored through the procedure itself, and has been generous, diligent, detail-oriented, and delightful in our post-procedure sessions. 20/10 would recommend, and I'm already working on convincing a couple friends and family members to take the jump... Dr. Cottle preformed bilateral lens replacement on me. The left lens was first and work out good, honestly better than I expected. The problem was the right eye which is/was my dominate eye. From the day of the surgery I have not been able to see with my right eye as well as I could before the lens replacement. This is all after paying almost $2700 more for the "Premium Surgery" which I was told would insure the correct lens. The problem may be the wrong lens. My wife heard immediately after surgery they did not have the correct lens available. I was under sedation and do not remember the conversation, Dr. Cottle denies the incorrect lens was used. Since the initial surgery Dr. Cottle tried corneal ablation which did not improve my vision and made my minor dry eye issue a major problem. Todate I tried contacts and gone to tri-focal glasses with minimal success. In the end Dr. Cottle told me she did not know what the problem was and I should find another doctor to help me. read more

Dr. Chan has been really great, always taking the time to explain everything clearly and listen to my endless questions. The corneal cross-linking procedure I had done just over a year wasn't pleasant, but she was very careful and tried her best to minimize discomfort. This is the worst customer service experience I've ever encountered. I paid $3000 on December 2, 2019, my insurance later paid for the procedure. Today is Jun 9, 2020 and I'm still waiting Lake Austin Eye (LAE) to reimburse me. It's important to note that LAE's errors have made it impossible for me to afford a critical procedure in my other eye. They know the seriousness of my condition and they've shown little concern for me. Here's the short version of my long, well-documented nightmare with LAE. LAE made errors on the claim that they sent to my insurance, but Mayra insisted that my insurance company was the cause of the delay. I called LAE for status countless times over 3 months and they didn't return a single call until I filed a complaint with my insurance company. When LAE finally called, Mayra left me a voicemail saying she spent "literally hours on the phone with (my) insurance company" trying to resolve the matter. She also said they submitted appeals to my insurance company. I called my insurance company the next day. The representative at my insurance company found the problem in 5 minutes, she then called LAE to explain they did wrong. The rep also said that LAE contacted my insurance ONE TIME and NO APPEALS were ever filed. LAE submitted a corrected claim a few days later, and my insurance company immediately approved it. They sent reimbursement to LAE on Feb 26 2020...I haven't received a penny. I sent detailed records of every interaction with LAE to the owners. Shortly afterwards, on April 10, Mayra called to tell me that they sent a check on April 5. Instead of apologizing, she insisted that they called me repeatedly. When I asked "When did you call? Who called me?" she said, "I'm not going to argue with you." Our conversation was limited to her talking at me while refusing to answer questions. In made the entire debacle worse. When our court system emerges from the COVID crisis, I'll have to pursue reimbursement in small claims court. I can't believe it came to this. read more

I went to Dr. Chen and she was good and took time to understand my issues. She was located a ways from my house but it was worth it to see Dr. Chen. However, dealing with the office manager at Lake Austin Eye is a nightmare. First time they charged me my copay which I had already paid to another doctor. Then they would not return my money until they were reimbursed from medicare. I finally had to send an email to the doctor to get my money returned. Then on another occassion they said Medicare rejected the claim which I know was not true because when you are on Medicare you can see on-line when a claim is rejected. I called the office multiple times to talk to the office manager and she does not return calls and when I did get through to her she hung up on me. I just want someone who tells me what the cost is going to be beforehand and then bills me correctly. Recently when I called to refill my eyedrop prescription, they said I had to see the doctor before they would refill the prescription. I had seen the doctor less than a year ago. Then I went to the pharmacy and Lake Austin Eye had called in a refill for the the prescription they had told me they would not refill. Very frustrating. I have now found another eye doctor and am very happy. read more

Worst vision appointment I've ever experienced. Went in for contacts. After an hour and a half, they said I had to come back for a specific "contact" appointment (and technician was rude.) I was charged for the first appointment, and charged again for the second "lense" appointment. After another hour and 45 minutes, while the doctor ran from me to another patient, I had to go back for a third appointment because Dr. Chan "did not understand what I wanted". Terrible business. Also, be sure to ask for cost prior to test because at the end your surgery or recommended procedures may not be covered so the test are unnecessary, if you are not expecting 1000k plus out of pocket. I've been seeing Dr Cottle for several years, mostly for standard eye exams. In my most recent visit, we discovered that my increasingly blurry vision was due to cataracts in both eyes. Dr Cottle recommended "multi-focal intra-ocular lenses" (MF-IOL). The surgery was easy, the recovery has been fast, and the results have been excellent. For the first time in over 25 years, I no longer need glasses of any kind (even reading glasses). I can't recommend Dr Cottle and Lake Austin Eye highly enough for cataract surgery. read more

