I came across Little Tokyo after searching for sushi on DoorDash. I've ordered a few times since then, and I always have a pleasant experience. My favorite non-sushi entree to order there is the Red Snapper Tempura ($14.95). It comes with miso soup, tempura veggies, rice, and dipping sauce. The fry is always light and crispy and well seasoned. The salmon tataki ($7.95) is also well dressed and seasoned. I appreciate that thy have amaebi ($3.50), since it's a bit hard to find out here. I don't care for the smoked salmon that they use for their Philadelphia rolls, so that's been moved out of rotation. But, rolls I do like from here are the Alaska Beauty Roll ($10.95), the Fantasy Salmon Tempura roll ($7.95), and the Dynamite Roll ($9.95). My one complaint is the service time. Each time I order, the dash time gets pushed back again and again, and I've even had dashers quit the order. Last time the restaurant called me and was super apologetic, and I like that they're busy. My food was sooooo good. Stepped out of my box and tried the snapper teriyaki and it was amazing! I wanted to save some for later but I ate it all. I wanted more today but they were closed. My lobster tempura rolls were also really tasty. If you have a hankering for something delicious, order the snapper. Can't wait to have this meal again! read more

Ordered the Chicken Katsu Don gonna be honest I have lived in this area for a long time never heard of anyone talk about this place I love chicken katsu and have order katsu don from multiple places in many different cities this was not bad, food was hot my biggest compaint is that the chicken was not as crispy as I would like on a fried chicken dish. Wish they woulda went with a more classic presentation with a bed of rice with veggies on top then the fried egg whole then the katsu but everyone does things different I ordered to go thru door dash it was ready well before the estimated time. My wife and I have been here multiple times in the past pre-Covid, but my job had me working Saturdays. Well we came in today on 3/2/2024 and there was a big problem with Little Tokyo. First, as we enter there is a table blocking the entrance door. A kid sets us down and for the next ten minutes we sat there waiting staring at the menus hoping that any trace of human life inside would notice us. It's not that hard to be noticed when we were the only 2 people in there but somehow we were forgotten. We sat there pouring over the menu over and over sitting waiting for anything, which never came.. No water. Nothing. Apparently there was some really enticing TV going on in the kitchen which is more important than paying customers. A guy even came into the sushi bar entrance but didn't seem to notice us. It was quickly weird there and we left after chilling for the aforementioned ten minutes. After this great display of ignorance and disrespect we went to Sakura Bowl and actually got service and food. I love the authentic Japanese cuisine. I had the shrimp and veggie tempura. I also ordered gyoza and an oshinko roll. They have online ordering which is easy to use. I walked up here after getting some Coca Cola from the Citgo down the street. When I came in, I was seated, the waitress asked if which drink id like and I said I needed some more time to decide. 30 minutes later, I finally got a can of Pepsi and a small bowl of miso soup. She thankfully apologized for the wait. The only positive things I'll say about this place is that the waitress was very nice despite not knowing too much English, she likes to chat with the customers to make up for the wait, she's also very considerate, also, the interior of this restaurant is a very nice atmosphere, it feels very authentic. Anyway, I ordered Yaki Udon, when it finally came out, it looked very nice and presentable, sadly, it didn't taste very great. The beef was quite bland and the noodles were average, I did enjoy the fresh veggies on top though. I think the noodles could've been better with more flavor. At the end of my experience, the waitress kindly offered a traditional Japanese sweet for free, she also took my can of Pepsi off the bill. If I do come back, I hope my experience can be a little better next time. There wasn't any music playing in the background, so the restaurant was very quiet. It seemed like there was only one person working and am curious to see how Little Tokyo is when its busy. Another great sushi place in the region...at last! It is hard to find good sushi in Northwest Indiana (NWI, "The Region" - like we belong to Chicago -, "The 219") . Now I am older, more refined, have traveled, experienced, and really learned...not all sushi is created equal. It used to be only House of Kobe for sushi here, how it's growing. This place was a fantastic find! I have had fast food sushi, horrible carry out only sushi, as well as random Miami and DC sushi. I have to admit sushi places are much more common