We were so delighted to find this place. We came here on a Saturday evening for our 'date night'. The food is a very innovative blend of Danish and German with a modern perspective. We had a dinner of several appetizers - flatbread pizza, Danish meatballs, calamari, lobster crab puff, and a banger along with an incredible bottle of wine. This is a delicious place with very good pricing...the kind of place where you can drop by mid-week for a casual dinner. The service was very friendly and attentive. Lighthouse Café Corte Madera is part of a certain classification of Marin restaurants who don't feel they have to try very hard. This could be because they're milking the culinary reputations of surrounding San Francisco and the wine country. If the restaurants were 25% cheaper, then they could get away with the mediocre food and sloppy presentations, but they can be as expensive as their more superior counterparts. I keep vowing I won't go back to this restaurant, but it's near my husband's haircut place and it's convenient for my three year-old and I to have some breakfast while he's getting a trim. After this morning I will stick with my promise-never again. My waffle came out cold and hard. Hard like a racquetball, only it didn't have the added benefit of being useful in any way. It tasted like a cardboard cut-out of a waffle. Stay home and have some store-bought Eggos; it's the same experience. We requested turkey sausage to be scrambled into my daughter's eggs. That was too much for the kitchen to handle. She got eggs, no sausage, not even as a side. Okay, mistakes happen, but it took the server a full ten minutes to come back around and by that time my daughter was way into the syrup. The server brought out a side of sausage that was cold and burnt. Lighthouse Café must be ordering napkins from a special outfit that allows nature to skip the composting stage and dissolve right into pulp. There are a lot of kids at this place, and kids typically equal mess. It's interesting that other parents haven't complained about the magically dissolving napkins. I asked the server for more napkins after my paltry one had turned into a used Kleenex and she brought me exactly four. Which was just enough to soak up a single droplet of syrup before they deteriorated. As the server brought the check, she asked if I wanted more coffee. Yes, please. That didn't transpire until we were walking out the door. She must've known it wasn't good enough to warrant a second cup. I miss Toast in Mill Valley. Yes, it was equally expensive and no, it wasn't quite Tartine, but it was consistently great with servers and owners who seemed to care about their operation. Lighthouse Café caters to locals and I honestly feel Marin restaurants take advantage of us. It's too bad we don't get to enjoy the same fare as our more urban counterparts, yet we seem to pay the same prices. read more

I'm kind of surprised at the crummy reviews. I've returned several times (all for breakfast during the week) & 99% of the time it was grrrrreat! I've since tried the Lighthouse Combo, ham & cheese omelette, Annette's Scramble, 2 Eggs w/ hash browns, and French Toast (the only dish I wasn't too excited about). Coffee is still great. Service is consistently good in MY experiences! I hope folks will give Lighthouse a second chance if their 1st shot was under par. I've been very happy with this little gem! Was in the restaurant business for 14 years in a previous life. Nothing drives me crazier than bad service. My overwhelming experience with the majority of restaurants in Marin has been people getting your order wrong, or never coming to the table... even when there's half a dozen servers and even when they make eye contact with you, they still ignore you. In fact, in most cases, you have to get up from your table and look for someone to come to your table. Enter Lighthouse Cafe. The model that all restaurants should follow. First, the service is amazing. The service is quick and pleasant and they operate with the smallest team I've seen for a restaurant that size. In fact, Julie in particular is amazing. I've seen her single handedly take on the whole place when it was almost 3/4 the capacity and you would never know it. This isn't a fluke either... I've witnessed enough times to know that it's how she rolls all the time. She's constantly moving and no matter how busy she is, she's always pleasant and whatever you ask her for... she just takes care of it. The best part is she makes it look effortless. They are incredibly busy, but you never experience the tension or chaos that typically comes from places operating that lean and that busy at the same time Of course there are many other people there helping and supporting, but it's a testament of what a great hospitality experience should be like whether it's a small cafe in Corte Madera, or a 5 star restaurant in San Francisco. If you live in Marin, and want a great breakfast place that serves good food and provides the service you always wished existed out there... this is the place, hands down. read more

In Marin County it is very difficult to find any restaurant that is Germanic or Scandinavian influenced. Sure they are many Italian or Latin places. There are so many of those flavor profiles that one could never get to all of them. Imagine my surprise to find the Lighthouse. There are a number of reviews of the "old" place. I was never there and it does sound like there are several reviews that are comparing apples and oranges. This is review is about my experience with the current owners, menu and staff. We went to the Lighthouse for the "night" menu on a Saturday evening. My wife had purchased a Groupon coupon so it seemed like a good idea to visit. We were very warmly greeted and seated at a nice table in the window. The menu had some excellent choices such as Danish Meatballs, Wiener Schnitzel and a great salmon lasagne. We sampled a flatbread pizza, some Danish meatballs, a British banger, the calamari and a crab and lobster puff. If you are there during their happy hour all of those items are at a special price. Our experience was all around outstanding. We are looking forward to returning for another evening of wonderful food and service. read more