I have been under the care of Dr. Chan for the last year in relation to consistent inflammation in both eyes. She is an amazing doctor and I have never been more satisfied with the treatment I have received. Before finding my way here I had seen a grand total of 4 ophthalmologists and 3 other specialists and none are even in the same ballpark in regard to patient care. Other doctors couldn't wait to get out of the room and would take no time to listen even when I was coming in weekly complaining that the situation was not improving. Dr. Chan on the other hand listened and we adjusted treatment until we found a winning formula. Though it isn't always perfect, I feel 10x better now then I did 6 months ago. As an RN with 35 + years experience, I was more than a little apprehensive about cataract surgery with correction. (Nurses are not always the best patients). I am now 1 day post op and very pleasantly surprised. I can see out of my right eye for the first time in a couple of years. I have experienced no pain or discomfort and I feel wonderful. The explanation of the procedure was complete and pre/post op care comprehensive. Overall, Dr Cottle, her staff, and the staff at Northwest Surgical Center have provided excellent care. Dr. Chan was the worst doctor I've ever experienced. I hope that Dr. Chan is not treating every patient in the same mistreatment that she has done to me, however, if it were me, my mother or father, my son or daughter, I would seek a better, more competent alternative. After being advised to see a specialist regarding a possible serious & blinding infection, I visited Dr. Chan. She misdiagnosed me for over a week saying I had a bacterial infection with a combination of severe dry eyes. After the symptoms got so severe, she googled a doctor in Houston & told me to go see her to get culture samples of my infection. She put the burden on me to make the appointment with this doctor. I was the one that was able to make this appointment happen quickly, not her. I even contacted Dr. Chan about the pain which she recommended I go to the ER. That was $500 down the drain because there were no specialists that could help- something Dr. Chan should've been aware of. I went to an optometrist in Houston seeking a second opinion & he was able to clean out my eyes & offer medication until I saw my specialist. Luckily, the specialist in Houston was magnificent. I received the medication needed to treat my fungal infection. When I returned to Austin a week later & over 90 minutes of waiting at her office, Dr. Chan stated that she did not trust the Austin labs & that was the reason she sent me to Houston. After having a mishap with my necessary refrigerator medication, I called Dr. Chan for assistance on whether or not to continue with these eye drops that had been left out. She got back to me over 30 hours later. Luckily, I had the Houston pharmacy & specialist respond within hours. When I asked for a refill on my medication, Dr. Chan sent in the wrong prescription. She insisted I call the only pharmacy in Austin that could fill this request & make sure they could complete my request. I called my pharmacy in Houston & got the refill transferred. When I went to pick it up, 6 hours later, Dr. Chan still had not sent in my prescription. I beg you to find another doctor. I've never felt more vulnerable & abused. read more

