Stopped here for coffee with a couple of girfriends. I thought it was a coffee shop but it turns out it's actually a bar/coffee shop. The place was nice and quiet on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The bartender was nice but didn't go out of her way to be personable especially since we ended up being there for at least 2 hours. The front door does not close all the way unless you make sure it latches. I ended up getting up to close the door a few times after people entered or exited. Things that make Liberty awesome: 1) Happy Hour 4-7pm EVERYDAY 2) Drink list is separated into poison of choice. If you're indecisive like myself, good luck! 3) Attentive and helpful staff who confidently recommend drinks and check in with you regularly. 4) The drinks are SO GOOD my friend and I had 3 different cocktails each (and no food) in one afternoon. I'm a wino, so when I saw that there was only one red wine and and one white wine on the menu, I got a little scared. For my first drink, I decided to order a cocktail since it is apparently the main focus. I ordered the Seattle Sour, which has bourbon, lemon juice and egg whites. I enjoyed it, but I'm not really that into cocktails, so I don't think I can really review the quality. I loved the ambiance, except for the strange seating situation. I was on a date, and the only place we could find was a little window booth. The low table was far enough away that we had to reaaaach to put our drinks down, and we had to sit next to each other, making our necks hurt to look at each other. There was also two couches that looked like were housing about 3 different groups of people rather awkwardly. This is Seattle! We don't like to talk to strangers! ;) All in all, I don't think I'll be back because I need a good wine list, but I can see why it's so popular. read more

I was a bit leery about Liberty after reading mixed reviews, but after this weekend, I'm a fan. We were promptly seated at 7:30 on a Sat night. Our server was very nice and gave us just the right amount of space and time to order. The rolls sounded iffy on the menu, but tasted interesting (in a yummy kind of way), and the cuts of fish we got with our sushi were just right, and tasted very good. The prices were also very good. As were our drinks. Overall, I liked it and would go back. But please note: this is not the place to go if you are looking for a true sushi experience. Fun place, good vibe, unique atmosphere. The only thing preventing this review from being 5 stars was the service. It was somewhat friendly but not very personable. Our waiter had no sense of humor whatsoever, however our waitress was somewhat friendly. We were entertaining a friend from Australia and he felt the same. Sushi was outstanding. Cocktails were good. We got an $11.40 discount off our bill for just mentioning that we are "Yelp Pals" of Liberty. One thing to Note: Using a credit card for payment adds another $0.50 onto your bill. My favorite bar in Seattle with great sushi and unmatched service. While Canon might have them beaten in terms of whiskey selection now, the owners take great pride in finding new things for you to try based on brands and flavors you like. One thing to note: if it's busy, the bar service does tend to slow down. If you're looking for a quick drink, don't want to talk with people you're there with, or just want to get wasted quickly- do yourself a favor and walk across the street to the Canterbury. This is probably the greatest neighborhood bar I have ever known. read more

A neat loungey place with a wide alcohol selection. I feel a bit out of place asking for basic wells like house gin and tonic or whiskey ginger, but the bartenders are sharp and take great care with everything they make. I even have friends ask them to experiment and surprise them, and they're always super accommodating on that front. They also have a cool little sushi menu. I'm a fan of the Alaska Rolls. The big issue is the cramped seating. Once there's any sort of crowd it can be tough to find a comfortable place to sit. You need to get there early or sneak in on an off night. Plus it's not a particularly sociable crowd or staff. If you're not there with somebody it can be an unusually lonely experience for a crowded bar. read more

Ordered the Poki dish on the menu priced at $8.00. They charged me $10.00 stating that it was my choice of fish - yellowtail - for the up charge. It's not clear where there are up charges on the menu, let alone what kind of fish the $8.00 Poki provides. Then on top of that, Liberty charges my credit card about $40.00 for a $10.00 purchase. Not happy at all with this place. They should get their act together or get out of my neighborhood. Very deceptive business. Now I have to clear up with my bank an overcharge of $30 bucks. This is probably one of my favorite places to get a really fun cocktail on captiol hill. Their menus area really cute and the drinks have fun names and ingredients with cool presentation. The one negative thing I wish I could change is that sometimes they play really surprising music really loudly that seems to suit the bartender more than the bar. I was going to ask them to change it, but was with a friend who said she'd tried that once and got in trouble, so I kept my mouth shut. read more

