Another review for a place I've only experienced from a dark back room: do these count? Last night, I went to Liberty for a Hurricane Sandy Relief trivia night put on by some friends of mine. When I first arrived, I found the bar full of a bunch of strangers and I thought I might have the wrong spot; however, I checked with one of the employees and she pointed me to the back room (which I found after an awkward dramatic entrance into a dark, empty bathroom, but I digress).
The room was full of people I mostly knew, plus a bunch of nice couches and other comfortable seats. Nice lighting, our own music, and plenty of space for at least twice the people we had there. I perused a totes impressive cocktail menu and made my selection (Grapefruit Guava Rickey) while we waited for the server to return.
She finally came in and hurriedly made her way around the room, clearing empties, taking orders and cards, checking in about food. I ordered my drink and gave her my card and after only slightly too much time she returned to me with a very lovely drink that included one of those cool freezing silver spoon-straws. (Confidential to Slurpees everywhere: Jealous much?) The drink was delicious, and I forcefully tried the drinks of several friends - one tasted like an old man in the woods but good somehow, and one was lavender and lemon and fizz and very, very good. I checked out the food menu but somehow it didn't feel like the kind of place I wanted sushi from. Unfortunately, that's all they have (nary an appetizer or salad to be had), so I decided to wait until I'd get home to eat.
My dude showed up, though, and placed a sushi order. After a few heated rounds of trivia and several other folks in the room getting their sushi and drink deliveries, we asked where ours was. The waitress said she'd check on it and left us for a little more trivia and a little more stomach grumbling. Before we knew it, the night had ended and we were starving and a little confused.
The server was trying to close out everyone's tab and, I later learned, working the front of the house as well. She came up to me and apologized profusely, having found out that although our order had been entered it was somehow missed and was never made. She took it off the bill and gave us a discount on our drinks, PLUS she drew a heart on the receipt! I'm a firm believer that accidents happen, especially in group settings like this, and the way she handled it was very kind and left me with a positive impression of Liberty.
I'd probably never come here if I was hungry or it was after 7:30pm on any night between Wednesday and Saturday, because it's too small and too popular - as I was leaving, there were already throngs of people just standing around next to the bar ordering drinks and food with nowhere to sit. No way, dudes - old people gotta sit. That said, if I was looking for a place near home to meet someone for a very good cocktail or four, I'd definitely come back here again. The hanging plaques above the bar with names of the whiskeys and bourbons they're currently serving almost got me to stay for another round last night! read more