along the ocean as well as very often much higher quality. So, leave it to a Midwest Native local gal to search, test, and review for there are less options available and less quality among our few choices when available. For we call Lake Michigan, "Going to the Beach." Laugh away, we do what we can. We even surf on simulators if cool enough to try. Haha. I visited with a friend about 60 minutes prior to close. We knew to be polite and not stall. I asked if we had time to eat without holding them over. The one man that past normal dinner hours Saturday night was our server, sushi chef, kitchen cook, and dessert chef. He must have been the owner. This was a DELIGHT. The sushi was fresh, delicious, and correctly priced. The rice & shrimp dish was HUGE and well made. This friend always gets the rice dishes when I want sushi so double food review! Haha. The portion was plenty that I shared my sushi rolls and he shared his rice, and we JUST were able to finish it all and still squeeze in dessert. Dessert here was dirt cheap, but the quality was excellent. We had the fried tempura ice cream, that tasted JUST like an elephant ear filled with ice cream. I wanted to try this place out for a while but it never worked out until now. After reading some of the previous reviews, decided that take out would be the route to go for this first time. Couldn't find a menu online, so couldn't call in an order for time savings. It was a weekday in the early afternoon when walked into the restaurant, was greeted quickly and asked if dining in or take out. After saying take out, had a menu and was choosing what to order. A take out order was leaving after started looking at the menu. Another take out customer came in while still trying to decide what to order. After the take out customer left I placed the order of one salmon sushi, one shrimp sushi, one king crab sushi, one eel sashimi, one eel avocado roll, and one miso soup. While the chef/greeter was preparing my order, more customers came in and were greeted with dining in or take out. They were dining in and were told that they could pick any place to sit. Have had limited sushi experience so am not an expert, but would give the following: Eel avocado roll -- 4 out of 5 eel -- 4-1/2 out of 5 salmon -- 4 out of 5 shrimp -- 2 out of 5 king crab -- 4 out of 5, would have been a 5 but had bones that weren't expected miso soup -- 3-1/2 out of 5 So for take out ordering, will give a rating of 4 stars. Purchased a Groupon for this place and after reading a few reviews here on Yelp, I was a little apprehensive to go. The reviews here are a little misleading; I'll explain. We walked in, was quickly seated, and a nice waitress took our order. The place was pretty empty. It started to get a little busier as we got out meals. Unfortunately, there was only one waitress on duty. That's where these reviews are misleading. I'll agree, it took a while to get our check and pay; however, the waitress did her best to care for all the tables as quickly as she could. As anyone that knows me will attest, I am a snob- especially when it comes to sushi. A friend and I decided to try this place after reading all of the reviews- both good and bad. First, it is Northwest Indiana- so that limits my expectation considerably. Also, it irks me when in a negative review they simply say service was bad or I didn't like it- if one is going to review anything be decent enough to tell me exactly why, that way it is easier for subsequent reviewers to determine if they have addressed the problems or not. They seem to get knocked for service quite frequently. We were there at an off hour (1:30) and there seemed to be two people there, the Chef and someone in the back making a decent amount of noise, presumably cleaning. The chef came to the table and took our order without writing anything down, do I was already dubious about what was to come. The chef ended up waiting on us the entire time. We ordered the oyster roll, tempura roll, black dragon roll, eel roll, crab tempura roll, dynamite roll, miso soup, and the crab salad, which was served with a ginger dressing (not to be missed). Not only was the order correct and came fairly fast I can sum it up in one word- WOW! Everything we had was on par with any of my favorite haunts in the city. The quality of the sushi was excellent, on par with anything from the city.The tempura was excellent with perfect mouth feel, the broth in the miso soup was on point. The menu is quite expansive and will take some time to get through. The menu is also not for the beginner as they don't have many pictures... so if one does not know the difference Maguro and Torro, don't hope there will be a picture of each so one can point and say "I want that". The menu also has a plethora of lunch specials- all of which sounded wonderful. I will go back to work my way through them. they offer also offer a couple of traditional Asian stir