I like this place a lot. Cool atmosphere, creative drinks, and tasty sushi-- why aren't more bars like this? It can get crowded, so if you're in a large group, you need to come early or just assume you're not getting a seat. However, there are some really comfy couches for sitting around, drinking and munching. For the vegetarian crowd, the veggie rolls are really tasty, and far more complex than your typical cucumber roll. The menu is comprehensive, and contains a lot of new things to try. Not what you expect to see. It's a whiskey bar with a small sushi bar at one end. The teddy bear guy behind the bar was cool, laid back and took our orders quickly. Slick the sushi chef spent the first 10+ mins on the phone chatting away. Now we're the only ones in here ordering anything and just waiting for him to finish. When sushi arrived it was ok. not the quality we expected from other reviews but it wasn't bad. Oddity - there are flies circling just inside the doorway but they dont seem to be anywhere else and didn't come near us or our food. It was a hot day - just weird. read more

The best Negroni I've had in Seattle! I stopped by because Liberty is featured on a list of places to work and sure enough, there were multiple folks on laptops, writing in notebooks, etc., right alongside groups socializing and couples on dates. There are some couches, a lovely high-top bar with tall chairs (I find stools really uncomfortable so the chairs with a back are a big plus), and some tables with benches. Wifi is free and open (no password required), cocktails are delicious ($11-15), and the sushi looked great although I didn't eat any. I will definitely add this spot to my regular rotation, especially if I'm working late at night. read more

We ordered 2x "Point of no return"s. It is currently being described by the table as: 1. A reason to not return to this bar 2. A pile of earthworms that has been set on fire. This is not good... A shout out to fellow sudamericanos -- they have pisco! The Good-- many, many drink options including international liqueurs that can be a bit tricky to find. The waitstaff/bartenders are not only friendly but very helpful in your efforts to find the best deal on the menu. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere- music isn't too loud and the lightning's perfect and dim-- a bit romantic, really. The Bad-- Happy hour sushi only included one item, which wasn't vegan. It can get really crowded, so make sure to get there early! Also-- The drinks here are a bit stronger than elsewhere-- ended up a bit drunk after only two gin and tonics. read more

