I just had the best customer service imaginable at Scandinavian Designs in San Rafael, California. Store Manager, Malika Kapur, is outstanding. She was helpful with the selection and purchase and also issued a credit when asked. 5-Star customer service David G. read more

Malika was a HUGE help in helping me figure out what type of table and chair to order. My floors at my new home were different than the norm, I was struggling for months trying to figure out what would pair well with it. Malika guided me to what would look great with my floors and took a huge weight off my shoulders. The new table and chairs look great at home :) read more

On January 13, 2023, I purchased an Olivia Sofa from the San Rafael store. Within two years, the sofa developed a serious defect: the single-seat cushion has collapsed to the point that it sinks excessively, making the sofa uncomfortable and unsafe to sit on. I contacted the company to request either a repair or store credit so I could replace the sofa. Both reasonable requests were denied solely because I did not purchase the extended warranty--despite the fact that this is a clear product failure occurring well within a reasonable lifespan for a sofa. To make matters worse, it took from November 14, 2025, until today to receive a response at all (which I had to initiate). This prolonged delay and lack of accountability reflect extremely poor customer service. read more

We bought 2 stressless chairs after shopping around and becoming convinced the design would be more comfortable than the alternatives. We put this pair in our motor coach to ease the body after a day of travelling. The chairs exceeded our expectations and we would buy them again! As a big framed dude, after 3 years of usage, the stem from the base to the main part of the chair shifted so the chair leaned, making it unusable. Turns out the mechanism was redesigned, and when I called SD in San Rafael the store manager sprang into action. She called her rep and had the replacement part shipped to us where we happened to be hanging out. It was super easy to install and this old dude is a happy camper! Great product, great store, great manufacturer!! read more

I have bought several pieces over the years. A 10 year old bedside table was sat on and it couldn't handle the weight. I brought it in and was told to check in with the guys in the back. Hector and Al, took a few hours and returned to me a well repaired table that is sturdy and shows no sign of repair. Huge thank you to them for being good humans and craftsmen. read more

I would give the manager, Malika ten stars if possible. She's thoughtful, professional and goes the extra distance to make her customers happy. We bought a Ronan massage chair and had some issues. She explored multiple options and came up with a solution that made us very grateful to her. The Ronan chair is an amazing massage chair that we've recommended to friends and family. The business world needs more managers like Malika. read more

very disappointed with this company. we spent quite a bit for a sofa. With in a few months the seat on one side started to collapse. This co. took a 5 months to respond. it took a year to have them repair it. Soon after this repair it failed again. The company told us that they would no longer repair our sofa. I recommend that if you are looking for furniture this is not the store to visit. read more

Malika, the store manager, is customer focused and did whatever she could to make us happy. After purchasing our furniture we found at that it was horribly back ordered. Malika gave us many options and finally found a solution that was a win-win for both of us. It makes us want to continue shopping with Scandinavian Designs read more

Sedrick was the kindest! I have a Ekornes couch that needed a replacement part and Sedrick contacted Ekornes himself and arranged to have the part shipped to me. I did not even purchase the couch at Scandinavian designs! This was all at no-cost, including the replacement parts. When I first called, he was so quick to problem solve for me, and was also so patient and kind in the process. He started an email chain himself so that he won't forget about it later! This is by far the best service I've received from any furniture store. Thank you so much Sedrick, you extraordinary! read more

My fiancé and I LOVED visiting the store in San Rafael! We live in SF and frequently look online, but this was the first time we visited a store in-person. I was like a kid in a candy shop - it was beautiful and so well designed! I want to give a special shoutout to Cedric for going above and beyond! He gave us a proper tour of the store, provided excellent advice for designing our new apartment, and helped us purchase two more kitchen chairs that matched our other Scandinavian Designs chairs at home. Once they arrived during the week, he really went out of his way to help us accept delivery. Cedric is the best - he made our trip so memorable and because of him, we will keep coming back! Thank you Cedric!! read more

We moved in last year and needed living room furniture. Ashu helped us find the right living room furniture to match our house style and please both of us. She spent considerable time making sure the colors were balanced and the sizes were just right. Because of the supply-line issues it took months before we received our pieces. They turned out to be well worth the wait. The delivery was excellent as the men put together the furniture and took away the packing materials. read more

Do not shop here! We bought a table for $800. After 7 months it started pilling, obvious defect. We called 5 times and have been dragged with "someone will get back to you" for 4 months. When they did, they said we are not in warranty (because we waited) and nothing to do. I highly recommend shop elsewhere or online and ask for a warranty sticker/form. read more

