I can't share a lot of detail about our situation, but we needed to see a retina specialist after a bad cataract surgery incident. Austin Retina had nothing to do with the issue; they just were there to help us when a cataract surgery didn't go as expected.... Austin Retina, their entire staff have been 10/10. We chose to see Robert Wong. Dr. Robert Wong; he is a fantastic man. He is an honest man. He is the most incredible doctor that understands the back of the eye. He can be trusted to be honest, careful, and very protective of his patient. He is a true physician who understands the creed: "first, do no harm." Our experience so far has taken near two months.. and maybe two more months to go.... But with eye issues, patience is the key. My father has already gained back partial vision of his right eye and Dr, Robert Wong hasn't even operated yet. He has successfully guided and walked my father and our family thru a very traumatic experience. My dad now has his vision nearly restored... and this doctor has executed his job with a level of respect, professionalism and clinical skill that is so outstanding that I am now out of words. read more

Repeated issues. I took this up with my physician and comments were made that he was told I was the only one that ever complained. As I read here, I see there's proof that is untrue. I knew that of course, because they are too large of an organization not to have issues Whether valid or not. But it's this kind of defensive behavior that is a problem. I have seen Dr Patel twice at this office due to some flashing symptoms I was having in one eye. It was a somewhat urgent referral from my optometrist, and I didn't get to do my usual obsessive research. From the person working at the front desk, to the individuals who do testing on you/dilate your eyes prior to seeing the doctor, to Dr Patel himself, everyone was so warm and kind. Dr Patel himself has lovely bedside manner, is very thorough and reassuring. He takes his time and makes sure to answer your questions (and I tend to have a lot). It's rare to have such a positive experience with a medical office, especially when dealing with something as scary as potential retinal tear/detachment. I will continue to go here and would recommend it completely. read more

I was told I had a tear in my retina and ARA worked me in for an appointment the following day. Throughout the duration of my appointment I encountered various staff members (front desk, technicians, etc.). They were all incredibly kind, thorough, and professional. I spent an hour undergoing various tests and photos and the staff maneuvered me through the process in a very efficient manner. I met Dr. Rosignoli for the first time and felt an immediate sense of comfort. He did an excellent job of explaining the issue to me and reassuring me of my concerns while answering all of my questions. His bedside manner was exceptional and he was very delightful and lighthearted. He definitely made the appointment less stressful and I would recommend him and ARA to anyone in need of a retina specialist. read more

While the wait is long which is nothing new for any doctor office in Austin, I was able to get my laser procedure done for my retinal hole on that same appointment with Dr.Dooner. They did a thorough exam on the first hour and staff is very friendly so it made the wait bearable. I wouldn't hesitate to come back in the future. read more

The amount of time that you have to spend at their office is extremely excess. It typically takes 2+ hours before you can see the doctor. They need to improve this wait time and schedule better. read more

While the doctors may be highly skilled surgeons, their communication and patient interaction need significant improvement. The office is always overcrowded, and patients are shuffled from one waiting room to another. By the time you finally see the doctor, you've already spent at least an hour undergoing scans and waiting--sometimes even longer. When you do get face-to-face time with the doctor, it's rushed, often lasting no more than five minutes, which is not nearly enough time to process important information about your vision and treatment options. I underwent two retinal surgeries, which ultimately led to a cataract. At no point did either doctor take the time to discuss potential outcomes with me. I had no idea that my first surgery would lead to a cataract, requiring yet another procedure. Nor was I informed that the laser treatment could paralyze my pupil. Additionally, I wasn't told that the silicone oil left in my eye after the first surgery would result in persistent floaters once it was removed. During my most recent checkup, the doctor acknowledged that he could see the floaters in my eye and casually suggested another surgery to remove them. While I understand that all surgeries carry risks and potential complications, I was never given a thorough explanation of what to expect throughout this entire process. The only "risk discussion" I received was a routine legal disclaimer before each procedure. This office is extremely busy, and I recognize that the doctors see many patients daily. However, there is no personal connection, no meaningful conversation--just a conveyor belt of patients being processed as quickly as possible. As a result, I now have mediocre (at best) vision and lingering uncertainty about my next steps. I don't even know if I should go through with another procedure to remove the floaters because I have no confidence in what the outcome might be. One of my biggest concerns is my difficulty adjusting to light, which has never been properly addressed. I feel more like a number than a patient, and that's incredibly frustrating. read more