frys that seem to be ubiquitous here in NWI. Everything that we ordered came exactly as ordered and the sushi was exceptionally fresh! Sushi preparation is an art; one wrong slice or overhandling the fish too much while making the roll and the roll can be ruined. This man is an artist and certainly know what he is doing. My ONLY complaint (which is certainly forgivable since the chef and the worker were busy, especially with our order, was that the tables had not been bussed. it was addressed while we were waiting for our food (again by the chef), and done so very adeptly. Having been a small business owner myself, I certainly understand what it is like to wear all of the hats, and he was certainly doing just that. Everyone has good and bad days; since they seem to be shorthanded I would recommend visiting at an off hour, as we did. In consideration of the price: one does not go to a sushi restaurant looking for a bargain as fresh fish is NOT cheap. Lunch for the two of us came to $62- for that we got a ton of food and did not leave hungry. Had we been in the city at one of my usual dives the bill would have been well over $100. please note we got as many different things because it was our first-time visiting for both. Let me start by saying the food is not bad. However the service was atrocious. We asked for sriracha but she told us that she didn't want to waste it???? So we had a small pump of it. *** Groupon Users Beware *** Well, I can't review the food because we never went to this location. The bad service started on the phone. I had a Groupon for $75. The Groupon said "reservations required" so I called and made reservations. Luckily I mentioned the Groupon. That's when problems started. I was told "that's not for our location" I was told the exact thing at their other location in Illinois. Kind of funny when their phone number is listed right on the Groupon! When I asked to speak to a manager I was told "no". Further, the person on the phone was very rude. I see others had a problem with their Groupon too so I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've used Groupon about 20 times before at other establishments and have never had one single problem. Service The service here is absolutely horrible. I went there once a while back and was left sitting for 35 minutes and no one came to the table. I should have left. I was there with my boyfriend and my son last week as well. Service was fine while we were the only patrons in the restaurant. Close to the end of our meal about 3-4 other tables were filled and we were forgotten about. We sat for another 25 minutes waiting for our dessert when we finally asked someone for our check. After we paid and were about to leave, the server came running to us with our desserts and said they were free and apologized. A little too late. Food I order from them about once week, carry out of course. I really enjoy their miso soup, it's top notch. Their Philadelphia roll and shrimp tempura roll is delicious as well. I haven't found anything else all that enjoyable. We tend to order the same thing. Others have ordered with me before and not been all that impressed either. I have never been here before but decided to try it with my boyfriend because we need they had sushi. For starters, this place is your average "hole-in-the-wall" Asian restaurant. It was nothing fancy, but decorated in different types of Asian-cultured decorations. There were massive fish tanks at the what I'd assume was the sushi bar. However, the tanks were darkened in green water. Didn't look very clean. For the staff, we were seated quickly (there was nobody there). We took awhile to decide on what we wanted. They had a decent menu and plenty of rolls to choose from. We decided to go with a tempura shrimp roll, giant shrimp dumpling, and a firecracker roll. The shrimp roll and dumpling were great. I had high hopes for the firecracker roll (especially since it was $10+). Unfortunately, all I could really taste was the cream cheese. It was a bummer because everything inside of it sounded so good. The meal was about $30 and to be honest neither my boyfriend or I felt full. I think I'll try some other sushi places in the area first before coming back to this one. read more

Whether you have the owner serving you, or the high school student, who doesn't know a thing about sushi, at your service, you're doomed. The high schooler doesn't know anything about sushi, or even how their own menu is served, and the owner just seems to be there for the money. She never recognizes regulars and always asks if it's your first time. The worst part about it is they shove an 18% gratuity down your throat because they know they would never get tipped otherwise. All four stars are for the MOST WONDERFUL Special Veggie Roll! Holy cow, it was fabulous. I am not the biggest fan of sushi- don't really like the seaweed wrappers- but with the soy wrappers....WOW!