I came here for brunch with some family members. We were seated at a long table in relatively short order. Service seemed to get off to a sluggish start but then picked up steam. I had the all you can drink mimosa and I left with less than I could drink (always wary about "all you can X" offerings as generally these are limited by staff not returning often enough to make it worthwhile). The Caesar salad while large seemed to ignore that a Caesar should be made with the hearts of romaine. The dressing left much to be desired in the garlic department. The philly cheesesteak wouldn't be referred to as such in Philadelphia, but was a nice sandwich. The steak had good flavor and wasn't overcooked. Well...it wasn't good but it wasn't the worst either. Mediocre is the best way to describe it. I brought the kid I watch with me for a little brunch. We were greeted not very warmly by the woman(Mia) behind the counter. She didn't even offer me a child's seat... I had to ask for it. We finally sit down and another woman, Sarah, approached us. She was super warm and sweet. I wish we had been ready to order so we could have had her as our server. Instead, Mia, the other waitress came to take our order a bit later. She didn't even really welcome us. She was pretty unfriendly and didn't even make eye contact or smile at us. She took our order and quickly walked away. I got the ultimate combo which included two eggs, fruit pancake, hash browns, sausage, and toast, as well as a cranberry juice. I was pretty upset to see it was Kirkland cranberry juice cocktail. Who wants to pay $3.25 for a glass of juice that isn't real juice and is about $3.25 a bottle?!? Kind of insulting. The food overall was bland and the pancakes tasted as if there was lemon juice in it. I wasn't a fan. The only saving grace to this meal was Sarah. Mia didn't check on us once. I asked for an extra plate for the baby and she didn't even acknowledge I had said something to her until she brought the plate. In contrast, Sarah was friendly and approachable and nice to talk to. She spoke to is a few times throughout the meal. Mia only showed up when I put the money down on the bill. If I decide to go back, I will only go if I can guarantee Mia is not our server. This place has some of the best food in Marin. Hands down. And I like it because it's pretty fast, casual and a good value. Usually I'd expect food like this in a very fancy, stuffy, expensive cafe. But the quality and the value I receive every time I've been here is outstanding. The last couple times I went, the server I had, Katja I think is her name, was so friendly and fast, and really on top of her game. It's servers like her that remind me how hard that job is, so I'm inclined to tip more than usual. Plus she told me she has a one-year old at home so I feel good being generous. Plus how could I not? No. But it is pretty good, and it serves traditional eggs benedict - my "go to" brunch dish. Also, the Lighthouse Cafe serves unlimited Mimosas on weekend for $9.95, which is not a bad deal. I was going to get the Benedict since Benedicts are usually my go to but I decided to try their Stuffed Hash Brown (bacon, cheese, caramelized onions in between hash browns topped w/ 2 eggs -any style) It was huge. Too much for me to eat in one sitting. It was tasty and no doubt filling but I definitely prefer a more crispier hash brown & next time less onions. Skip the house coffee. For $2.50 you're better off going to Starbucks/Peets. Minus 1 star for our first breakfast experience here. It was a to go/pick up order. They got our order wrong, we asked for bacon in one of our breakfast orders & got sausage instead. We also paid extra for the fancier syrup for our pancakes. They included regular syrup as well but failed to label the syrup we paid extra for. We had no idea which was which. Our first experiences haven't been 5 stars but we'd like to come back & try their Scandinavian menu. We lived in Denmark for a bit a few years ago and miss some of the Danish dishes. Horrible customer service for mediocre food. I was not greeted. There was two girls sitting next to me at the counter and nobody was helping them. Meanwhile, the waitress was making small talk with a regular. Because other people were being helped first, I got the waitress' attention and pointed to the girls. She gave me a very short, rude answer (something like "I know, all right"). I felt so embarrassed, I should have just left then. My check was thrown onto my table without any words exchanged. Not a cheap place either! About $18 just for my egg-white dish after tax I think. Just about every customer in their was white with blonde hair except me. The Lighthouse seems racist. The worst place to go in Marin. Our server should be fired for insulting customers and just plan not doing her job. our order was forgotten all together. When we finally received our food it was wrong and it only took an hour of waiting... seriously we can't understand why it took so long with only 3 other customers I. An empty restaurant. when our rude waitress was done ignoring us she dropped off a check, we where charged for more then double what we ordered and things we didn't order at all. Our tab read $101 when in actuality it was only $41 we left $60. On our way to the door the waitress yelled and talked down to my father and mother. We were going hiking to Point Reyes from san fran, and totally forgot about breakfast. Pretty happy we did because we found this little spot. The owner (I think) is super nice and prompt.The atmosphere is really warm and just a nice time. They have AMAZING FRUIT PANCAKES! They put fruit in the pancake and make it. Their other pancakes are HUGE like they on their own could be a meal. They also have some danish food but we didn't try any. Also the hashbrowns ARE SO GOOD. The owner was just standing there, no action, no apology, nothing. The food and service were mediocre at best. There's obviously something terribly wrong with this place. I'm not sure if it is the unorganized kitchen, or the inefficient wait staff or the inattentive owner. It's unfortunate because the location is convenient to my home.