Was referred by my primary care physician. Beware of this group - was hounded by them for insurance information. At least ask me how I'm doing or what I'm being referred for, they insisted on collecting my insurance information. When I said I'd bring it with me due to my work schedule, they got snippy. Being treated like a checkbook vs patient was a terrible way to onboard a new patient. Going elsewhere. read more

The good thing is when you finally catch up with your doctor. I think Dr. Levitan is great. The young and energetic staff are super positive and friendly. The bad thing is the intolerable delay in their advertised appointment time. I've booked early afternoon, and don't even see the Dr. until 90 minutes or 2 hours later. It's called a cattle call for good reason. This isn't a one time experience. It's the standard norm. read more

BAIT AND SWITCH. ! BEWARE ! They tell you the exam is 200.. Then you walk outside to pay and they ask for hundreds more.. Without any authorizations for additional services. At no time during my exam did anyone state "this next procedure is elective and not part of the exam, do you wish to continue?" The billing department manager stated "it's your responsibility DURING the exams to ask what this and that costs..." so while I'm flash blind and dilated I'm supposed to act like a parrot "what does this cost?".. GTFO of here.. I did not consent to additional exams yet they are forcing me to pay them. While I was trying to resolve the issue with the billing department, they threatened me with calling the police to remove me from the lobby. So there you go. You get procedures without consent, if you complain they threaten you with billing (collections) , and arrest. And for all this trouble, their "specialist" could not diagnose my vision issue that I'm still suffering from. read more

I do not recommend Austin retina associates. Since having a vitrectomy by dr Wong my vision in that eye has been .....much less than great. Having seen other eye specialists (at the eye institute in WV) I have been told it's due to wrinkling CAUSED BY DR WONG thinking he is clever by doing extra lasering to prevent retinal detachment. This excessive lasering and OVER TREATMENT has caused vision problems in my eye. Which of course can only be corrected by more surgery which they do not advise. Guess what? The eye surgery has damaged my eye to the point that my pupil now dilated with light vs constricting. If you care about your vision do NOT seek care here!!!!! If I was still in Texas I would look into legal action against this reckless provider!!!! read more

Be warned, this place is trying to get as much money out of you as they can, and their front desk is apparently not trained properly. This place was recommended by my eye doctor when I had a tear in my retina. I was seen for an appointment where they fixed the tear on site. Was a little jarring to have no warning and then a laser shot in my eye, but all in all not bad. Dr. Harper was fine. The frustration came later with the follow up appointment. I was told upon arrival that I would not be charged since it was a post-op visit. 2 weeks later I got a bill for the visit. Austin Retina told me to contact my insurance who said they charged for a regular office visit. The billing department told me they didnt, but charged for photos they took "which is routine". If it's routine, why was I told I wouldn't owe anything upon arrival and departure of my visit? It seems they want to charge my insurance for anything they can, and in the end, I end having to pay. I recommend going somewhere else that is more open about what they are doing. Also having to wait an hour for a follow up visit seems excessive. read more

My wife had all the symptoms of a detached retina, which is a very serious eye problem which requires immediate surgery. ...and of course symptoms came on late on Saturday, with all the ophthamologist offices closed. Austin Retina came through for us on short notice - able to see Dr. Ted Wood on the Sunday afternoon. Fortunately it was a much less serious vitreous detachment of the eye - not an emergency. But the amount of stress this saved us being seen on a Sunday is immeasurable. Thank you! read more

