I had an espresso martini with a delicious rim that really set the tone for the night. We started with the little necks, and the broth was incredible--easily one of the best versions of this dish I've had, and it's something we order often. I couldn't pass up the grilled octopus since it's a favorite of mine whenever it's on a menu, and this one was cooked perfectly--tender, flavorful, and just right. My husband ordered the steak with egg, and it was cooked to perfection. He's from the Azores, so we can be pretty particular about Portuguese food, but this place truly exceeded our expectations. A member of our party has a gluten allergy and Libertine was the first restaurant that came up in the search for a GF Italian in the North End. It's pretty difficult to find a bad experience in the North End, but we managed just that at Libertine. 1. It was very hot and humid but the air conditioning was not on. They have open half walls to the street, as many restaurants do. But other places we went had their AC on as well. I'd say it was around 85 in there because the food is being cooked in the open. If I was feeling generous, I'd say 82. At some point, it did seem to kick on maybe an hour into the meal. But it never cooled off. 2. A lovely vocalist began singing with a microphone. We recorded her at 95 decibels. The equivalent of a motorcycle. The following evening we saw her, again, in another restaurant and the microphone was not as loud and she was fine. 3. The most concerning part of the evening is that two in the party ordered non alcoholic beer. One can't have it for health reasons and the other has been sober for 35 years. As he took a giant sip, he realized it was alcohol and jumped up and ran out to spit it out. This is an unforgivable error. As a gluten free person, I love how they are able to make anything BUT the ravioli gluten free. However, we were underwhelmed by what we ordered. The cheese curds had zero seasoning but the aioli it came with helped. The chicken parm was better since it was slathered in sauce and cheese but I still felt it lacked seasoning. We chose this fusion Portuguese Italian because it was 99% gluten free and with my son having celiac every now and then you want to go somewhere where he can indulge in everything. Loved the deep fried calamari and meatballs which he can never order anywhere else. We didn't have a reservation but we were able to grab a seat at the bar. The bar is big and comfortable, some tvs for games and bartenders are very friendly. The beer was good. The espresso martini was not very good. We've tried a lot in the area and Boston in general, and this one was bottom of the barrel. It was also a lot darker than most we've had, so not sure what made it so bad. The fried calamari was only that: fried calamari. It didn't taste like it was seasoned and lacked flavor. Popped in about 1 PM for lunch on a weekday with some out-of-town friends. Seated immediately at one of the few empty tables and the server was prompt and friendly. He was knowledgeable about gluten. He returned quickly with our drinks and took our orders. The food arrived about 10-15 minutes later, and the consensus was that it was "fine". (More patrons were now seated, so it became busier) Asked for bread/rolls for the Caprese when it was delivered to us,I and finally had to get up to ask another server; 10-15 minutes later it finally arrived. Water glasses sat empty until we asked for refills. The reviews for this place are generally good, so not sure if this was a one-off instance or if they're having staffing issues.... read more

This was a horrible experience and some of the most disrespectful service I've experienced. I came to this restaurant with my Dad for his birthday. It was a last minute trip for him so we didn't have a reservation but walked in to see if they could seat us to which the hostess told us to sit at the bar. We sat and a bartender gave us menus and took our drink orders. Neither of us ordered any alcohol and he brought our drinks and was about to take our food order when another bartender abruptly came over and interrupted to ask me for my ID. I'm 24 and wasn't planning on drinking and didn't have my ID with me, which admittedly was my fault. I told her I didn't have it with me and wasn't drinking but could show her a photo of my passport or ID. She was being relatively loud and the interaction was drawing the attention of several other people at the bar and in the restaurant which was humiliating. After telling her all I had was a photo she caused a larger scene telling us we had to leave the restaurant because she can't serve someone underage (made it clear again I was trying to order alcohol at all was merely seated at the bar). Once again I'm 24 and with my dad and was likely the same age as everyone else seated at the bar (who I didn't see her ID). It was a beyond embarrassing experience and while I understand not allowing someone to sit at the bar without their ID, she went extremely out of her way to ask me after we had been there for a while and unnecessarily