Don't mess around; ask somebody who works here for help. So much stuff is tucked away in nooks & crannies, it doesn't behoove you to dig around in it. On the plus side, so much stuff is tucked away in nooks & crannies, know what I mean? I don't do much in the way of needing hardware, but when I do I come here. Of course, a lot of the time those projects are over long weekends, & when I get to Leopoldi's I find it is closed because THEY are having their Memorial Day or Martin Luther King Day or President's Day or whatever. Which I don't begrudge them, but it has put me in a pickle more than once. read more

Great hardware store! I've lived in this neighborhood for 15 years and worked on my home throughout that time. Leopoldi's always has what I need (parts other places don't). And the guys there are very knowledgeable. It can be very hard to find things there, so I recommend asking right away for what you're looking for. And ask for advice with what you're doing as well - you'll be glad you did. It can get busy at times, so bring some patience. But in the end it will be a big time saver to get the right thing for what you're doing. read more

Went in to this tiny cluttered store to buy some minor hardware Monday afternoon, since I like to support local businesses, the larger hardware stores are not easy to walk to, and maybe most importantly, I wanted to find a new store to patronize after subjecting myself to the utter and repeated incompetence and routine unprofessional of a certain completing 7th avenue hardware store. Unfortunately, at Leopoldi's I encountered the classic mark of poorly run operations: one customer is allowed to tie up 2-3 employees while other customers wait. However, this practice is pretty typical for Brooklyn businesses and I have learned to endure it. What really turned me off is that rather than help me as I clearly waited at the main counter, the employees went about activities they found more important --stocking?-- and worse, they even preferred bickered among themselves over some or other issue to helping me. I ended up just walking out, but from the lack of interest they showed after 4 minutes or so, I don't get the feeling they were worried about losing my business. I should mention I was one of only two customers in there. Seems like a family--I counted five different people who seemed to be employees, but not one of them had the time to help me--one guy told me what I needed was behind the counter. Old school mom and pop stores can be delightful to shop at for yuppies trying to sooth their guilt by seeking out big hearted "real" locals, but too often these families have no idea how to sustain even the most basic operations. This kind of experience makes it hard to avoid the big box stores where at least you know the kinds of indignities to expect. read more

I haven't been there, or even bought anything there...BUT THESE GUYS ARE THE SH!T!!! I called there looking for some carriage bolts (which, for some reason nobody seemed to have) and the guy on the phone told me to call another hardware store in the neighborhood. Even gave me the number! When I called the other place they not only had what I needed, but cheaper than anywhere else...Most people would have just said, "sorry, buddy - we don't have any." That's what I call customer service, and the next time I need something from a hardware store I'm going to LEOPOLDI'S first!!! Thanx, fellas. read more

This is the best hardware store in Brooklyn!! When I started going there I didnt know an electric drill from a hole in the wall. Because they are experienced and will give a girl advice you get professional looking results. They are simply great! I've tried Lowes & Home Depot, but I always come back to Leopoldi's. After being disappointed by one of their competitors I went to Leopolds and had a great experience. The staff is helpful and quickly assisted me in putting together everything I needed for my home improvement project. Although they didn't have the knobs I wanted I was able to order those online for a faction of the price I would have paid at retail. Amidst the 2013 heat wave and being the last one's to buy an AC this holiday weekend...we wandered in here after visiting a few neighboring business's searching for a small AC. We were in and out of here in less than 10 minutes with what we needed. Even though we bought 'the last' of that price range said the assistant to the boss after he brought it down from the attic, there was no attempt at upselling. When I asked about delivery, they were as casual as could be even though we lived a couple of miles away, and I felt like I was asking my uncle to do me a favor. When I inquired about a delivery fee...the question was dismissed. We liked these guys enough with their straightforward manner to agree and actually just pay whatever the fee was, ....there was none. This a true neighborhood business and I'm so glad we waited for the right place to make our purchase. It was fast, easy, direct, comfy- no pressure and the assistant delivered our AC right after the store closed, we had to chase him down to give him a tip. read more

Now I know that there is home depot and Lowes but there are very few places left like this left in Brooklyn. There's one obvious reason that these classic, old-fashioned hardware stores are the first place to stop. The guys who work in Leopoldi's really know their stuff. I'm always stopping in with a question about how to do some small job at home, and these guys fit me out with the right tools and parts. But shockingly, their tiny store is better stocked than our local Home Depot and Lowes -- hard to believe, but true, because every time I've gone to Lowe's or Home Depot, they seem to be out of exactly the part or tool I need. Really horrible stocking. And trying finding someone to answer a simple question at the big stores. The last time I shopped at Lowes, I tried to return an air conditioner that had turned out to be smashed inside the box, and I was treated like a criminal. The store manager gilled me like I was trying to rip him off. I hope the shops like Leopoldi's are around for a long, long time. read more

I've lived in this neighborhood since 2005 and I should have done this years ago. Sorry it took me so long Leopoldi. Once or twice a year, my handiness fails me and I feel like a helpless girl about to throw a tantrum. But then I know I can just stroll on over to Leopoldi Hardware and ask them for help. The guys here know their stuff and are truly the best (I'm sure the gal/s are too but I've never dealt with them). Anyone on Yelp who's given them a nasty review about their service has to either be sour competition or a bonafide a-hole because they don't come nicer than the guys here. They go above and beyond to help their customers. I don't know how many times I've been unable to muster up the strength to unscrew or uncap or undo something I shouldn't have done and I take it there looking to replace it and not only do they have what I need, but they pull out their own tools and fix the problem. This is good old small town service that's hard to come by nowadays. If some of the newer businesses around the area need a lesson in how to run a business (you know who you are), I suggest they stop in here. Plus, the relatively small store has everything! I mean everything. Hanging from the ceiling, hanging up the walls, hanging in secret walls behind the walls. If they don't have it, it was probably never made. I've gone in there with ancient parts from my crappy old walk-up apt and they've always had something that works for me. Surprisingly organized with prices that are totally reasonable. First time here and was in for some soil, the two young men in the front were very friendly. Directed me to my item right away. Price is also very reasonable. By the time I was ready to pay (the initial two young gentlemen had gone off, possibly helping other customers?), so was met by I think the mgr. Two problems: 1) they don't have a counter for the cash register. The register was right on the shelf along with their items for sale. So if there was no one there, then you would be circling the store for where to pay. 2) The man who took my payment was quite rude. As I was getting my monies to pay him, he just bagged my item and tossed it down on the floor. Really?!?! Why wouldn't he wait for the few seconds for me to hand him the monies and hand me the bag over. My first response when I realized he put my item down on the floor for me to pick up on my own, I said "o...k...". When he finished putting the monies in his register, he says "ok". No thank you, nothing. This was the rudest person I have ever encountered ever! I don't understand where all the positive ratings are coming from...but the competitive prices aren't worth being treated with disrespect. I rather pay more to go else where. read more