Dr. Nixon is outstanding, however in mid December I had an injection for my condition which was to be covered by my insurance, two weeks after the injection I received a bill for $1,905, I called the billing dept and was told this would be taken care of and I didn't have to worry about it. about January 24th I received another bill for the same amount, I called billing again and the woman asked me to hang on while she checked with her manager, when she returned I was informed that the program I was told about backed out of paying the $1,905. I again told her there was no mention prior to the injection that there would be a cost to me, this was a total surprise, even Dr. Nixon was surprised to hear I was billed the amount. If I had been made aware of this cost prior to the procedure I would have chosen another route. read more

I plan to no longer be using Austin Retina for my care and it has nothing to do with the care I received but the billing department. The previous year, I had been self-pay. Prior to July of 2022, my bill was a total of $158.35 the following: $116.02 (Billing code 97028 - description: Intravitreal injection) I was told by Dr. Harper this injection would not cost me as it was a sample. But I am billed $116.02 which I still paid. $42.33 (Billing code 67028 - description: CPTR Opnth DX IMG Post Segmnt) In July of 2022, without any changes in my care it increased by $93.00. When I called the billing department, I was told that there was an additional procedure done. I said that nothing changed but asked which\what procedure would this item indicate? The billing person at that time could not tell me and they said a manager would call. No one called. When I went into my next appointment, I spoke to someone on Dr. Haper's staff and they told me they did not know why I was billed for that $93 but that she would make sure someone would call me. No one called again. In good faith, I paid the balance which was a total of now, $241.52 ($148.52 + $93). However, once the balance posted on my credit card, I disputed the $93 charge with the thought maybe someone would call or I would get some answers. After two months, the credit card company permanently posted the $93 back to my account indicating the dispute was in my favor. No one from Austin Retina called. However, that $93 appeared back on my billing statement from Austin Retina. On August 1st, I changed insurance carriers. I did receive a bill from Austin Retina for, now $241.52 which was for two appointments that I had since the previous billing/payment. I asked to have these put through my new insurance. I obviously should had gotten the billing codes for each line item and then called my insurance, something past doctor's offices had done. However, in this case, I should had done it myself to make sure it would be covered. I found from my new billing statement from Austin Retina, that my insurance company did not cover their billing codes. My bill that Austin Retina is now expecting me to pay is $1313, which is the billing rate they charge insurance companies. I called Austin Retina and asked them to rebill me at the self-pay rate again and they said it would be illegal. I called my insurance carrier and spoke to two different people asking them what would be illegal for Austin Retina to rebill at self-pay and neither could tell me. They both said that it should not be a problem. I have contacted Austin Retina's billing department and asked specifically what is illegal, and the person I spoke to could not tell me but that a manager would contact me to explain. That was in September 2022. No call. However, in this call, I did get the billing code for the $93 and it is: 99213. Description for this code is "Office/Outpatient Visit Est". Still don't know why I am being charged this when I was not charged it before that July billing. Since this last $1313 billing I have posted a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in hopes I would understand what is illegal or ask Austin Retina to just tell me it is their internal policy. Just handing out $1313 for procedures, that would had totaled $297.04 ($148.52 per procedure) in self-pay, is difficult. I feel Austin Retina looks as patients, and their insurance, as money trees. What bothers me as well is how Austin Retina responded to my BBB complaint. The responses seemed like attempts to shame me into paying as opposed to telling me why self-pay is illegal. They also mentioned how I asked to skip a procedure, in the BBB complaint response, which bothered me as well because I always understood that that was private (HIPAA compliance). They even asked for my insurance carrier to provide a written statement indicating that they can self-pay and continued the statement that they would consider working with me. Update: Upon going to another Retina doctor, I found that my retina was torn. This doctor had to perform a laser procedure to fix it. This was in the same location as were Dr Harper was injecting my eye with the sample medication. On top of it, the bill from my new Retina doctor, with the out patient surgery to repair my retina, was a half what Austin Retina is trying to charge me. read more

