I had problems leaving my glowing review on a different website, so I'll try to leave it here…read moreinstead: My first experience at Austin Eye Center was 100 out of 100. Sabrina (the assistant at the front desk) could not have been nicer, so my initial impression was excellent right as I walked inside the practice. She was warm, funny, accommodating, understanding, and professional. And as others have said, the office is immaculate. It's extremely calming and classy. Dr. Makkouk was as amazing as his many, many 5-stars indicate. I have an extremely complex retina and/or neurological issue that several other doctors have, frankly, "passed the buck" on. I just really wanted to be able to tell my story, including the myriad variables that are potentially at play, and have a doctor try to brainstorm with me. Dr. Makkouk was SO patient and did just that - ranked the possibilities in order of likelihood according to his professional opinion. This meant the world to me, and I really could understand his solid thought processes because he explained things so well. He also offered to closely work with my other doctors and confirmed what he thought were the best next steps. For all of his extremely impressive credentials and education, he could have been arrogant and/or dismissive, but he was the opposite. He genuinely wanted to help. I could go on and on about all the positives of his listening skills, demeanor, professionalism, etc. The gentleman who was with Dr. Makkouk before me came out with the doctor and said something to the effect of, "You are a fine young man." I concur, sir!

He was easily bothered by questions and it almost felt like we were dealing with an Ai robot. He was very cold almost to the point of being rude. My wife received an injection in her eye. He didn't prepare her what to expect when receiving the injection. That's why when he injected directly into her eye she jerked. He not only got upset with her for jerking, he asked the most ridiculous question. He asked "What's wrong " she explained that he hurt her. My wife said afterward that if he had prepared her for what to expect then she wouldn't have jerked the way she did. You can have all the education in the world but it still can't teach you to be compassionate. Compassion really comes from the heart. You can also tell by the way he speaks to his nurses. Hopefully he realizes soon that being a doctor doesn't make you better than everyone else it just provides you the opportunity to make people's lives better

James W. Dooner, MD - Dr. Dooner having fun with his team on Patient Appreciation Day!

There are those who talk about thinking outside the box and those who simply do - in thought and…read moreaction. Dr. Dooner is among the latter; an exceptionally skilled and forward thinking surgeon. He's gone where other doctors refused to go, and given me sight that I never imagined possible. --------------- I have had eye problems since birth. Congenital cataracts weren't readily treated in infants in 1974. I also have microcornea which creates added challenges. But my parents stubbornly sought out a surgeon who was willing to do what he could. And while the outcome after six operations with complications was far better than expected, time took its toll and the relatively normal life I have led had become an exhausting charade that I could no longer maintain. After the original operations, I wore high powered hard contact lenses over frozen off-centered pupils. Light was too bright, dark was too dark, and if I didn't squint enough my lenses would drift and cause one object to look like six. Along the way, I had posterior vitreous detachments in both eyes which caused cobwebs and smears to obstruct my vision. I also developed glaucoma. Over the years, I saw many ophthalmologists. From Atlanta, to New York City to Baltimore, there was no shortage of reputable doctors. I would comment on symptoms that were troublesome, but I was never offered any potential solutions. Mostly I was told I had a difficult case, and to take the glaucoma drops and come back for pressure checks. More than one said something along the lines of "What do you want from me? You just need a glaucoma specialist" One said "I don't know why you can even see." Not hopeful to say the least. Flash forward - I moved to Austin in 2019 and eventually found a great glaucoma specialist. When I asked him if there were any options for my other conditions, I expected to hear "No" yet again. Instead he confidently referred me to Dr Dooner. Less than two weeks after my initial visit with him, Dr Dooner operated on my left eye. I had a vitrectomy, a lens implant and my pupil enlarged and centered. Six weeks later I had the same done on my right eye. These surgeries have been nothing short of life changing. Not only have all the symptoms I was struggling with been cured, but the sight I have now is better than ever. Also, I have hope now. For a while, I felt that medicine would leave me behind. Now, because of Dr Dooner, I feel like I can embrace possibility again. Oh and he's also a really nice down to earth guy and a caring doctor. Couldn't ask for more.

I first came here on August 12 after being referred to them by Dr. Christina Bui of Eye Associates…read moreof South Texas in New Braunfels. There is a review posted for them as well. Dr. Bui said that if I could make it to the E Sonterra location, they would see me. My brother-in-law drove me from New Braunfels to San Antonio, and when we arrived we were told that I could not be seen because the doctor had to catch flight. They told me I should come back the next day at a different location which was farther away (Huebner). So we came back the next day and I saw Dr. Mein. After waiting for at least 20 minutes, I was finally called back and I talked with a tech about my retinal detachment. And then they took me to a different room and said the doctor would be with me shortly. I finally was called by another tech maybe 30 minutes later, and then they said the doctor would be with me shortly. Forty-five minutes later, after sitting alone in a room by myself, the doctor came in and stood over me--literally hovered over me and asked me what the problem was. It was a little intimidating, but he probably figured it was easier to talk to me than try to look at my chart and figure out what the issue was. He did some more exams, and then sent me for some imaging. We discussed the retinal detachment and he said I would need surgery to repair it. I asked him if I could get in that day which was a Friday, and he said no, because the issue was they were having trouble finding anesthesiologists. Evidently this is a problem, because a lot of companies that employ anesthesiologists want them to work in hospitals and not in surgery centers. So I had already been experiencing this retinal detachment for two weeks due to a misdiagnosis at the other office in New Braunfels, so having to wait over a weekend was a little frightening. I kept wondering if it would detach completely and if I would go blind. They scheduled an appointment for me for surgery for Monday, and I saw Dr. Holy. I will post a separate review for Dr. Holy and the surgical center. All in all, I was grateful for the service that I received from this office. Their office manager did apologize to me for the miscommunication from the day before.

Everything went well. They seemed to be very knowledgeable bin what they do. I was really pleasedread more
