My parents and I dined in at Local on North on Sunday after reading positive reviews on Yelp. I ordered the Grilled Salmon, which was cooked to perfection! The combination of the citrus vinaigrette with the sweet chili paired perfectly with the salmon. If you don't like sweetness to your meal, ask for these on the side as it might be a little too sweet for some people. The plate came with Horseradish Mashed Potatoes, which were not completely over the top but provided a nice balance to the plate. For desert, we ordered the bread pudding of the day and IT WAS AMAZING! Honestly the highlight of our visit, as it was perfectly moist and the best we've ever tried. I would return to try the pizza or burgers, which looked delicious when we saw them come out from the kitchen! Aside from the food, it is overall a nice, small place with little outdoor seating. You can make a reservation on OpenTable like we did, but there was little people when we visited on Sunday around lunch time so it was not needed. read more

This was such an unexpected find, in the heart of Duluth! If you're tired of the same ole fare at the chains and local places, give Local in North a try! I was able to make a Resv on Open Table and was seated right on time. I was asked which table i would prefer (party of 2) and thought the waiter was particularly attentive to making sure we enjoyed our meal. The drinks were great, we had local beers, but wish I had tried the Peach Old Fashion because it sounded delicious! The menu is full of creative combinations, it was so hard to choose! We ordered the goat cheese croquet for an appetizer and it was the perfect amount to share without spoiling our dinner. I had the field green salad with herb chicken and it was delicious too! The lemon vinaigrette was not over powering and the perfect complement to the tangy cheese, candied pecans and fresh greens. We had the fried flour-less chocolate cake for dessert and I thought I had died and gone to heaven...it was that good! The cake is rolled in graham cracker crumbs before frying so it's not gluten free, If that's important to you. For me, it was the stuff dreams are made of! Crazy good and the perfect end to the meal! I am so surprised by the great reviews.....meh....that's what I thought. Went there based on Yelp reviews and was expecting something really special. Not so much....there were 4 of us and quite frankly none of us are dying to get back there. The vibe is very nice and on a Tuesday night at 6:30pm it was not crowded at all (which was a good thing). The food was just so incredibly average, there are so many other choices of dining establishments and for the price ($100 per couple w/2 drinks a piece) we all whould have rather been at Marlows. I came alone on a Saturday evening about an hour before closing looking for a salad and some protein. Downtown Duluth was packed so I grabbed a seat at the bar. I quickly focused in on the "sweet thang "salad because I liked the combination of pears, red onions, lettuce, bleu cheese and nuts. To me it made sense to pair that with steak of all of the offered five other proteins as well which was a great selection to choose from. One of the staff then proactively added chimichurri sauce as a side with the steak. This was an outstanding choice and I think should be standard for the salad when steak is ordered. This is now one of my favorite salads in the Atlanta area. My only other comment would be to increase the amount of blue cheese and nuts that come with the salad As well. I ordered a Malbec with the meal as I prefer full bodied wines and was pleasantly surprised by the smooth, full-bodied and complex flavor as Malbecs often have a harsh tho full bodied taste. The bartender than suggested I try the Coppola Claret as well and I loved it even more. What an outstanding wine. Great Meal while watching the GS v HOU game. Lovely staff as well. read more