Dr Wong did a detached retina surgery for me 5-7yrs ago, and did a good job. I was in for a routine check up. I arrived 10 minutes early for my appointment. Was checked in and seen promptly by the support staff (read the eye chart, check blood pressure, etc.). However, when that was complete I was told to wait in a waiting room to be "called" to see the Dr. 10-15 other patients in there before me. Dr Wong was the ONLY Dr there. Waiting room emptied, refilled and emptied again, and I went to ask if I had been forgotten? I was assured I was "next"...then 2 more people were called, and I finally (after 2hrs) gave up. They stack people like cord wood, and get to them when they can (I confirmed there was no emergencies) so if you go make sure you have the day off and don't mind spending it in a waiting room. To top it off I was billed, although I never got to see Dr Wong. I realize doctor's time is more valuable than most of our time...but this just felt disrespectful. read more

I've had an appointment for over 3 weeks. Earlier this week I received a call from Jenna to go over everything and made sure they had my insurance, etc...she was friendly and professional. I arrived at my appointment today 15 minutes early and was told they had tried repeatedly to contact me because they forgot to bring the equipment needed for my exam (at Killeen office) so I'd need to reschedule. I showed them on my phone that no one had contacted me...she kept insisting they had used the number I'd provided and it must be wrong(even though it worked fine earlier for Jenna!)...in other words they flat out lied and were rude. I rescheduled and left. I later called and canceled as this is definitely not a business that has any integrity, compassion, or organization and why would I want to entrust my sight to them. read more

Great staff and wonderful doctors. I saw Dr. Young. I highly recommend. Why the 3 star rating? It is the pandemic and this office has close to 0 social distancing. I've been here twice in the past 2 months. It is crowded with people, mostly elderly, which I feel exposes them to a great risk. I have a familial history of retinal issues and when sparks started flying (actually bring neon green crescent shaped flashes) in my peripheral vision I was pretty sure something was happening to my Retina! As much as I appreciated the view of an aurora borealis without the plane ticket it was pretty nerve racking. Due to HMO nonsense,I was forced to sit at a pcp, then go to an opthomologist, then finally to Austin Retina. Once I finally navigated those waters and get in to Austin Retina I was subjected to several tests where my suspicions were confirmed and I officially learned I had some lattice degeneration, and a small Retinal tear. Dr. Young took me to the "laser room". Seriously, the laser room. Lol. There was no giant cat shooting lasers and the room was lackluster for having such an epic name. The staff was pleasant across the board from front desk to the retinal specialist Dr. Young. Pro tip: We've all only got 2 eyes. I am a cardiologist and I've seen Austin Retina for sometime. I was fairly stable in transferring my care to Lakeline vision. I went in for a routine exam and surprisingly there was a small retinal tear not seen before and it was obviously new based on the high-quality pictures they had from the prior studies. I was seem very quickly by Austin Retina in the North office. Dr. Jhaveri Was outstanding. He did a full exam and found another tear that was not seem -he literally had me almost the stand on my head but he did a very thorough exam. It's a good thing he did because he found a tear that was subacute and had fluid. He explained it me completely and actually did it in a way that a layman could understand even though I was a physician. I do appreciate when that happens. I have found when they deviate from protocol I get worse care. He then went ahead and proceeded to do a very thorough job of lasering all of the tears. A shout out to staff all of whom are experts, thorough, competent, and explained every bit of the procedure to me throughout the entire process. I always look to see how a patient who had no medical understanding would feel and they did an outstanding job We are very fortunate to have this high-quality practice in our town. I was referred to ARA by Mann Eye Institute, to whom I'd gone seeking cataract surgery. The folks at Mann Eye Institute suspected a problem, and wanted ARA to take a look. My comments: 1. The care was First Class. I have a retina issue, and it is being treated competently. 2. The staff is well-trained, courteous, polite and caring. The office is pleasant, and I never felt that they were in a hurry to get to the next patient. 3. I was so impressed, I related to Dr. Doomer my observations. "An office that is so professional and efficient, and yet, so warm and caring is rare," I told him. And I meant it. 4. The peace of mind that I feel about ARA is priceless. read more

