We visited this restaurant today/Sunday late afternoon. It was really fun. The atmosphere is unique as it is in a cellar of a really old building. It's shadowy & mysterious with cool old architecture, spooky taxidermied critters, dried eucalyptus in bundles hanging from the ceiling & twinkling chandeliers & neon decorative lights. The restaurant, bar & bathrooms were all clean. The service was prompt & the server was polite & friendly. I had the spinach side salad with the salmon & my date had the Caesar side salad with the pork chops. All of the food was fresh & excellent. I was so glad we stopped in. It was such an adventure to go to this unique, quite magical hideaway in a world of predictable chain restaurants. I wish there were more places like this. It felt like I was in a storybook world for just a little bit. Downtown Lockhart has all sorts of cute shops & amazing architecture. I can't wait to stop back by again one day & find another magical spot.

We were impressed with absolutely everything. First, even though it was still terribly humid and hot outside when we walked downstairs and entered the restaurant, it was cool and crisp! Such a welcoming thing when you live in the armpit of hell. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. I've said it before but I'll say it again. It's such an easy thing for staff to do that makes the guests feel welcome even if you can't help them right away. Acknowledge they've come in! They did just that and seated us very quickly. We got there just before the rush which is usually how we roll. We ordered so many things. The bang bang calamari, the rotato and the ceviche. The calamari was perfect sizes and the crunch was real. The bang bang sauce did the job as bang bang sauces usually do. This one was tangier than most which I loved. Wasn't leaning on the mayo too heavily. The rotato is the always delicious spiraled and fried potatoes. You can't go wrong there. But the ceviche was the star of the show for me. Mango, cucumber, coconut milk, hamachi - I could eat it every meal and not get tired of it. We got so many starters that I was basically full so we shared the steak and potatoes. I rarely buy steak out because we make really good ones at home but I really enjoyed this one. Perfectly cooked. Seasoned with care and the potatoes were the perfect coupling. I'm excited to go back and try more. And don't forget the delicious drinks. I got The Dolly which comes with a titty mug you get to keep. Just do it. I'll need another one because you can't just have one titty mug.

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE TROUBLE... we arrived for a celebration with reservations @6, there were 6 people at the bar... we waited patiently for the red head who was in deep conversation with guest seated at the bar to finish and come greet us, whew! She seated us took our drink order proceeded to get our server and headed to the bar , she grabbed our glasses to make our dr I nks and held them and cont her convo with bar guest glasses in hand for at least 10 min . We got our waters looked over the menu and ordered our starters, we were the only guest at tables to dine and waited 20 min for drinks, one drink was spilled from bumping into the other server and had to be remade. Drinks were good , starters to follow also good , we had party bread and mushrooms fried. Then came the entrée burger with buns charred black and my pasta with prawns also chared black! We asked foe new buns and a pasta instead of remaking prawns. We needed another cocktail but was never checked on or asked, finally got servers attention and asked what gins you had she didn't know, must be new, also didn't know about what the wines for the eve special and went to ask. We ordered a desert and then told it wasn't available, we were the first guest ordering food so not sure why they offered then said they didn't have it but put it on the bill anyway and had to have it taken off. The good... the cocktails made by the young lady with short blonde hair blue highlights. The bad ..... the price of the food that was burnt with the exception of the food fried, is the cook a fry cook? The ugly.... the red head didn't give a crap about anything but her conversation with the people at the bar who were not even ordering food! this was a painful 50 dollars a head meal to celebrate my son's new home in lockart, we have been to little trouble many times and never had a bad experience like tonight. "B" TEAM? MABYE I won't be going back , but seems like if I just wanted a drink at the bar and wanted to talk to the bartender this is the perfect place, dont drop $200 dollars like I did tonight to try and go out for a nice upscale meal in lockart you are better off getting BBQ! #FOODIE #BIGTROUBLEATLITTLETROUBLE

Service was very slow. We ordered salmon and chimichiri sliders. Food was average. Nothing striking. I will not return.

The Gruene Door did not disappoint! The drinks, appetizers, salad and main courses were all phenomenal with no exceptions. As someone with decades of food service experience, it's rare that I don't have something that I would change. But the service and food were both fantastic. The music was lively but not overbearing and the patio was calm. Our waiter was attentive, but not overly so; so we felt our needs were met without being hovered over. If I were to suggest anything, it might be nice to have candles on the tables, and maybe even a fire in the outdoor fireplace even though it wouldn't have needed for heat; just ambiance. Also the windows are tinted so darkly that initially I was afraid the restaurant was closed, so maybe consider an illuminated open sign facing the main road. But this place was great! We'll be back!

