I love the Colonial Diner for the history, architecture and overall environment as well as the food. I have eaten here twice since visiting my father for the holidays and they always provide great service as most servers have worked here for decades. I had the Deluxe Breakfast last weekend and today I had the Pasta Soup, California Hamburger with fried, Cole Slaw and a pickle with Orange Juice and a Corn Muffin to go. The bill was $25.00 and I left a cash tip of $5 for good service. There menu is quite extensive for breakfast, lunch or dinner with daily specials as the location id just off Route 3 where Lyndhurst meets Rutherford on Orient Way. Gus's Colonial Diner is a 1950s train car-style diner with its sparkling, silver and crimson roof that has been renovated to maintain its retro vibe feel. My partner and I came tonight for dinner from our last visit 2 years ago. Upon entering the bright interior, highlighted by a long, spacious counter and round swivel stools, along with stainless steel wall panels and decorative tile, we were greeted by the host, Jim, who owns and operates the place along with his mother, Georgia, and got a table immediately in the corner with views of both dining areas. Their menu is extensive, much as one would expect from a solid Jersey diner featuring salads, sandwiches, triple-decker club sandwiches, specialty burgers, roasts, steaks, and seafood. For starters, I decided on a small cup of Chicken Noodle Soup. As our main meal, we opted for the Eggs Benedict with Avocado and Turkey Bacon as well as the Chicken Gyro Sandwich accompanied with Fries. The hostess greeted me immediately with a warm "Welcome in!" and our server checked on us often without being pushy. The place is spotless, bright, and has that updated vintage-diner charm that feels both classic and modern. We visited during the lunch rush, but our food arrived in about 10 minutes. I ordered the chicken souvlaki platter, which was flavorful and came in a huge portion definitely enough for leftovers. My friend loved the fluffy pancakes with fresh berries. Run of the mill diner, nothing really bad about it but nothing special. The friend I went with got corned beef hash and it was the corned beef hash that comes in a can which I am not a fan of so I'm glad I didn't order it. Eggs Benedict was mediocre, mound of Homefries under it made the eggs Benedict slide all over the place when I tried to cut it. Great classic diner atmosphere and service was great and very accommodating to my friends substitutions or additions but just wouldn't really recommend the place based off of what I had and the amount of other diners in the local area to try. read more

Old school diner with great food! Had the corned beef hash with over easy eggs. I asked they cook my home fries done super crispy, and the waiter offered to deep fry them. Yes!!! That's the extra you want. The multigrain bread for my toast was delicious. The eggs and hash were wonderful - but honestly it was the home fries and toast that put it over the top. Small town charm in a bustling establishment. That's how I would sum this up. We usually drive by and it's always very packed but this time there was a spot right out front. There is a limited parking lot and even more limited street parking on the side street. It's small inside but comfortable if that makes sense. Tables are set up in a matter that you are very comfortable. It was busy so slightly chaotic. To the point that our waitress seemed a little overwhelmed and didn't have time to even check on us. I got the Tex-Mex omelet which had jalapeños, onions, cheddar and topped with salsa. I also got a side of corned beef hash. The omelet was very good. You got your money's worth on this meal. My only complaint was a little too much of the salsa, especially being that you can tell it came straight from a plastic container. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that for your basic Diner fare, but there was just a little too much. Same went for the corned beef hash. Arrived on a late Sunday afternoon and was craving some breakfast. We were greeted as soon as we sat down and were promptly served. When in the area I love the customer service and a simple burger here is great.. BUT TODAY..... on a crisp fall am I decided to come to Colonial for breakfast on my way into the studio. MISTAKE!!! Lovely waitress I normally get greeted me, preface how she's great as is other staff. I ordered egg whites and rib eye.. what was I thinking - she comes over after I flagged her down, once I began cutting it I knew it was not a good piece of meat. I asked her can you make sure this is the rib eye, feels like a tougher part of the cow but the chef comes over asking how the specialty cooked dressing i said that was okay. Confused I should've told him this steak is trash. Some diners buy their meat from butchers THEY CLEARLY DIDN'T on this one. If you look at the piece off the side I couldn't believe what I just ATE. We went for an early breakfast this morning to try to beat the crowd. It's not big but they move people in and out at a good clip. I had the breakfast burger rare which comes with bacon, fried egg, and cheese. It was incredibly good. Tender and delicious and the egg ran out perfectly on the soft bun. My favorite diner! I love everyone here and I love everything I eat. I always judge a diner by their eggs and home fries and this has been the best so far. They always make my eggs perfectly and my home fries are always crispy and just perfect!! Their specials are something actually special and yummy. Despite already eating my egg meal, I had to order the short rib because it just looked so good (and I was right). Also for any gluten free (sensitive) and allergy ridden people (like me) they have gluten free wraps and they're super accommodating to my food allergies! The waiters/waitresses are super sweet too. Came here for the first time on sunday with my siblings. I have to admit, I'm a sucker for retro diners that look straight out of the 1950s. I would always pass this place but finally had a chance to eat there. We walked in and immediately noticed how clean it was! We were greeted instantly with a smile and asked to sit anywhere we want. The other great thing about this place is every booth is a window seat. Regardless where you sit your getting a view and plenty of light. Our waitress Mary was a complete doll. Super courteous, polite, and very attentive. The coffee was constantly flowing! And you all know diner coffee is delicious and always fresh. She asked us how we were doing multiple times, and was overall such a sweetheart. My brother ordered the mushroom omelette, I got 2 eggs sunnyside up with the hashbrowns and multigrain toast. We got the banana nutella french toast for the table, I asked for strawberries to be added, and thankfully said sure! Everything was fresh and delish! Honestly, colonial diner food was great. Standard diner options. Great old school diner vibes. I got the chicken Caesar wrap deluxe with fries - yum. My vegetarian mom got a weird attempt at an avocado toast - I mean they tried! It's a diner, what can we expect. Yesterday, our meal almost took an hour to come out. And when it did, 1/3 of the table got their food and then it was another 12 minutes for the next third and another 12 minutes for the next. My uncle had to eat his meal alone because the rest of the animals at the table couldn't wait. So it's safe to say that logistically they have some work to do. Overall, solid diner spot. read more