I have always wanted a leather quality leather couch. I had not visited this new location. It was really nice. I found the Braxten Loveseat quickly and sat in it and fell in love! Then, I was helped by Thayer, who was informative, calm, chill and patient. He showed me various options, including clearance items. I said I did not want to make a rash decision so I would come back on Sunday. Thayer gave me his card and work number in case I had more questions. I ended up asking some more questions and coming to the conclusion that the Braxten was the right choice, and he mentioned there was a matching ottoman, as my current one was not matching. Well, fast forward a few days later, my new furniture arrived and was installed. And several weeks later, I have zero regrets and really enjoy my new room and my adult accomplishment of having a very nice leather sofa. Thayer even sent me a thank you note. Nice touch. Thanks, SD! read more

Love this store! I always find true interior design inspiration every time I stroll in here. And when I say "stroll," I usually wind up spending 30 minutes exploring every one of their showrooms. Over the years, I've purchased a variety of things at Scandinavian Designs (from wall hangings to couches to rugs). And to this day, I still own all of these items (and that says a lot). At Scandinavian Designs, the merchandise quality is top-notch. The price is always reasonable (especially in their downstairs area). And the service is consistently stellar. If you are in the process of designing/re-designing your home and you want a serious style/quality upgrade from IKEA, then pay a visit to your local Scandinavian Designs store. You'll thank me for it. read more

Sedrick Smith is very knowledgeable about products at the San Rafael location. His expertise helped me picked out the correct item with no issues. I was very pleased with his customer service looking forward to purchasing again in the near future thanks to his hospitality and vast knowledge of products at Scandinavian Designs. A sales lady, Ashu, helped me find the perfect furniture and rug for my living room. A great shopping experience.

First, I'd like to be clear that my purchasing experience with Julie was not an issue. If anything she was so patient with my millions of questions. This issue is now with management and the lack of communication. This sectional I purchased did not have the second latch installed for them to hook together. I immediately communicated the issue on 12/28. I never heard an update and followed up at the start of February. Now, after being told it'd arrive mid February since the delay is based on how full a truck is I am being told to wait until 3/12. Mind you I'm pregnant and having to continuously deal with a moving sectional. They don't want to explain more, be proactive in their communication, or follow up unless I call/ email/ and show up at the store asking what's the status. That is what pisses me off. If there's a delay, okay. Do NOT make me be the one to follow up. I made that clear on 2/16 with the manager directly. She promised to follow up within two days with some sort of answer. NOTHING. I'll follow up with snapshots of my emails to show the vagueness of the communication. read more

Thank you Chester and the entire Scandinavian Designs staff. I've been shopping your store all year for my new home. Great service- you even helped me load my car! When a few things were not perfect you jumped in to make it right. No hesitation, no excuses. Great customer service seems to be a lost art sometimes. I appreciate your philosophy. I was not sure of what sofa to get but thanks to Alex the ideas that he gave me and the great customer service!

Excellent furniture quality, great price and excellent service! Highly recommended!

Basically, this company is great, and my rating is based mostly on the products they sell. The floor people are nice and as helpful as can be, but the problem is there is so much inventory they have a hard time knowing what's available and how long it will take to order if not in stock. It took about 7 weeks to get a small dresser I ordered, but the man in the loading area was a great help, loading it onto my car. I do recommend Scandinavian Design and the staff is pleasant, but just be aware that if something has to be ordered, you may have to wait. We love all the furniture we've bought from the store. read more

Sales people were not overly helpful but bedroom set was exactly what I wanted. at a reasonable price. 2years later I had to move, a very predictable event for most of us at some stage. It was then I discovered the bed slats were barely secured with childishly inadequate fasteners so the whole frame fell apart and I had to basically rebuild the whole thing on the fly and btw in 110 degree heat. This is disgraceful merchandising, the product cannot even be described as designed or built to junk store or standards. The result for the customer was hours of fixing what Scandanavian Design knew or should have known was a defective product. I am contacting them to specify a store credit to compensate for my labor to fix their product. read more

Great showroom!!!!! Sales Person, Ashu Sikand, understood what I was looking for,....extremely knowledgeable and low key....Her knowledge and guidance created the perfect furniture for my small place. This purchase has been a nightmare. First, they over charged me by $500 for no apparent reason. The person at the store confirmed, yes we over charged you by $500+, but She had no way to fix it. I canceled the order. I started over with an online order. I received an email that my item was back ordered. Even though it didn't show on back order. Finally after 3 fulls months, it arrives for delivery. I explain to the person who called, that they need to deliver in a small truck. She never gets back to me. I call again, they inform me they are booked for deliveries. I now have to wait two more weeks. My son has slept on the floor on a mattress for months while they over charge me, don't get back to me, leave a phone number missing digits. Shop elsewhere. read more