I love this gem on the Hill. It's so laid back and the wait staff are knowledgeable of the menu and give wonderful recommendations. Decent sushi and huge drink menu, lots of quality choices. I really like the hidden room behind the door with a mirror, next to the restrooms.. it's like entering a secret room in Harry Potter (sorry for the nerdy reference but I'm not kidding!) "CLOSE THE DOOR!" Those were the words that greeted me (from patrons, not staff) when I first walked into Liberty. The door does not, apparently, close on its own. Despite the cheery introduction I found myself enjoying Liberty. Its an odd mix of sushi, cocktail, and coffee shop. I started my experience with an espresso shot (I meant to get a cappuccino...but I had a brain fart). The espresso shot tasted like espresso (win!). I saw that Libertys sushi was highly praised and I had ordered myself to get sushi while in Seattle for the night. I ordered the Gaslight which came out pretty quick. The wasabi was nice and fresh. The sushi was the large sushi piece variety and fairly chewy with a little crunch. In truth, while everything tasted fresh I felt it was a little bland lacking in flavor. I would be willing to try their other rolls though. By no means bad but I was hoping for more. I ordered a seattle sour to wash the sushi down and it was delicious. A perfect mix of beer and liquor. It had a nice kick and tasted great. There was a decent variety of people in Liberty when I came in. I didn't get a chance to check out the secret room. The layout of the main room is a little odd and I felt a little awkward when I first came in. No room at the short bar and all of the side tables near the bar were taken. So I sat at one of the two big sofas and ate and drank at the coffee table in front of me. Nothing wrong with it, but I felt disconnected from the rest of the restaurant. I don't visit here often, but they are dog-friendly, and when my insane rescue dog is restless, we'll walk here for a cocktail, and suddenly she transforms into a perfect angel (she knows it is a privilege- it's sweet). Really strange experience tonight. Not busy, 8:30pm on a Friday. It's a small space with a TON of staff. I attempt to sit at the seat in the middle of the bar (3 seats available - two together, one sandwiched between people). My goal is to be the less-annoying bar patron who doesn't absorb the 2-spot for a couple. I ask if the seat is taken (empty glass), and the bartender snaps, "there's someone sitting there." From that point in, she wrote me off and did not look me in the eyes or address me for this entire weird experience. I moved down, and sat with my dog where "I was allowed." No one addressed me or asked if they could get me a drink for ten minutes. It wasn't super busy, two servers were standing on the side debating whether they should take a shot of Cynar or Amaro. Finally, the nice, long-haired barback noticed that not a soul even recognized my presence and took my drink order. The bartender (a strong woman -- I think that's the most accurate description) took the service ticket that he put in, made the cocktail, and set it back in the service well INSTEAD OF DELIVERING IT TO ME AT THE BAR RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER. I thought, maybe that is how they do things -- she makes service tickets and has the barback do all of the bar service? Nope. She greeted other guests, make their cocktails, and delivered them straight-up. Not only is this insulting, but coming from the Las Vegas (and Seattle and Boston) bartending scene, maybe I'm expecting something more. If I don't have time to immediately take an order, I greet the guest within 30 seconds, and tell them that I'll be with them shortly. The service well/servers generally can see whether a guest is waiting, and jumps in to help out. Is Seattle service just this bad? The barback finally came to the rescue and recognized that my card was on the bar to close out. I tipped 20%, and quietly left. I will never be back. One star because the long-haired barback who loved Topo Chico treated me like a human. read more

I visited liberty along with 20 of our closest friends in early November by hosting a surprise birthday party for my girlfriend in the back room. Not only was the their staff great in helping me book the palace but the service during the the event was amazing. Peter was helping over email to get everything set up a month in advance. Everything was perfect. The day off, the staff allowed us to go in early, showed us how to get the music going, everything was ON POINT! Passion is beautiful, and the passion at Liberty is mixed drinks. The main three guys who tend the bar have an encyclopedic knowledge. This is the sort of place where you can make a request such as: I like dry drinks, clear liqueurs and bitters, and a "Cristo" emerges (Gin, Pernod, bitters and an orange twist). Because they care about mixing drinks they love talking about it. For me personally, it is all the better to fire up a couple of neurons learning about the origin some odd drink before I use it to douse those neurons in a 100 proof wash. The Sushi is good, some nights it is real good, some nights OK. I wish I could point out the sushi chef to get, but it seems to be a revolving door. Weekends tend to pack the place so tight the windows fog and seats are impossible to get. Worse there are few places to stand where you are not in some traffic lane. Go mid week, get there early and grab a seat at the bar where you can ask and sample. We used to live on 17Th and Galer which is just stumbling distance away. This is important as the drinks get poured with a generous hand. Now that it is driving distance we have to consider the risks carefully. read more

There are some definite neighborhood locals who frequent it, but don't seem to into the fact that there's sushi, or a lounge; they just wanna booze. Looking forward to my next trip to Liberty. I've been once for their awesome Happy Hour, and then again just for a quick drink with a friend on a Friday Night. Happy Hour: We ate sushi for dinner, accompanied by some amazing cocktails. Both the sushi and the drinks were great. The sushi came out pretty slowly, but the drinks were fairly quick. It wasn't very crowded, and we got seats, which seems like it may be an issue at a more popular drinking time. Drink on a Friday Night: No seating to be found, so we sat in the back... kinda by the bathrooms. Lots of couches for lounging back there, but we were the only ones in there so not sure it was totally legit. Amazing drinks, ordered at the bar. Fresh squeezed grapefruit + vodka = amazing. read more

I have been to Liberty multiple times and have never had a bad experience. The sushi is not the best in town and the selection is pretty limited but it is good and I continue to go back for more. One suggestion, try to get there during happy hour. The prices are great but it can be pretty packed. read more