humiliated me in front of everyone in the bar area ending in kicking us out. Libertine is a Portuguese-Italian fusion restaurant and a must try for those who eat gluten-free! The menu is advertised as 98% gluten-free (with the exception of ravioli dishes, such as the lobster ravioli). Libertine has a generous drink selection which includes port wines, hard seltzers, mocktails, and of course gluten-free beers... on top of the standard beer, wine and cocktail selection. Each appetizer at Libertine can be made gluten-free. My table opted to go with the choco frito (fried Portuguese style cuddle fish). The cuddle fish themselves were lightly breaded and perfectly fried, and served with a garlic sriracha aioli. Ideally there could have been a few more pieces of cuddle fish for the $23 price tag, but it was filling enough as an appetizer. For main dishes, I ordered the lobster tail ravioli (non gluten-free) and my companion ordered the lobster tail carbonara, a gluten-free dish. Both dishes came out hot and in decently sized portions (not too small, but not big enough to take home for leftovers). The lobster ravioli came with six large ravioli. Both the ravioli and the lobster tail carbonara came in a creamy sauce filled with surprise chunks of lobster claw, which were cooked to an enjoyable and flaky consistency. The service at Libertine was friendly and the food came out in a reasonable time. Our server offered us dessert at the close of our meal, though we did not have any more room and declined to see the dessert menu. The check total was what I expected for Italian dining in the North End. There were a few other dishes on the menu that caught my eye and I'd like to try next time I am at Libertine, such as the grilled octopus, chouriço bombeiro, meatballs, and gnocchi sorrentina. read more

Boston has some popular places and sadly we couldn't get a reservation at Carmelina's so we diverted to this restaurant. The seafood was all cooked well, octopus dish, scallops, lobster. The octopus appetizer was cooked to perfection with an interesting flavor profile with some hints of sweetness but felt the seasoning on all the dishes wasn't evenly distributed. The veal piccata was overly lemony for my taste but veal was tender. Some of the pasta was just a little undercooked of al dente. The lobster carbonara was probably the best prepared and flavored dish. Second up was the truffle tagliatelle had a great sauce for the pasta. The fried oyster appetizer tasted a little too much like the ocean, meaning it didn't seem too fresh. The scallop risotto dish was really good. Overall, a decent meal for little Italy. Was in Boston wife's first time so we had to hit the north end for Italian. We were there for lunch so not a lot of places are opened for lunch so we stopped in. The inside was with the typical Italian decor but it had air conditioning which was nice walking in the heat. We started with the fired calamari which I am lucky my wife ate since she is not a huge seafood person but it was delicious. I had Mariscada which had a very good taste and the dish was overall was different and delicious. My wife had the ravioli and she said it was very good The owner was great and she kept checking in on us and kept our glasses full. We were on a family trip to Boston with a group of nine, so I researched restaurants carefully before our trip and made reservations in advance. I was especially excited about Libertine because of their gluten-free options. While I was very pleased with the gluten-free food and the restaurant's protocols for guests with Celiac, I ultimately cannot recommend this restaurant because of our experience during the meal. There was a pipe directly above our table that was constantly dripping condensation. Within a few minutes of sitting down, my son--who unfortunately drew the unlucky seat directly underneath it--noticed that he was getting wet. When we looked up, we could clearly see beads of condensation forming on the pipe and dripping down onto him. I brought this to the hostess's attention and asked if we could be moved. We were told this wasn't possible, even though there were several smaller tables available and we would have been willing to split our large party up. I also spoke with the owner, who said someone would come over right away to mop the pipe. Meanwhile, the water continued dripping directly onto my son. His shirt had wet spots, and the condensation was also dripping onto his bread plate and water cup. We moved things around as best we could, but having water from a ceiling pipe drip into your food or beverage is obviously incredibly unpleasant--and frankly, unhygienic. The pipe was mopped at least four separate times during our meal, each time directly over our heads and our food. At that point, it became impossible to simply ignore the situation. We were essentially trying to enjoy our dinner while monitoring where the next drop of water was going to land. One thing that particularly bothered me was the impression that this situation might have been handled differently