I was there last week and I would NOT recommend this place at all. I don't think the front office is educated enough to deal with insurance. They are not knowledgeable about options and won't talk about how much money may be involved. Make sure you read every single word that you sign over there. They give you 10 sheets to sign and expect you to know everything. The Doctor will give you contact lens fitting which in my case wasn't good either. And she won't mention anything about cost because apparently, the tens of pages they made you sign had everything written. So watch OUT!!!! There is absolutely no compassion in that place. Even if they make mistakes, they are not ready to pay you back. They don't realize if they upset customers, its word of mouth. 1 sad customer leads to another 20 who will be hesitant to come. Age discrimination is insidious and often not recognized by the victim or the perpetrator. The elderly cannot always advocate for themselves especially in this age of technology. I could not find any reviews on this doctor prior to my encounter. The following is an account of my experience and the conclusions I drew based on my opinions and observations. I write this review of Dr. Annie Chan of Lake Austin Eye and their practice administrator, Mayra Velasquez. The practice is located in Austin, Texas. I will bullet point the ongoing issues I had then end with a disturbing last conversation with the manager. o Unwillingness to accept self-advocacy o Oppressive, belittling and disparaging judgement for defensive reasons o Lack of truthfulness/information on a need to know basis o Refusal to accept the unusual nature of a numerous amount of side-effects I complained of due to my intolerance of steroids, disclosed at the first meeting o Lack of surgical notes, inaccurate notes, writing notes to support themselves CYA o Lack of disclosure on many subjects/inaccurate timelines. o Misdiagnoses or inability to diagnose, or refusal to disclose o Inability to see glaring mistakes, for weeks, in prescriptions causing their technician, the optician and my ophthalmologist to be in awkward situations o Dismissive communication with me and the opticians attempting to remedy o Writing the third prescription without me present to confirm conclusion o Charging office visit before glass prescription properly fitted o Blaming my lack of experience with progressives for their mistakes. I have worn progressives for 25 years. o Suggesting I wait months to get used to a prescription that had my reading power at +6 o Unwillingness to accept their technicians account that the math on the prescription was wrong, dismissing her and me. o Response to all vision concerns later explained by my ophthalmologist, "Your retinas are fine" After months without glasses, three prescriptions with glaring mistakes (as identified by opticians and my ophthalmologist's office), and a misdiagnoses or missed diagnoses, and after conferring with my ophthalmologist of 27 years, I called Dr. Chan's office. Mayra Velasquez interrupted my attempts to explain what the second opinion doctor had discovered by saying, "I love my mother very much. I am going to say to you exactly what I would say to my own mother. You cannot doctor hop from one doctor to another until you find the outcome you are looking for. We made a prescription for you that all of us agreed would work, you need to give it time." I told her returning to my optometrist of 27 years for a second opinion was not doctor hopping. When I explained that their doctor notes were inaccurate to my concerns, my attempts to explain what was wrong with my vision had been ignored multiple times, and the second opinion doctor had discovered I now have secondary cataracts in both eyes that are causing the issues I was describing all along, she scoffed dismissively. Ms. Velasquez told me that the doctor could only go on what I had said and that I had used the word floaters. To which I responded, she is the doctor that does secondary cataracts surgeries and should have been able to diagnose the problem. To which she replied, "I'm sure Dr. Chan knew you had secondary cataracts but did not broach the subject because it was not time to address the issue." I asked her if the practice was in the habit of cherry-picking patient information on a need to know basis. At the end of this ridiculous, callous, dismissive, patronizing conversation, Ms. Velasquez said, we always tell our patients to seek out their ophthalmologists for more accurate prescriptions. I am certain that neither doctor in the practice knew what their office manager said in this conversation. I contribute all the problems I had with the practice to three things, lack of communication unless one is very insistent, dismissive nature toward the aging, and an inability to consider their own fallibility/unwillingness to own their mistakes. I am quite sure they like the thrilling surgery aspect of the job and find the aftercare drudgery. In most situations with a few exceptions, if my concerns did not shine a positive light on them or took too much time, I was made to feel inadequate and bothersome. At no time did I feel like I was being heard because every concern I had was followed by a self-protective accusation, a rebuttal, or an excuse. I was inaccurately told numerous times that I was seeing 20/15 and could not possibly expect more. My near vision was never fully addressed. Age discrimination is an insidious, oppressive, cruel way to run a practice. I feel sorry for those who cannot advocate for themselves and wonder how many of their patients settle for less. It is not enough to have knowledge and the ability to do the surgery. When patients have concerns, a practice and a doctor should listen, consider the possibility of mistakes, and be honest. read more

