I had bought these cookies at Whole Foods freezer aisle in the past but this is first time I've had their stuff fresh. The cookies are too sweet overall for me and have too many chocolate chips for my taste. The banana bread however was amazing. It's pretty dense so I had plenty left over for the next day. We wanted to get a latte to go with but with but unfortunately their machine was broken. The shop is small so it's just a place to take things to go really. It's in a prime location near lots of restaurants to get people after dinner. The parking in the area is really difficult so you may have to walk a bit. read more

After many years of being a dedicated Levain fan, I am THRILLED Chicago gets its very own shop! Ever since I first tried Levain (at the original NYC location), I've brought cookies home with me to share with family and stick in the freezer. While their frozen grocery store cookies that hit stores years later were tasty, they never tasted quite the same as the OG. I can now confirm that Chicago's West Loop location has that perfect chewy Levain taste. The chocolate chip walnut is my absolute favorite. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the oatmeal raisin (I dislike raisins!). The seasonal dark chocolate peppermint was also quite tasty--if only that would stay on the menu year round. Peanut butter chocolate? Can't go wrong. I have actually never tried any of the other baked goods offered at Levain, and I hope to the next time I visit! The oat milk latte was perfection. And the branding is also *so* on point. I wish Levain great success in this Chicago location and also look forward to its expansion to LA sand beyond! read more

Great cookies but in a super busy area at night. Like six way stops, cars double parked everywhere, music and everything but it's kinda controlled chaos and everyone seems pretty respectful of people walking and driving. My daughter loved these, they were a little too sweet but tasted the same as when we had them in NYC. Good news is they hold beautifully so they make a nice late night and early morning snack especially if you're staying in a hotel. I preferred the chocolate chip cookies from L.A. A must-go if you like soft, almost raw chocolate chip cookies. The inside of the cookie is really soft, but the outside is still crisp. There are few things I love in this world more than a fresh out of the oven chocolate chip cookie, so I was thrilled when I heard Levain was coming to my neighborhood. I visited on a Thursday in the late morning, so the line was pretty short and moved very quickly. The employees were all friendly and they definitely work efficiently. The space itself is also beautiful, although it's tiny, so there is no place to sit inside. I tried the two chip chocolate chip cookie and it just didn't do it for me. It wasn't bad, but it felt more like a scone than a chocolate chip cookie. The cookies are huge (as they should be at around $5 each), but mine was dry, crumbly, and missing the gooey center and brown sugary sweetness that I love in a chocolate chip cookie. I'm not sure if I just got one from an off batch, if the cookies were just overhyped, or if the recipe here just doesn't work for me, but I don't think I'll end up joining the Levain fan club. read more

I kept hearing about Levain Bakery on social media and decided to check it out on my day off. I went on a Friday morning and there was no line. There's no tables and chairs inside so it's meant to be a grab and go kind of place. I got the dark chocolate chocolate chip cookie and dark chocolate peppermint cookie. I was tempted to get more but refrained since I wanted to try them first before splurging ($5 per cookie). The cookies are rich, decadent, and dense. I didn't have breakfast that morning but I couldn't eat more than half a cookie since it was so heavy. The next day they were a bit hard but softened up after they were microwaved. Overall, the baked goods are worth trying but I probably would only come once in awhile since they're definitely not cheap. read more

