The ambience is nice because the mid-century decor is great. We had four dishes; two were terrible, one was fine, and the fourth was good. I would actually give them 3 1/2 stars. This is your typical NJ diner located less than 1 mile from exit 15X on the NJ Turnpike. Came here today after the Giants training session with my brother. I had the Turkey club sandwich on whole wheat. My brother had the Monte Cristo on Rye. The food is good, you get large portions and the prices are reasonable. It is a filled with all old time photos of stars from the past. If you are in the area and hungry it is a good place to go, it is open 24 hours and easy to get to. First off, these waitresses are great. They are quick for the lunch crew, so if you're looking for more coddling, you just have to ask for another minute, and they'll give it to you. However, I ALWAYS know what I want, so I really appreciate the speed and accuracy. If you order anything but a burger at this place, you are nutty, cuz this is the best burger, I may have ever ordered, okay, thats a hyperbole, but its definitely the best DINER burger I have ever ordered. They are not frozen, but pressed fresh daily. The cheese is on both sides of the bun. They are cooked perfectly. The fries are great. You really can't do better than this burger. And! For 6.50 for the deluxe I believe it is DAMN cheap. I know I'm from Manhattan, but these are still really good prices. I'm not sure why people would even think about complaining about that. So, Legends Diner, I'm sad to go, really, because I will miss your convenient and delicious lunches, but I hope my review lives on and brings more people stuck working in Secaucus to lunch at your fine establishment. Our hotel was just a few blocks down the road and we saw this diner on our way to the New Jersey transit to go to Manhattan. After we got out of a Broadway show, we decided that it was too late to find anything that wasn't bar food or fast food, so we decided to go back to the New Jersey area and eat at the diner. Well we would have been better off at eating at McDonald's. I am sorry. I know that it is not nice to criticize someone else's livelihood... but are we joking? It was relatively dead when we came in and we were shown to a booth. The menu was extensive but by no means a cheap find. Our server asked if we were ready as soon as she came over with our drinks... literally 2 minutes... WTF? No we're not ready! She sighs heavily and walks off. I was confused... there were 2 people at the bar and one in a booth across the way... What was her rush? I decided that I would go with the penne pasta and meatballs whereas my friend went with a breakfast platter. The server said that I could go help myself to the salad bar. Two pieces of dead lettuce in a bar, cucumbers that have turned into pickles sans the brine, and 4 dressings of ranch does not a salad bar make!~ I don't know why I bothered... the only semi edible salad was the pasta salad. Our food came out relatively quickly. I should have sent it back. Though the portion was HUGE... it was basically penne pasta with ketchup and two golf ball sized meatballs that tasted like they had turned. I was too hungry... but not enough to eat even a 1/8th of what they brought me. My friend didn't fare well either. How you can ruin eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, and pancakes is beyond me. Now my friend is more tolerant when it comes to just eating anything. But even she did not finish her food. The pancakes tasted like they were mixed in with something foul... They smelled awful and tasted like slop. Our bill came out to... $30 some dollars... ARE YOU KIDDING? F That. I had better food at McDonald's. I will not come back here again. I will just spend the $5 at the Hotel to buy some chips and a drink. I'm surprised I didn't go home with food poisoning. read more

This seems to be one of the Secaucus locals' go to joint. It's packed and for the most part it's 24 hours in an area that doesn't have much to start with. Had a decent omelete and solid service. The contractor we had used to work in the area and seemed to know a good amount of the staff here so that helped. Otherwise it's solid food but not anything mind blowing 3.5 stars. read more

They do offer some interesting things, but nothing ever really pops out to you. I guess it's your typical NJ diner...pretty GOOD at everything, but not GREAT at anything. That being said, I usually order from the "specials" menu because that includes soup or salad and dessert. The specials that are always good are the fish and chips (fish is always fresh), they have this triple francaise combo (I forget the exact name, but it has chicken, shrimp, and scallops) over rice...that is actually pretty amazing for diner fare. And I always stand by the lasagna...always sturdy, but never dry/burnt...and never runny either. Almost forgot the "Happy Waitress" its a 2 sided grilled cheese w/tomato and bacon served w/fries. Soups ...I always enjoy the Manhattan clam chowder or chicken noodle. Salad..they have a pretty extensive Salad Bar (stuffed grape leaves are always available, as well as some other out of the ordinary items) Dessert...the rice pudding is always good...as well as the carrot cake. Aside from the foods...the service is always excellent!!! And if you're lucky enough to be served by Joyce or Carmen(they are the best of the best), you will definitely say they are the best waitresses you've ever had!!! read more

I had the large Legends breakfast with French toast, three meats, egg, potatoes, and coffee for $13. You just cannot beat that. The French toasts was just standard, but the sausage and potatoes were outstanding. Although you'd think a place like this would have a huge menu, they just gave me a one page 8x11 piece of paper. I'm sure they would have had almost anything I wanted, but it was just not individually listed. Oh and for us down south they even had grits. We stumbled in here trying to find something that wasn't a chain and wasn't in the pricey NYC before we ventured into the city. My husband found this diamond in the rough tucked into Secaucus where we were staying. It's a cute little silver, shiny diner off the beaten path. Everything inside was mirrored and silver replicating last diners. I have always loved diners and their ambiance. This was a true gem. Very clean and spacious seating. Our first waitress during our two visits we will never forget. Her name was Doris and she was the most kind and helpful woman. She complimented my boys on more than one occasion regarding how quite and good they were. She let us in on a few local places, one being Bagel Buffet which is in another review of mine which is also a diamond in the rough. She was so attentive as well. Our food came out and our mouths dropped at the sheer amount of food we were given for what we paid. And the taste even topped that! I got the Secaucus breakfast which included French toast, 2 eggs, and ham, sausage and bacon. This was way too much food for me! I had to give the meats away because I dived into my eggs and French toast. The French toast came on thick brioche type bread and was subtlety sweet which was amazingly perfect given most French toast in chain restaurants are overwhelmingly sweet. The eggs were delicious and fluffy and the bacon cooked perfectly crisp. My kids got the Belgian waffle and pancakes and I've never seen anything more delicious. They devoured them. My husband got the western omelet, bagel and potatoes. These potatoes were to die for! Tasted just like my moms fried potatoes! Needless to say we visited again the next day. And while Doris wasn't there this time, the food was just as amazing! I ordered the banana walnut pancakes this time with eggs and they were delicious! I like that Legends has kept the traditional diner approach when many other diners in the area have renovated their interiors and beefed up their menus to the thickness of the dictionary. I appreciate the decaying interior and the traditional waitstaff as they add to the quintessential diner experience. For a New Yorker to get here, you'd need to get on the train from 2 Penn and stop at Secaucus, take the taxi (5 or 6 bucks) which is about half a mile away. It's pretty clean, parking isn't bad. I always overlook this place in the past because the location wasn't appealing, but since I was stuck at the station and was hungry I asked the taxi driver to take me to the nearest restaurant. Serving was large, had the shrimp parm and it was pretty good! I'll need to visit it again to get a better feel of the place. It's 3 blocks from one of my hidden faves "Linda's Thai".