We were sat in blinding sunlight; three out of four dishes were awful: steak was undercooked, a chicken was a thigh instead of a breast, pasta with clams had no clams...just a clam sauce out of a can. Very small portions; skimpy bread...medium size glass of tap beer for $6.00. Tried to be nouveau with the presentation, but not enough to mask the third rate quality for outrageous prices. We hosted my daughter's rehearsal dinner here in early June and it was an amazing experience. Michael was very easy to work with. We rented the entire restaurant and the space was perfect. We chose to limit the menu to 7 choices and they printed a menu with our choices. The food was wonderful, the service was terrific. Coming in the host was very polite, but honestly that was the only thing good about this place. Sat down with no silverware and or napkins, proceeded to have us wait for about 15-20 mins for a server to even greet us. Ordering food was quick, shrimp tacos were sort of dry and the wings came out WITH NO SAUCE. Waiters and kitchen staff were not happy with each other and everything seemed so unorganized. I had the chicken sandwich for $15, and it came with 2 breasts! I'd rather pay $12 and just have 1 breast, something more right sized. Also a lunch combo option would have been awesome. I have never felt like I had to write a bad review for a restaurant--until now. Yesterday my boyfriend and I had a reservation for Valentine's Day dinner. As expected, it was busy so we didn't mind the slow service. We got our appetizer, and it was great, but our experience went downhill from there as our entrees were never delivered. Over an hour passed and we saw tables around us getting their food even though they all got seated after us. The server did apologize for the wait and assured us our meal would be comped, so we understood and continued to wait patiently. The manager (who never once checked in on how things were going) and kitchen seemed very slow to move and were chatting amongst each other. There was no sense of urgency to bring out our food. It was nearing 10pm and we saw the staff cleaning up tables and getting ready to close for the night. And it wasn't until we realized the kitchen was nearly empty that we decided to stop by our server and let her know we were leaving. Her response? Just "ok." We spent our entire Valentine's Day date night at the restaurant just to snack on an appetizer. I'm sure the food would have been delicious, but was it ever going to arrive? Doubtful. Visited this place on a Saturday night. No reservation, so we sat outside. That was a good thing. This is a very crowded restaurant, and the hard tile wall surfaces bounce sound around terribly. It was too noisy to hear ourselves think inside. Outside was also very crowded, but otherwise a nice environment. It did seem like every fly in Duluth decided to check out the Local On North patio. They seemed to like it. We had some beer, and it was very good. This place caters to the crowd that love bitter beer, so most selections were some sort of over-hopped IPA. But that's a personal thing for me. I realize that the reason that so many beers nowadays are over-hopped IPAs is because most people either like them, or insist on demonstrating that they're trendy. For our appetizer, we shared some really excellent "Bang Bang Shrimp". That was an unfortunate name for an excellent dish. The little popcorn shrimp were nicely breaded and fried. The Chili Sauce and Lemon Aioli dip was very well balanced. The mix of sweet, hot, and tart was a great compliment to the shrimp. My wife had linguini with clam sauce. The restaurant brags about using local, Georgia sourced ingredients. They really needed some heavy cream and/or cheese from Wisconsin for this dish. The pasta was perfect, but not perfect enough to make up for the watery "sauce". Both of the pieces of clam on the plate were nice. I had Shrimp Diavlo. The penne was perfect. The sauce was very good. The shrimp were tough and overcooked. They included some very small pieces of well baked crusty bread with a nice olive oil based topping. The taste and texture were excellent. It would have been nice to have had a little more, but our waiter seemed to have better things to do. Maybe it's just as well, since the chairs were very uncomfortable. It was good that we didn't sit and linger at the table. Overall, I tend to judge higher end restaurants with higher expectations than a casual neighborhood bistro. This place combines the atmosphere of a crowded urban diner with the mediocre cuisine of a neighborhood tavern, but with the prices of a three or four star restaurant. read more

Great service, but 2 stars for food that missed the mark. We got coupons in the mail for Local on North and decided to give it a try for a rare child-free date night. The menu is a collection of classic American fare- pretty standard, crowd-pleasing dishes. What came out of the kitchen left me wanting for the "farm" in LON's self-proclaimed "farm to table" menu. We ordered soup to start. The onion soup is a thick cream-based soup, not the French onion classic I was expecting (should have asked the server or read the menu more closely). It was tasty, but much heavier than what I was in the mood for. For entrees, I tried the Lemon Chicken and my husband ordered The Blue burger. The "made in house potato pancake" served with the Lemon Chicken was not the crispy, latke style accompaniment I was hoping for, but a ball of deep-fried mashed potatoes. The "seasonal vegetables" was a single tough stem of broccoli. The dish was overly sauced and heavy, but the chicken was still juicy and well-cooked. The Blue burger had plenty of blue but was sadly lacking anything green- maybe they were out of local greens? The burger was cooked to requested temperature. We were told by our server that the beef was from Buckhead Beef (which is a national distributor of meats). With only one farm named on the menu (Springer Mountain for the lemon chicken) and simply "local greens" included with some menu items, it really does not seem that the label "farm to table" or "local" is appropriate for this restaurant.