From the initial consultation though the last follow-up, the entire process was well organized, executed and performed with style. Not to mention, that I can now see great! I have had major eye problems my entire life....born a premature baby...I have been to several doctors who just managed the best they could....I was sent to Dr. Cottle by a S&W surgeon...I was told she was the best in this area. S&W could not help me with my eyes any more. I cannot express how thankful that I met Dr. Cottle and her staff. I had a very serious eye injury about 18 months ago in which I punctured my right eye. I had emergency surgery that day to repair the injury and save my eye. The surgery was successful and I my vision remained 20-20. After a period of 10 months I noticed leakage around the eye injury and according to my optometrist my eye pressure was very very low in the injured eye. My optometrist in Waco referred me to Dr. Cottle. After an examination Dr. Cottle determined that the leakage was indeed intraocular fluid and we scheduled a corneal transplant. Dr. Cottle did an outstanding job and not only have perfect vision but no longer have to be concerned with losing the eye due to the injury. Not only is Dr. Cottle an outstanding surgeon but I find her and her entire staff to be excellent. Appointments are kept on schedule and the entire attitude of the office is upbeat and positive. I just completed 2 surgeries for cataract removal with multi focal lens replacement. I am tickled pink because I can now see 20/20 for distance and near vision. Over time one doesn't notice how much color and sharpness one looses looking through "the same window/eye" each day; it is a gradual decrease in color so you just don't know how much until you have surgery. My experience was great, surgery was a snap (15-20 minutes) with NO pain, and staff at Medical Park Tower Surgery Center were fabulous. Dr. Cottle is an exceptionally experienced and skilled doctor. In dealing with the cornea area, having a "cornea specialist" like Dr. Cottle is what you want. Please note that Medicare will pay for cataract surgery BUT ONLY if a regular non-corrective lens is used for replacement. I didn't want to wear glasses/contacts the rest of my life or pay big bucks every 1-2 years for new lenses which are the expensive part of new glasses. If I am correct, it is my understanding that when you have the regular cataract lens surgery WITHOUT any corrective lens replacement, you will NOT be able to later have corrective vision surgery lenses put in (multi focal, etc. lenses). That was a very important point which made me reconsider what type of lens would be used. Cost of multi focal lenses is not cheap but for me, not wearing glasses the rest of my life plus paying for expensive new glasses every few years was more important than the cost. My costs for the 2 multi focal lenses was approximately $5,000 which includes office visits, surgery, medicines. Had to pay the Medical Park Tower $700 because of the corrective lens replacement surgery which is considered "cosmetic." Medicare did pay for part of the facility costs. The only issue I had was the cost of the 3 prescription eye drops you use for a month per eye. Total was over $400 with a possible renewal of two prescriptions. That should be shared with the client. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Cottle to anyone. I think costs for all health care medical procedures are "out of sight" but when dealing with your eyes, you want the best and Dr. Cottle, in my opinion, is the best. read more

Horrible experience at Lake Austin Eye! Made an apt with no problem. Exam was just ok. Dr Cottle didn't seem to spend much time with me... Most of the work was done by her helper. After the appointment the problems began. Right away, they were asking me for more money, which i knew was wrong because I've had the same insurance for 12 years. Figured it out that day. Then i get a bill, with the charges billed to my insurance wrong. Myra, the office person, assured me she will take care of it and give her two weeks. I was patient and gave her two months since it was during holiday season, etc Had to call back myself, one issue was taken care of, but a new issue created. At this point, three months later, i'm giving up on it.. Now I'm desperate, i need to order contacts. I place the order wit Myra. She said, that because I"m placing a big order, it should be here within 2 days, but because a weekend was coming up, give her until the next week. I called twice since that time frame. No phone calls back. Finally today, they called me back saying my contacts were on backorder. I wear Acuvue! How can they be on backorder?!!?!?!? The receptionist, told me that Myra told her, to fax me a prescription so i can go somewhere else. Basically, i got kicked out. I've lived in four states prior to Texas and this has never happened to me before! Now, with my last pair of contacts lenses in my eyes, i have to go and find a new place to order them from. What a way to treat you customers! read more

Dr. Cottle is NEVER on time. On several occasions I have waited an hour or more either in the waiting room or in the room in the back. She is consistently running behind schedule. That is even with the first appointment of the day or the first appointment after lunch. Dr. Cottle even told me herself that she always runs 1 - 1.5 hours behind schedule. Really - maybe she should look at her clinic flow and readjust her appointment times. It is so disrespectful that I leave work to be there for my scheduled appointment time, and then have to wait. Why is my time less important than yours? We are required to re-schedule if we are more than 15 minutes late and still pay our co-pay so why should we pay your office our co-pay if you are late? Then Dr. Cottle will spend very little time in the room with you and will not give you her full attention, failing to explain what is fully going on, fails to give you options, fails to give you the outcome of your condition, fails to test for other possibilities. Why do I have to suggest things that we could try, and then you just agree - how do I know if that is the best route to go. Joy front desk receptionist has no clue what is going on. She fails to give you important follow up paperwork or fails to explain things clearly to you. Maya, talks the big talk but gives you false information claiming "for legal reasons" which is so false in my case. I've contacted other healthcare providers and even seeked legal advice and the information Maya told me is inaccurate and false. I have tried on several occasions to give this place the benefit of the doubt thinking they may be having a rough day, but this is not the case with this facility. I will definitely be seeking another provider and hope Dr. Cottle and her staff can pull it together and offer better experiences. I hope others that have experienced any of the same issues, as the negative experiences posted, seek care elsewhere. read more