Table for 1, Occasion: 70th Birthday, and really looking forward to it since I skipped breakfast. The food was on point, as expected, BUT: The service from waitress LB went from dismal to downright baddd, from start to finish. It took her several minutes to approach my table. Her appearance matched her skills. Like she had just got out of bed, a real mess. She had poor communication skills, very loud, rushed, abrupt. Not a shred of finesse, which does not match the vibe of this nice restaurant. The lunch crowd was gone, there were 1, 2, then 3 tables filled in a large room that had ~10+ empty tables. But this poor thing ran frantically around and from room to room like it was a packed Saturday night. And there was a second waiter also assigned to our room. As I waited patiently for my lunch plate, she never once checked in. I wondered if they served bread, crackers, anything. I finally asked another waiter who said he'd tell her to get me their homemade bread. Waited some more, never spoke with her as she zipped by my table doing I have no idea what. She finally brought my lunch plate and still no bread arrived. Well into my entree, she arrived with one small square of delicious bread and butter explaining she had to toast it. Never saw her again throughout my meal. Finished, waited ~10 minutes, and she finally brought the check. Asked me if I wanted to see the dessert menu. I said no thanks. Is it ME? Or when a restaurant KNOWS it's a birthday, don't they at least offer a comped dessert?? Even Dairy Queen offers a small free treat. I worked at DQ in high school, and can confirm that LB wouldn't cut it there. I gave her a gift card and she disappeared for a long while. Returned with my card balance, then loudly asked if I wanted to pay her tip off the gift card. I said yes. LB: "How much?" (Loud) Me: "20%". (I gritted my teeth when I said that because had we not been announcing all this I would have left her maybe $5. She looked at my ticket and loudly said, "I guess that is about $11.63. Is that okay?" I quietly replied okay. She grabbed my card again then had to go get a manager to help her figure out how to charge the card for only tip. Meanwhile, the couple at the table heard everything and when she left the room they gave me a look of empathy and we all shook our heads. LB FINALLY returned and wished me a happy birthday. Bless her heart. How in the world does a nice, reputable restaurant let a server get away with all this? All the restaurant's expense, labor, and best intentions fly out the window when one server is low performance. I will return to The Gruene Door, but only on the condition that I'll be assigned another waiter.

Absolutely wonderful experience at Emmer & Rye with the fam tonight! This is one to try for sure!…read moreFirst off, beautiful restaurant with great people and great ambiance - service is attentive, kind, and genuine. Second - they have Michelin Green Star and are ZERO waste - and they explain throughout the meal how they make this happen. So very cool. And the food - 5/5 for sure! So good to know - we learned that the best way to order is sharing. The restaurant makes items as they're ready, and that means if you order a pasta, and someone else orders the chicken; you might be eating your dishes at different times. Good news! We love to try everyone so don't have to ask me twice! Standouts - Johnny Cakes with toasted egg foam. Delicious and decadent - not to be missed. The bread - everyone loved it. The butters and honey made on site using leftover cheese, yogurt and fruits (aka zero waste). All the pasta, but specifically the Cacio e Pepe - perfection. I could say something about everything but to suffice to say it was all wonderful!! Thanks for a great night!

We brought our friend's dogs to the outside patio, and the staff even brought out a water bowl for them which was sweet. The food came out at a good pace. They recommend 7 plates for 3 people, but we only ordered 4 since we had a heavy lunch. If we had a bigger appetite, adding an extra pasta or protein would round out the meal nicely. Smoked Gulf Oyster ($18): Four oysters served in a delicious pork and miso butter. I am not an oyster person, but this one completely won me over. The flavor is already perfect on its own, so the peach hot sauce on the side is entirely optional. Johnny Cakes ($16): Six small corn cakes with an egg foam sauce. The cakes were a touch salty, but the egg foam rounded things out nicely. Pappardelle ($24): Oh my goodness, the pappardelle was so bouncy and fresh that we were perfectly happy eating it on its own. That is not to say the smoked wagyu short rib was not equally enjoyable. The meat was tender and beautifully flavored. Texas Akaushi Wagyu ($65): The wagyu leaned on the saltier side, though it may be intentional. What really shined were the beef tallow sweet potatoes in black garlic sauce and chimichurri. They were delicious on their own and did a wonderful job of balancing out the richness of the meat.

One thing about The Kimberly... you will barely lift a finger besides to eat. Our water glasses were constantly being refilled, not just by our server but by anyone passing by. The service was just that attentive. Our server (I believe his name was Todd) was AMAZING--so kind and welcoming. He did such a great job walking us through the menu, pointing out his favorites and guest favorites. Gordon Ramsay would be proud. We shared the green beans and wagyu beef tallow fries, and they were literally heaven in food form. Our cocktails were just as good--I had a matcha drink, and my boyfriend got the Love & Lust. We both thoroughly enjoyed every sip just as much as our meals. Everything about the night was incredible.