When we needed a new sofa, we returned to Scandinavian Designs, as we had several times in the past. We selected a style, color and other specifications to have our custom sofa manufactured. The sofa arrived and has been wonderful for many years. After we had had the sofa for 3 years, I contacted the store and spoke to our salesperson to let her know of a development. The stitching in the leather of the seat cushion had started to separate and an opening was beginning to form, wherein the batting and other fill materials were starting to show. I asked her what the guarantee was on their bespoke upholstery and she couldn't be bothered to even give me a clear answer. She mumbled something (under her voice) and basically said that I would have to take the sofa to a local upholsterer to have it resewn because "it was not their problem." Over time, the unstitching got worse. Sure, there are lots of choices out there when it comes to buying furnishings for one's home, but when you spend upwards of four figures on a piece of furniture, you expect the company to stand behind their product, their workmanship, integrity and reputation. I will never do business with this company again, at any of their locations and I will share this experience when anyone that I know is in the market to buy furniture. I will let them know to steer clear of S.D. Note: I have a great deal of experience purchasing furnishings because of my over 30 years in the design and building industries. read more

When I decided to replace all the old worn-out furniture in my living room I shopped around for a month (on-line and in local stores). I'm glad I ended up going with Scandinavian Designs on 4th Street in San Rafael. I'm super happy with the quality and design of my new furniture. I enjoyed my purchasing experience and appreciated the reasonable prices. I found the staff at the store friendly, helpful, and easy to work with. I feel I got a great deal on some pieces I hope to have for many years to come. read more

My boyfriend just moved into the SF area. He was in need of a furniture store FAST with excellence in design and quality of furniture construction for a reasonable price. We found that PLUS very knowledgeable and helpful customer service. And in terms of people who know how to deliver top service from day one, the delivery schedule and ability of the movers to magically (not really...it's pure skill and experience) get our sofa and table into our apartment was phenomenal. Kudos to the two of them too! read more

I went in enthusiastic and excited to make a purchase after speaking with a sales associate the prior week. I was sitting on the piece of furniture I was hoping and planning on purchasing when another sales person asked me if I had any questions. I asked her about the potential of 10% off which the prior woman had quoted me and she looked at me like I was crazy and asked who had given me that information. She said she didn't know why someone would have communicated that. Anyway-she left to 'find out' about the misinformation and never came back. I left, disappointed and turned off. I loved the piece but have no desire of going back in. read more

Wow people sure complain about this store a lot. Hmmm....no matter where you order furniture, it does seem to take forever, so I can understand being impatient. I like much of their style of furniture, and the San Rafael location is quite a bit nicer overall than the Berkeley store. It's larger and easier to see most of what they have - Berkeley is spread out over 4 floors, some of them small, due to the nature of the building layout (an old bank). San Rafael also seems much more professionally run with staff who are on the ball....Berkeley...oy. I would call them disinterested. Anyway, I wanted a sofa that was in stock, I can't stand waiting either. Had it in a few days, and it was a really fair price for a good quality piece. I suspect we'll be going back for a few more pieces of living room furniture as we are on a tear. read more

They effin blew it.. After a 2yr search for a couch, me and the wife finally settled on a sectional. Could of made it to the Berkeley or San Mateo store but decided to give San Raphael store a chance because the manager seemed real cool and friendly last time I went to the store. Brought the wife to the store to finalize the fabric style.. Why wouldn't they have all their fabric samples available? That's just idiotic to me.. We drove all the way across a bridge to give them business .. To top it all off, the "sales" woman came off with the biggest attitude and didn't give a rat's ass that we were pissed.. Didn't even to offer to give us an estimate when all their samples would be back.. F!#!!#)k!!! read more

Scandinavian Designs store in San Rafael has a great selection of furniture in different styles and of good quality. Their website was most helpful for pre-selecting the pieces I needed. I bought a bed and two nightstands in mid-century style. The service at the San Rafael store was excellent, great help from the sales person who ensured that the delivery was set up at my convenience and checked if the furniture was delivered on time. The delivery team was great, they gave me a 30-minute advance notice and showed up on time. They were very efficient in bringing the furniture into my house, which is on the hill, and quickly assembling the bed. Excellent service from the beginning to end. If I ever need furniture, Scandinavian Designs will be my #1 destination. read more

Most furniture requires self assembly and the directions are poor and ambiguous. Because they sell it all over the world there are no actual directions just parts lists and diagrams, and the diagrams are very hard to follow. (I've built kits that were easier to deal with including actual airplanes - not models!) Also the components have gotten way cheesier. A three drawer file cabinet took almost 5 hours to assemble. The veneer chips very easily so we are having to order a replacement facing for the large file drawer. I built one of these 8 years ago and it was a pain, so I was braced for the experience but not for the deterioration in the quality of the individual pieces. Put it together according to the diagram but had to completely disassemble it again because the locking plate was upside down and the lock would not function. A really miserable experience. Looks good on the showroom floor but unless you are prepared to pay them to put it together for you with a guarantee, don't even think about it. Also plan on it lasting a very short time because of shady materials. A real p.o.s.! read more