This was my first and only visit at Lake Austin Eye. While Dr. Cottle seems competent, my exam took almost 2 hours. I went for a simple eye exam. After having to sit around waiting I was then told it would be $150 for the contact fitting. I have never been charged this much by any doctor since I have been wearing contacts for 18years. On their new patient paperwork, it lists the price as $150 for "new contact lens patient." I took this to mean patients who are new to contacts not new patients who wear contacts. Then they tell me they don't have any contact samples for my prescription strength and that most doctors do not have samples. Every other doctor I've seen has had a bountiful supply of contacts for me. If you have no life and don't mind waiting around this is the place for you! read more

I've had a terrific experience with Dr. Cottle and her team. Upon entering the office you will be greeted, taken to an exam room and attended to in a timely and professional manner. Dr. Cottle has performed surgery on each of my eyes for a genetic condition and I wouldn't go anywhere else. My husband went to Dr. Cottle for an exam. Dr. Cottle said he needed cataract surgery on both eyes but could be done one at a time. That's what my husband wanted to do. He went in for a post operative appointment and was charged $160 co-pay for the surgery plus the regular co-pay for an office visit. I didn't think that was right, but wasn't sure, so I paid the additional $160. I checked his policy and he was only responsible for his office visit co-pay and payment to the surgical center the day of the surgery. They would not reimburse the $160 until after the claim was settled. As of 9 months later, they have not filed the claim. A claims person from the insurance company had a 3 way call with Maya in Dr. Cottle's office and she said she would send me a check by the end of the week. I still have not received a check and it is 3 weeks since the call. I called the office last week and was told they would check with Maya about it. Still nothing. And my husband has seen another Ophthalmologist who says he has only a small cataract in the other eye and does not need surgery for a long time. Interestingly, they have seen him 3 times in Dr. Cottle's office, but filed a claim for the first office visit only, not the other two. read more

Horrible experience to say the least at Lake Austin Eye. Doctor was ok but experience with their billing department was worst ever. I provided insurance information but they didn't know how to file claim with insurance. After that instead to getting in touch with me they sent my data to collection. Come on,,,I have dealt with my many many medical providers over the years and never had such a bad experience. I dealt with rep:Mayra and her billing manager, worst kind to say the least. I went ahead and made the payment. My insurance company says that they never sent the claim and the total bill was way higher than what it should have been (as negotiated by insurance). Nasty lady, that manager in her billing department. I paid and said goodbye. I would never ever step into this business. read more

While Dr. Cottle is extremely knowledgable and a specialist in her field, her bedside manner leaves me wondering after every exam why I stick with her (it's truly because of her expertise only). I schedule my exams 6 months to a year out, and I still am left waiting in an exam room for an hour & 15 minutes every time to the point where I have to remind someone that I'm still there before I see her. This is the longest any doctor that I see ever makes me wait, including award-winning surgeons. I don't see the point in scheduling so many months out if I'm not going to be accommodated into the schedule correctly. I should be called day-of the exam if she's running over an hour late or her schedule should allow for ample time and not be overbooked. I understand she is busy, but I have to take an entire half day off of work every time to see her to drive out from Downtown to Bee Cave and sit in a waiting room for over an hour just have her see me for 5 minutes and tell me everything looks good. read more

I was referred by my optometrist to Dr. Cottle for cataract surgery. I was quite concerned because I have a genetic condition called Nystagmus that makes my eyes wiggle uncontrollably. This affects my vision and might make eye surgery a problem. Dr. Cottle indicated that she had dealt with this condition before. I am VERY near-sighted and have very significant astigmatism. She explained all the choices I could make. Near vs far correction, correcting astigmatism (which costs more), laser vs knife surgery (laser costs more). They explained the costs and the implications of my decisions clearly. I selected laser surgery, torric lens with UV filtration to correct astigmatism. The doctor had a very reassuring, professional and competent manner, and the surgery went very well. NO pain, discomfort or itching etc. afterwards. My vision is now better than it has ever been in my entire life. I was truly amazed and very grateful. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Cottle and Lake Austin Eye. read more

Dr Cottle has been my eye doctor and surgeon for all of my eye care during the past three years. I had cateracts, which othere doctors could not find), Dr Cottle found and removed them. I went from having terrible vision (right eye 20/800 and left eye 20/1000) to seeing 20/20 with glasses today. Dr Cottle is excellent with her patients and really knows her profession. The office is beautiful and her staff is excellent. They call to remind you of your appointment and get you in and out quickly. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Dr Cottle for any of your eye needs. read more