SO excited Levain Chicago opened while we were visiting, and SO happy we went! I've had Levain, shipped from NYC to LA and it was amazing! It's even more amazing, fresh, warm, ooey gooey, yummy. On a Sunday night, 7pm, no line, quick in and out. Parking in West Loop is impossible, we found a paid spot 3 blocks away ($9.50/2 hr). Worth it tho. The original is still my fave, but the dark chocolate chip, dark chocolate with peanut butter chip, and chocolate chip no walnuts are still very good. There is a lot of hype around this bakery, and I was skeptical at first, but their cookie has won me over! Levain has very unique cookies. They are chunky, crispy on the outside, and when still warm from the oven, soft and gooey on the inside. The center of the cookie is like melted cookie dough and melted chocolate chips, or whatever type chips is in your cookie. I highly recommend trying their classic cookie, the chocolate chip walnut. It truly is the perfect cookie. Mine was warm when I got it, and that first bite was heaven! Then I had to walk through the winter chill for 10 minutes, so it wasn't very warm anymore, so I microwaved it for 15 or 20 seconds. Paired with a glass of oat milk, this is the perfect sweet treat! I also tried the chocolate peanut butter chip cookie. It quite literally is a chocolate cookie with peanut butter chips! The cookie itself tasted and had the texture of a moist brownie with peanut butter. It was pretty good! Lastly I had the seasonal cookie which was the dark chocolate peppermint. It was good and hit the peppermint craving for the holidays but it was a little too sweet for my taste. Overall, if you're looking for a sweet snack, one cookie is more than enough because it's massive! If you buy more than one, just know you probably will save the rest for later. I will definitely be back for the chocolate chip walnut cookie. I understand why it's so popular. Also, this place is small and tends to have a line but the cookies are always ready and fresh, so the line keeps moving quick! The staff are friendly too. read more

My favorite cookie is now in Chicago!! I tried Levain for the first time when I was in New York and I fell in love. Imagine my surprise when I learned they opened their first Midwest location down the street from where I live! So of course I grabbed a few cookies and brought them home for my family to try. My dad is an unofficial chocolate chip cookie expert and is a pretty hard critic. So when he told me these were the best cookies he has had, I knew my memory served me right. I got the chocolate chip walnut, two chip chocolate chip, and dark chocolate peanut butter chip. The dark chocolate peanut butter chip was the classic thick and chunky cookie that I remembered so fondly. The other two were more spread out than I remembered but still very chunky. All of the cookies were absolutely spectacular. Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. I still think the original is the best flavor. Not too sweet and has a nice crunch from the walnuts. But really all of the flavors I tried were so so good. Now the price is fairly high, being $5 a cookie. Though, the cookie is very big and is the best cookie you will find. So putting it in perspective, it's worth it. It is going to take all of my will power to not buy these cookies regularly! Levain Bakery has finally made its way to Chicago all the way from New York! Upon walking in, you're met with the delicious sent of fresh baked cookies. They have a small selection of classic cookies they offer regularly. I always go for their Walnut Chocolate Chip Cookies ($5) and my sister loves their regular Chocolate Chip Cookies ($5). I'll say it, I'm not the greatest fan of their cookies. Their cookie are very bread-y on the tougher side and jam packed with chocolate chips whereas I like my cookies more soft and pillowy balanced with the perfect amount of chips. Even though our cookies were on the fresh baked side, it was still quite hard. The original New York locations are unbeatable and way more moist and soft compared to the Chicago location. Price wise, I don't necessarily think it's fair when keeping the quality and portion in mind. These cookies are more on the average size instead of a larger cookie. These are some giant cookies! They are also on the sweeter side so I feel like two people could definitely split and be satisfied with 1 cookie. My favorite flavor that I've tried from here so far has been a seasonal cookie, the Peppermint Bark Chocolate cookie that they had over the holidays. If you like your cookies a little more gooey in texture, you can eat them fresh from the store or after heating them up a little in the microwave. If you prefer more of a crunch/chewy texture to your cookies, you can let them cool off/harden for a few hours prior to eating. read more

I went here Sunday, exactly 1 day after opening day. It is so well put together, there was a small line but staff made sure it was going through fast. We waited maybe 10 minutes, and we brought our own warm milk in our thermos. Downside: There is no seating area to eat your cookies! This is definitely a to-go order place. But I am happy to report that the cookies tasted exactly the NYC location, yay! The west loop neighborhood just got yummier! I think this is the perfect treat after a few tacos from velvet taco that is 2 doors down. Highly recommend.