What ever you do hope you don't get a girl named Meghan she works in the photography/fluorescein angiography room and she could not even do the fluorescein angiography injection right... she is rude and godawful at her job. Arrived at 2:15 for a 2:30 appointment.... we saw the doctor 2 hours after we got there. TWO HOURS OF WAITING. We were taken back to several different rooms and repeatedly brought back to a dark waiting room. I see in previous reviews that this is their thing.... why is this their thing? Why can't they figure out how to see patients like all other doctors? I've been in and out of emergency rooms faster than this place. 0/10 would not recommend because they're inefficient and completely disrespectful of the patients time. read more

My grand-daughter came home from college with concerns for her eyes. With the help of our ophthalmologist at Eye Physicians of Austin, we were able to get an appointment within 24 hours. Dr Philip Storey was very professional and personable. He listened attentively to her concerns and was very patient and reassuring - and eased her anxiety. We would both recommend him highly. Everyone in that office was kind, patient and explained everything they were doing thoroughly. They took our temp at the door and only allowed a second person in w/ the patient if it was necessary. The precautions they took for COVID - general cleanliness and spacing of patients was appropriate. Thank you, Dr Storey for making a scary situation - such a pleasant experience. read more

My first experience was better than my next pre-Covid follow up. I was seated across the room where they check your eyes on the machine that you put your forehead against and put your chin in the cup. The door was open and they wanted it to stay open.I counted six or seven people come in one after the other to get checked and the tech never wiped the machine between people. Not once. Some of the patients really didn't look so well. I went in to my nurse, I told her that nobody cleaned the machine between patients and I showed her my photos. She said it was a new person and she would have a talk with them. I told somebody else there but nobody seem very concerned. I'm concerned about going back there. I did like my doctor very much. Maybe he has another office location that is cleaner. read more

The dye injection was the most painful that I recall. Otherwise, it was a helpful visit. As with most visits to a retina specialist, you can expect to be seen by a variety of different representatives, each performing different tests and procedures. Be prepared to spend some time; this is never a quick appointment. With that said, Austin Retina Associates was a quick and thorough exam. Dr. Wong took his time explaining his opinions and the results of the tests. Overall, I would recommend Austin Retina Associates to anyone seeking an excellent eye exam. read more

wish I could score zero stars . . . my grandson was a NICU preemie. C.Armitage Harper, III evidently was called in (without parent's knowledge) to evaluate for a possible retina issue common in preemies. He saw the baby several times - never once explaining his presence to the parents or discussing his findings. parents were then told they could not take the baby home until they stood there at the nurse's station and scheduled a followup in 1 week with this person. parents were also told in the NICU discharge class that Dr Harper would send CPS to their house if they didn't bring the baby in for follow up. don't know if this is a hospital policy or his. this practice DOES NOT cater to babies or small children. we were treated like scum, hidden in a dark back hallway and told the baby was not permitted to eat while there and not for any medical reasons. and sadly it gets worse from here. we found a true pediatric retina doc who was willing to assume care and the difference between the two practices was like night and day. this group may be perfectly fine for adults, but do not let yourselves be bullied into thinking you must take your preemie newborn there. read more

While the physician whom I see is excellent, the woman who administered the dye for the fluorescein angiogram on the afternoon of 1/19/2022 needs to be re-trained or re-assigned. Her technique is poor. Jacking up the tourniquet to near maximum pressure was my first clue that all was not going well - that always results in unnecessary pain & subsequent super-large bruising. The pain after withdrawing the needle was strong, which she said must be "burning". I said that she had done something wrong, which she did not appreciate hearing. Today, I still have an orange/blue bruise the size of a baseball on my forearm centered around the needle-stick - a direct result of the too-tight tourniquet and/or an incorrect needle-stick. If she is still doing that duty the next time I am scheduled for that test, I will decline the test & explain it to the doctor. Move or re-train her!! read more