if an adult--or a couple on a date--had been seated underneath that pipe. Would an adult customer reasonably be expected to sit through an entire dinner while condensation dripped onto them, their clothes, their food, and their drink? I honestly don't think so. Because it was my eleven year old son sitting there, however, I felt that the situation was treated as something we were simply expected to tolerate. Whether that was the intention or not, that was certainly how it felt as a parent watching my child get dripped on throughout our meal. What was most disappointing was that there seemed to be no real attempt to make the situation right or improve our experience. We weren't offered another table, even though we would have been willing to split up, and there was no gesture such as a complimentary dessert or even something for my son, who had spent the meal getting dripped on. I was particularly disappointed because we had gone out of our way to plan this meal and were genuinely looking forward to it. The gluten-free food and Celiac safety were excellent, but unfortunately, that wasn't enough to overcome the experience of having a child repeatedly dripped on by a condensation-covered pipe throughout our dinner. I would not return, and I cannot recommend this restaurant based on our experience. It was uncomfortable, unhygienic, and, most of all, disappointing in the way the situation was handled. Customers should be able to expect to sit through a meal without having water drip onto them, their food, or their drinks. read more

Setting was very nice and staff was nice too. The bread was a kind of sandwich bread, more of the kind you would find in a casual diner not in an Italian restaurant in the North End. The chicken parm sandwich was a good portion and checked all the boxes. The chicken was a bit tough and chewy though and the sandwich bread did not hold very well. Went here with my friend recently who is celiac and we had a great experience! We had a reservation and were seated immediately (a rare experience in north end!). She got a mocktail and loved it, I got a spritz which was also delicious. We got the mozzarella curds as our appetizer which were great, the aioli was great with them. My friend was super happy as she hasn't had fried food in years being celiac. For our entrees, she got the chicken parm and loved it (it was huge). I got the funghi tagliette and it was so good! I loved the truffle cream sauce- I could have drank it. We definitely overate and were in a food coma afterwards which is a testament to how good it was, and my friend didn't get glutened which was a big win. All of our food came out in good time too, which is another rarity for north end. There also wasn't any overwhelming music playing so we were able to hear each other perfectly fine. The Alfredo is actually good unlike some American restaraunts when I could have gluten (the Alfredo is massive chunks and just doesn't taste great there). And you can tell it's legitimate Italian because the cooks speak Italian. They even have gluten free bread for the table. Amazing place. I wish we had one like this in Raleigh. My friends and I had a terrible experience at Libertine. I picked it because it advertises itself as a gluten and allergen friendly Italian spot in the north end, and I am gluten free and dairy free. The waiter asked if anyone had any dietary restrictions when we sat down, and when I said I was gluten free, he said I couldn't have pasta or bread, only fish and meat. We were all confused whether he was joking or note as there are signs everywhere in the menu and on the table about the restaurant being accommodating to celiac. Whether he was joking or not, it made me uncomfortable and felt disrespectful to joke about as allergies and restrictions can be stressful to deal with at restaurants. I heard the table next to me order gluten free pasta, so I assumed he was trying to be funny, which I did not appreciate. My boyfriend asked if there was gluten free bread, and he told them they didn't have any. When we went to order and he heard I was also dairy free, he told me he wouldn't serve me any pasta because he had a customer order pasta who was dairy free and had to go to the hospital. I have been to dozens of Italian restaurants in Boston, and I have never been told I can't have gluten free pasta because I am dairy free as there is no dairy in pasta. This led to there being basically nothing that I could order from the menu. On top of all of this, he served the wrong dishes to the wrong people at the table, forgot to bring wine glasses for the bottle we ordered until 3/4 of the way through the meal, and my friends all thought their food was pretty average or below (none of them have dietary restrictions). Overall, this was the least accommodating restaurant for dietary restrictions I have been to in Boston despite their advertising for being "dedicated to allergen awareness." The waiter handled dietary restrictions immaturely, and the food for people without restrictions is average at best. read more
